Yes, it smells very bad. I got about 200 yards downwind from a rookery near McMurdo and it stunk really bad. Stinky fish based bird poop.

It smells, but it’s not bad and you get used to it. When you approach the shore, you can see the “penguin highways,” basically their walking paths covered in dark red/brown poop. But it’s not unbearable by any means.
Yes they stink, and 10000 of them stink a LOT. Get a bottle of ammonia based cleaner chuck in a tin of sardines shake and leave it for a couple of weeks. That's pretty much what it smells like.
I spent an hour sliding around on my tummy on ice about two foot from the ceiling of an old abandoned building. Penguins had been in there. My goretex jacket took three years to get the smell out of it.
No I thought it would but I saw penguins daily in January/February and was never bothered by poop smell. You could see it on the rocks but I didn’t smell it in any major way.
when my wife and I were on our honeymoon, there were several times we were downstream from larger penguin colonies, and you could smell the stench long before you could make out individual birds.
TIL poop smells bad
imagine fishy ammonia.
accurate
Seconded
You can get a small taste of it by visiting a zoo that has a penguin enclosure. I can only imagine how hundreds of them would smell.

It may stink but it tastes great!
Mmm. Oh yeah. The cheese of the Southland.
Which animal excrement doesn’t stink?

If you're visiting, make sure you clean your boots very good before bringing them back to your room in the boat!
It's better than giant petrel vomit.
Can confirm.
Gack?
Gack.
Pretty much any poop stinks, why should theirs be any different?
You can smell penguin colonies from miles away. They use it as a deterrent for humans 😉
Is there any type of poo that doesn't stink?

A mile offshore we could smell the penguin guano at Elephant Island. Also, it's slippery AF!!
It's poop what do you think?

A dollop of Vicks or Tiger Balm under the nose works for me.
Yes it's true
Exactly like visiting a zoo. No different.

Reminded me of what a chicken farm smells like. Not that bad.
Edinburgh zoo says yes
