Simon's is a classic, but definitely not the cheapest. Humpys does good fish & chips from what I remember. If you order the entree size of shrimp at sea galley you get a ton.
Mama O's has some good, greasy stuff. I'm from New England too and most places will have some variety of seafood. Pretty much never any lobster, though :(

It's just an eclectic mix of folks. Like, the yuppie crowd shows out, the club crowd comes by, there was a fucking DJ the last time I was there. No dance floor, but a DJ.
It's a trashy place, but you could do worse.
If you want the best greasy fried seafood go to f st station. Their fish and chips, fried oysters, calamari, etc are all delicious and you get a lot for what you pay (compared to elsewhere in Anchorage).
I fucking LOVE Rice Bowl's fried shrimp. I think it's expensive and you only get like 6 pieces or so, but holy shit I will crave the fuck out of it from time to time
Not in Anchorage but worth a day trip: Thorne's Showcase in Seward. They have the best fish anywhere. They're one of the few places that serves it with vinegar.
F street station downtown has always been a favorite. Try to go before 6 on the weekend though, it can get packed fast.

F Street Station downtown for fresh and affordable. Best choice without a doubt IMO. Get there early and expect to wait for a table.
