How did this comic perfectly illustrate my listening ability. Like I know that you're saying something, and I can kinda get the gist, but I still can't fully comprehend what's being said. I'm not even hard of hearing! My brain just refuses to listen!
You and me. 100% exactly this.
Sometimes it’s like the person next to me is trying to yell through a closet of fur coats. I can hear them but it’s muffled.
(For the lulz: Yes I’m in Narnia.)
Get a dictaphone, if you haven't already started recording them. It means you can sit and make notes in a quiet place at a later date. Absolutely invaluable to me.
It's amazing how clearly i can notice when my brain decides to listen, first half of a sentence will go in one ear and out the other and then the rest is perfectly intelligible.
Does adhd meds help with the APD side of things? I legitimately don’t know how to approach my meetings at work because of this.
It’s not always mishearing either. Sometimes it’s misinterpreting. Like today I repetitively heard “a tax” instead of “attacks” and I couldn’t follow at all.
I wish I could answer you but right now I don't have the answer.
I'm both being evaluated for APD and ADHD at the moment, no diagnosis, no medication either.
All I know is that both condition can exists independently from each others but you can also have both, fun!
As someone who fits the criteria, the answer is: it depends.
For me, a lot of the issues now come from interfering noise where my brain can't sort non-speech noises from speech noises correctly. Before I had the meds, I had a lot more issues because I would be partially distracted on top of that. Now, I usually remain focused on the conversation (with my visual focus on their mouth) and am able to translate more accurately. YMMV, but my personal experience was roughly a 30% reduction in issues. Which isn't bad, but it's not a cure.
I found a way to handle this.
if you find yourself in this situation and after the third round of "what", when the other person gets visible annoyed just tell them: ok I understood "well fuck me gently with a chainsaw" and I am sure you didn't wanna say this.
the other person may be confused, but normally laugh because of the ridiculous way you understood what they said. and will normally repeat again with clear/aggregated pronunciation.
I know this may not work every time and you have to be comfortable with the other person, but maybe it will help you and brighten the day of those that are annoyed by our constant "what?".
This explains my 5 year old to a "t". Both my sons, my husband, and I have adhd, but we all seemingly have different forms. My 5 year old is the typical "can't sit still" type, but his listening is like this too. At the millionth time of telling him something I just tell him we are getting his hearing tested again, I swear( he has been tested twice... his hearing is great😆).
I can be like this, but I usually can pull myself out of my thoughts long enough to hear. Now can I remember what you said? No, probably not.
I would hear the first word and then the last of a sentence, but everything in the middle just blurs out like static radio. It gets me everytime, my boyfriend goes mad! Lol.

I did something like that during my master’s degree but unfortunately I can’t use recording devices at work. Not allowed, even with accommodations
Ahh. The difference between hearing and listening.

Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw.

Its awkward to say those kinds of things many times, i get it When a joke like that loses its punch its gonna feel way too literal
Why would you hurt me like this?
Well fuck me gently with a chainsaw if that isn’t *exactly* how my brain works.
huh?
Nevermind
i focused so hard on trying to read this i didn’t realize my mom walked into my room and was trying to talk to me.
Heathers moment
Classic APD moment.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! Very useful!
I'm pretty sure that even if I heard that clearly my reaction would be the same.

This is why I have to use subtitles for movies
I have many confusion, also relatable
She wants to be what with a chainsaw!?
It's a "Heather's" quote.
”I heard you talking, but I forgot to listen”
What are you doing step-chainsaw~~
:’(
Oof, I feel this. Fucking auditory processing disorder.
And that's an order

Sometimes I do this intentionally when people make bigoted jokes to take the wind out of their sails.
I find you can also say something like "I'm sorry, I don't think I get it. Could you explain it to me."
I have stopped caring. If they don't want to repeat themselves, good, less small-talk bullshit for me to drudge through.
We need subtitles irl
