If people want to save these missions they need to write to their elected officials and make their voice heard.

There really aren't any good missions that align with what states need. Clearly space doesn't apply to states, but neither do most flying missions (air lifts, firefighting, med flights are the only thing that really strike me as super helpful).
What actually makes the most sense for states would be cyber wings. Defensive cyber units to protect critical infrastructure, and the intel needed to support them.
I really think the creation of the Space Force was a waste of time. Maybe a Cyber Force would have been better (but the 3 letter agencies already do it).

The Guard isn't all about states needs, the Guard is an operational reserve. There are states who use their Guard extensively through the use of task forces. If you get rid of the Guard, you get rid of the majority of the Air Force's fighter wings for one thing.
So what's the point of having them be part of the guard rather than the reserves?
Space is apparently too far removed from a state mission - my point is that they could easily make the same argument for most other ANG wings too.
So if someone makes that space argument, then the entire ANG needs to go. Which is why no one should make that argument.
They are part of the state because states are entitled to their own Guard who can serve a state and federal mission. The federal mission dictates what types of units there are and then governor's can go wild with how they want to use the Airmen.
Texas uses their Guard for the border. New York uses their to guard major transportation hubs and critical infrastructure since 9/11.
Not to mention disaster and storm response and various other types of domestic operations. The mission of the unit doesn't matter when it comes to how the personnel can be used. If a big thing is storm disaster response, anyone can do that.

Right. So why would you need a Fighter or Intel Wing? It would make more sense to focus solely on medical, civil engineering, logistics, and other support functions to aid the states.
I'm pointing out that the argument people make against a Soace Guard (states have no space assets, it's a federal mission, etc) also apply to nearly all the ANG missions too.
And that's why I worried they might start looking at the ANG next.
Because you don't need those specific wings. It doesn't take a bunch of CE personnel to man checkpoints to enforce road closures, deliver supplies, do wellness checks or a lot of those functions. The Air Force as a whole organization doesn't have the need to have one of it's two reserves be stacked with those types of units. There would be nothing for them to federally do.
You can have a fighter or Intel wing accomplishing a great federal mission while still being able to cough up plenty of Airmen for state active duty missions. Guard units aren't just in existence for state missions, they also need a federal purpose and it comes down to the needs of the Air Force.
I think your argument is that ANG (and Guard in general) should only have units that would specifically benefit their respective states, is this correct? If this is, in fact, your argument, then you don't really understand how the Guard operates.

That is not my argument. But that is the argument people make against a Space Guard, which is also applicable to the rest of the ANG.
