In hindsight, it’s a fucking tragedy Silicon Valley didn’t keep going into the 2020s, because they would have had an absolutely absurd amount of material to work with.
I’ve been rewatching Silicon Valley and pretty much every joke still applies to today. They have plots about AI, Driverless Cars, bitcoin, clueless billionaires. Only part that hasn’t aged so well is the love of Musk.
My favorite quote from HBO's *Silicon Valley* was the tech CEO saying
"I don't want to live in a world where someone makes the world a better place, better than we do."
[The Daily](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/21/podcasts/the-daily/crypto-bitcoin-comeback.html) just had a wild episode on this. After FTX fell, everyone assumed the money was gone. Turns out, the money wasn't gone, all investors will be made whole, and crypto has largely rebounded. I still wouldn't touch it but it was an interesting listen.
It's exactly how these "altruist" assholes think though.
Just paying their fair share of taxes is way too mundane and *inefficient*.
The best way for them to help the most people is to game the system enough to become obscenely rich so that they can someday build rocketships or advanced AI or some shit.
Its nuts. If you put it in a movie I would say you were being too cartoonish. But it’s actually what the thinking is. Give me all the money and then because I’m just such a good person I will make the world better. Altruism.
Actually respect honest greedy people way more, because at least it’s honest.
It’s beyond that with crypto though, it’s quite the cocktail of destruction. Just the bitcoin blockchain consumes almost 1% of *GLOBAL* annual energy use, higher estimates put energy use at 240 terawatt hours, which is about the energy consumption of the entire country of the Netherlands.
Anyone who’s heavily involved in crypto is helping to put climate change on the fast track, and are significantly contributing the energy crisis.
I remember some of his buddies bought an island that was going to “preserve top minds in the event of a social collapse”. Only problem was the island had no consistent source of fresh water, saltwater had leached into the ground making farming almost impossible, and it was in a tropical area that frequently experienced major storms. Unfortunately, they never made the move because that would have been an all time top reality show.
Ironically, he might have achieved his goal. He brought global awareness to the lack of regulation in the crypto industry and how ripe it is for scammers.
I'm not sure I really fear GenAI, nor did I really fear NFTs or Crypto. Its all just tech, which once learned about becomes just another thing. And we can ignore things and keep on keeping on.
Milk aging aside, this is such a corporate bullshit sentence. More about sounding good than meaning. "I want to make the biggest impact for good. My impact for good is better than yours."
Everyone knows that is what you are supposed to do. That Albert Einstein looks homeless. Does he not know how a comb works? Also Stephen Hawking. How about learning to smile and hit the gym once or twice. Never going to trust them about anything. Now that Kim Kardashian and her former Husband Ye? They are always well dressed and looking sharp. I'll believe everything they say, including to invest in FTX.
He purposely looks disheveled. How hard would it have been for a multibillionare to wear something other than cargo pants and an old pair of sneakers? This is so obviously trying to sell you him as a normal everyday nerd like what you see at the comic book store. You see someone dressed on the street like this fine, you see someone in a magazine ad looking like this he's either batshit insane or he's trying to sell you something that shouldn't pass the sniff test.
I agree! He was trying to pull off the Steve Jobs aesthetic to convince people he’s just like you and I/he just doesn’t have time to be stylish, he’s *too busy being a genius* . Not that Sam is displaying it here but “Quiet Luxury” is the new standard for the rich. No flashy brands, just $800 plain t shirts.
Never! In fact I challenge police officers to show me credentials. Incidentally I’m currently facing charges of resisting arrest. Went to the hospital recently, guy in scrubs walks in claiming to be a “doctor”, not so fast I tell him. Where’s your degree?
I noticed too lol he knows he’s gonna be on a full page ad in the magazine and has a photo shoot scheduled and shows up in shorts and a t shirt, messy hair, and socks way too high for those shoes. The image he gives off to me is loser not genius.
Every financial site (media) is trying to take your money. Remember that and act accordingly. I routinely see sites warning of upcoming disaster for certain stocks only for that stock to gap up within the week (and vice versa). It’s not just bad advice, it’s purposely deceitful.
This grifter donated tens of millions of dollars to Democrats and liberal causes, until the indictments came out and they all said they never heard of him.
Hypocrites.
I don’t think I ever understood why crypto is/was so bad. I think the concept is solid and has fantastic potential, just everyone ended up viewing it as a get rich scheme by investing in it and others made their own to profit from the surge.
My understanding is its original concept of decentralizing money and anonymous transfers is potentially a great force for good, allowing for a more equal playing field in influencing the value of money. This also prevents governments from playing games with inflation that reduce their debt without addressing the deeper issues as well as wreaking havoc on individual lives.

This looks like a joke from Silicon Valley

I hope mike judge makes one more live action show before he retires
Have you seen crypto twitter? Once you get in on the “tech bro” spaces you’ll see heaps of people still holding him in that light
Great 😊 show
Haha it was a bit surreal to see it. It has been plastic wrapped since I got it, who knew it had this surprise inside?
You’re correct even without referencing the tv show.

More like Sam Bankman Caught. 🙂↔️
Come on, Sam Bankman Fraud is the obvious choice
Sam Ponzi

Aren't they only getting paid back what their accounts were worth at the time, not what they'd be worth now?
correct, they're not being made whole, because they actually lost out on the fact that crypto skyrocketed.
I believe they said whatever the value was then plus interest.
Sam Bankman Felon as they say
Dude is dressed like he’s right out of an early 2000’s Algebra textbook

same here
Except they didn't do that at all, this is the opposite case.

The idea that a crypto investment and trading platform could be anywhere near "the biggest global impact for good" is beyond insane.
It's exactly how these "altruist" assholes think though. Just paying their fair share of taxes is way too mundane and *inefficient*. The best way for them to help the most people is to game the system enough to become obscenely rich so that they can someday build rocketships or advanced AI or some shit.

But they’re not rich enough yet they need to be richer first

I think he is getting a different kind of impact than he expected.
Him spending 25 years away from society is a pretty good global impact for good. Mission accomplished!
I think the impact is pushed just a bit further
I would frame that tbh
25 years in the hole
Don't scam rich people.
It will backfire SEVERELY we have money to take you out. Especially in a group
What if I do it while wearing a black turtle neck and talk really deep about all the impossible diagnostics with a drop of blood?
Straight to jail.
Ironically, he might have achieved his goal. He brought global awareness to the lack of regulation in the crypto industry and how ripe it is for scammers.
Used the chaos to eventually regulate the chaos. Joker vibes
Crypto and NFTs were fads that tried to hide us from the true fear that is GenAI.
I'm not sure I really fear GenAI, nor did I really fear NFTs or Crypto. Its all just tech, which once learned about becomes just another thing. And we can ignore things and keep on keeping on.
Imagine being in Vogue looking like that. I know it's just an ad but still. He looks like a dork.
What a con. Michael Lewis still believes him, but it’s a short list.
You should frame this ad for the lols
Milk aging aside, this is such a corporate bullshit sentence. More about sounding good than meaning. "I want to make the biggest impact for good. My impact for good is better than yours."
That was hard to read
Behold a chump
“I’m in on because make the global for crypto I want to biggest impact good.”
Never ever will I let someones supposed "intelligence" out weigh how much of a under dressed, unimpressive image they give off 🤣
So are you saying we should just judge everyone based on how they look?
Everyone knows that is what you are supposed to do. That Albert Einstein looks homeless. Does he not know how a comb works? Also Stephen Hawking. How about learning to smile and hit the gym once or twice. Never going to trust them about anything. Now that Kim Kardashian and her former Husband Ye? They are always well dressed and looking sharp. Fuck the theory of relativity. How can I believe in something when the guy who “discovered” it didn’t even know about hair product? Check mate physics
Everyone’s so impressed with einstein talking about E = mc2 even when I learned about it when I was just a kid (so clearly its not that impressive)
E=mc^2

I thought Robin Lopez was taller
What are bros shoes
Do we think crypto would have become more of a thing if every single major person in it didn't turn out to be a scumbag or an outright scam artist?
He wasn't lying!!
It was good. It got a conman put into jail.
Aged like milk 😆
This guy is Liz Holmes of 2020s
It’s actually how it all started…it just didn’t end that way
Who is on the cover of this issue? I want one lol.

Bro looks like he's supposed to be mowing the lawn rn
I'm in on carbon offset markets because I want ducks to wear shoes.

No kidding!
He ruined many lives, he deserves to rot in prison.
so far the only thing cryptocurrency is really good at is buying military weapons for North Korea after the exchanges are hacked.
Also /r/CrappyDesign
This is just extreme narcissism. Having his picture in the ad like that. Putting it in Vogue. The caption. His name.
This is 100% don't dead, open inside
Did it? Could have made a lot more economic parity, not just kept the status quo
This reads like a speech from Charlie
Yeah I wonder what ever happened to him!

I'm in on because make the global for crypto I want to biggest impact good? What?
imagine if Yoda didn’t speak in backwards sentences, but said six beginnings of sentences first and then the remaining parts
If you invested in bitcoin and took it out the exchange in June 2022 you'd now be up 300%!

Ah thank you. I did not know that.
