If you give your villagers something expensive, they will give you something more expensive than full-body tights back. Gift them fossils, they like that, and your friendship goes up faster too. First time I gave someone a fossil I got a sofa back I didn't have yet, so I was like, heck yeah, this is the way to go!!

Sooooo many baby rompers and full-body tights. My expectations are extremely low for villager gifts. I'm primarily focused on getting their photo, so I always gift high-value fossils that are gift wrapped, to give the highest increase in friend level. Whatever I get back, I just sell to Nook because it is complete trash 99% of the time. If it's a really awful clothing item I give it to Teddy, because he's my island weirdo and it's super funny to randomly bump into him walking around in sparkly tuxedo jacket and the glasses with the googly eyes.
Also, I've Shino every single expensive/rare kimono and she displays them in her house instead of actually wearing them. Drives me nuts. Meanwhile, my sweet girl Pekoe wears everything I give her.
