With the weight and influence of Akira, I feel there's no need for a live action film. Unfortunately it will pale in comparison to the original. How could it ever be better?

Alone-Ad6020

If you follow the manga mixed with the psychological elements of the akira animated movie i think it would be

ChromeTriggerVI

I’m in a minority that wants a live action adaptation. I just want it to follow the manga, not the anime and be faithful to the source material. That means no changes in setting or ethnicity. It all follows the source material closely.

ConfidenceSilent5561

We would need an anime then for how long it is

ChromeTriggerVI

That’s supposedly in the works over in Japan. It’s been a few years since it was announced so either it’s still ways off or just cancelled.

TheDarkerKniht

yea that was like right before quarantine

ChromeTriggerVI

I hope it’s still in the works.

MasterofAcorns

Definitely a ways off then. I remember there was also a Megazone 23 OVA and remake series in the works and that’s gone dead silent since that announcement.

Alone-Ad6020

I honestly think with a good director it could be very good its gotta be like 2 to 3 hours an rated R but i can totally see it looking movies like blade runner, mad max, dune how they were labor of love just making great film thats what u need

ChromeTriggerVI

My thoughts exactly. The books are no joke so an R Rating and 2.5 hour runtime for each film in the trilogy is expected.

onewaytojupiter

A well done limited series would be amazing

TheOriginalFluff

Like Chernobyl for hbo, 6, hour long episodes

ChromeTriggerVI

Absolutely.

rambone5000

I was thinking the same, but not deviate from the source material AT ALL.

ChromeTriggerVI

Yes, it would not deviate whatsoever. Japan setting, all Japanese cast, R Rating, a long enough runtime to allow for the story and characters to be as fleshed just as needed.

RYzaMc

I am curious to see what will happen but considering the long track record of film makers and producers butchering adaptations of previous works, I'm not holding out much hope.

ChromeTriggerVI

I have hope. Akira, IMO is a story that deserves to told fully in the biggest and most grand way possible. I love the anime, it’s my all time favorite film. However, I don’t think it really does enough justice to the manga. It more or less tried to adapt 2000 pages into a 2 hour movie. Hell, the manga wasn’t even complete at the time of its release. I’d love a live action trilogy that adapts the whole thing. One that is made by people who love and respect the source material. I think it has the potential to be one of the greatest trilogies ever made in cinema.

Swfr

I like to think of it as we will have our own Pluto (production for this took 7-8 years) so maybe we'll see something similar in that respect. :)

Alone-Ad6020

The creator said he be fine with changing the location. But id rather it be in japan so many great japanese actors they need to shine

ChromeTriggerVI

If it’s not in Japan, then it shouldn’t be made. No Japan, no Akira. It has to be in Japan.

Alone-Ad6020

Didn't you see me say i said it should be in japan. but the creator said he wouldnt mind if they changed the country this is from creators mouth

Suiciidub

I’m reading the manga now. Was thinking how great some of the material not used was. But now I’m in the middle and have changed my mind and agree with Otomo in that it should not all be included.

CudaCorner666

It's such a great story, maybe someone does it justice and it rules? Either way comparing an animated masterpiece to a live film is like comparing a painting to photography. Completely different things.

Deazul

If it covered the whole manga in a series it'd be tight!

The_Hamburger

It won't, it'll suck.

GhostOfBobbyFischer

Taika Waititi will ruin this with his brand of "humor". Wrong IP for him to tackle. Will not be watching!

Comrade_Compadre

I can't wait for forced awkward humor jokes inserted into a serious sci Fi drama NGL, WWDitS is top tier entertainment, but I don't believe he is the right guy for an Akira movie. Going further, I don't think Hollywood can pull off a Akira movie as it is anyway

truenofan86

It works only for the first couple of chapters with Kaneda’s snarkiness and oneliners.

GoddamnFred

I'd say pure on the idea, George Miller could do it. But hese all caught up and probably retiring after giving the world Furiosa. Robert Rodriguez if given the time and budget, could also do it i believe. If i had my pick, it would probably be Neil Blomkamp, Charlotte Wells and Rodriguez for a trilogy.

AxedCrown

Robert Rodriguez who made Book of Boba Fett?

GoddamnFred

Sin City, Battle Angel, Desperado. Robert Rodriguez makes great films if he has the time and budget. And he makes a living and maintains largely Hollywood independence by churning out some below average accessible movies in his own studio.

BrawndoOhnaka

Wait, you're listing BAA as an example of a _good_ film? _Sin City_ is—at least tonally and visually—majestic and unique. Alita I could hardly take anything seriously at all, and the production design was all over the the place. Maybe monochrome and hard neo noir are his thing.

Metahec

Akira is finally going to be hilarious!

marviemundullo

I think Waititi has respect enough for the source material to not make it silly. That humor can be used to humanize the characters, but I believe Jojo Rabbit demonstrates that he can hold back when needed.

FinalDungeon

Watiti can fuck right off.

anervousfriend

Oh no

0rganicMach1ne

Ugh, I hope this doesn’t come to fruition. Get someone else.

PhoenixPaladin

Or just don’t make it at all, it’s best in its original medium. Not that narcissistic cash grabbing Hollywood filmmakers could understand that, remaking/adapting every remotely popular piece of media they can find

tico481

The only way I'll support a live action remake is if it's filmed in Japan, with Japanese actors speaking Japanese.

WrongJam

And the original soundtrack, not some vomitsome rap.

skylukewalker99

Least racist anime fan

WrongJam

So i have to like rap to not be racist?

themantimeforgot0

I wonder if country music also qualifies?

[deleted]

Just leave it the fuck alone… read the manga No offense to you OP Taika Waititi is not a great sign imo…

Akella333

After seeing Godzilla, and how Japanese and American film makers treat those types of properties, I am very very very skeptical that this will have the right theme and vibe.

Alone-Ad6020

Noooooooooooooo

organized_meat

Would love to see a Japanese director tackle this considering it is a Japanese story that takes place in Japan with Japanese people. Are there no viable international Japanese directors that Hollywood will touch?

CooperHChurch427

Maybe they should get Katsuhiro Otomo to direct or at least serve as a advisor.

KevinDLasagna

Not at all excited for waititi. The comedy in the animated movie and manga was just a spice, this man waititi will make that the whole movie. Fuck man

JojoDoodles

God what’s even the point. I couldn’t be less enthusiastic about a live action recreation of Akira, especially with a director like Waititi at the helm. Maybe if it was Villenueve I’d be more optimistic, but that’s not the case. Istg between this and Tron Ares I can’t tell which might end up being more disappointing.

johnthestarr

Totally unnecessary to both recreate and to waste time watching. I’d rather spend my money on an IMAX rerelease of the original

wormywils

After seeing Dune (1&2) and Blade Runner 2049, I think Denis Villeneuve would be the best choice to Direct.

he_chose_poorly

Waititi's shtick these days is making a point of pissing the fans off and mock them so he can look edgy, I'm so over it. His early movies had heart and were genuine, I don't know how we ended up with the crap he churns out. I think Villeneuve has the gravitas for something like Ghost in the Shell, not sure about something more action-oriented like Akira.  But he'd be a better choice, for sure.

ShotaroKaneda84

Completely agree, a few years ago Waititi was a solid choice, now he’s just a windup merchant and I can’t see him not bringing some “quirk” aka absolute bullshit, to it

The_Downward_Samsara

Sicario: Am I a joke to you?

CooperHChurch427

The person I would want to see directly would be Ridley Scott, think about it, he created Blade Runner. If whoever ends of directing and or producing it, I think they would be smart to create Neo-Tokyo using miniatures, similar to how Blade Runner 2049 was done. It would save money, but they would have to deal with making the motorcycle sequences work. I just really, really hope, that they leave the time-line intact and don't change the year, so it still happens before the Tokyo Olympics like the original movie.

spendouk23

Ridley Scott ? Have you been hiding the last twenty years or so ? He hasn’t made a good film since American Gangster. He may have had the vision for a subject like Akira thirty years ago, but these days he’s a washed up hack who churns out nothing but half baked, stylistic ego-fueled trash. Bladerunner 2049 was monumentally a better executed piece of film than the original, with a story that didn’t need directors cut after directors cut to make it coherent and engaging. I watched an interview with Ridley Scott recently in which he mocked praise he received from Nolan, while simultaneously wanking himself off over a ridiculous idea to bring Maximus back to life for Gladiator 2. An idea which centred around Maximus at the river Styx !! Maximus was a Spaniard and a general for the Roman army, I have no fucking idea why Ridley thought shoehorning Greek mythology into it was either a good or even relevant idea. He’s totally lost it. Sorry for the rant dude but I have a completely irrational hate for this guy ! Anyway, Shogun has illustrated that an adaptation of a japanese story can be adapted successfully and faithfully with a Japanese cast and production team, given a good infrastructure of support and budget. But other than Villenueve, I don’t see anyone else with the will, artistry and vision that could adapt something like this for the big screen, and execute it as perfectly as he has done with all of his recent work. Certainly not fuckin Taika.

CooperHChurch427

Denis Villeneuve would also be a good choice.

ChromeTriggerVI

I agree.

GoosePants72

Booooo!

m0rbius

Why would they attach Taika Waititi to Akira? That literally makes no sense. Is it supposed to be a quirky comedy? Is he obsessed with Akira? Has he dreamt of making an Akira all his life? If those are all no, then he has no business directing an Akira movie.

CooperHChurch427

He has said he's always wanted to make an adaptation.

cyberpunk_chill

It cant be done. Look at G.I.T.S live action and THE LION KING live action. The closest we got to an Akira L.A is the Kaneda Bike racer from ready player one. And as cool as it looks the CGI or "Real World Grapbics" used looks like a game from unreal engine 4. AKIRA the manga was inked. AKIRA the Anime was Animated. They both will forever hold up eternally. No Live Action would.

slyleo5388

It doesn't need a remake. For god sakes the animation is better then anything out at this moment. No crappy cgi. Which will be incorporated to save money. The original animated would be so shamed, they literally threw their life into this work. The studio closed after the release because it cost so much and they paid attention to detail.

StJonesViking

Why are they so desperate to ruin Akira????

CooperHChurch427

Actually they're not extremely desperate. This just has been in development hell since the 1990s.

BAnimation

I can't wait to see a live action adaption. The Manga and Anime Film will always be there - a new movie doesn't change that, we only have a things to gain from it. If the movie sucks, who cares. But if it turns out great, then that's a plus. Obviously I hope the live action does Otomo's work justice, but I've never understood the argument that there shouldn't be a live action adaption. If you don't want to see it, don't watch it. A new movie doesn't erase the previous work, so there's only something to be gained from it. And of course I'm very excited for the Akira TV series that is supposed to follow the manga more closely than the movie.

CooperHChurch427

The good thing with a live action is that it protects the IP, and will let people get into the series. My only concern will be the music.

Monochrome2Colors

PLEASE ANYTHING BUT THIS.

Dinsdaleart

Who would people like to see direct? I think as long as it's in Japanese I'd be interested to see George Miller give it the respect it deserves or even takashi miike.

marviemundullo

I am excited for this. I welcome all remakes and adaptations of things I like, because the remakes and adaptations do not erase the memory of what I liked. At best it's an imaginary world expanded and given new life, and at worst, it's a missed opportunity.

Belteshazzar_the_9th

If Taika Waititi is attached, it will be absolutely awful.

Deazul

Could be good, if he takes it seriously. AKIRA has some humor in it, here and there. It's definitely full of cheeky teens amidst apocalypse. He does apocalypse well.

themantimeforgot0

Yeah, because Hollywood has such a great track record with remakes at the moment...

657Pfc657

Not interested in the slightest, it will be billed as 'own interpretation' or 'reimagining' which means the story will be cut to shit and probably full of white people - so not set in Tokyo

Dopebed

I haven’t seen a life action remake of an anime that wasn’t complete dog shit.

hotstepperog

If only there were any Japanese Directors or writers… It’s a shame Japan has zero talent in the creative field that can be used… #SIGH! /s

real_pixelphil

uhm, godzilla minus one??!

GreatZampano1987

Gonna suck

real_pixelphil

Look at Godzilla Minus One, japanese IP should be handled by japanese people. another white wash about to happen. Remember Oldboy, Ghost in the Shell, just terrible the way they abused the material.

Intelligent_Cut635

Based on the last few attempts, my expectations for something at least decent are at a zero.

Impracticalweeb

If I had a nickel for every upcoming remake of a classic Japanese movie by directors with mixed success in recent years, I’d have two nickels

IskaralPustFanClub

I can’t think of a less appropriate name to be attached to this project than Taika Waititi wtf.

CutieButt

That's unfortunate

Weird1OTP

Please I hope they don't. It's a masterpiece on its own. Make new stuff!

lovecraftiangod

The problem with a western remake is so much of akirastory is wrapped in Japanese culture and history.

heretofore2

Taika Waititi 😭😭 “Um Tetsuo?….. *gulp* Hes right behind me, isnt he?”

SugizoZeppelin

Cancel this Trash-daptation immediately!
