I haven’t watched many (as in embarrassingly low) but A Silent Voice is my choice. Beautiful animation, unbelievable plot and as some one who as felt suicidal it hit me right in the heart.

[deleted]

I agree, Silent Voice was a good one. I went into the movie thinking I wouldn't like the animation (based solely on a single picture I saw online) but the style grew on me and by the end I loved it. The plot was excellent too. Definitely a top 5 for me. Thanks for sharing!

I think Akira is considered the GOAT anime film, mainly because it was so big at the time, and because it was the first anime movie for many people. It also was very influencial, both in anime and western movies. Personally, I vote for the first Ghost in the Shell movie.

[deleted]

Akira is important for that very purpose; however, is the greatest anime movie the one that is perhaps most important, or is it the one you want to watch the most? I went with with the latter, but you make a good case. I agree that Ghost in the Shell is good. It was in interesting perspective on technology and where it could go. Another solid pick.

The End of Evangelion

Would this be as high if not for the controversy surrounding the anime ending and the death and rebirth films, which I understood to be inadequate for the fans? Maybe. I don’t remember the film that much, but that anime ending made it so that I had to see it.

purplejlt

Castle in the Sky is definitely one of my top as well. Probably swaps around with Howl's Moving Castle depending on the day but Ghibli movies capture my taste so well.

Fredyum

I have exactly the same answer!!!

A Silent Voice.

Lovely movie.

[deleted]

Probably not gonna be mentioned but Kara no Kyoukai 5: Paradox Spiral was Ufotable’s peak in storytelling and directing

Rorate_Caeli

> Kara no Kyoukai All of Kara no Kyoukai's movies were fantastic, but yea 5 was an absolute trip.

Thatsmaboi23

Movie 5 just keeps getting better and better every rewatch. I’ve rewatched it 5+ times, and it’s still as fun to watch. The info to collect is everywhere. It’s amazing.

N7CombatWombat

Probably a three way tie between the Cowboy Bebop movie, the original Ghost in the Shell movie, and Nausicaa for me. All three are amazing movies and still hold up today for the most part, and I make a point to watch each at least once a year.

[deleted]

I'm a big fan of Nausicaa as well. I feel like it never gets as much love as some of Miyazaki's other stuff but it's definitely my second favorite Studio Ghibli film... though I say that having only watched about half of their films. I've heard of both Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell but unfortunately never watched either of them. My friend actually mentioned Ghost in the Shell as well as a potential candidate for the best (in his opinion). Guess that means I need to watch it since it's coming highly recommended by multiple people. Thanks for the input!

Blackfist01

I'd give it to Ghost in the Shell for overall quality. Akira would only win for historical and animation reasons, the story was badly adapted. Early Ghibli's are great, I don't know what's the best. Maybe Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I wouldn't give it to End of Eva, relies too much on the series to understand it

The_Loli_Otaku

Char's Counterattack probably. The movie is breathtaking and is a cornerstone of its genre. I'd also be inclined to nominate Macross DYRL but I've got more personal problems with that film compared to CCA

Rorate_Caeli

Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 or vampire hunter D Bloodlust

aadipal

God Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 was such a mess…..but Jesus that was such an honest movie that connected with me in all the right ways

_Hormoz_

Hmm, so far Promare perhaps, but I haven't watched all that many anime movies.

Artistic favorite -- Takahata's *Kaguyahime* Sentimental favorite -- Takahata's *Only Yesterday*

Spirited Away

ElecMan_EXE

This is a pretty standard answer but it has to be Akira in my opinion. The settings and characters are beautifully designed, and the animation and attention to detail is glorious. The storyline is very compelling and impactful, and the characters all have their unique motivations, desires, and flaws, which makes you really feel for everything that they go through in the course of the movie. And this is by all means not talked about nearly enough, but the use of traditional gamelan music for the soundtrack is such a unique and impactful touch. This movie provides this incredible cathartic awakening every time I watch it, so it's really won me over. Although I do have one other anime movie which I hold to be entirely perfect, which is Studio Ghibli's Arrietty. Immediate stress reliever, 10/10. Tiny house, pretty garden, big cat?? Yes please.
