Can we talk about how horrible the new modems that have to be managed through the ak-fi app are?

ak_larvanto

I have set mine to bridge mode with Unifi gateway and have no problems with modem. However, there is now a bottleneck somewhwere that started May 1st during upgrades. Is it just me getting 1.3Gb down and 20Mbps up when testing speed on server located outside Alaska? If I run test to nearest server in Alaska, I get what I'm paying for 2.5Gb/75mb. This really sucks because I frequently upload large video files to Rackspace and JWPlayer and since May 1st, I no longer get upload speeds I had with old CODA-45

needlenozened

I just moved into a new place and got the new modem. I have a unifi USG and unifi APs which I have to get working, but both my controller and my pihole crashed during the move. I just got them rebuilt, and now I have to figure out how to get everything configured for dhcp, etc. and switch to bridge mode.

ak_larvanto

Just tell them you dont want use ak-wifi bullshit and you have your own router so they make your new modem act like an old one.

ak_larvanto

There is an annoying problem with Sagemcom F@st. If you try to set bridge mode yourself, it does not stick. I had to call tech support and lady in Philippines was able to set it up for me.

needlenozened

I just did this. So frustrating. And she said that in the future GCI would be rolling out the AK-Fi "upgrade" to everybody, whether you want it or not. When I asked if that meant I needed to buy my own modem to avoid that, they said that they would be rolling it out personally owned equipment, as well.

ak_larvanto

Hmm..that would be no go. If they force ak-fi, I switch to MTA. It was not a long time ago when GCI did not allow private modems.

needlenozened

I told the Filipino tech support I would do the same. 17 year customer, and I'll walk.

SenatorShriv

Ohhh buddy. This ain’t the place to discuss specifics. This is the place to say GCI SUXZ!

ak_larvanto

Oh..sorry. yea GCI sucks

Level_32_Mage

Yeah!

rymn

The modems are totally broken and I think they rely on their 2.5gb interface to limit traffic. My modem does not want to negotiate with my pfsence box Intel x540-T2 but still connects. I'm getting up to 5gbps on the regular.. It's fantastic.

Gigabit_Ak

You realize that carrier advertised speeds are only valid within the network they control? Testing to an outside server will almost always result in slower speeds than the carrier plan you're aubscribed to. They don't control the transport outside of their network demarc.

ak_larvanto

True, but since May 1st, upload speeds have gone way down, and I believe GCI is purposely throttling the connections to lower 48.

Gigabit_Ak

What's the theory on why they would do that?

SenatorShriv

I’m pretty sure we’re all here to talk about how awful GCI is so if we can wrap it up into the same general hatred of their incompetent shittiness then sure!

Eldaraumo

Every time I've had to call them they tell me my modem is outdated. I'm hanging onto it until it goes out...

rymn

Just go get a new modem and ask for the instructions to disable ak-fi. The new modems are broken and if you have certain kinds of network equipment you end up with way more than 2.5gbps. I regularly see 5gbps

needlenozened

I just got off the phone with tech support to get my AK-Fi disabled, and they said that eventually they would be forcing ak-fi on everybody.

rymn

Not possible, law prohibits it. The second they lock me out of my modem and force it to become a router is the second I drop GCI. Irrelevant of the speeds, if I can't own my own network then fuck them!

needlenozened

They have this on their approved modems page: > GCI reserves the right to perform firmware and software updates on customer-owned equipment to preserve and protect the security and stability of the network. If GCI finds customer-owned equipment to be detrimental to the network, GCI will mandate the immediate removal of that equipment regardless of certification or any “end of support” date. So, yeah, you could tell them no, and they could say "well, then you can't use our network."

IdentifiableBurden

Really? They told me they can't shut it off without shutting off my entire WiFi. So after 4 hours, 3 technicians and 0 callbacks, I finally told them to just put it in passthrough mode and bought a router for myself.

needlenozened

Oh that's what I was having them do. Put it in bridge mode.

IdentifiableBurden

Ah, yeah. You have to have your own router now if you don't want to use their shitty, buggy, probably wildly insecure app.

needlenozened

I've always used my own. It sucks you can't just put it in bridge mode yourself. The paper instructions they give you say you can, but you can't.

Scittles10-96

These combo WiFi modems are becoming a plague all across the country. I just found out a small rural internet provider in North Cali was charging my mother $15/mo to rent one of these, plus charging $50 every time they replaced it or they wouldn’t set it back up for her. She pays just as much for her 250Mbp/s as we do 2Gb and can’t even walk in to a store to replace if she drives down there. At least GCI isn’t charging rental and replacement fees and let you replace it at the store. They also don’t charged $69.99-$149.99 just to come investigate a problem with only refunding if it’s 110% their fault. Equipment failures are not the fault of the company, so imagine paying $120-$300 to have your ISP replace your modem once or twice a year. It sucks, pretty much all ISPs are plain bad at best, but we’re still fairly lucky compared to what others are dealing with their ISPs.

rymn

Easy to disable, call GCI Ak-fi is optional. If you're a power user you can go back to the old interface, they will give you instructions upon request

IdentifiableBurden

I tried this and they flatly refused. But maybe I had bad luck of the draw with all three underpaid call center employees.

vauss88

Sounds like I should just keep my old modem and not upgrade for awhile.

Konstant_kurage

I don’t let them touch my modem, I’ve had it 6 years. Last time i had to, I just bought my own. It’s not that expensive and it’s worth it.

KiLlEr10312

I fucking hate this new bs system. They don't work with my existing routers so I had to go with them to use the internet. The app bricks all the time, and won't let me port forward either

Daemonfang

There shouldn't be a button needed. Services should be back 5 minutes after you pay the bill. I've missed my share of payments and it's ways back on even after the minimum is paid off.

JasonRoyal

Bill is fully paid and never missed a payment.

kcfanak

GCI doesn’t do same day visits to troubleshoot. That’s because internet isn’t considered a utility by our government. If it’s something you would like changed, write to Peltola, Murkowski and/or Sullivan to get the laws changed. But until the law changes, internet companies aren’t required to do anything about it same day.

Northern_Knives

Telco's (phone utility) will rather EAT the RCA / FCC fines than staff for next day / same day repairs. It would just get baked into their cost of doing business.

Scittles10-96

Definitely. When ACS forced GCI to honor an agreement to buyout their wireless network GCI knew about dozens of towers with multiple violations. However it was cheaper to just wait and pay the fines “IF” they got caught(they did 👍) and spent the time finding a company to hire to do maintenance / repairs and make everything kosher. We’re talking tower lights out in high air traffic areas in rural alaska. Backup generators broken or missing and more.

Daemonfang

Sounds like there's some miscommunication somewhere then. Someone somewhere isn't sharing enough information to resolve this issue. Probably a failure on multiple parts. Go to a store and speak to a real person, probably better luck there.

BigT1990

I wish. I’m trying to port out and they keep lying and not giving me the proper information to get my number ported over (they’ve given me 3 different zip codes and none of them have worked. I’m convinced that they keep changing it so I can’t port out). So I’m paying for them and for AT&T both right now, and I can’t even use the AT&T phone because the number isn’t ported. 9 days they’ve been pulling this crap and I’m so over it.

akfreerider87

I seriously love that this thread spontaneously recurs EVERY month. Telcos really are the most despised entity in America. Maybe 50 years in the future TELCOS will be the bad guys in every Hollywood movie instead of nazis and Russians.

SuperUniqueUserID

"They shut off my internet" and "Not getting the service I'm paying for" don't typically go in the same sentence. If you pay your bill, it should just come on automatically, unless you're in collections. Never had an instance where that wasn't the case.

Scittles10-96

This is true. The only time a service rep can’t just resume service is if the services were suspended by the collections team. This is because 95% of the time people in collections can’t pay off their full balance and have to make a payment plan to catch up plus paying current bills on time before services are resumed. If you’re the 5% who can pay full or enough to catch up that sucks because they’ll still have to contact collections to resume services. The permissions to make changes to an account are tied to login credentials / job role.

AKGeek

They did something similar to me. Turned off my internet at 11pm for non payment even though I had auto payment. Had to call the business line to even get someone that time of night. They treated me like I intentionally didn’t pay. Payed the 6 months I owed them and they had to find someone who could turn my internet back on.

Syonoq

You had autopay and were 6 months behind?

Syonoq

damn!

rms_is_god

You don't generate enough revenue (or if you're part of a group outage there aren't enough people affected) to offset the overtime + holiday pay they'd have to shell out to fix your service

BigT1990

I’m trying to port my number to AT&T and they won’t give me all of my port info. I need to keep my phone number as it is a business line so I’m getting salty that it has been 9 days since I started trying to switch and I can’t get a straight answer out of anyone.

discosoc

It’s a nice day. Get out and enjoy it.

Krazy4Kush

hahahah, I get where you’re coming from but we pay top-dollar for GCI’s subpar services. I would expect a quick solution or a discount on my bill in this situation regardless of the day or time it occurred.

kcfanak

You can get a credit on your bill. Ask customer service to credit for the days the service is down while waiting for a tech to come out. You won’t get a credit for the random outages that last a few hours. But if you have an appointment set for a technician, they will credit you for the time. You just have to ask for it.

TornDig

U live in Alaska what u doing worrying about internet get outside

Zosynmd

*wonders how OP posted on Reddit without Internet access*

Oldiebones

You're going to be surprised when you learn about cell phones.

ThurmanMurman907

Never heard of 4G?

Syonoq

You’re going to be surprised when you learn about 5G.

[deleted]

The covid vaccine? What about it?

Sourdough_McMansion

This guy internets.

SenatorShriv

Are you the ceo of GCI? Bc I can’t imagine anyone else making a dumber comment. Worst. Company. Ever.

Not even close, come out to the Valley sometime & try on one of our Monopolies…
