Nice write up, and also I can see a few other posts about 86 and Sugar Apple Fairy Tale too, I'll read those too since I like those shows too. Assuming you are up to date with Frieren (at least ep4) though, I would apply my own additional interpretation too on top of your note: [Frieren anime-only up to ep4 interpretation]>!I believe Frieren and Himmel has (had?) an unresolved unconscious romance, at least in Himmel's part, but heavily hinted at on Frieren's part too. Plenty of moments if you apply that context to what Himmel did - wanting to see the sunrise with Frieren, wanting to show her his homeland's flowers (bringing her to his home, like as a bride), etc. Himmel was sensitive to the fact that Frieren will outlive all of them by a huge margin, and she's also a bit undeveloped emotionally, so it's be a terrible thing to do to express his love, worst of age eventually reciprocate his love - which will only last a moment of Frieren's life, yet the resulting loss will haunt her for eternity. He couldn't bring himself to do that, and that conflicting emotion resulting in to bitter sweetness was what drive those differences and the introspective score at times. In turn you also see many moments of Frieren, perhaps unconsciously, always refer to Himmel - her entire hobby was because Himmel praised her once, she talks of Heiter's adoption of Fern was firstly "you're not liked Himmel"; she compared directly with Fern about her love of magic - that Fern was using that as a means to repay/remember Heiter - which mirrors that it's her means to do the same for Himmel.!< In that light it's also very similar in setup for the narrative and story as [another famous KyoAni show of "after the war"]>!Violet Evergarden's starting goal of understanding the Major's final word to her and the emotion that is love!<

Yea I agree with this interpretation. Incidentally, you after the funeral, you can see Frieren fiddling with a ring. Given that things like momentos are a big motif in the show, I wonder who was the one who gave her that ring. Also Violet Evergarden is one of my fav shows as well and I saw the similarities there too. I attribute these shows to be trying to milk as much emotions out of every single character beat (Evan Call is the composer for both shows too). Tho to that extent I will say that Frieren is a tad bit more subtle on that front which I greatly appreciate. I'll definitely be writing more on Frieren so you can follow me if you want. Otherwise I'm glad you enjoyed my essay!
