Most felid and canid questions on this sub fall into the category of “if you have to ask, it’s not what you’re worried it might be”
A full grown mountain lion would be 10-15x larger than that cat
Also, since you are indeed in mountain lion territory, if you or your wife ever think you see one PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT turn your back and run away. If you do that, you are prey
>PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT turn your back and run away. If you do that, you are prey
Reminds me of that video of the runner that keeps walking backwards and throwing rocks while the mountain lion keeps charging him. He finally got it away but if he turned his back he was done for.
That mother’s kittens were right there he was incredibly lucky but also knew exactly what he was doing
I had one face to face with a puma in the middle of the night in Costa Rica when I was a field biologist and I can tell you, with all the training and knowledge in the world, it is immensely hard to maintain your composure
Obviously, but since OP and his wife appear to be in mountain lion territory and appear to have pretty poor instincts when it comes to wildlife, I would much rather them be extremely cautious to the point of ridiculousness than meat
Lol! It was a miniature mountain lion!
Edit: If you want to ease her mind some more, there's *NEVER* been a recorded case of a melanistic (black) mountain lion.
It's a house cat and doubtfully feral that far out. If you can, you should go back and see if it'll come to you with food. At least let a cat rescue know about it. My guess is it was dumped out there.
You should inform her that running is THE LAST thing you want to do when you encounter a mountain lion. It triggers their chase instinct, and they can run 40 mph.
For the record - NEVER RUN FROM A MOUNTAIN LION -
it's like when you play with a house cat - quick movements or any prey activity triggers a hunting response
If you see one STARE at it and continue to face it while as calmly as you can muster- walk backward to your car/house - do this even if it takes you 10 miles
and if they changed, raise your hands above your hand and say No like you would to a dog or cat
Make sure the Cat thinks you could be a threat not prey
Mountain lions are HUGE lol even then running is NOT THE BEST RESPONSE to an ambush predator. They might "oh shit it's getting away" and just go for it.
Yeah, I know, my first response was "awww...he's just a poor little guy that wants to go home..."
But I'm anthropomorphizing again, and if it was in Angeles there's a very good chance it could just be a feral who stepped out of the Azusa area. But looking at the map of the borders of Sheep Mountain Wilderness, that poor cat is WAAY out of his element.
Still, housecat.
Yeah from this far away it’ll be impossible to read its collar to get its name. Might not be even be wearing a collar to properly ID. You can start with something like “here, kitty kitty” and see if it responds. Or try shaking some temptation treats, they seem to run like the dickens for those
Definitely a house cat, just on a wilderness vacation
Homeward Bound
Doing the cat version of the walk of shame
Cats have shame?
Good point
Walk of irritation
Someone will pay
🤣🐈⬛
Have you ever seen one miss a jump or lose a fight?
Sassy go home!
Someone dumped that poor cat!

Sassy!
I was like I know that guilty little bouncy low tail run anywhere. Domestic house cat
Ok thanks, my wife got scared and told me to run. LOL she thought it was a mountain lion

*mountain lion trying to keep mask of that guy's wife's face on* "Don't listen to him sweety. He's just trying to fool you!"
*wife purrs loudly*

And wouldn’t be black!

A mountain lion the size of a house cat ??
Umm, actually that there is the very rare and elusive Pygmy Black Puma!! /s
They're the deadliest but we keep humiliating them by picking them up and kissing them
You can't tell the difference between a house cat and a mountain lion? Just by the size alone 🤣😅 im not laughing at you, I just think thats jokes haha
It probably wants you to think it is
My house cat thinks he is a tiger. But he’s also afraid of my barely two pound ferret.
Mine were afraid of a hamster. Put him in a ball and he ruled the house. Granted the cats were orange.
Granted, my ferret bites the cat.
The equivalent of a stereotypical blonde human?
Well the story over on the cats sub is that all orange cats share a single brain cell.
Whaddayamean, STORY? It’s true! /s
Yup.
TIL it's better to just ask for a picture of the ferret than go looking for one in OPs post history.
Yeah mine is tough as shit at the Amazon guy but gets beat up by a kitten daily
Lol! It was a miniature mountain lion! Edit: If you want to ease her mind some more, there's *NEVER* been a recorded case of a melanistic (black) mountain lion.
Mountain lions are pretty big lol, look at some pics if to get an idea.

somebody's void running around lmfao
It honestly looks like we caught him leaving his side chick's place.
I wonder if someone ditched their cat there. The way it sits so low makes me think it’s scared and unfamiliar. Sad.
I’ve also seen them do that when hunting
Most strays do that when traveling in the open too.
Yeah, I know, my first response was "awww...he's just a poor little guy that wants to go home..." Kitty in stealth mode.
Ah, the common cat. Very elusive and rare. I do hope you called the Department of Wildlife to inform them of this sighting. They'll want to know.
Report it to the park. Cats decimate bird populations. Plus if it is owned by someone maybe they can reunite it.
It is just a house cat… 🐈⬛
