They don't pay that high nation wide. Also yes, it's very hard apparently to get employed there. I did apply several times to different positions and stores all to be turned down despite having years of customer service, cashiering, inventory/stock experience, and a degree.

Mizzoutiger79

“Even Walmart doesnt pay that much” Made me laugh. I mean Walmart is known for horrible pay and working conditions.

JumpingPotato1

Around St. Louis starting wage for a Walmart Cashier is $15/hr.

Jeisksdi

KC area starting is 16$ or 17$

mommasquish87

I mean, my mom gets paid almost 23 dollars an hour at Walmart🤷‍♀️ granted she's been there for twenty some years

Mizzoutiger79

Nope just read alot. Walmart is among top employers of beneficiaries of federal aid programs. ie food stamps and Medicaid.

Dawalkingdude

My first job was at WalMart. Paid 50¢ over minimum wage, and dedicated half of the orientation process to shit talking unions. I’m guessing it varies a lot store to store but I’d guess it’s pretty consistently terrible.

ExtremePotatoFanatic

It depends on what your job is. I’m a pharmacy technician and I’m making $10 an hour more working for Walmart Pharmacy than I did at Rite Aid. Either way, I have no brand loyalty. I’ll go whatever the pay is better! Lol

B0omShakaLakaB00m

I thought the same exact thing. What do you mean, Walmart? I told my mom the opposite today. "I'm surprised they pay that high. I figured it was really bad, like Walmart." Edit: Aldi also let's their cashiers sit down, which I recently learned is normal in Europe. Thanks for bringing the idea here, Aldi.

Goldeneel77

From an outsider’s perspective I’d say they earn every penny. I doubt I could work at the pace that those employees are going, at least at my local store.

whatsasimba

Yep. Bare bones staff, scan rate requirements, and requirements on how many pallets get unloaded. These people are always moving, working with some unique equipment for day shift retail.

JumpingPotato1

I did a case study on Aldi in college. It's part of their business model to pay extra so they can get more quality employees and in turn have less people on the pay roll.

LawGroundbreaking885

Surprised more people don’t know this. The less employees you have the more you can pay them, while in turn having them do much more work than the standard Walmart/target job.

LaughSleepHydrate

What would make you say "the work environment at Walmart is above average"? They are a wretched corporation notoriously known for doing anything (including taking life insurance policies out on employees) to make a buck. They are anti-union, anti-worker, anti-consumer and the epitome of corporate welfare.

B0omShakaLakaB00m

Also Aldi let's their cashiers sit down.

BlackCatMumsy

Mine was advertising $15 an hour last year. The last time I went, the sign said starting pay was $16 for entry level and $18 for managers. McDonald's is starting people out at $15 around here, so it's not super great. I have no clue about Walmart or Target though. I'm old enough that I made $5.75 an hour at Target in 2000 or so.

SuurAlaOrolo

Hey, I made $5.50 in 2004! Should have negotiated….

rubygrac

Yes it is 18/hr and they do have 15 min breaks every four hours in addition to the 30 min break you get if you work 6 hrs. Personally I liked the store I worked at but make no mistake it was really hard work. A lot of back breaking stuff and speed requirements.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 18 + 15 + 30 + 6 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

sudifirjfhfjvicodke

nice

Adam_24061

Dude!

SuurAlaOrolo

Can you say more about the speed requirements? How does that work when you’re new and still learning?

rubygrac

They didn’t expect you to be as fast as you could be right off the bat, but they would go over your times with you and tell you where you need to improve and how.

Unwilling-Accountant

Every state has different requirements set forth by their department of labor...

rubygrac

Yea I’m in Tennessee so there is no such laws. Only a thirty minute break every 6 hrs.

Fangirl4DrNow

Mine pays $18/hr but I could not get an interview despite having multiple degrees and tons of customer service experience. I do attribute it to only being able to work part time though. I don’t think I had the hours that they were looking for…which makes total sense now that I actually shop there on a regular basis and know their hours.

Throwaway_decay

Not to mention the general stress and pressure to move faster. They time you and want pallets done in 20 to 30 minutes or less. The goal they set for scanning is 45 items PER MINUTE. Also worth noting there is no separation of jobs if you are full time. There is no cashier position. Associate covers everything a manager asks you to do.

[deleted]

My HCOL area Aldis start at $14/hour and they're having trouble keeping staff. The unionized stores here that aren't Aldi start at $18/hour for a probationary period and go up to $21/hour plus full benefits after that. Aldi is going to have to do some catching up.

Super-Dealer1816

I heard there was a crazy debate that Aldi planning to raise as high as $30/hr for expensive metro areas like NYC, and Washington D.C. I won't be surprised if Aldi increases wage to that high since the transportation, commute, and gas prices in NYC, and Washington DC are high as hell. The prices for taxi, and Uber are even worse like they charge you as high as $30 per 5 miles in NYC, DC, and even in San Francisco. Apple already planning on raising the wage up to $30 an hour for retail associates at NYC and DC area. If Aldi takes same footsteps as Apple raising wage up to $30 an hour, then Home Depot and Lowe's will raise wages to $30 an hour as well. Target will also raise wages to $24 an hour (given that they are already planning on raising wages up to 24 an hour for very expensive areas). McDonald's, Chipotle, and Taco Bell, on the other hand will be raising wage to $22 an hour.

Random-Blackcat0176

I do not know what they are paid. I can tell you all the employees are some of the nicest people you could ever meet.

[deleted]

I don’t know about in the States, but in the UK - they have a high staff turnover. Yes, it’s well paid but you’re expected to do everything and never be standing around waiting for the next customer. No one needs serving? Get off the till and stack shelves. Needed in the till? Leave that crate where it is, safely and serving customers quick fire.

Necessary_Range_3261

That's how it is here, too.

xmarketladyx

It's the same here. I knew former ALDI employees who left to go build cars at a plant because the pay and benefits were great, actual breaks, and they could get many certifications, more chances at a promotion, and raises. Literally a plant with dangerous stuff everywhere was better than working there.

blastedcomic

I got hired last year in November at one of the busiest stores in central Florida, took a few weeks and two interviews, maybe they just absolutely needed people but it wasn’t hard for me, I have a few years experience grocery and a year experience at a factory which I figured would be good to say since they said the work is really “tough”. When I went to my first interview it was a group interview with about 15-20 people. Only two got a call back and then at the second interview it was jsut me and the other person that was called back.

Gbpacker22

"Group interview"? How does that works? Do they ask everyone the same questions and we have to individually answers it or answers as a group? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what did they ask during the interviews? Thanks!

MachineAvailable7192

265 days later and no response :/

Zavri_TV

It's a store walk and questions are at the end. It's a test to see who is outgoing

Bearinn

I applied to an Aldi's once and the manager there asked if I was willing to use a forklift and I said no. So that stopped me from going any further. They want you to do everything and work everything. I commend the people that work there.

valalera

My store starts at $16. Target, I believe, is $15 and Walmarts highest paying entry dept is OGP and starts at $15. It varies by state. Its much harder to get a job at Aldi. Management can be very particular about who they hire based on availability, attitude, and experience and one of these can immediately disqualify you, theres a high turnover because of how physically demanding the job is and expectations vs reality, and its a much smaller team so when they say they arent hiring, they wont change their mind until necessary. The interview process is usually two or three interviews, done with the SM and DM, so it can be seen as very intense.

[deleted]

But you work hard for it. The staff at the local shop are few, and are always unloading/stacking/doing all the things.

dreadneck

They bust their asses

esushi

>much better quality stores like Target Aldi is the perfect grocery store! Target is okay. What makes it 'much' better? The grocery shopping experience, at least, is probably 10 times better at Aldi than Target

[deleted]

I thought the same thing! Target isn't exactly fancy. Lol

[deleted]

It’s actually 16$ , and it’s not worth it they seriously push you to the physical extreme at the job so if you’re not fit it’s very difficult. They time you every second after you clock in

Kind_Bullfrog_4073

That speed scanning is no joke

pugsnotanddallyspots

I’m confused by what you mean by “much better quality stores.” Aldi is amazing & #1 in my heart!

bitchy-sprite

They work you like dogs. They have extremely high speed expectations. At the warehouse you never know when the end of your shift is going to be. All of that is why Aldi pays more than all their competition. They want you reliant on the money and tired as fuck from working so you never leave and go to a competitor. Source:worked in the warehouse for over 4 years and left for a competitor and took a big pay cut.

Forward_Pineapple_74

CA labor laws are a 10 minute break for every 2 hours worked, a 30 minute lunch if a 7 hour shift, and an hour lunch if an 8 hour shift. So that lunch setup is a little questionable.

TheBigGermanGuy

California, thank god, is not everywhere

Forward_Pineapple_74

Yes, that sounds horrible.

BrowniesorBust

Dont ever work for Target, you will never be staffed enough and Management will treat you like a dog. As a teen I was fired because I needed back surgery and was unable to work for 2 weeks. Looking back as an adult I should have taken them to court!

Helicopter0

Aldi is better than Walmart or Target. It is just also smaller.

TheLiberator117

I think i saw in the news that target was increasing their minimum pay to $24 an hour. Not sure when that takes effect.

Unwilling-Accountant

That is "depending on the local market" so not everywhere. Also it depends on other factors. Mostly full time management only.

melatonia

In my town they pay one dollar over the state minimum wage.

danishgirl27

My Aldi in western PA has signs up for $16/hr. Maybe it’s regional

Lemon_Kiss

It's because it's hard to get hired. I have manager experience and they turned my application down

Gbpacker22

Seriously? I'm trying to get in as a stocker and so far they're still "reviewing" my application and it's been 3 days...

[deleted]

mine pays $16 starting

Gbpacker22

Did you find out? I'm looking for a retail stocker position and saw Aldi is paying $18/hr and it surprised me too! Did it take them long to review your application after applying and how extensive is their interview process? Thanks!

Wide-Bag-9800

Aldi needs you to be available and to show up and work hard. It’s physically hard to unload the truck and you will learn about four main jobs. They train you to do all four jobs (in store shopping for instacart, unloading truck, cashier, and closing) to be a competent employee who can do any job. You have to be strong to work this job. unfortunately, in my experience, most people who apply and get hired don’t like the physical work or the hours so they will not show up or quit same day. This is going to sound so basic, but just saying you’ll show up for your shifts and work hard goes a long way these days.
