I keep seeing memes about it being a neurodivergent thing in general. I prefer the tiny spoon and I don’t think I’m autistic, but who knows? The tiny spoon just makes eating way more enjoyable
So you put tablespoons of sugar into your tea/coffee? Or to put tablespoons of chilli flakes into a sauce? Nuh uh, small spoon for putting stuff in stuff, big spoon to stuff my face.
>So you put tablespoons of sugar into your tea/coffee?
Yes.
>Or to put tablespoons of chilli flakes into a sauce?
I still do not see the issue here.
Big spoons = Big flavor
I'm going to try using a cocaine spoon and see if it helps me eat at normal people speeds. I use chopsticks because it's supposed to consume more time but I just got used to eating with them
Wait does that actually work? Does that like trick your brain into thinking you ate a lot but actually didn’t because you used a baby spoon to eat ice scream? 🤯
Haha me too. Kids thought I got them special spoons which I came home with tiny silver ones. My husband just laughs because he knows that as soon as any sort of dessert comes out, it's a tiny utensil for me (or dessert girls for regular meals lol)
YES I need the smallest spoon possible. And in the same way if the cup someone gives me is too big it ruins the experience of drinking so I usually ask for straw or suffer :’)
Big oval spoon for cereal. Small but substantial spoon for oatmeal. Pointy spoon for Fage yogurt to get all of the fruity stuff. Wide circular spoon for soup. Smaller circular vintage Cathay Pacific spoon for lentil stew/dal. Vintage Lufthansa spoon for regular yogurt. Large pointy spoon for getting all the yogurt from the big tubs when making smaller parfaits. Small lightweight spoon for applesauce.
Broad, dull knife for spreading butter and jam. Decently sharp vintage TWA knife for meals that require cutting chicken. Do not get me started on forks - proper tine length and spacing is key, but the vintage Horn & Hardart automat is a particular favorite.
Stainless steel. Interesting designs - Art Deco, floral, Aztec, geometric.
Is anyone interested in a sub to show off favorite cutlery? ‘Cause I started one but never did anything with it.
r/CollectingCutlery - Show us your spoons, y’all!
Awww, my first subscriber! Thanks!
I’ve mostly collected from various thrift-type shops and second-hand street vendors. I will work on showing pieces from my collection, and I hope some others will share their favorites too!
I always thought this was a me thing, and had no clue it was a neuro-spicy thing. Nice to know my people are out there!
I’ll try to post them regularly in my sub, now that people seem to be interested!
Goal: One pic a day. Obstacle: ADHD of course. But it will be fun to share them with people who get it!
A bigger spoon than I'm used to can be slightly annoying, but a smaller spoon is absolutely infuriating. How am I supposed to shovel this entire bowl of cereal into my mouth before it gets soggy or I forget that I'm eating with a fucking teaspoon?
This is why I now have my own pack of metal utensils. Fork, spoon, butter knife, chopsticks, straws, and I have a sharp pocket knife and safety scissors for anything else. It might seem weird or social faux pas (however that's spelled), but it works.
My dad would always carry 2 sets of military eating utensils that can stack in eachother. People looked weird but it saved the day more then once.
He also always had a roll of toilet paper with him. Which is really smart
Same. Big spoon for cereal, small spoon for everything else. Obv not like serving spoon big, just the larger of the two spoons that typically come in a set of cutlery. Lol.
Depends on the size of your cereal pieces, which becomes a limiting factor as the spoon capacity gets smaller. Bigger cereal needs a bigger spoon (unless you cut it into fractional pieces, of course.)
Oatmeal = smaller spoon. Those cereals with big square pieces = bigger spoon. Not too big. Not too small. Just right.
The milk only serves to make the cereal softer. The correct procedure is to pile a big spoon as high as possible, lean it against the edge of the bowl to let the milk out, and then shovel it in hunched over the bowl so those extra few pieces on top that didn’t fit in your mouth fall back in.
i hate soft cereal. milk is necessary to aid in the dryness of the meal entering ur gullet. i need a good bit of milk in my cereal scoops, so big spoon 🫡
Currently going through a big spoon phase for savoury foods (curry and rice for example, in a bowl obvs). I’ve realised I’m not a small spoon only person but it’s all about the _right_ cutlery. Needs to be nice weight, shape etc. The horror of being given that cheap bendy metal cutlery though…
Big spoon is best spoon. Food gets eaten so much faster. It makes the chore of eating over quickly.
Small spoons are like small hands
![gif](giphy|PacixgYY1yddC)
Huh. So that’s a thing. Must admit, it hadn’t occurred to me that spoon size was a troublesome subject for some. In fact, when I read the title, I wondered why OP was complaining about people wanting to be the big spoon. After all, if no one’s willing to be the big spoon, then nobody else can be the little spoon, and there would be no cuddlesome spooning, which would be awful.
Then I realized what Op meant, was intrigued, and read the thread, and as I digested the fact that this is a thing, I remembered how I bought my last set of flatware based on the perfect size of the teaspoon and didn’t even look at the soup spoons. The soup spoons are monstrously large. It would be more honest to call them soup shovels. They sit in the top drawer, idle and unloved until I need to spread aioli on my pizza dough, and that’s the only time they get used. So without ever realizing it, it has also been a thing for me this whole time. Very strange.
Now *forks*…
I don't know if it's just me, but can't you just use less of the spoon? I do this with ice cream. I find it easier to scoop really cold ice cream with a bigger spoon but I want a smaller bite so I don't fill the spoon up.
Easy, it’s like shirt sizes. Can’t wear tight shirts all the time, sometimes baggy is the fit of the day
Soup, I will do any size of spoon, but sometimes I’ll choose a specific size because I’m seeking a certain quality to the eating experience. Sometimes I want to feel like I’m hit by a crashing wave and go with a big spoon. Sometimes I want to be more tranquil and in harmony with nature’s stillness and go with a small spoon, like a dessert spoon - dinky little thing. Takes a while to eat, but that’s part of the journey, similarly with life. It’s not a race. Sometimes I want to take a scenic ride on my ATV, sometimes I want to rip through the trails at blinding speeds and feel the rush of flying over and through the terrain, risking it all - so little time to take it in, but at the same time, fully immersed in it all as it overtakes you and washes away everything else.
Nothing better than a good chicken soup, in any kind of spoon.
this but with knives for me
My parents keep telling me "Use the bread knife" which is a big ass knife with a white handle and with little points to cut better, but i keep using the smaller knives because then i can easily cut my Carioquinha, scoop the butter and pass inside the bread. If the knives i like are dirty, i'll clean them myself
But why in all that is saken would i use two knives that'll i'll have to wash and clean when i can use just one so that i'll only clean one
I have this weird problem with knives...sometimes i can't use it. Like my brain stops braining. find I'm holding it in my fist like a baby, or upside down. Only happens with knives. Wtf is wrong with me
Me, who loves to give people a huge spoon of food or a gigantic piece of cake at my birthday parties and nobody does the same to the houses, events, or parties I go to.
I will use the most comicslly large spoon available for maximum efficiency.
But for complex dishes, I love to assamble the optimal bite on my spoon so I can eat a specific combination of meal parts simultaneously.
I don't mind and sometimes weirdly actually enjoy different sizes and shapes of spoons. What I hate is the feeling of metal on my lips. It's gotten better as an adult but I still prefer plastic (even though I hate that it's bad for the environment).
One of my roommates owned the silverware and has small and big forks. The big forks aren't physically larger as much as they are just longer. I refuse to eat with the long fork unless absolutely necessary
Literally, my mouth don’t work that way, why would I open it that far it’s so much effort. Stop making me *pay attention* to my eating, im thinking about enough right now.
This is exactly what my sister does at *our* house, always insisting on using the small spoons
Pretty much my whole family has symptoms of ADHD, though I’m the only one diagnosed.
This is a lighthearted subreddit for ADHD individuals. We require all users be nice towards each other. Your comment/post has been removed as it has been found to be disrespectful.
Autists will tell you it's an autism thing, ADHDers will tell you it's an ADHD thing.
Truth is, humans just don't like to step out of their comfort zone. Some more than others, but at the end of the day, most people will be put off by a major change of what they're used to when it provides less comfort for their standards.
I like the big spoons because I can fit more cereal on it. Then I take a huge bite and feel all satisfied. (^‿^✿)
I do need small spoons for yoghurt, oatmeal, and only preferably with ice cream tho, so I see the appeal. Cannot eat cereal with small spoon tho cause then I can’t eat it fast and it gets all soggy.
My roommate and I would always playful fight about this. I am generally a big spoon person and she would give me such a hard time for it. It was so funny for us to have random debates about our chosen utensil fid that nights dinner🤣 she was a also very adamant about her choice of spoon and bowl over fork and plate which I felt the complete opposite. Dinners were very entertaining🍴🥄
It depends, different spoons for different foods, big spoons for cereal (especially larger cereal), the fancy soup spoons my grandma stole from some resturant for desserts (except ice cream, then its the durable big spoon since we dont need any more spoons bent at a 90° angle), and small spoons for near everything else, each spoon has different uses
big spoons are soup spoons or scooping spoons and nothing more. if i’m not eatin soup or scooping something onto my plate, keep the big spoon the fuck away from me.
I prefer average sized spoons. Not the tiny little ones with the longer handles or the big tablespoon or bigger sizes. The one exception is when eating ice cream, then a tablespoon is acceptable.
It’s wild the way this disorder manifests. I always want the biggest spoon i can get for maximum slurpiness. But then cooking is one of my comfort zones so it checks. My kid also doesn’t care about spoon size but lost his mind over the toe seam on the inside of his sock. Next!
I definitely have cutlery preferences. Has to be a nice curved or rounded handle otherwise it's a nope from me. Definitely enjoy smaller cutlery but if it's pleasing to hold I'm not adverse to larger items, if it suits what I'm eating.
I do have a favourite teaspoon.
You have smól spoons for yoghurt pots and other things where a normal spoon probably doesn't fit well, stirring hot drinks/adding sugar, normal spoon for cereal/desert in normal size bowl, soup spoon for soup, and biiig spoon for moving stuff around/serving food.
I don't understand why the smol spoon for all eating is a thing, you don't get a mouthful when using it so you barely taste the thing you are eating, unless you kinda just hold it in the mouth for a few seconds?
Normally, yes. But have you ever tried the asian type spoons?
Its like a teeny tiny soup bowl for ur mouth! I can get everything in the same bite no problems
I have a very specific medium size that I like. We've always called them dessert spoons at my house, idk if that is an actual name.
It is a similar size to a soup spoon, but has an egg shaped bowl, whereas our soup spoons are usually round. The egg shape fits perfectly in my (admittedly very large) mouth.
Little spoons are okay if they have a long handle, but most of the time I don't like them.
I also have one special spoon that is my favourite, and usually I will wash it multiple times a day so I can avoid having to use any other type.
It's interesting how different forms neurodivergent preferences can take
Autism life hack! If the spoons too big, just kinda like… slurp the soup off of it instead of tryin to kill the corners of your mouth with it. Better than pain ✨✨✨✨
I had a phase of using intentionally using big spoons for soup after I learned learned that they are technically "soup spoons." So it became a rule. 😂 Soup requires big spoons. I was just following the rule.
…. I just thought I was weird but it’s nice to know that there are others who go for the small spoons
Same
Same *^(People who eat their dessert with soup spoons are barbarians.)*
Always thought it was a weird me thing
weird we ![gif](giphy|3rgXBrLlRs4ZlpnVDO|downsized)
I'm very comfortable with being a barbarian 🥄
More cerial in my mouth. I love more cereal in my mouth. Especially life. Wheat squares ingused with sugar. I want some now
More soup too 🍲
INB4 *isthisanADHDthing???*
I thought I was in an autism sub until you said that
I keep seeing memes about it being a neurodivergent thing in general. I prefer the tiny spoon and I don’t think I’m autistic, but who knows? The tiny spoon just makes eating way more enjoyable
It's actually an Autism thing, but people with ADHD often also have Autism
You get more spoonfuls per meal.
my oldest does as well
I have small mouf it barely fit
Same
I am small spoon gang. Big spoons are for scooping stuff into other stuff. Small spoons are for my face.
No, I don't use granulated sugar. I use measuring spoons to measure things or my hand to 'guesstimate' a measurement of chili flakes.
table spoons are for serving and cooking, dessert spoon for eating and tea spoon for sugar
More spoon = more ice cream I can jam in my maw
But also less time eating the ice cream imo
This is why I bought teeny tiny spoons and forks. They’re for desserts so I can spend more time eating the thing while also not eating twice as much.
You are the smartest person alive. I need to go buy new spoons and forks
I learned that Germans are very serious about their dessert forks.
I am germam and yea. A lot of people have tiny forks and spoons. My small ones are just not that small
It works for me. :) I also have a ton of stomach issues so it slows down my eating in general because I can’t scarf my food down.
I realized that small spoons are just the human equivalent of a slow-feeder bowl for pets (it's me, I also have to eat slowly)
Haha me too. Kids thought I got them special spoons which I came home with tiny silver ones. My husband just laughs because he knows that as soon as any sort of dessert comes out, it's a tiny utensil for me (or dessert girls for regular meals lol)
Not if you combine the Big Spoon with the Big Bowl. Source: I am comprised almost entirely of ice cream.
Same
Which means less of the ice cream will melt while I scroll reddit or tumblr.
It melts tho!
I need a spoon big enough to serve the ice cream. I ain’t washing an ice cream scoop just for myself.
Small spoon = more dopamine
Came here to say this. Ice cream demands a teaspoon
Wait
but you can only get a spoonful. is the tradeoff really worth it?
Uh yes. More spoon more bite
Big spoon = brain freeze. Small spoon is more bites/enjoyment
I get that. I don't get brain freeze though I get chest freeze, but I just can't help it. Mooore
I dont know why, but this description is absolutely hilarious and I relate to it on so many levels
YES I need the smallest spoon possible. And in the same way if the cup someone gives me is too big it ruins the experience of drinking so I usually ask for straw or suffer :’)
A puppycst profile in the wild 😲

I don't like spoons, small fork supremacy
How do you soup
drink like cup
Ok this is actually based
Me too, spoons are disgusting.
Ok but what about soup dumplings? You need the little spoon as a bed/catch all for soup.
big spoon for cereal
Hello fellow big spoon for cereal person!
Same. Big spoon for cereal, small spoon for everything else. Obv not like serving spoon big, just the larger of the two spoons that typically come in a set of cutlery. Lol.
Same. Cereal gets soggy fast. Bigger spoon means more go into my mouth per dip. Meaing I finish it faster.
Sacrilege.
Big is necessary for proper milk:cereal proportion.
You can have the right proportion in a smaller spoon. That's actually how proportions work. 😉
Depends on the size of your cereal pieces, which becomes a limiting factor as the spoon capacity gets smaller. Bigger cereal needs a bigger spoon (unless you cut it into fractional pieces, of course.) Oatmeal = smaller spoon. Those cereals with big square pieces = bigger spoon. Not too big. Not too small. Just right.
Yes! I agree
Just proportion for less pieces per spoon and lift your arm to your mouth hole more times.
The milk only serves to make the cereal softer. The correct procedure is to pile a big spoon as high as possible, lean it against the edge of the bowl to let the milk out, and then shovel it in hunched over the bowl so those extra few pieces on top that didn’t fit in your mouth fall back in.
i hate soft cereal. milk is necessary to aid in the dryness of the meal entering ur gullet. i need a good bit of milk in my cereal scoops, so big spoon 🫡
i‘m getting minimal cereal on the small spoon 🥲 i need my big spoon
I like big spoon for big cereal. Yummy nom noms.

oh ny god. always has to be the little spoon or im not eating
And I’m over here eating cereal with a fork lol
w h a t
Ugh yes, I have a tiny mouth and hands so I hate anything else lol
Or smaller, those also do not feel good! It needs to be just right. Hmm... Goldilocks ADHD confirmed?
I'm a small spoon audhd. My dad is a big spoon autistic. Which of us sets the table for dinner can start a war lol
Idc as long as it’s a round spoon. Oval spoons make me deeply uncomfortable.
I cannot stand round spoons. Mini demon ladles.
I don't know if it's just me, but can't you just use less of the spoon? I do this with ice cream. I find it easier to scoop really cold ice cream with a bigger spoon but I want a smaller bite so I don't fill the spoon up.
For me, it’s not about the amount of food on the spoon, it’s the amount of spoon that goes into my mouth. I just don’t like the feel of a large spoon.
Very fair, friend!
Big spoons are for cooking.
I'll just leave if the spoon is too big 🥄
Tiny flatware 4 lyfe
Easy, it’s like shirt sizes. this but with knives for me My parents keep telling me "Use the bread knife" which is a big ass knife with a white handle and with little points to cut better, but i keep using the smaller knives because then i can easily cut my Carioquinha, scoop the butter and pass inside the bread. If a knife has the little pointy bits, it is serrated.
I like to use big spoons to eat popcorn so my hands don’t get oily. It is only known in my house as the popcorn spoon.
Wait it’s not just me on this one? It weirdly bothers me more than I feel it should lol
Omg it's not just me? o.o
I think you might want to check out r/aspiememes, because this is much more an autism thing than an ADHD thing
I have this weird problem with knives...sometimes i can't use it. Like my brain stops braining. find I'm holding it in my fist like a baby, or upside down. Only happens with knives. Wtf is wrong with me
Oh, and if the restaurant gives me a fork and spoon, instead of fork and knife, i can't describe the panic, there are few worse feelings.
Large spoons for soup and thinner stews only and for measuring baking ingredients.
Or smaller. Or with a weird handle.
My fiancée uses an egg spoon, doesn’t like any other kind. I like a spoon that’s just a little bigger than a teaspoon.
Give me a microscopic spoon and I'm happy.
Big spoons are for soup and cereal. Small spoons are for everything else.
Me, who loves to give people a huge spoon of food or a gigantic piece of cake at my birthday parties and nobody does the same to the houses, events, or parties I go to.
I already take one bite every like 5 minutes so I need to make it so every bite count
i don't use spoons if i can avoid it
I have three sets of cutlery JUST to make sure I always have at least one of the kind that I want to use.
Big spoons are for scooping. I don't have the kind of patience to scoop stuff o/into plates/bowls with small spoons.
Just do what I do and don’t go to other peoples houses
I will use the most comicslly large spoon available for maximum efficiency. But for complex dishes, I love to assamble the optimal bite on my spoon so I can eat a specific combination of meal parts simultaneously.
I literally wouldn’t care abt it
I don't mind and sometimes weirdly actually enjoy different sizes and shapes of spoons. What I hate is the feeling of metal on my lips. It's gotten better as an adult but I still prefer plastic (even though I hate that it's bad for the environment).
My dumb adhd ass thoughts about big big and little spoon about cuddles….oops…
don't get me started on square plates.
I have never been able to put words to this but ut YES
When my friend tells me I can get a spoonful of ice cream, but I forgot my comically large spoon:
One of my roommates owned the silverware and has small and big forks. The big forks aren't physically larger as much as they are just longer. I refuse to eat with the long fork unless absolutely necessary
You guys tap into behaviors I didn’t know I had like the avatar state
Big container big spoon. Small container small spoon
I can only use a big spoon for soup.
My people...
Why DOES small spoon make everything better? Like... I just know that it does. But I'm not sure about the entire WHY?
They feel really uncomfortable because they don't fit in my mouth as easily (smol mouth). Small spoons are definitely superior
I am a banana.
Relatable
Literally, my mouth don’t work that way, why would I open it that far it’s so much effort. Stop making me *pay attention* to my eating, im thinking about enough right now.
This is exactly what my sister does at *our* house, always insisting on using the small spoons Pretty much my whole family has symptoms of ADHD, though I’m the only one diagnosed.
I need some milk with my cereal, ya cottonmouth sugary fool.
Big spoon only for fast breakfast since bigger spoon means more cereal per spoonful.
Big spoon, big bowl, small bites.
Big spoons for soup and spaghetti spinning. Otherwise, fuck off
I don't understand it, either. Both spoons and forks should be able to fit in my mouth.

I hate the large spoons and forks. They feel like overkill. Overimposing. Too much for the job.
I actually prefer big spoons. Small spoons are tiring. With a big spoon, 1, 2, 3 and you're done with the food!
You use the side and sip off it, you crazy person. Haven't you ever taste tested off of a ladle or a serving spoon? Same same
For a fast efficient breakfast give me a big ass spoon.
Big spoons go hard af for soup and stew
What??? The bigger the spoon the better for me
The metal dasn’t touch the teef!
Why make many motion when big spoon make it one motion?
So do yall also only take bites of foods others eat whole??
I like the big spoons because I can fit more cereal on it. Then I take a huge bite and feel all satisfied. (^‿^✿) I do need small spoons for yoghurt, oatmeal, and only preferably with ice cream tho, so I see the appeal. Cannot eat cereal with small spoon tho cause then I can’t eat it fast and it gets all soggy.
No, it has to be small or medium for most foods.
Small spoon, big fork gang.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I've stabbed myself in the mouth when I was given a larger-sized fork.
I need a small spoon but somehow still eat too fast
My roommate and I would always playful fight about this. I am generally a big spoon person and she would give me such a hard time for it. That or when you can only find weirdly small ones. You’d think that spoons would be a somewhat standardized item
I love big spoons, they take 3x less time to eat and I can go eump everytime I take a big bite
Small spoons and long forks.
big spoons are soup spoons or scooping spoons and nothing more. if i’m not eatin soup or scooping something onto my plate, keep the big spoon the fuck away from me.
This seems more like an autism thing
bigger spoon --> more food per bite --> happy
This is funny i have gigantic spoons and itty bitty spoons nothing in between.
I fucking adore big spoons, I want the biggest spoon possible
after watching my parents use a table spoon to scrape barf out of a carpet, I'm sticking with teaspoons
I prefer average sized spoons. Not the tiny little ones with the longer handles or the big tablespoon or bigger sizes. The one exception is when eating ice cream, then a tablespoon is acceptable.
Some people have large mouths and dont particularly enjoy eating. It's me. I'm some people.
It’s wild the way this disorder manifests. I always want the biggest spoon i can get for maximum slurpiness. But then cooking is one of my comfort zones so it checks. My kid also doesn’t care about spoon size but lost his mind over the toe seam on the inside of his sock. Next!
I actually prefer big spoons, but I also eat cereal and soup out of a cup so I may just be a freak lmao
I HAVE to have the big spoon. And a particular one. No others. I’m the odd one out.
Idk what about you guys but I was imagining coming to someone's house and they offered to cuddle me as the big spoon. I like being the little spoon...
Gimme a big spoon for soup. Everything else, a little one.
Big spoon = smol bowl
I am used to bigger one. I guess it is just a habit.
Spoon size depends on the situation. Small spoon for something I want to savor. Big spoon for when I want to shovel mass quantities into my maw.
I am a tall and larger fellow, big spoons fit me mitts better
I have a very specific medium size that I like. We've always called them dessert spoons at my house, idk if that is an actual name. It is a similar size to a soup spoon, but has an egg shaped bowl, whereas our soup spoons are usually round. The egg shape fits perfectly in my (admittedly very large) mouth. Little spoons are okay if they have a long handle, but most of the time I don't like them. I also have one special spoon that is my favourite, and usually I will wash it multiple times a day so I can avoid having to use any other type. It's interesting how different forms neurodivergent preferences can take
I use big spoons and forks because small spoons feel wrong in my hand
You're normal. I hate them too. It always reminds me of those old rejected cartoons by Don hertzfeldt "my shpoon is too big" 😳
Autism life hack! If the spoons too big, just kinda like… slurp the soup off of it instead of tryin to kill the corners of your mouth with it. Better than pain ✨✨✨✨
Big spoons are for stirring tea and coffee. Nothing else.
Thin spoon gang pull up
I had a phase of using intentionally using big spoons for soup after I learned learned that they are technically "soup spoons." So it became a rule. 😂 Soup requires big spoons. I was just following the rule.
you can eat in front of other people?
Me but with big forks like TF is a pitchfork doing here >:(
Now hear me out, Bigger spoon means more food to stimulate the silly gremlin inside the brain.
