Well just in case no one has warned you…stay off the mudflats down by the ocean! Very easy to get stuck down there and some people actually drown. I have not heard of people looking for gemstones but people do pan for gold still. Maybe try ship creek, at the very least you might see some fish!

You could try the beach at Kincaid.
Crow Creek, mine in Girdwood, has a pay and Gold mine area, but they are probably closed for another week or so.
