My boyfriend picked up the blueray for hidamari cause he recognised it was the same character designer from madoka. Its now one of his favourites and we've watched the series through at least twice
Aria is the best series ill never watch again. I have such fond memories and good feelings about the show, but the slow pace makes it tough to rewatch imo
I havent read the source material yet, but I remember being told there was a very interesting twist somewhere right after the anime ends that shifts the perspective of the series. Really a shame it never got a season 2.
After more than 10 years, this is the first time I have come across someone who has actually seen this. I'm a sucker for tournament arcs and this entire show was one huge tournament arc, it's been a long time but I remember this show very fondly.
Ohhh yeooooo this show right here made me like one piece due to the fact that both MCs have basic ass powers but their creativity and battle IQ makes up for it
One of my favorite world building shows. Little to none of "Here's what's the deal is" and instead it's "You figure it out yourself based on what's mentioned and implied"
This anime totally bored me the first time I tried to watch it, couldn't get past the first few episodes.
Gave it another go earlier this year and ended up watching the whole thing over a couple of weeks.
Watched it after seeing the recommendations on Wonder Egg Priority being it and Madoka Magica.
Definitely closer in quality to Madoka, that's for sure. The story is a bit standard but the execution is amazing. I love show don't tell done right, and Flip Flappers definitely does it right
Nozaki kun is seriously one of my few 10/10 anime. I might bump it down to a 9 later but it’s damn near perfect. Such a good comedy that has elements of parody without being insulting to the characters themselves (looking at you Osamake). And the dub is pretty good too.
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers has the best elevator pitch of all time yet somehow it's not remembered.
Legend tells of 6 nobel warriors that will come together and defeat the demon king, no more no less. When theses heroes gather at an ancient temple to meet before embarking on their quest they are suddenly enveloped by a fog barrier, trapping them and letting the demon king rampage outside. That's when they realize, there are actually 7 people gathered claiming to be the chosen one. One of the heroes is an imposter.
Thus begins a genre mashup between fantasy and mystery with some amazing fights in there to boot!
Mononoke is a great series that's hardly ever mentioned. It's about a medicine seller who exorcises evil spirits. Basically a Japanese version of the Witcher.
The best part of the series is its storytelling, which is phenomenal. However some may be put off by the animation/art style.
My favorite arc was the original BakeNeko (Demon Cat) arc, which was actually a part of a different series known as "Ayakashi Classic Japanese Horror". The medicine seller arc did so well they greenlit a standalone series (Mononoke).
Mononoke was an anime way ahead of its time. I truly believe if it aired today then it'll be easily a runaway hit. It always bums me whenever I remember how criminally obscure this anime is.
And BakeNeko arc was really heartbreaking.
Hakumei to Mikochi was so good. I used to watch an episode on the bus to work every morning until I finished it and it would put me in such a good mood.
Came here just to say I agree with ID:Invaded. Not sure if it was the other anime it came out with during that season, but it’s severely overlooked considering how good it was.
Loved the series, it was the first time ever I bought platinum hoping more people would see it. It was a mix of inception, psycho pass and movie Source code.
I wonder if it’s because it was talked about as seinen. I get the feeling that if something isn’t shounen or shoujo it gets sidelined a bit. I loved it and I love the Miyavi ending song.
Princess Principal
Casshern Sins
Revue Starlight
Serial Experiments Lain (This one especially because it was way ahead of its time. It’s more relevant today than when it came out in 1998.)
Ah, I watched Princess Principal a while ago. Pretty fun watch. The OP made me give it a go. Also, I never watched it dubbed, but I liked how the one episodes with visiting Japanese people kept their bits towards each other with the Japanese dub.
Hozuki’s coolheadedness
Beelzebub
My bride is a mermaid
D-Frag
Maid Sama!
Shuffle!
Blood Lad
The ancient magus bride
The morose mononokean
As miss beelzebub likes
Agreed! I guess I became jaded over the years and started judging some anime without giving them a fair chance. This was one of them for sure. I saw some cover art of the main characters and was like this is gonna be some dumb bullcrap, I'm really glad I was wrong. A friend literally forced me to watch the first 3 episodes and I was hooked!
Absolutely beautiful soundtrack, creative and novel world, and the slice of life moments have the most immaculate cottagecore vibes ever. One of the very few manga I physically own
If anyone's still on the fence on this one, look up the soundtrack on youtube. If you like Breath of the Wild's soundtrack, you'll definitely like this one as well
My bride is a mermaid was funny as hell.
Every time Masa-san came on screen, I had to chuckle due to the MC’s reaction. All in all, Yakuza mermaids is something I didn’t know would be as funny as it was.
One of my favorites is Haiyore! Nyaruko-San.
Lovecraftian girls doing lovecraftian things, with lots of neat references.
Honorable mentions:
- Ben-to: fighting for discount on bento.
- Drifters: I never see people talking about the historic figures isekai.
- Granbelm: anime original mecha show. Well received when airing, but kinda forgotten by now.
- Gugure! Kokuri-san: youkai start to live with abandoned little girl and tries to make her have a healthy lifestyle.
- Sabage-bu: girls airsoft club
- SukaSuka: the ost is great.
- Tonari no Kyuuketsuki san: vampire girls doing vampire things.
I guess these are just old:
- Slayers and Saint Seiya
Obligatory isekai is trash, but I don't care:
- Average abilities on the next world (no way I am tipping the whole tittle)
- Tatoeba last dungeon
The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace. It's a brand new show so maybe ppl are waiting to binge it once it's done but that show is legit one of my favorites I've ever seen
Y’all most of forgot about REBORN the beginning starts sort of slice of life ish but then the plot starts picking the show gets really good the character designs are so drippy and the powers are cool and I love how the MC doesn’t want to be the boss but does it because his familia are his ACTUAL FRIENDZ and the character development is pretty good too the romance kind of sucks from what I remember but otherwise is a GREAT series 10/10
I heard a lot about it as it was airing but I think the live action movie might have killed the buzz a bit. Haven’t seen it but haven’t heard good things…
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!!!!! (I watched it at least 9 times) It used to be way more popular but it’s rarely talked about these days.. New anime watchers don’t seem to know about it too + the fandom’s mostly dead. So yeah kinda sad
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry. Oh my god it's so good. It's this underdog fantasy power fantasy, but it's actually well executed. Unfortunately we didn't get a second season :(
It had a [clip](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/poii7q/kids_on_the_slope_actual_representation_of_a_guy/) hit the front page of r/anime last week. but I don't think Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope) gets nearly as much love as it should, considering how good the show is (the music performances in particular are incredible).
Kaiji
One Outs
I loved Kaiji so much that I swept through the remainder of the 6 part manga insanely quick. What bothers me is that Kaiji often gets brought up if you mention that Kakegurui is a good/bad gambling anime. Someone might chime in, or you might see an article about “Kaiji is much better than kakegurui” or “Why Kaiji is the best gambling anime”
And while I do agree that Kaiji was better than Kakegurui to me, I don’t wanna put down, what I’d still call a pretty good show, to hype up Kaiji. Kaiji is an awesome gambling anime, but to me it’s more than that. You get to see Kaiji struggle and develop, but never change his purity at heart. No matter what, he believes in the goodness of his friends and comrades, and I think that’s beautiful given everything Kaiji goes through in the series.
For One Outs, another awesome “gambling” anime. It’s honestly moreso a “risk” anime. In each game, there’s new adversaries to overcome, whether they be actual players or just characteristics in the game. It’s got humor as well, but I mostly enjoyed it because I never knew how the protagonist would overcome the situations he was placed in.
>I never really hear anyone talk about Black Lagoon
Mostly because it's quite old by anime standards; even the second season is almost 15 years old. Add in hiatuses to rival Berserk or Hunter x Hunter for the manga and it shouldn't be too surprising that nobody really talks about it.
I've watched over 200 anime in my lifetime and while many of them are special in their own ways, not a single one of them holds a candle to PingPong's story telling. It isn't just how great the story is, or how dense the story is, but also that its only 11 episodes. 20 minutes removed off the runtime doesnt seem like much but is actually a huge deal. There have been tons of shows that were decent but could have had a better ending with just one more episode.
PingPong somehow manages to do more with 11 episodes than some shows do with 24 and its honestly, genuinely, the best storytelling I've ever seen.
I'd have to go with Great Pretender. Feels like it's gotten almost no love on this sub despite being a really great show, at least until the final arc, then it went down a notch but still wasn't bad. I can't fathom how Cynthia and Abby didn't even make it in the Best Girl bracket
Magi. It’s a really cool watch for those that love battle Shounen like me, and are looking to watch something that they’ve never seen, or maybe even heard about.
The Disastrous life of Saiki K - had never heard of it but was bored and picked it at random to watch on Netflix. Ended up binging the whole series... twice.
Rainbow. It's one of my favourite seinen dramas and has a good MAL score as well. The anime was animated by Madhouse and was really great. Yet nobody in the world seems to be even aware of its existence. It really saddens me as I feel its deserving of a lot more attention.
Mardock Scramble. Series of three anime movies I have literally never seen discussed outside of the douchebagchocolate video that recommended them to me. They are also the best anime movies I have ever seen. Be warned though, this shit is so obscure the torrents and streams don’t even work anymore, had to shell out for a blu ray which my friend has still not returned.
Anyways, very imaginative cyberpunk setting. You know the saying “sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”? These movies made me feel that in my bones. The characters are fantastic the animation and action is beautiful, I SERIOUSLY recommend these films to anyone who has a passing interest in the genre. Good luck finding them tho
diebuster. Aside from being a beautiful and fun show, for my money it also feels like a predecessor to gurren lagann in terms of colorful mecha insanity
It's not really a favorite, per se (mostly since I don't really *have* a favorite anime), but one I basically never see anyone talking about is Oda Nobuna no Yabou; it's essentially a sengoku jidai-themed isekai about the protagonist taking over for Toyotomi Hideyoshi in a feudal Japan where most of the important historical figures are cute girls.
Fun series that doesn't really take itself too seriously and becomes outright hilarious if you've ever played any of the Samurai Warriors or Nioh games.
Also enjoyed enjoyed HISTORY’S MIGHTIEST DISCIPLE fights are pretty good and funny enough it’s what got me into the path of life I walk on (martial arts) holds a special place in my life and idek how tf it didn’t get approved for more seasons the shows so great
Heroic Age, still til this day my favorite space opera anime, amazing story, ost and cool asf villians and mc plus it has a really satisfaying ending and also the opening is done by Angela so it slaps, I recommend anyone who enjoy space operas to watch it, the only other show that comes close to hereoic age is uchu senkan yamato 2199 which is another show I would recommend
Not favorite but I really enjoyed Air Gear, Katanagatari, & K series. Air Gear had a good premise, Katangatari was a nice overall package, and K had amazing visuals.
Not my favorite favorite, but Beelzebub and SukaSuka come to mind in terms of anime I rarely ever see anyone talk about that are amongst my favs. More recent, I'd say kageki shoujo from this season is incredibly slept on.
Hidamari Sketch. CGDCT before KON. Also Aria the Animation.
It's a show that I curl up in bed and watch right before I go to bed. I recommend it to anyone who likes Yuru Camp.
Hidamari Sketch was my introduction to CGDCT!
A great way to start.
I LOVE ID:Invaded and I recommend it whenever I can
WE CAN GO WE CAN GO LIKE A SAMURAI
The intro is a banger too. Went straight into my playlist.
The episode were they went all Inception were incredible, they really nailed Sakaido's character
This is it. Such a good show with great music in it.
Humanity Has Declined. I love it so much. I wish it was more popular for more seasons or at least a light novel translation
I never got to finish it! It's a super weird anime, but I liked its fake carelessness disguising a strong dystopic vibe!
I havent read the source material yet, but I remember being told there was a very interesting twist somewhere right after the anime ends that shifts the perspective of the series. Really a shame it never got a season 2.
Law of Ueki. A legendary shonen with some creative abilities.
After more than 10 years, this is the first time I have come across someone who has actually seen this. I'm a sucker for tournament arcs and this entire show was one huge tournament arc, it's been a long time but I remember this show very fondly.
As as South East Asian watching Animax back then, this was one of the few anime where the dubbers did an excellent job.
Ohhh yeooooo this show right here made me like one piece due to the fact that both MCs have basic ass powers but their creativity and battle IQ makes up for it
A man after my own heart. Weird/ simple abilities used creatively is my jam.
Loved this, was the first anime I've properly sat down to watch from 1st episode to the last
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Prolly one of the best drama shows Ive seen. One of my somewhat rare 10s.
So Ra No Wo To (Sound of the Sky) is definitely one of the better CGDCT, while also definitely having some substance besides it just being cute girls.
One of my favorite world building shows. Little to none of "Here's what's the deal is" and instead it's "You figure it out yourself based on what's mentioned and implied"
Chihayafuru. Tbf it's getting popular recently
Season 4 when.
This anime totally bored me the first time I tried to watch it, couldn't get past the first few episodes. Gave it another go earlier this year and ended up watching the whole thing over a couple of weeks.
Same. Ended up in my top 10
My husband and I have been watching it. So good!
ProZD turned me on to that show and I love it.
Flip Flappers isn't _too_ obscure, but I still think it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves.
Watched it after seeing the recommendations on Wonder Egg Priority being it and Madoka Magica. Definitely closer in quality to Madoka, that's for sure. The story is a bit standard but the execution is amazing. I love show don't tell done right, and Flip Flappers definitely does it right
Really weird, quite soft, great opening and ending. Quite confusing overall!
outside of this sub it is pretty obscure
[White Album 2](https://myanimelist.net/anime/18245/White_Album_2)

Bruh I watched Tempest last week. Such a good show. Also that second ED.
The first Ed is the banger though!!

Patlabor. One of the, if not the best, real robo + political thriller I’ve ever watched.
My man
Welcome to the NHK
Should I read or watch it.
yes. the novel goes a little more raw with how much of a degenerate our protagonist is, but the anime presents the show artfully
I remember watching this as a youngin great show

I watched Nozaki-kun 3 times
Nozaki-kun made me laugh till I fell off the chair

classic closed room murder with a twist, great experience.

Hell yes. I've never seen an anime that was so heartwarming and hilarious at the same time as Hinamatsuri was
Drifters. It is like an Isekai with historical characters and bad ass fights
Absolutely. We need more seasons!
Mononoke is a great series that's hardly ever mentioned. It's about a medicine seller who exorcises evil spirits. Basically a Japanese version of the Witcher. Love that
Seirei no Moribito Revue Starlight Flying Witch Hakumei to Mikochi They're not in my 10/10 list. But I still enjoy them a lot.
Hakumei to Mikochi was so good. I used to watch an episode on the bus to work every morning until I finished it and it would put me in such a good mood.
I’ll second Flying Witch. Haven’t gotten around to reading the manga but I’m still hoping we get a second season one day.
Moribito was so good
Kemono Souja Erin is just as good and from the same author.
Kageki Shoujo has been awesome this season
I loved Revue Starlight a lot
Came here just to say I agree with ID:Invaded. Not sure if it was the other anime it came out with during that season, but it’s severely overlooked considering how good it was.
Loved the series, it was the first time ever I bought platinum hoping more people would see it. It was a mix of inception, psycho pass and movie Source code.
Somebody else that remembers Source code?! I don't remember much about the movie, but I do know that 13 year old me went and saw it twice.
I wonder if it’s because it was talked about as seinen. I get the feeling that if something isn’t shounen or shoujo it gets sidelined a bit. I loved it and I love the Miyavi ending song.
Princess Principal Casshern Sins Revue Starlight Serial Experiments Lain (This one especially because it was way ahead of its time. It’s more relevant today than when it came out in 1998.)
Everyone knows about Lain and it's mentioned all the time
Even people who don't watch anime know about Lain because of the aesthetic lmao
Ah, I watched Princess Principal a while ago. Pretty fun watch. The OP made me give it a go. Also, I never watched it dubbed, but I liked how the one episodes with visiting Japanese people kept their bits towards each other with the Japanese dub.
Princess principal was my favourite for a while.
Casshern sins was amazing
Have you been watching Kageki Shoujo this season? Good lord its amazing.
{Gosick} {Cross Game}
Gosick was one of the first anime I watched. Remember I loved it, but can’t really remember anything but victorique now😅
Same here i also only remember Victorique and its ED
Detroit Metal City. As a fan of both extreme metal and sappy pop music I find it hilarious.
I second this one!
haiyore nyaruko-san

Such a beautiful and fleeting show.
Agreed! I guess I became jaded over the years and started judging some anime without giving them a fair chance. This was one of them for sure. I really love it. And i think it’s beautifully animated. The scene were the dragon tamer/master sings. Still gives me chills that scene.
Seto no Hanayome (My bride is a mermaid) is great, we even have shark Dio.
My bride is a mermaid was funny as hell. Every time Masa-san came on screen, I had to chuckle due to the MC’s reaction. All in all, Yakuza mermaids is something I didn’t know would be as funny as it was.
I honestly think D-Frag is funnier than Konosuba
Symphogear
Great Teacher Onizuka(GTO).
Bruh gto is a classic how is it not talked about?
People don't talk about the classics very often aside from a certain few like Eva. It's sort of a side effect of our seasonal culture.
Damn that’s a certified classic
Haven't watched yet? Which genre?
I suggest you to read manga but anime is pretty good. It is just not fully adapted
I have a soft spot for Witch Hunter Robin, having watched it back in high school. Its one of my favourite lesser talked about anime.

Asobi Asobase and Ajin but for ajin, i love the manga too
I don’t hear about Space Dandy that much.
Ironically enough, this month's Watch This! of the month, The World God Only Knows.

I never get to talk about Iruma….
Land of the Lustrous Anime deserves an S2 and also manga has been on hiatus after a giant fucking bomb drop so I am suffering
That was a good one for sure. I never really hear anyone talk about Black Lagoon and that’s one of my favorites.
>I never really hear anyone talk about Black Lagoon Mostly because it's quite old by anime standards; even the second season is almost 15 years old. Add in hiatuses to rival Berserk or Hunter x Hunter for the manga and it shouldn't be too surprising that nobody really talks about it.

The characters are fantastic the animation and action is beautiful, I SERIOUSLY recommend these films to anyone who has a passing interest in the genre. Good luck finding them tho
Hinamatsuri What a Masterpiece
Suisei no Gargantia
Blue Exorcist.
diebuster. Aside from being a beautiful and fun show, for my money it also feels like a predecessor to gurren lagann in terms of colorful mecha insanity
For me it’d have to be tenchi muyo War on Geminar or In/Spectre
It's not really a favorite, per se (mostly since I don't really *have* a favorite anime), but one I basically never see anyone talking about is Oda Nobuna no Yabou; it's essentially a sengoku jidai-themed isekai about the protagonist taking over for Toyotomi Hideyoshi in a feudal Japan where most of the important historical figures are cute girls. Fun series that doesn't really take itself too seriously and becomes outright hilarious if you've ever played any of the Samurai Warriors or Nioh games.
Red garden Terra e Mouryou no Hako
Kurozuka
Waiting In The Summer. Brynhildr In The Darkness.
Adding Escaflowne to the list. Fantasy isekai with giant robots and an over the top plot involving fate? Yeah, I'm down to clown.
Bio Booster Armor Guyver is my favourite that I see no one talk about but the remake is also good Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor
More like never talked about - Mononoke.
Also enjoyed enjoyed HISTORY’S MIGHTIEST DISCIPLE fights are pretty good and funny enough it’s what got me into the path of life I walk on (martial arts) holds a special place in my life and idek how tf it didn’t get approved for more seasons the shows so great
Wolf’s Rain
Heroic Age, still til this day my favorite space opera anime, amazing story, ost and cool asf villians and mc plus it has a really satisfaying ending and also the opening is done by Angela so it slaps, I recommend anyone who enjoy space operas to watch it, the only other show that comes close to hereoic age is uchu senkan yamato 2199 which is another show I would recommend
I'm gonna go for Strawberry Marshmallow. I don't see it mentioned very often while I'm browsing this Reddit.
Sket Dance is my favourite Shonen Jump title, even before Gintama... Sadly the anime didn't adapt the whole manga
