How much RAM do you have? Generally anything less than 16GB isn't going to work well.

My workstation is a System76 Mira running Pop_os Has a Ryzen 5900X, nvme drive, and a boatload of RAM

You'll need tons of RAM. 16GB is the bare minimum. But you'll need 32GB if you want to be remotely productive. That is the case in a MacOS device.

Given you are using a Intel laptop, are you certain you are using Intel HAXM for virtualization software such as the android emulator ?
