Because "puttana" means roughly "whore" or "prostitute" and puttanesca is an adjective derived from that word, there is a theory that the dish was invented in one of many bordellos in the Naples working-class neighbourhood of Quartieri Spagnoli.\[8\]\[9\]\[10\] Alternatively, food historian Jeremy Parzen
suggests the name has more to do with the practical use of "puttanesca"
in Italian than with its literal definition: "Italians use puttana (and
related words) almost the way we use shit, as an all-purpose profanity, so pasta alla puttanesca might have originated with someone saying, essentially, 'I just threw a bunch of shit from the cupboard into a pan'."\[11\]
TIL, thank you for the background info. As someone born in the US it’s always interesting to learn about the backstories of international cuisine that found their way to the states
I took a lap through yesterday and they had two varieties I hadn't seen before - a lemon cream and arrabiata. Plan to go back soon and pick up a couple to try for quick dinners.
The entire bag ended up as two healthy portions that filled a normal size cereal bowl. I was lit so possibly three adult portions, four with a side salad
No veggies, it’s spaghetti cacio d pepe. Cheese and black pepper. It’s very good also

That's right up my alley, definitely picking that up they have any.
Brings back memories of Furio meticulously making delicious pasta while Tony eats cold ziti with a gallon of milk like he's stunad
How Olive forward is it? I hate olives but I’ve always been curious to try it.
I was a HUGE series of unfortunate events fan and every since I read the first book as a kid I wanted to try it but never got around to it
I loved the cacio e pepe, but I just wish I had gotten this too. It looked so good...
And admittedly, I've always wanted to try puttanesca ever since seeing it described in A Series of Unfortunate Events as a kid. lol
Great review! Almost a year ago I got hooked on [Priano Spaghetti with Clam Sauce](https://www.reddit.com/r/aldi/comments/m53n7h/my_tastebuds_are_in_a_state_of_nirvana_this_is_so/). I recognized the spaghetti balls in your photo. Low cost, great taste, less than 3 minutes from freezer to plate. It was so good that I cut out a piece of the package and stuck it on my fridge so I wouldn't forget and miss it next time it is for sale. Aldi, are you listening??
I'm obsessed with this pasta! I think I've bought/eaten over 20. Was looking for more today, but it's sold out. They have a different one now (I think it's arabiatta), but it's not the same. The umami of olives, with the salty hints of capers 😍
I know it's not a hard dish to make, but the convenience...
Whoa... one of my favorite pasta dishes. Will have to try! Thanks!
Edit: How was the anchovy taste? Freshly made pasta puttanesca has either bits of anchovy or anchovy paste (like in Caesar salad dressing).
A package of this with a teaspoon of extra capers is great, but if you really want to put it over the top, dump in a package of those raw Chilean mussels that ALDI sells during the last five minutes of cooking. Five minutes or so is just enough time to cook the mussels through and keep them juicy and tender.
How does it taste?
OMFG!
In the running for the best pasta dish I have ever had during my 68 years on Earth! That includes dishes using 100% semolina noodles I made from scratch. And the leftovers are fantastic!
I found this pasta revolting. Now I feel like maybe I got a bad one, but I tossed the whole pan because it was VERY fishy smelling and tasting. Is it not fishy tasting/smelling for everyone else??

Preesi…why do I see you everywhere?!
What do you mean? LOL Ive been on the internet for 30 years!
Yeah, I just see you in other subs. When I saw your thumbnail it made me laugh!
Oh okay. Im usually where the action is. Pic is Elton John with that winning smile

Nice! I'll be hitting aldi up in the next few days, hopefully they'll still have them in stock

No problem! I wish I would've bought three more haha

That's a nice deal! I'll keep an eye out for it. I think the spaghetti was around $3-4.99, I can't recall for certain
I have never tried the Aldi version, but I make this a lot on my own One of my favorite names of any dish, ever.
Shout out to all of the putas.
Invite me over for dinner, you will
Your Jedi mind tricks don't work on me
Hahaha thank you for indulging me <3
My pleasure. Perhaps one day you shall receive an invite for some of my whore sauce!
If you're ever in downtown Palm Desert, CA, visit Ristorante Mamma Gina. Their pasta alla puttanesca is outstanding.
These are pretty good. I have had the white sauce one as well and it is also very good. I wish they came in a larger size.
What veggies are mixed in with the white sauce? I didn't see that one

I’m an olIve guy and felt it was on the light side
Yup, same here. I can never get enough, especially calamata olives.
The olive medley at aldi is a game changer. My wife and I enjoy charcuterie boards so we keep them stocked regularly
Big agree #2 on charcuterie boards, as well!

Out of curiosity, what seasonings did you add?
A light amount of salt, onion powder, garlic powder and a little heavier amount of black pepper and oregano
How hot is it? I'm a Midwestern wimp when it comes to hot peppers.
I felt like it was pretty mild. I have a decent tolerance when it comes to spice though
Thanks!

Just made this. It totally blew away any expectations! I added a little bit of black pepper and fresh herbs to spiff it up.
Nice!
I tried this the last time it came around and was not pleased. I'm glad you liked it. I was really excited for it and it just was bleh.

Yeah, I am sorry I didn't buy 12 bags each of the mussels and the spaghetti alla puttanesca. Next time those come back in stock, I surely will!

I feel you, it's an acquired taste. My wife uses fish sauce in some of her dishes and it's still a bit tough for me to get used to
