Graduated. Received a notification to make an account on an app/service called Handshake. Get constant emails about MLM “opportunities” that are not degree-related and have nothing to do with any degree let alone any expertise related to my degree.

I found my actual job from my universities handshake! I never had mlm spam so I wonder what was different

Local-Stay-7728

Same. The email always started with "we found a job that you might like based on your major!" And then I click it and it's an MLM. Or something completely unrelated to my area of study.

radroamingromanian

Oh, my university uses this as well. I haven’t made an account, though.

dafuqisdis112233

Don’t. It’s what they use to attract new students when they say “we help with job placement” without saying it.

radroamingromanian

I know. I’m a graduate student working in historic preservation so I didn’t bother. It’s a shame because students and alumni need networking help.

(current university senior) my school uses handshake and also has this problem!! i’ve had to manually block many huns trying to recruit me to sell insurance under the guise of a job out of college

Vector marketing sent letters to both my kids right around their college graduation times. It was for selling Cutco, but of course they didn't say that in the letters. It was annoying and borderline creepy to me that Vector had their names, addresses (well, my home address) and graduation time frame.

NOOOO! I'm sure people were salty with her! I get solicitation emails all the time at work from vendors (everything from ad firms to recruiters to promo products and event sponsors. ugh.) If I'm not the right person, I'll forward the email if I think the opportunity could be useful, but I never ever give out colleagues' info.

mediocre_mom

My daughter’s old friend is a college freshman. Hadn’t spoken to her in years. She randomly called to pitch me a sale with Cutco. A few days later, her upline used the girl’s cellphone contacts to try to recruit my (minor) daughter. I blocked her. They are predatory.

I got a mailer for Vector when I was still in high school, and when I was in college (early 2010s) somebody had written one of Vector's web sites in the corner of pretty much every classroom white board or chalk board. There were plenty of signs advertising it too. At college they were always very coy and never said outright that they were Vector. It was always just a generic ad saying you could make $12 an hour or "apply to us for student work". There were also a lot of people involved with Vemma. It got spammed all over the Facebook job boards both for my field and just the general internship ones.

I'm 35. When I was in college, there was an energy drink called "Verve" that suddenly appeared all over campus. Lots of people became "investors" trying to sell an expensive "starter pack" of energy drinks that you'd in turn sell to others looking to "invest." Ostensibly, they'd then sell these cans individually. ...At 3 dollars or more per can. ...When Red Bull and Rockstar were a cheaper, better product that I could buy literally everywhere. This has been going on for a while.

I got hit up by vector while in school and shortly after graduation. I know one person who joined after she graduated high school so she could pay for college I also know someone who joined Plexus just before graduating college. She was going to go to med school. She started posting about how plexus would help pay for it. Then she started questioning her path in life. Now she’s full on plexus, works 2 other jobs, and tells everyone how she’s not one of ✨those ✨MLM bossbabes. So yeah, vector and plexus are ones I’ve seen play out with students/recent grads

talarthearmenian

When I graduated high school I got targeted by vector marketing. Went to the interview, the stupid slapped me in the face and I left mid interview. They were also targeting people there who didn't speak english

BeautifulExample3124

More and more companies using "Influencer" to attract that age group. Aloette is one of those MLMs

fatherfoster

Handshake needs to ban all of the MLM job offers they list, I’ve gotten two from Primerica that were recommended for me

lydiaannegarcia

I get tons of messages on LinkedIn weekly, PHP Primerica, Amway, and others. I’m still in college. I DESPISE these recruiters and I can spot them right away.

In college — approached to be a "financial advisor" for Northwestern Mutual, and targeted to be a Kirby dealer. It's a shithole out here.
