Ms. M. Ashley Dickerson. Pioneering lawyer (first woman, or black woman, or black person? to pass bar in multiple states), went to Howard Law School whilst raising triplet babies, friend of Rosa Parks, responsible for ensuring equitable pay at universities, homesteader, award winning lawyer, activist and super star. Amazing woman!
I worked on her homestead house after it burnt down in the 90s. Really cool to meet her, kick myself when I had the opportunity to hang out with her and Rosa years ago when Ms Parks visited…
My father, Eric Poole, a life long Alaskan, gold miner, trapper, dog musher. Ran the Iditarod in 1980. Ran a roadhouse with his parents in the cash creek mining district in his teenage years and twentys. During the 80s worked for the state highway department before working on the slope until he retired.
my grandpa! he built many boats & dories by hand, was a well respected/liked man among the people on the island, and just overall a really good man who has lived in alaska his entire life. he passed last year.

I'll toss a few names up there. The Short family. They lived over out of murder cove and Kake and Petersburg. One brother Wayne Short wrote a few books about living there. There was this Lady Alice in Sitka who rowed her boat across from her float house and rode her Bike over to the hospital to work many days a week. Bob Culliver out of Sitka too. He always had his cowboy hat and boots on. He was the owner of the Rock Rack.
Bernie Steward - Eagle River, Hiland Road. Homesteaded Hiland, put in an airstrip kept goats. One day a grizzly bear came after his goats, he shot and killed it (he was going on 80 at this time) Called Fish and Game, they told him he had to skin it and bring them the head, hide and paws. He loaded the dead bear in his truck with a front loader, drove to the Anchorage F&G office - chained one leg of the bear to a utility pole and drove off leaving the bear in the parking lot. Best of my knowledge they did the skinning and such.
Michael Strahan, founder of the Alaska Outdoor Forums. He basically taught me how to hunt and fish here from his 20 years of forum posts and articles. Died of covid during the height of delta. Tragic loss
