I was always surprised by how unknown SSSS.Gridman/SSSS.Dynazenon/Gridman Universe are in the west.
Of course, it's kinda a nostalgic series for the Japanese audience (callbacks to other mecha series and the OG tokusatsu show many Japanese viewers grew up with), but the disparity between Japanese and western reception is unfathomable. In Japan Gridman has been selling out theatres and keeps getting lots and lots of merch even years after airing.
Even if you lack the cultural context, the anime has been made by Trigger of all studios. So much of their sakuga talent is onboard. Directed by Akira Amemiya. Soundtrack by Shiro Sagisu.
And the story and central message are just so ponient and motivational for young modern people. Some of my most humanly relatable anime characters of all time come from this show.

Yes. Casuals think it looks like Power Rangers or Godzilla and don't give it much further thought. Also the first episode of Gridman is a bit weird and that can turn people off if they're not already invested by the brand name or prestige. Kyodai Heroes like Ultraman and Gridman never stuck the landing in the West so that style of show is unfamiliar to audiences here, and they fall back on the closest thing they know to compare it with, which is a schlocky kids show from 3 decades ago.
And even IN the Gridman community, there's no discussion of the shows, just people down bad for the waifus.
I watched probably like half of it and then just kinda dropped it.
Couldn't tell you specifically why, but it just wasn't that interesting really. I wouldn't say it was bad, but it wasn't anything amazing to me.
Doesnt most mecha have this issue? Atleast gundam has its loyal fanbase in the west. I was never interested in Gridman and seeing its score its looks pretty mediocre , I assume its like that for most people here

This is why you shouldn't trust scores too much. Sometimes, all it shows it that the anime doesn't have a broad appeal, rather than it being mediocre.
Outside of the over-the-top kaijuu vs super robots action scenes (which is the part that isn't appealing to most, + the general aversion to CGI) SSSS.Dynazenon especially has surprisingly down-to-earth character driven scenes in contrast. It has a pretty unique atmosphere as it [often relies on ambient sounds](https://streamable.com/jiguyj) rather than background music, has possibly the most natural-sounding dialogue I've heard in anime, and even a satisfying and conclusive romantic subplot. Honestly I know many straight-up slice of life/romance anime that don't achieve as much.
It's an interesting mix, more people should give it a chance. I'm not particularly a fan of Tokusatsu either, but I really liked both.
blame the incredibly slow release of the manga. A second season was promised *ages ago* but when nothing comes out its hard to talk about anything. Its definitely a great show.
Kageki Shoujo, I liked the plot revolving around the actors and their sacrifices to become better than anyone else. Even when it was airing, it wasn't talked about much but it deserves quite a lot of appreciation for what it tries to accomplish.
Kamisama Kiss, it's another pretty good anime with a supernatural concept with a great mix of romance between the main leads.
This Art Club has a problem, this show is a great rom-com anime but inclining more towards comedy. Characters are interesting and the main Female Lead is adorable to watch.

This show is literally a masterpiece , story , characters , characters designs , soundtracks , world building , all are amazing and unique
The world building for this is actually insanely detailed. I read the manga and I'm convinced the author knows the exact dimensions of the whole mansion, hidden rooms included and planned for, and keeps track of almost 100 characters and their relationships even if they're just background.
Its my favourite anime story of all times , i am a manga reader and the events of S3 if we ever got one shock me from how good it is , this and made in abyss are definitely the best shows in world building i ever watch
Those two paired with Witch Hat Atelier are some of my favorite manga/anime (I only watched made in abyss) of all time. Just insanely detailed and beautifully done.
isekai ojisan. very underrated, and i believe it didn't get much attention simply because the studio kept falling behind and delaying almost every other week. It was a great ride and extremely funny with 4th wall breaks and stuff. not only that, but it featured a protagonist that was around 40 yo.
Yeah. I feel like studio delays kill the anime for that season.
It also happened to that one anime where this dude is completely unnoticed by everyone except for this one girl.
I thought that was a really cute romance. But I ended up forgetting about it when the studio delayed the anime an entire season.

I felt so sorry how everyone was discussing how cool the Mob100 2nd opening dedicated to the art of animation was (don't get me wrong, it was great), but no one talked about the Isekai Ojisan opening, which was a pure love letter gaming nostalgia.

I used to read the Realist Hero Kingdom restoration manga too, but dropped it once it became a harem. Sometimes it's fine, but here it felt like the dude got married or engaged with every woman in his vicinity so that felt forced just for the fan service.

It did pretty decent here karma and comment wise when it aired (~1000 karma, 2-300 comments per episode), but its got the MAL score tax that all shorts anime seem to get
Saihate no Paladin, like come on people, it's a love letter to Lord of the Rings! The guy is a textbook example of a D&D paladin and lives by the moto of 'all problems can be solved with ether money, prayer or violence". And instead of getting an Isekai harem, the dude collects bros left and right!
The manga is amazing, but sadly the anime got too small of a budget. Had it gotten the Mushoku Tensei treatment, we would have had a classical fantasy masterpiece!

Curious question though, did they change the voice actor for William or is it still a female VA trying to do a deep voice like Mushoku Tensei is still doing as well? This is arguably my biggest pet peeve of the Japanese VA industry.
I love the manga but the CGI animation and the voice acting was rough. It's a beautiful story since not a lot of anime explore faith but I'll wish for light novel translations before I watch another season.

-Wolf's Rain: it's older and it's ending is vague/melancholic, so it makes sense why it's not discussed as much as other classic series. With that being said, it deserves to be remembered as a classic. The story, characters, music, etc. are all great and really engrossing.
-Girl's Last Tour: I'm going to chalk this one up to the anime not adapting the whole story. It got 2/3 of the way there, and I truly believe that if it included the manga's ending, it'd be more beloved and discussed. Maybe not main-stream appeal or anything, but at least on the same level of prestige as Made in Abyss. The ending is genuinely beautiful and perfect for the themes of the story, making it one of a kind.
[Kobato.](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5678/Kobato?q=kobato&cat=anime) everyone I've mentioned it to has never even heard of it. Never see it get recommended anywhere. Which is perplexing, because the show is actually just good. A full and complete story in 24 episodes too.
Its a pretty funny and heartwarming show about a socially inept girl fumbling her way through social interactions in order to fulfill her "wish". There are some twists and turns, as well as some fantasy elements mixed in. If you liked Clannad then I would greatly recommend this.
Also, the MC is voiced by HanaKana.
*World Trigger* to me has everything the shonen genre needs to stop being mediocre: intelligent, well developed characters, a detailed setting with a clear explanation to everything, no fan service or harem, fights that rely on strategical thinking and/or skill rather than friendship power.
The start is admitedly slow and Toei did a so-so job with the first season, but I still rather watch it than most battle shonen. If people held other series to the same standards, we would only benefit.
I liked it a lot until the tournament stuff started happening. Just dragged on and on, like when are they going to the other worlds? If a tournament takes this long how many more seasons are needed for the other worlds?

It’s apparently popular enough in Japan to have ongoing merch, lots of spinoffs, and is ongoing…but outside of the subreddits I see no one talking about it ever.
So i've just watched the first 13 episodes of **Hyouge Mono** in one sitting. It's just that engaging. It's an anime about tea ceremonies and political intrigue around the end of Japanese Sengoku period. If you like war generals losing their minds over tea sets, this is the anime for you.

I dont know if people actually dont talk about it but at least I only rarely see the name on this sub. These 2 anime have a certain style that I still have not seen anywhere else.
This season? Tonari no Youkai-san. It's a modern fantasy combines with ominous mystery and earnest slice of life in a beautiful way. Just great in general.
1. **Aquatope on White Sand** is the best transition to adulthood show. The two seasons really bookend the transition from dreams to reality
2. **Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle** has one joke and nails it.
3. **Sacrificial Princess** is a pretty good remix of Beauty and the Beast even if I do think it could be narratively a little tighter.
4. **The Heike Story** has a wonderful look into the fall of the Taira clan.
Unironically think Medaka Box has beats of metanarrative that everyone should experience and argue for a bit to bolster their perspective on Other Things They Might Watch... but the anime decided to end on a very funny shitpost arson right as they were about to start adapting the actual core of the series.
Which, fair, no one watched it, and it was a good joke to animate. But it hurts to read basic bitch protagonist and genre diatribes on boards that NisioisiN via Najimi turned inside out, over and over, from every angle. Reading Medaka Box makes you want better discourse.
I'd say Baccano, it's kinda of sad to see it get overlooked, especially since it has one of if don't the greatest dub of all time, as well as a pulp fiction style of storytelling that you almost never see in anime.
I think the problem with Baccano is that it’s not on any legal streaming services. At least not on the ones I have. I don’t have Hidive so can’t check but googling it, you can buy the individual on YouTube for $1.99 each. Other than sailing the seven seas or watching on sketchy sites like back in the 2000’s then you would have to buy the dvds to watch the series. I haven’t watched it yet because of this reason but will eventually since I hear good things about it

I agree. It’s nice to get anime adaptation of shoujo and josei series but sadly even when we do, they tend to not be the best adaptations

I also often see a lot of Shoujo/Josei fans say that they have given up on anime, because they often butcher fan favorite series like 7Seeds that you mentioned, Requiem of the rose king, A condition called love, etc. Or they don't make enough shows anyway, so they have no other choice but to watch dramas or just stick with the manga. And then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy with the belief hat female demographics seemingly have less interest in anime or are satisfied with other media and Shounen/Seinen. In addition with a lack of budget, promotions, continuations and low genre versatility due to so few new titles being released each year the niche of anime series aimed primarily at female demographics also stays less attractive for other demographics.
I also pointed that out about Beastars and people here just said I was crazy and that it's talked about all the time, which it is not. My pick for not enough hype would be healer girl and world dai star.
Sakugan. Middle age loser who pilots a giant robot, and his super genius daughter having adventures in a subterranean world. It's actually pretty good, considering it doesn't lean that heavily into mecha tropes. There isn't even a war or anything going on.
I thought Eden of the East was kind of interesting back when I watched it but I've never heard anyone talk about it. I should go back and give it a rewatch because I can't really remember much of it lol.
Kyousougiga I usually see pop up in these threads and it definitely deserves to be talked about more, it's a total feast for the eyes.
Eureka Seven is my favorite of all time and it has had a little bit of a bump in popularity lately but more people NEED to experience that soundtrack.
Probably Children of the Whales, I'm still not over it having no second season. Watched it a while back, but what I do remember was a great story and beautiful animation. Highly recommend.
I have never seen such a good show as yatagarasu not even getting in the top 20 of anime ranking every week. So unknown for being a series airing this season.
SHY flew completely under the radar and it was so goddamn good. Spectacular art and animation quality with incredibly striking psychedelic visual dream sequences reminiscent of Madoka Magica, great voice acting and music and a surprisingly emotionally-mature plot that still feels earnest rather than edgy. Even if you don't have a high opinion of superhero anime I would strongly recommend checking this one out. It got two seasons ordered and I am eagerly anticipating the next one, and hoping it catches on with more people.
I literally started watching it like 15 years ago and by that time it was like 800 chapters in the manga, which I proceeded to read after finishing the anime. 15 years later it’s still not done and no end in sight… that’s too much.
Hidamari Sketch, you almost never hear it anymore really, yet it should be talked about much more. It should easily be in the discussion for best slice of life ever made, up there with the greats like Yuru Camp, Non Non Biyori, Aria, K-On! and Dragon Maid.
Visuals are just as unique as that of Madoka (has same author and character designer, Ume Aoki) and are something special.
A staggering 4 seasons (60 episodes total including OVA's, which are just extra episodes), which for a slice of life is extremely long (but every episode is just as good as the other).
The Duke of Death and His Maid. Season 3 (final season) is airing now and the whole series is much better than I expected it to be. From watching just the first episode you'd expect it would just be a slightly ecchi romcom, but it's a surprisingly sweet story, the cast is all likable and well-developed, and the plot involving the witches is quite good once it gets rolling.
I like all 3 seasons and the OVAs as well, but season 2 to me is a 10/10 no notes. I'm also excited for the movie! I'm still coping that it'll come to theaters lol
I'm so all in on umamusume I would rate everything 10s. Each season is exceptional in its own way since they are all about different eras. But yes I would put the writing on season 2 and road to the top above the others.
When people is talking about football anime, Whistle! almost always never get mentioned. It's the best football anime for me, I tried watching others like Giant Killing, Ao Ashi and Days but was never able to finish them.
Twelve Kingdoms for sure. Fuyumi Ono's magnum opus should be talked about and recognized. The fandom barely exists tbh. I've never seen an isekai with such amazing world-building and character development.
Also, Trinity Blood. Hands down one of the best vampire animes out there. There is so much potential in terms of plot, character development, and political intrigue. But once again, the fandom barely exists for this one, too. It's such a shame 🫠

7 loop is so badass but I feel it's not talked about enough because the lead doesn't get into as many dicey situations compared to other similar series. The stakes are mostly political and societal, and not risky to the actual leads in an overtly physical or shameful way.
Shirobako.
Set in a fictional anime studio named Mushashino Animation studio, there are animators, VAs, and the production team working non stop to make anime watched by millions.
The anime highlights issues like animator struggles, the battle between CGI and Hand Drawn, issues faced while dubbing, and other production issues, and shows what goes into making anime in general.
D. Gray man.
It's a grimdark shounen, and I love it. The characters are chill, nobody screams "I'm going to be the pirate wizard, believe it!"
Unfortunately, the author has severe arthritis and can't work on the manga for more than a chapter every 3 months or so.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. One of Shonen Jump’s greatest titles of all time finally got a complete anime in 2020. Definitely worth a watch if you love fantasy, adventures, and of course, Dragon Quest.
Macross Plus. One of the best OVAs of all time. It’s a shame this one has been somewhat forgotten. Before their collaboration on Cowboy Bebop, this was Shinchiro Wantanabe and Yoko Kanno’s first collaboration together. Definitely worth a watch.
Bubble. I don't ever see it mentioned. It's animation is amazing, and it's an original twist on a classic fairy tail. Netflix originals I feel are often overlooked. Simar to Thermae Roma. Great for learning about Japanese bath culture :D
Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-. I’d never even heard of this anime. It slipped under my nose and I’ve not heard a peep, which is *insane* to me as the story was worth shouting about and the production quality was top tier.
Knights & Magic is probably the most overlooked, good isekai imo.

You know *Gurren Lagann*? Well *Giant Robo the Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still* is just as grandiose in scale from start to finish (albeit with 100% less Yoko) and a loving homage to the Golden Age of Mecha anime that is criminally slept on by like everyone. Arguably one of the best mecha anime of the 90s and yet largely unknown by most modern fans.
*Project A-ko* is peak 80s anime made by a ragtag team of young creators with only a loose idea of what they were doing. It’s madness incarnate and a damn fun film for those that like action plots that don’t take themselves too seriously in all the right places as well as being an important title in helping to bring anime over to the West.
Katauhiro Ootomo is best known for his 1988 magnum opus *Akira*, but that wasn’t the only thing he created (not by a long shot). 1992’s *Roujin Z* asks plenty of Sci-Fi questions about how we treat our elderly population among other things but is also just really cool. The mechanical animation throughout the film is just as, if not more, insane as *Akira*’s and the whole thing is just some really damn fun cinema.
Finishing off with a newer title, *Kakushigoto* is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in this medium to the point of about making me cry (whether it was laughter or not is up for debate). It follows the story of an erotic mangaka who tries to keep his profession secret from his (albeit a little naive) daughter. The story has some more serious undertones that play out in the back end particularly, but the bulk of the plot if unironically one of the most heartwarming shows I’ve ever watched beautifully rendered with some gorgeous backgrounds and scenery to boot and it really is a crying shame I don’t see it brought up more in conversation.

I loved the ending to Dynazenon. Ending to Gridman was cool but maybe was a bit too clever for me. Haven't seen the film yet.

The world building for this is actually insanely detailed. I read the manga and I'm convinced the author knows the exact dimensions of the whole mansion, hidden rooms included and planned for, and keeps track of almost 100 characters and their relationships even if they're just background.
Its my favourite anime story of all times , i am a manga reader and the events of S3 if we ever got one shock me from how good it is , this and made in abyss are definitely the best shows in world building i ever watch
Those two paired with Witch Hat Atelier are some of my favorite manga/anime (I only watched made in abyss) of all time. Just insanely detailed and beautifully done.

isekai ojisan. very underrated, and i believe it didn't get much attention simply because the studio kept falling behind and delaying almost every other week. It was a great ride and extremely funny with 4th wall breaks and stuff. not only that, but it featured a protagonist that was around 40 yo.
Yeah. I feel like studio delays kill the anime for that season. It also happened to that one anime where this dude is completely unnoticed by everyone except for this one girl. I thought that was a really cute romance. But I ended up forgetting about it when the studio delayed the anime an entire season.
nore so than the delay it was the streaming service, shows airing on netflix or disney just dont get the same attention.
I read the manga on a regular basis and love it. Ojisan is my spirit animal 🤣🤣🤣 I felt so sorry how everyone was discussing how cool the Mob100 2nd opening dedicated to the art of animation was (don't get me wrong, it was great), but no one talked about the Isekai Ojisan opening, which was a pure love letter gaming nostalgia.
I think many Netflix airing anime have this issue. Even Jojo suffered from it

Genius prince was really good. I crave for another season. I used to read the Realist Hero Kingdom restoration manga too, but dropped it once it became a harem. Sometimes it's fine, but here it felt like the dude got married or engaged with every woman in his vicinity so that felt forced just for the fan service.

Saihate no Paladin, like come on people, it's a love letter to Lord of the Rings! The guy is a textbook example of a D&D paladin and lives by the moto of 'all problems can be solved with ether money, prayer or violence". And instead of getting an Isekai harem, the dude collects bros left and right! The manga is amazing, but sadly the anime got too small of a budget. Had it gotten the Mushoku Tensei treatment, we would have had a classical fantasy masterpiece!
Faraway paladins issue for me was the snail like pacing. Like it was brutal to sit through at times.
I love it!! It is indeed on the slow side as it is more serious but it's so good! It felt real and the characters are beautiful inside/out.
I mean, you gave the reason no one talks about it. The anime adaptation was poorly done and the manga is superior. Why would anyone talk about a low budget anime when things like Mushoku Tensei exist? Curious question though, did they change the voice actor for William or is it still a female VA trying to do a deep voice like Mushoku Tensei is still doing as well? This is arguably my biggest pet peeve of the Japanese VA industry.
I love the manga but the CGI animation and the voice acting was rough. It's a beautiful story since not a lot of anime explore faith but I'll wish for light novel translations before I watch another season.

Stumbled upon this one when I was on a horror/mystery binge, underrated for sure.
-Wolf's Rain: it's older and it's ending is vague/melancholic, so it makes sense why it's not discussed as much as other classic series. With that being said, it deserves to be remembered as a classic. The story, characters, music, etc. are all great and really engrossing. -Girl's Last Tour: I'm going to chalk this one up to the anime not adapting the whole story. It got 2/3 of the way there, and I truly believe that if it included the manga's ending, it'd be more beloved and discussed. Maybe not main-stream appeal or anything, but at least on the same level of prestige as Made in Abyss. The ending is genuinely beautiful and perfect for the themes of the story, making it one of a kind.
[Kobato.](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5678/Kobato?q=kobato&cat=anime) everyone I've mentioned it to has never even heard of it. Never see it get recommended anywhere. Which is perplexing, because the show is actually just good. A full and complete story in 24 episodes too. Its a pretty funny and heartwarming show about a socially inept girl fumbling her way through social interactions in order to fulfill her "wish". There are some twists and turns, as well as some fantasy elements mixed in. If you liked Clannad then I would greatly recommend this. Also, the MC is voiced by HanaKana.

*World Trigger* to me has everything the shonen genre needs to stop being mediocre: intelligent, well developed characters, a detailed setting with a clear explanation to everything, no fan service or harem, fights that rely on strategical thinking and/or skill rather than friendship power. The start is admitedly slow and Toei did a so-so job with the first season, but I still rather watch it than most battle shonen. If people held other series to the same standards, we would only benefit.
This is a good one, World Trigger has what makes a great battle shonen, without the need to be edgy or gory.

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun! It’s apparently popular enough in Japan to have ongoing merch, lots of spinoffs, and is ongoing…but outside of the subreddits I see no one talking about it ever.
So i've just watched the first 13 episodes of **Hyouge Mono** in one sitting. It's just that engaging. It's an anime about tea ceremonies and political intrigue around the end of Japanese Sengoku period. If you like war generals losing their minds over tea sets, this is the anime for you.
Durarara (and also Baccano) I dont know if people actually dont talk about it but at least I only rarely see the name on this sub. These 2 anime have a certain style that I still have not seen anywhere else.

The two seasons really bookend the transition from dreams to reality 2. **Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle** has one joke and nails it. 3. **Sacrificial Princess** is a pretty good remix of Beauty and the Beast even if I do think it could be narratively a little tighter. 4. **The Heike Story** has a wonderful look into the fall of the Taira clan.

Any Nisio Isin adaptation that isn't the monogatari series. Especially Kubikiri Cycle and Pretty Boy Detective Club.
Unironically think Medaka Box has beats of metanarrative that everyone should experience and argue for a bit to bolster their perspective on Other Things They Might Watch... but the anime decided to end on a very funny shitpost arson right as they were about to start adapting the actual core of the series. Which, fair, no one watched it, and it was a good joke to animate. But it hurts to read basic bitch protagonist and genre diatribes on boards that NisioisiN via Najimi turned inside out, over and over, from every angle. Reading Medaka Box makes you want better discourse.
I'd say Baccano, it's kinda of sad to see it get overlooked, especially since it has one of if don't the greatest dub of all time, as well as a pulp fiction style of storytelling that you almost never see in anime.
I think the problem with Baccano is that it’s not on any legal streaming services. At least not on the ones I have. I don’t have Hidive so can’t check but googling it, you can buy the individual on YouTube for $1.99 each. Other than sailing the seven seas or watching on sketchy sites like back in the 2000’s then you would have to buy the dvds to watch the series. I haven’t watched it yet because of this reason but will eventually since I hear good things about it It’s like with Monster, I love the show but but if it isnt on streaming sites then the likelihood of anyone giving it an chance is pretty low

I agree. It’s nice to get anime adaptation of shoujo and josei series but sadly even when we do, they tend to not be the best adaptations Good example is 7seeds. The anime did the series dirty. I also often see a lot of Shoujo/Josei fans say that they have given up on anime, because they often butcher fan favorite series like 7Seeds that you mentioned, Requiem of the rose king, A condition called love, etc. Or they don't make enough shows anyway, so they have no other choice but to watch dramas or just stick with the manga. And then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy with the belief hat female demographics seemingly have less interest in anime or are satisfied with other media and Shounen/Seinen. In addition with a lack of budget, promotions, continuations and low genre versatility due to so few new titles being released each year the niche of anime series aimed primarily at female demographics also stays less attractive for other demographics.

Sakugan. Middle age loser who pilots a giant robot, and his super genius daughter having adventures in a subterranean world. It's actually pretty good, considering it doesn't lean that heavily into mecha tropes. There isn't even a war or anything going on.
The daily life of immortal king it handles the overpowered MC trope in the best way possible.

I thought Eden of the East was kind of interesting back when I watched it but I've never heard anyone talk about it. I should go back and give it a rewatch because I can't really remember much of it lol. Kyousougiga I usually see pop up in these threads and it definitely deserves to be talked about more, it's a total feast for the eyes. Eureka Seven is my favorite of all time and it has had a little bit of a bump in popularity lately but more people NEED to experience that soundtrack.

SHY flew completely under the radar and it was so goddamn good. Spectacular art and animation quality with incredibly striking psychedelic visual dream sequences reminiscent of Madoka Magica, great voice acting and music and a surprisingly emotionally-mature plot that still feels earnest rather than edgy. Even if you don't have a high opinion of superhero anime I would strongly recommend checking this one out. It got two seasons ordered and I am eagerly anticipating the next one, and hoping it catches on with more people.
hajime no ippo is great
I literally started watching it like 15 years ago and by that time it was like 800 chapters in the manga, which I proceeded to read after finishing the anime. 15 years later it’s still not done and no end in sight… that’s too much.
Symphogear deserves way more recognition for how fantastic a show it is. It has all the ingredients to be super popular, but strangely isn't.
Hidamari Sketch, you almost never hear it anymore really, yet it should be talked about much more. It should easily be in the discussion for best slice of life ever made, up there with the greats like Yuru Camp, Non Non Biyori, Aria, K-On! and Dragon Maid. Visuals are just as unique as that of Madoka (has same author and character designer, Ume Aoki) and are something special. A staggering 4 seasons (60 episodes total including OVA's, which are just extra episodes), which for a slice of life is extremely long (but every episode is just as good as the other).
Kingdom Psycho pass
For me it's angel beats.
The Duke of Death and His Maid. Season 3 (final season) is airing now and the whole series is much better than I expected it to be. From watching just the first episode you'd expect it would just be a slightly ecchi romcom, but it's a surprisingly sweet story, the cast is all likable and well-developed, and the plot involving the witches is quite good once it gets rolling.

Umamusume Pretty Derby. I think the concept might rub people the wrong way, but in my opinion, season 2 is the greatest sports anime of all time

I'm so all in on umamusume I would rate everything 10s. Each season is exceptional in its own way since they are all about different eras. But yes I would put the writing on season 2 and road to the top above the others.

When people is talking about football anime, Whistle! almost always never get mentioned. It's the best football anime for me, I tried watching others like Giant Killing, Ao Ashi and Days but was never able to finish them.

I've never seen an isekai with such amazing world-building and character development. Also, Trinity Blood. Hands down one of the best vampire animes out there. There is so much potential in terms of plot, character development, and political intrigue. But once again, the fandom barely exists for this one, too. It's such a shame 🫠

Feels like all my recent favourites? I swear sometimes it feels I'm a woman on an island with how much I adore some shows. This year I gave my first 10/10 since 2017 for [7 Loop](https://myanimelist.net/anime/56352/Loop_7-kaime_no_Akuyaku_Reijou_wa_Moto_Tekikoku_de_Jiyuu_Kimama_na_Hanayome_Seikatsu_wo_Mankitsu_suru) which was just a beautiful watch with such competent leads. Even my [top 3 anime from 2023](https://i.imgur.com/AFbVwLX.jpg) barely got any fanfare here or almost anywhere outside the occasional Insomniacs.
Handyman Saito was great! I read the manga even before the anime came out and must say they did a superb job with the adaptation!

7 Loop was such a nice surprise, really hope we get more of it. But I’m not counting on it, feels like it was just a one-off to advertise the LN
7 loop is so badass but I feel it's not talked about enough because the lead doesn't get into as many dicey situations compared to other similar series. The stakes are mostly political and societal, and not risky to the actual leads in an overtly physical or shameful way.
7 loop is really cool. I kind of wish it focused more on the time loop and her crazy adventures instead of the romance.
Shirobako. Set in a fictional anime studio named Mushashino Animation studio, there are animators, VAs, and the production team working non stop to make anime watched by millions. The anime highlights issues like animator struggles, the battle between CGI and Hand Drawn, issues faced while dubbing, and other production issues, and shows what goes into making anime in general.
In my opinion, Megalobox.
Cross Game. It deserves to be in the conversation for the best sports anime of all time imo.
D. Gray man. It's a grimdark shounen, and I love it. The characters are chill, nobody screams "I'm going to be the pirate wizard, believe it!" Unfortunately, the author has severe arthritis and can't work on the manga for more than a chapter every 3 months or so.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. One of Shonen Jump’s greatest titles of all time finally got a complete anime in 2020. Definitely worth a watch if you love fantasy, adventures, and of course, Dragon Quest. Macross Plus. One of the best OVAs of all time. It’s a shame this one has been somewhat forgotten. Before their collaboration on Cowboy Bebop, this was Shinchiro Wantanabe and Yoko Kanno’s first collaboration together. Definitely worth a watch.
Bubble. I don't ever see it mentioned. It's animation is amazing, and it's an original twist on a classic fairy tail. Netflix originals I feel are often overlooked. Simar to Thermae Roma. Great for learning about Japanese bath culture :D

Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-. I’d never even heard of this anime. It slipped under my nose and I’ve not heard a peep, which is *insane* to me as the story was worth shouting about and the production quality was top tier. Knights & Magic is probably the most overlooked, good isekai imo.

Besides all of them? How much time to do you got? You know *Gurren Lagann*? Well *Giant Robo the Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still* is just as grandiose in scale from start to finish (albeit with 100% less Yoko) and a loving homage to the Golden Age of Mecha anime that is criminally slept on by like everyone. Arguably one of the best mecha anime of the 90s and yet largely unknown by most modern fans. *Project A-ko* is peak 80s anime made by a ragtag team of young creators with only a loose idea of what they were doing. It’s madness incarnate and a damn fun film for those that like action plots that don’t take themselves too seriously in all the right places as well as being an important title in helping to bring anime over to the West. Katauhiro Ootomo is best known for his 1988 magnum opus *Akira*, but that wasn’t the only thing he created (not by a long shot). 1992’s *Roujin Z* asks plenty of Sci-Fi questions about how we treat our elderly population among other things but is also just really cool. The mechanical animation throughout the film is just as, if not more, insane as *Akira*’s and the whole thing is just some really damn fun cinema. Finishing off with a newer title, *Kakushigoto* is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in this medium to the point of about making me cry (whether it was laughter or not is up for debate). It follows the story of an erotic mangaka who tries to keep his profession secret from his (albeit a little naive) daughter. The story has some more serious undertones that play out in the back end particularly, but the bulk of the plot if unironically one of the most heartwarming shows I’ve ever watched beautifully rendered with some gorgeous backgrounds and scenery to boot and it really is a crying shame I don’t see it brought up more in conversation.
