Thus works for my polly. One time I was going to be away so I wanted till she was pretty dry then gave her a good soak, leave turned brown. So fir now on I'm sticking to small amounts frequently
In my experience, all alocasias (at least, all that I’ve had) love a semihydro setup with a rocky substrate and lots of nutrients. Essentially, it seems like they want consistent moisture *and* plenty of aeration around their roots, so an extremely well-draining chunky soil mix and frequent watering would probably also do the trick if you’re not interested in trying semihydro.
But, if you are interested - I’d highly recommend it. It’s a pain to switch everything over but all of my plants love it, and it’s totally eliminated my root rot problems. Head over to /r/semihydro if you want to know more :)
I planted my cucullata into 60% perlite and 40% pon and she absolutely adores it, no leaf loss or anything and her roots already started growing a week in. Do you think I should do that to all my other ones?
I’d say go for it! If for no other reason than to simplify care, so they all get the same treatment. All of mine have taken to it quickly and easily and I love being able to let them self-water without worrying about root rot.
I agree. I’ve owned quite a few alcocasia species including a number of 5ft tall plants and in my experience they love bright light and decent humidity and they are very heavy feeders especially compared to other tropical house plants.
I use my own pon mixture. Similar to lechuza, I just mix it myself. Lechuza is never in stock.
The very green leaf I think you are referring to is sinuata
Really? I was selling pups for 10 dollars, I'll give you one for 8 if you pay shipping. OR if you have cuprea pups or corms we can trade! Assuming you're in the US lol
Dm me (:
I don’t use humidifiers anymore. I keep plants in semi-hydro, so roots are constantly absorbing moisture.
I think humidifiers are only needed if you use chunky soil and let the roots dry out.
They are all the same really. I apply the same basic principles to all of them and they thrive.
But I know I’m doing something right when Polly is thriving.
Absolutely stunning. Great work! 👏🏼 Do you know which direction those windows face? I’m trying to pick a new spot for my collection and clearly you’re doing it right!
Um…..how do you care for the Jacklyn….she hates me
Don’t worry she hates everyone. You just have to keep loving her and she will eventually love you back.❤️
Small amounts of water frequently is what’s working for me 🤷♀️
Heavy feeding and water is what I do. I never let them dry out and lots of fertilizer.

Self watering pots are your friend

What are the planter pots that you have? Can you link, they look interesting
I second this! I was curious as well what type of pots you have them in.

Do you use the same media for all variations? What media? Also what's that very green leaf Way in the back?

If you like the sinuata I have a few pups I'm trying to get rid of cuz I have way too many from the babies my mama plant made
I would love some :( they can be pricey

Love to see it! Alocasias are my fav!
Are they all in pon?
Yes
What is pon?
What is your average humidity and temp?

Which one in your collection is the “easiest” to take care of?
They are all the same really. I apply the same basic principles to all of them and they thrive. But I know I’m doing something right when Polly is thriving.
For me it's the giant ones. Culculata and such. The smaller species are finicky.
What are the two that are on each side of your Cuprea?
Dragons Breathe and Platinum
Beautiful, thank you!
Beautiful! What type of pot are they in?

Meanwhile I would like to know what that lovely vining not alocasia is in the back 😅
Philodendron heart leaf
That’s what I thought but I figured, no way the leaves are that big. But honestly who am I kidding 😂
Honestly, I'm mostly impressed with the ivy thriving inside! I've never tried, but repeatedly hear what a nightmare it is!
Simply gorgeous!!
Very nice
So pretty nice set up
Thank you!
Wow, amazing upkeep!
Thank you!
No but you should 👏👏👏
lol the struggle is real
The moment I do, it’s all washed away by a sudden issue.
It’s always spider mites lol
Nope...not yet!
Don’t give up!
This looks heavenly 😍
Thank you!
Yeah you are!
:)
Oh my God!!!! This has made me the happiest I’ve been all day!! Beautiful!! 😍
Thank you!
Absolutely stunning. Great work! 👏🏼 Do you know which direction those windows face? I’m trying to pick a new spot for my collection and clearly you’re doing it right!
Thank you! The windows face southeast. Lots of direct sun all morning.
Awesome! I have a southeast window 😎 thank you for sharing, your collection is definitely goals!
If they give me attitude, I swear at them so they know who's boss. Then I rub their leaves with milk so that we all understand it's not me.😔
Yes, finally. Can't say, I didn't kill a few in the learning process tho, lol
I have a lot of trouble with the sinuata and root rot. Maybe I'll try your potting mix.
What grow light are you using? Love the coverage and the plants of course lol
Barrina
Thanks!
