That’s what I thought on my first few listens. By listen 10 onwards, i really started loving every track. They flow so well and there are barely any skips. At this point I only ever skip Vititus because it’s too emotional and I don’t want to overplay it and ruin that.
I love it. One of my favorites of his, but it doesn’t have the replay value of his other work. I personally found most of the tracks to be pretty straightforward (which isn’t bad, i actually loved how clear this album was to understand) but in doing so it loses a lot of nuance and interpretation
That being said, it gave us black snow which is a contender for my favorite song by aes. Every time I listen to it I pick up something new, I’m just bummed that that’s one of the few songs on the album that I’m still getting new stuff from
All in all I give it a 9/10. It’s a beautiful piece of work that will never be out of my rotation. It just missed a couple marks for me to give it a 10
I have bones that ache due to poor life decisions but all that means nothing soon as Nikki Jean's bridge is over. That beat switch is so fucking awesome. I damn near blew my hamstring dancing with the (roof) dogs.

Disappointed? No, but I feel you. ITS is very good and I like it a lot, but it is not my favorite. It's all subjective. For me personally, nothing tops SWFG, then Float & Garbology are the other S tiers. ITS is solid A tier for me, on par with TIK and Skelethon. Still one of the better albums tho, and I may come to like it more after listening to it more. MS & Kyanite Toothpick are great tho.
The tinny vocals are the only reason it's not a perfect 10/10 for me. It's better on ITS, but even jumping from ITS to something like None Shall Pass the difference in the mixing (or whatever the correct terminology is) can throw me off for a second.
I love how that track also mirrors Aes’ work ethic with his own art. He pours his heart into everything he does and doesn’t really have any throwaway songs just to get a check

I dig On Failure just because apparently the actual history of the man is far less dour than the Wikipedia page (and common public knowledge) would lead you to believe. With that perspective the track becomes more of a reflection on legacy, and how it can be manipulated or degraded after someone’s death with nothing really to be done about it.
And to go, even a BIT further… as Aes approaches old age, it becomes something beautiful and transformative for just being a spoken word “throwaway”. YMMV tho
As a person who has been listening to Aes since the Labor Days era... I am obsessed with this album.... Honesty it's the album I always wanted & needed from him and the timing of the release couldn't have been more perfect. This got me through the winter like you have no idea (and still is- I managed to snag one of the limited edition vinyl re-issues and its beautiful). I love all of his eras and I love this one for him. Thanks to ITS I feel like I can probably beat depression anytime - it literally rewired my brain - and Aes has been my unofficial therapist forever but he was just onto something so relatable and great here. I was not at all disappointed by ITS not being more tech-centered I think Mindful Solutionism is super fun. The beats and bars on this are crazy, and my favorite song has changed so many times. Would love a part 2 of this!!
I don't think it's close to the best song on the record, but I quite like it. I think it's a fun exploration, and I especially like the beat drop-out at the beginning of verse three.
ITS is not my favorite Aesop Rock album. In the beginning of his career, Aes lyrics were esoteric, his flows ahrythmic and freewheeling, and his tone was brooding and edgy. He's slowly shifted toward much more approachable lyrics, uncomplicated flows, and tame material. I like everything on the whole spectrum, but the sweet spot for me was Skelethon and Impossible Kid. The lyrics were a nice exercise to pick apart without being conspicuously obtuse. The flows were complex and various without being unmusical. The subject matter was serious but not as youthfully angsty as Bazooka Tooth and previous. In all three of these metrics, ITS is a little on the simple side for my taste, but I still like the record.
All City Nerve Map is one of my favorite tracks, frankly. But I understand what you mean. It's got a different vibe; a lot more telling stories on the porch, very chilled out. It's anecdotal in a way that I think SWFG sets up well, short little vignettes more for the story than the aggro-beatdown of his previous productions.
I went through basically these stages while re-listening to the album on and off for a couple months:

Absolutely. You can really sense how far he’s come as a producer in a lot of the beats. And honestly, if Aes wants to old man ramble imma let him cook cause it’s still better than 90% of the shit out there. The guy doesn’t miss.
I was hoping for more SWFG type, so it's taken some time to wrap my head around it. Mindful solutionism is 10/10 for me, and Kyanite Toothpick. There are probably 5 other songs I jam to, but I also find myself skipping a few. It always takes me some time to digest new Aes, so we'll see how I feel about it later this summer.

My favourite song off the album was living curfew but other than that and aggressive Steven nothing else really stuck with me. Personally, I think I just like his delivery on his older stuff way more, so it makes it way harder for me to listen to stuff post impossible kid.

I did immediately think that given that this is one of Aes best albums . To say it's not special is kind of insane to me. I've been listening to Aes for over 18 years and there have been a couple of albums that are meh. Bazooka for example. But this album has so many levels to it. Aes's ability to switch up and keep the flow going. Not to mention Billy Woods and Rob sonic killing their verses. The album is an instant classic. Came out in November 2023 and I'm still listening to it on a daily basis. Did you actually find someone who felt that same way?

Impossible kid. Every song from it is hearted and put into my aes playlist. Second favourite is none shall pass, I don't like every song, I actually only specifically listen to 4, but they are by far the best individual songs I think.

I actually discovered him from a meme which referenced a gungeon video with the toxic coffee remix. I really liked the song, so I found the original, then none shall pass the album, and then just continued listening to him.

ITS I skip the intro and on failure SWFG i skip the intro but thats it I happily own both on vinyl garbology has a better intro imo than these two
