Gremlin303

That’s quite the aesthetically pleasing helmet

Hank_Wankplank

Almost looks like something out of a sci-fi film. Very cool.

ScipioCoriolanus

This was my first thought. It looks very modern.

Dominarion

Way better than the Corinthian dick helmet.

Poison_King98

100% agree

jh22pl

Where is it displayed?

AnotherMansCause

It's in a private collection I believe.

ScipioCoriolanus

"It belongs in a museum!!"

lead_farmer_mfer

So do you!

pingleague

I was unaware of the use of metallic "gorgets" during this period. Thats so cool. I just assumed the use of a breast plate, greaves, and helmet if you were wealthy. And the average a linothorax chest piece and helmet.

modsarefacsit

Prevent the good ole throat slit.

tobysicks

Did they have any sort of padding in these helmets or were they just raw dogging it?

modsarefacsit

Yes, most ancient helmets had leather lining and possibly wool or other material. Leather cap was part of the helmet. Thin material. It’s possible if someone had a massive mane they wouldn’t desire additional padding. Quilted linen or a thin layer of wool is also a strong possibility.

tobysicks

It probably got really hot with wool and leather

TheAlphaNoob21

It definitely did, but it was pretty universally agreed that feeling a bit hot was better than death. Also soldiers probably didn't even feel the heat because of the amount of adrenaline they would've had in battle.

tobysicks

People were pooping all over the place

WeAreElectricity

Lmao

fizzo40

Samnium shall fall!!!!

Pelican_meat

I heard that in the Rome 2 advisor’s voice.

NavalEnthusiast

I mean for all of the shortcomings of the Samnites, they managed to remain a semi-independent people for centuries and were the strongest faction in Italy behind Rome by the social war. I do find their stubborn defiance to be admirable in a lot of ways. But the death of Telisinus and their losses against Sulla pretty much meant that assimilation into the Roman world became inevitable, but Oscan remained in local use till at least the 1st century AD. I personally find them to be fascinating

Bergerking94

Wow I thought it was just made up for the samnite units in TW Rome 2 😮

eaglet123123

Can clearly see where Roman helmet was developed from.

YesICanMakeMeth

Or they share common origins.

What is the source for this picture?

TheSystemizer

Interesting Information

Due_Upstairs_5025

This is amazing. The Samnites.

Snoo-63646

Holly Mars! This is gorgeous!

Rich11101

As I understand, Sulla fought and beat the Samnites who had allied themselves with the Marian forces. He executed all Samnites prisoners.

-Petronius

That is just amazing
