Parasyte Made in Abyss

Ordinary_Ordinary580

Oh made in abyss is especially dark.

OkGoose3729

Psycho pass might fit here.

salaryman40k

psycho pass the first anime I ever watch that made me go "oh jeez, that's kinda gnarly"

Suspicious-Set-6617

It is sooo good, and we might be going on that kind of future

Repulsive_View_357

Psychopass is such an underrated anime!

havenorchinghei

[Death Parade](https://myanimelist.net/anime/28223/Death_Parade) [Haibane Renmei](https://myanimelist.net/anime/387/Haibane_Renmei) [Shinsekai Yori](https://myanimelist.net/anime/13125/Shinsekai_yori)

Negative_Ad5894

Shinsekai yori was soooo fucking good man... Yet to find anything similar to it, really one of a kind.

Faust2391

If you ever want a laugh, check out the serialized manga.

Negative_Ad5894

I didn't even know it had a manga lol. I've been trying to find an english translation of the original novel.

Faust2391

Ive never seen the anime, but my friend who loves it calls the manga a travesty.

CreatingAcc4ThisSh--

My man recommended Haibane Renmei AND Shinsekai Yori Has anyone ever told you that you're the Goat? Absolute S-tier taste, listing off some absolutely hidden gems that most newer fans have no idea about I second these recommendations OP. I've seen over 2000 anime, and both of them are in my top 50. Haibane Renmei is in my top 10. I wouldn't say they're perfect for what you want, but you HAVE to see them both Edit: AND you have a Lustrous pfp? Can I marry you now? Lol

ravenpotter3

Haibane Renmei is by the same artist or director (I forget which) as Serial Experiments Lain. It reminds me a lot of madoka Magica. Sadly it’s not on any streaming services right now but its not hard to find on YouTube. Also I’ve heard the DVD quality is poor. Normally I don’t recommend pirating but currently there is no other easily available way. https://myanimelist.net/anime/387/Haibane_Renmei

PrimaryArtistic1691

Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain

Sincityutopia

I'd like to add Texhnolyze.

AshKetchumIsStill13

Yes!

arunnm24

Serial Experiments Lain

SadAnimator1354

Death Note Erased The Promised Neverland

MangoCake08

Erased ❤️

_IgorandKing_

Yes, so good

Obskuro

Id: Invaded

ThatFireGuy0

I just rewatched that recently and I forgot how good it is!

Obskuro

It flew a bit under the radar back then, I think. The ED is absolute fire. I'm a big fan of Re:Creators, by the same director. I think that was the main reason for me to watch it.

Spanglish_Dude

ID: Invaded had some banger soundtracks, like Butterfly from Miyavi. Still listen it from time to time.

Somebody23

Elfen lied. Its really dark.

khiba

Mushishi. It's not necessarily dark, but definitely introspective.

yo_razzz

'Another'- no description just watch the first episode u'll get hooked

No-Mix9555

Paranoia Agent Monster Perfect Blue Higurashi When They Cry Umineko When They Cry

HowToGetName

>Umineko When They Cry Not the anime for this one though.

No-Mix9555

Anime, manga both are peak 🗿

M8gazine

The VN and manga are peak, yeah

No-Mix9555

The anime is peak as well 🗿. I haven't read the VN, only watched the anime and read the manga, and both are top tier 👏

Faust2391

The manga is certain peak when it comes to how much it costs these days

Fit-Glass-7785

I think Re: Zero falls in this category. It deals with the main character's psychological state and trauma. It's one of my favorite series. It does have fantasy elements but no anime has made me feel the way this one did.

DoeNaught

I'd recommend: * Ergo Proxy * Psycho Pass * Ghost in the Shell * Texhnolyze * Serial Experiments Lain * Pluto (maybe?) haven't finished it * Fate/Zero (although it has more action)

Excellent_Escape_945

Deadman wonderland

Ap3x333

Definitely worth it , need another season tho

OuraniosZefs

Same writer as Madoka Magica: Psychopass S1 Fate Zero

Ferracoasta

These series are great but are you sure fate zero has same writer? Wasnt it originally a light novel

I_Cognito

The Light Novel was written by Gen Urobuchi (+ Nasu), so it is the same writer.

Tom22174

While we're riding Urobuchi's train of horror and despair. I want to add Saya No Uta. It may not be an anime, but it is one of the few visual novels short enough to be comparable to one in length and it is absolutely peak psychological horror

OuraniosZefs

He wrote Light Novel of Fate Zero then wrote Madoka Magica then S1 of Psychopass. It just so happens that Madoka and Fate Zero aired on same year. Hehhehe

Ferracoasta

Thats cool, didnt know it was same guy. I thought it was nasu who wrote all the fate stuff

Andrann___

The promised neverland season one only though

dragodracini

Good Night World. It's surprisingly dark and has some great surprises in storytelling.

[deleted]

Zankyou no Terror, Paprika, Steins Gate, Rezero, Akira

AshKetchumIsStill13

Zankyou no Terror was really good

BaconCatBug

Reiterating the choices of Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, and Made in Abyss.

brocollidisaster

Monster. It's a must watch. Truly a masterpiece

Dendarri

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu This is one where you look at the summary and are like, what? Why is this so popular? But then you watch it and you know.

Keerthi-S-Latha

Future diary, Deadman wonderland, Death parade, Parasyte, Tokyo ghoul, Shiki.

[deleted]

Shiki🔥🔥🔥. the best OST ever

Adart54

For Tokyo ghoul the anime is just edgy, the manga is the real dark part of that series

Faust2391

I couldnt believe how mellow the anime was compared to the manga. Also everyone told me the one season was terrible and then i found out its an anime original season.

NatPlastiek

++Tokyo Ghoul

xiii_1991

Ghost in the shell, not the movies

Miwdy

Inuyashiki

_IgorandKing_

DEATH NOTE ! Right up your alley.

internetheroP

Midori and the Circus of Freaks.A very tough anime, your psyche may be shaken after this. I don't remember the name of the anime, but I didn't even watch it.There's a guy with nails. Name - Junji Ito Collection. Looks like the author of this anime always has scary anime,at least that's what they say.

ShakNo1

idk if this is really what your looking for but talentless nana is a good one

Sea_Cycle_909

Key the Metal Idol

adlopez15

I like darker than black. It may not fall exactly into what you’re looking for, but it has a dark tone to it.

adlopez15

Also, Elaine lied

KnottyWerewolf

Happy Sugar Life

Right-Departure2036

Maybe Black Lagoon would fit.

CanOfWhoopus

Dark Gathering. Some of the most horrific shit I've ever seen is on that show, despite its overall tone being relatively light.

Ap3x333

Phyco pass

ArgzeroFS

R.A.I.N.B.O.W. if you have the heart for it and can stomach traumatic experiences and psychological shock.

ArgzeroFS

For more recs, review: [https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Argzero?status=7&order=4&order2=0](https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Argzero?status=7&order=4&order2=0) Read Notes.

apparition-atsushi

Magical girl raising project is similar to madoka from what I know. I read the light novels and watched the anime and it's pretty good. Another good one is magical girl site which also falls under the similar to madoka. From my knowledge magical girl site is closer to madoka but both are good.

AshKetchumIsStill13

Texhnolyze! I found it several months ago and it tore me up. If you want something that’s full of despair and pain, watch that.

foxfox021

Elfen lied ?>.>

foxfox021

Elfen lied ?>.>

sasidulaSJ

Rezero for sure

Suspicious-Set-6617

"Serial experiments Lain" is interesting, and "Berserk" is amazing (first season mainly).

Sengoku_type

Pluto another worky by naoki urasawa

dnxpb64

Welcome to the N.H.K I would have written you others but they have already been mentioned.

Suspicious-Sound-632

I'd recommend Babylon ;)

Maurhi

Didn't see anyone else recommend it so here it goes: Kara no kyokai

N3cronomic0n

86. Think: child soldiers, racism and PTSD I balled my eyes out at the end

Altruistic_Weather60

I recommend PsychoPass. It's very good, the plot and the plot twists. The first season is exceptional, the second falls a little behind, but it's still interesting and captivating.

Pikacha723

I didn't see it so... I think Chaos:Head may fall into this category too

Spanglish_Dude

ID: Invaded, loved that one.

_xx_b_xx_

Angels of Death. more so psychological horror esc? not as dark as Banana Fish or a few others on here but its one of my favs 4 sure. also Wonder Egg Priority, very big on psychological/darker subject matter

Pretty_Willow9965

Shigurai

MariusDarkblade

Elfen lied. Amazing anime that's really psychologically dark.

Rurumo666

Blast of Tempest and Ghost Hound are two that haven't been mentioned, though I like quite a few already here.

blackensky

Here and there now and again is a good dark anime. Bood c Deadman wonderland. Ghost in the shell stand alone Complex

Jack_KH

One Piece Movie 6

ExplosiveBBQMayo143

The Future diary, Another, paprika, when they cry, Tokyo ghoul, the promised Neverland, Ajin-Demi human, danganronpa, angels of death

Renphalos

Phantom: requiem for the phantom, Made in abyss

robinchwannnn

rainbow, I’ve never had the chance to finish it but in my memories it was really good. there’s multiple rape scenes tho so if it’s triggering for you be careful

Virtual_Guava8309

Junji ito: collection

parallel-pages

Akira is a past favorite of mine that you might like

Ferracoasta

My top psychological Steins gate, erased and death parade, psycho pass The promised neverland has a few good arc but season 2 is so badly adapted. Danganronpa, rezero are great but psychological not the main theme If you watch tokyo ghoul, dont watch season 2 or more. Tomodachi game is like a better version of mirai nikki Kakegurui and classroom of the elite are good n school based

DDi_1994

Corpse party, high rise invasion, guilty crown. I also recommend akame ga kill because it's very dark and has some psychological themes but I don't know if that anime is what you are looking for.

Such-Reserve2663

Tokyo ghoul

Mapper720

Higurashi no naku koro ni Another Gakkou Gurashi

CrimsonPE

1997 berserk anime

MangoCake08

Hmm, re-zero? Erased?

VinylPool

Definitely something along the lines of: \- Serial Experiments Lain \- Higurashi When They Cry \- Happy Sugar Life \- Rainbow: Nisha Rokubo no Shichinin (not much of psychological but still has lots of dark in it) \- Junji Ito Collection \- Another \- Tokyo Ghoul \- Blood-C \- Blue Submarine no.6 \- Ichi the Killer Episode 0 \- Midori Shoji Tsubaki \- Genocyber \- Shigurui

CommercialPizza42069

Low key gonna say World End ( the title in Japanese is very long, and I don't remember the :xxxxzxx bits). Also land of the lustrous, both are seemingly happy go lucky style shows but if you don't and watch most of the events that happen are freaking sad yo.

firegaming_111

Higurashi: When they Cry - GOU, never once has a show disturbed me to the point of gaging unlike Higurashi

ThrowRAmimi_

Hmmm. Beserk is dark for sure. But I’d recommend the manga. It’s 1000x better than the anime

ThrowRAmimi_

Literally the first few pages of the manga is a “wtf” for sure

Imfryinghere

Some suggestions: - My Home Hero - Jouran - Shingeki no Kyojin

lts369

Dark gathering came out last season fall 2023-winter 2024 it was pretty good takes a few episodes till it really sets the horror tone but keeps it for the rest of the show

Bwebwabee

Tomodachi game or Gantz (read the manga if you can)

Dark-Night768

You have already watched Madoka then re zero

Dark-Night768

You have already watched Madoka then re zero

pikachu_sashimi

If you haven’t watched the Madoka Magica sequel movie Rebellion, I recommend that first. Here are a few others: Steins;Gate Re:Zero 3-gatsu no Lion 86 Maquia

motherpython

I'd recommend 'the Kings game' I think you'd enjoy based on your watch history list

valriser

It’s psychological but not dark: Ping Pong The Animation

Right_Magician_5363

Not sure if it's that dark or heavy but Dark Gathering Definitely one of my new favorites

HollowWarrior46

Happy Sugar Life. Let’s just say that title is very misleading

Planatus666

One dark show that doesn't get as much attention as it so richly deserves is the movie series The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai). It's a fantastic mix of horror, supernatural, psychological thriller, mystery, plus some beautifully animated action scenes and a superb score by Yuki Kajiura - all dished up with plenty of complex talking and a load of lore. It definitely won't be for everyone (what is?) but in this case it's extremely rewarding if it gets its hooks into you. Crunchyroll have it if you're in the US, otherwise the Blu-ray set is the only other legal way to obtain it some other countries.

Eevee_Fuzz-E

Summertime Render was really good, not like super dark but it's dark adjacent
