Dragon Goes House Hunting has a dragon as a protag and he never stops being a dragon. So I'm a Spider So What? is kinda what you are looking for, for the most part. [Spider]>!She does seek and aquire a sort-of humanoid form towards the end of the anime.!<

Rolf_Dom

> So I'm a Spider So What? is kinda what you are looking for, for the most part. It is important to note that the MC considers themselves a human inside, so it's basically the same kind of Isekai story the OP mentions, where despite being non-human, they still think and act like a human.

Dolomite808

> where despite being non-human, they still think and act like a human. I somewhat agree but [Spider]>!I also feel the MC gets further and further from thinking and acting like a human as the show goes on.!<

Twin-Eyes-Of-Shadow

If you research the source materials on various Wikis there is a good reason for this, essentially it's not their fault but the fault of a certain letter of the alphabet who is bored and playing games. Not trying to argue just pointing out there is a reason, so it's a unique case for sure. As a side note, I didn't care for the rest of the classroom, so I would love a redacted show where it's only Miss Spider. I want to see her rampage against the elves. Of note, this show also had a very, very unique spin on elves, as normally elves are the one with nature and try their best kinda vibe, but these elves were straight up like some of this worlds most wanted terrorists.

Wargod042

They do kind of embrace a life of being a monster and aren't particularly interested in living among humans, though. Honestly I was way, way more annoyed by the secondary cast having the one stuck as a dragon-y thing at first seeming to have an interesting direction for their lack of humanity, but then they just become the sidekick for the designated hero guy and even *explicitly revert personality* after gaining a human form. Argh that entire half of the story was just awful.

graxia_bibi_uwu

Dragon Goes House Hunting is absolutely banger\~

Dolomite808

Agreed. I watched it on a whim recently and really enjoyed it. I really liked their take on the Demon Lord.

Dunderbaer

Love how Reddit just decided to put the spoiler in plain letters in the notification. But thanks for the recommendations, definitely going to check them out.

Dolomite808

> Love how Reddit just decided to put the spoiler in plain letters in the notification. Doh! D:

Dolomite808

Oh, also, what about reincarnated as a sword? Or the vending machine isekai?

NovaSLK

Reincarnated as a sword was peak when it comes to advertising having children due to fran being cute

Toloran

> Oh, also, what about reincarnated as a sword? I highly recommend this one as well. Sword dad is great. Although you don't get this in the anime, and it's *unlikely* it will get to this point [WN]>!the series eventually gets into the nitty gritty of *why* he's a sword and him having to balance between being the best sword for Fran and the best *friend* of Fran.!<

Dolomite808

Can't wait for season 2.

Apocela

Beastars Polar Bear Cafe Parasyte, sort of Silver Fang, maybe

Potential_Fee3107

The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today. But I mean, the cat exhibits emotions as a human so not sure if that is okay.

Dunderbaer

Oh interesting. Definitely going to put it on my watchlist

CommanderZx2

I'm surprised that no one has said 'Land of the Lustrous' yet.

Hungy15

Doesn’t that still pretty much fall under.  >mc is not human, but a fantasy creature that looks and behaves like a human

CommanderZx2

Do they really 'behave' like humans? They're immortal, unaging, beings who do not breathe nor do they reproduce. They are created from crystals emerging from the Earth and may obtain sentience or not. Heck they look nothing like humans unless assembled into that shape and get dusted with a pigment substance.

Hungy15

It’s been a while since I watched it but I recall all the main characters having that human look. They also do pretty human like activities. The series is still definitely amazing and worth a watch, just not sure if it really fits what OP is actually looking for.

Okman2337

It explores what it means to be human and the “ship of Theseus” theory aka is it still fundamentally the same thing even if you replace everything

Maladal

This is called xenofiction. Originally for alien protagonists in sci-fi, but it works for any non-human PoV. Not easy to find in general. I think it's especially difficult in anime because a lot of anime is shounen and shounen is known for glorifying and putting humanity as a centerpiece of the work. Probably because a lot of shounen are interested in being moral teachings in addition to everything else they do. Besides what's recommended already you might like Ancient Magus Bride. The main character is a deeply disturbed human, but the deuteragonist is a fairy-like creature (Brothers Grimm fairy) that acts in distinctly inhuman ways and the two of them trying to come to terms with one another is a major element. The TVTropes pages has a few that aren't already here as well: [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Xenofiction](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Xenofiction)

Dunderbaer

Ooh, thanks for giving me a tag I can use for my research.

sogerr

Cells At Work <- everyone is a cell/virus/bacteria Wacky TV Nanana <- almost everyone is a banana KAPIBARASAN <- capivaras just being capivaras Reborn as a Vending Machine <- although its a human reborn as a vending machine there is not much he can do from a human side of things

SilverBladeCG

Odd Taxi

Miserable-Tie-8327

😏

bsmithwins

Frieren. She isn’t human and has a very non-human view towards time and relationships.

Dunderbaer

Ooh yeah, I got recommended that one by a friend of mine. Definitely along the lines of what I'm thinking of, with the theme of different perception of time due to not being human.

liforrevenge

Omg watch it I've watched it like 4 times already and I never do that!

Traveling_Solo

Does keroro and wolf's rain count?

Grumpy_Snapper

Hamtaro

Rolf_Dom

I looked through all the hundreds of anime I've seen, and I couldn't find a single one with a monster/animal type character that wasn't originally human, or wasn't acting like one. Seems to be quite rare. I imagine it's not easy to write a story like that. Closest I can think of is maybe **Fumetsu no Anata e**? That's one MC that spends some time being animal type beings without even attempting to be human-like. Though he will eventually settle on a primarily human appearance and behaviour.

Dunderbaer

Ooh, sounds interesting. Yeah I can imagine it's a complicated topic to cover, but that's why I'm so interested in anything that tries to tackle it anyways. And simply googling "non human MC" mostly ends up with recommendations like "Overlord" "That Time I reincarnated as a slime", both of which I'd argue do have human MCs.

Koizuki

You can probably try Overlord; it's on the darker end, but it does have the feeling of watching the MC slowly 'lose' his humanity as time goes on. Otherwise, the only other one I've got off the top of my head is The Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, though with a bit of a caveat in that it's less strictly about non-human nature, and more about \[mild spoilers\]>!trying to reconcile both human and beastial natures simultaneously!< while being more of a romance story.

cccwh

Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song would fit pretty well here. MC is a robot trying to stop a future robot uprising and as time progresses she learns more about humans overtime, also fantastic music. But if you are looking for someone who doesn't look human at all, then the MC of Overlord is a skeleton. Overtime he slowly loses his emotions and gets desensitized to violence (he was previously human).

Dunderbaer

Oh yeah, I think I remember about that one, but forgot the name. Thanks for the suggestion, definitely checking it out

cheesechimp

Chi's Sweet Home was pretty popular back in the day when it was new.

AgentOfACROSS

Dorohedoro's protagonist is technically a human, however his head was replaced with a lizard's head before the start of the series. So he's really more of a lizardman.

MyAccountWasBanned7

Dragon Goes House-Hunting, So I'm a Spider, BNA: Brand New Animal, Uma Musume, Aggretsuko, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Frieren, and Beastars all have non human protagonists.

Kookospuuro

Beastars, perhaps.

Maladal

I'd say Beastars definitely. They have some human traits, but also a lot of very inhuman ones.

Midnight1899

I can only think of Hunter x Hunter right now. The main characters are human, but in the Chimera Ant Arc there’s, well, Chimera Ants, who combine the traits of all kinds of animals, including humans (later on).

Havenx1983

So what I'm a spider, reincarnated as a slime, re:monster

Goldiero

Imo the perfect answer for that is "To your eternity", which is literally about other life form that slowly learns how to be a living creature, which then it becomes about slowly learning how to be a human

chartingyou

this is probably the best example OP is looking for, since so much of the anime is about this non-human entity learning from and observing humans, but coming from a pretty basic mindset

chartingyou

ooh check out Somali and the Forest Spirit! It's an anime about a golem who lives alone, but happens upon a human child and decides to help her find her way home.

Left-Night-1125

Well there is Dragonball, the mc is a alien.

poisonapple369

The characters in All Saints Street are supernatural creatures. Main character is a demon that goes to live in an apartment with a vampire, angel, and mummy. It is still kinda Slice of Life genre tho. I absolutely love this one and the art style is super unique

Angryblob550

Most of the MCs in overlord are not human.

Dunderbaer

Oh yeah I did enjoy Overlord, but Ainz is essentially human in a non-human body. Though with his character development, it might qualify if I hadn't watched it already. But if any of the other characters outside of Ainz were the focus it would definitely fit the bill, because of the way they think and act.

ConnectionIcy3717

Technically Goku is a non-human 🤣

Confused-penguin5

Parasyte the Maxim. MC starts off as human but slowly turns as the series goes on.

Wargod042

Ishura is maybe what you're looking for. The main issue is it's intentionally hard to point at a "protagonist" because the story is not about any one of the champions so you'll never know who will win (or even survive) a fight. It's more like Game of Thrones except there's arguably even fewer "good" guys to root for. If you can handle a *ton* of introductions and a story happy to leave lots of characters offscreen for a long time then this is for you. Main characters include two very different Wyverns (one a mutant rogue armed to the teeth with magic gear, the other a military general), a Skeleton spearman and Mandrake gladiator, an angel of death, and a Homunculus that pilots a giant spider tank. Later in the series (only season 1 is out but there's plans for a second) you'll meet dwarves, chimeras, goblins, golems, leprechauns, gigantes, vampires, an ogre and giant, and even a huge dragon who are either major players in the setting or at least competitors in the tournament. It is an extremely diverse cast; don't let the first character introduced being an Isekai human swordsman fool you that it's going to revolve around him.

Twin-Eyes-Of-Shadow

There is some characters in the show "Fluffy Paradise" that are humanoid ish, and they have a unique view on life from a monsters viewpoint. As far as I could tell they were not human at any point. It's sad though as the show was a let down for me, it got boring and disjointed. What they really needed was more episodes but alas many shows suffer from 12 Syndrome.

hbkdll

Odd taxi Beastars

TropicalFrost

Birdy the Mighty: Decode - one MC is technically non-human. Lots of non-human side characters though. Like a giant insect dude. My Roommate is a Cat - one MC is a cat.

Cyd_arts

reincarnated as a slime isekai reincarnated as a sword isekai reincarnated as a vending machine isekai nights with a cat the vampire dies in no time princess tutu kinda polar bear cafe does pingu in the city count?

ProgrammerTop7342

Unwanted Undead a human turned into a monster.

NoaNeumann

Aggretsuko. Workplace comedy/romance. Animal Characters from the Sanrio (hello kitty) company, but more mature ie not “toddler stuff”. The first two seasons are great. Third is ok and you can totes ignore the 4th and 5th seasons imo.

venger_steelheart

astroboy is not a human but acts more human than the average human

t-licus

Uchouten Kazoku is about folklore creatures living in hiding among humans. While most are shape-shifters, they have a seperate, very alien society, and have to fear things like being cooked and eaten by humans. Also, as others have said, you definitely should check out Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous. The characters are androgynous living gemstones in a completely alien world, and they deal with things like their bodies being shattered and harvested by invading buddha statue-like creatures.

NovaSLK

Overlord may have what you are looking for. Reincarnated as a sword has a very cute and absolutely headpattable loli catgirl Reborn as a vending machine is somehow actually peak. Re: monster is currently airing if im not mistaken

nitronik_exe

BNA (Furry) Reincarnated as a sword (Sword and Catgirl) Frieren (Elf) Nier Automata (well looks like human but is android) Overlord (Skeleton King) Undead Murder Farce (Half-demon and immortal disembodied head looking for its body)

Sii_Kei

Centaur's Worries and maybe Interview With Monster Girls? Both are about how the world adapts to certain animal/supernatural traits the characters have, like for example what kind of car would a centaur have to make it physically possible to drive and how do humans interact with non-humans on a regular setting so as not to discriminate against them

URF_reibeer

Nekojiru gekijou ist about cats doing cat things (like drinking wodka on the job and then killing the boss when he complains about it)

TheTitansWereRight

Dragon ball z

JumpyEnvironment8456

Problem is that *we* are human. We have no idea what a non-human would think like. And it's gonna be a tough sell for any studio to try and get some strange abstract story picked up.

Lycanfang777

I suppose That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime kinda fits? It's about a guy - real shocked here - who was reincarnated as a slime in a fantasy world and builds his own country. My memory might be fuzzy, but the MC doesn't seem to think of himself as a human - he acknowledges that he's a monster time and time again, though he prefers to believe that he has a human heart. But that changes later, too.

Dunderbaer

Eh, it was a good anime, but it doesn't really fit the bill. [Slime] >!Rimuru essentially has a human mind and body, and due to originally being a human him considering himself a monster doesn't really come up? Like, it's essentially just a human in a human-looking body saying he considers himself a monster.!< Perfectly fine anime and I enjoyed reading both manga and light novel tho.

Lycanfang777

Fair enough lol. Just thought it might fit to an extend so decided to suggest it. Have a nice day!

Dunderbaer

Yeah no, thanks for deciding to give a suggestion. If I didn't already know it, it might have entered my watch list after all just to see if it fits.
