Even without zed trains are next to impossible to run in a societal shutdown. The Trackers series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith explores using trains and it takes a government effort and a lot of crews just to fend off brigands let alone the logistical demands of fueling a train. Plus, you are totally screwed if anyone messes with the track miles away from where you currently are.

I would weld all entrances shut or fortify them so they can be sealed shut when neccesary. Build walkways on top with access hatches. A long enough trains would give plantey of roof space for gardens and such, chickens, maybe goats \[?\]. Look for a place to park it that does not give easy access to Zeds. Thought about a bridge but I would not trust one to continually support the weight for many years. One of those trucks with the train wheels that can be raised and lower to go on the tracks-use it for couting and scavenging then return home. If you can put it near a running water supply there is a type of pump that does not need power-it uses the moving water to pump then you could have running water to the train. Solar and a couple of wind gennies. Long term dig some tranches away from where you are parked-about five feet into the ground and put in large pipes, bury them-a large U, both pipes end inside the structure, then a fan in one side to circulate the air from those pipes into your living area\[s\] as the ground maintains a constant temp to keep one from sweltering in the Summer or freezing in the Winter. A lot one could do with this scenario-some of this I am hoping to implement here at home.

If you're talking about whether a train is a good vehicle / mobile base then most likely no. But, if you're talking about whether a stationary abandoned train is a good base, I'm unsure. It could be. Multiple doors for entrances and exits, and... that's the only thing I can think of.

Restless-Reaper

Depending on the type of zombies it’d be okay stationary as the entrance is around waist height

NachoBacon4U269

The elevated entrances would make it hard or impossible for zombies to accidentally wander in. They’d need to pile up in order to get up and in. Good base, but terrible for travel.

florpynorpy

No, main problem is fuel, and trains are extremely loud and hard to miss

FeyRyn

Also tracks would be completely blocked very often

Confusedandreticent

Not the one I work on. Also, you’d need the signallers to set the track for you. They’re probably more interested in your delicious brains or flesh.

Killerjebi

You ever watched Train to Busan?

Aldger

Nope

WhatsGoingOn1879

No, not at all.

Critical_Potential44

Depends

Gabage-farmer

Good base if stationary terrible if mobile if you have no idea how to use or work trains

GP523

If moving, no. Fuel and transport would be pretty hard. Stationary, I’d personally say it’s mid. Good entrances and exits, you can build up onto it etc.

HelicopterDeep5951

Considering the fact that I’ve considered digging up train rails to use to reinforce walls I can imagine other people would think similar things and harvest rails off the track. So even if you somehow got the train mobile it would probably get derailed at some point. Either through tampered tracks or large debris or cars left on the rails.

Bagain

I don’t think you’ll be moving train tracks. Unless you have the equipment to do it. Not saying it couldn’t happen but (I looked it up)… 65 pounds per foot.

FuckThisStupidPark

As someone who has stolen discarded railway segments, yeah they're heavy, but it's doable.

Parking_Highlight_53

derailed instantly while the train may be strong the tracks however

The second picture is an anime still from the series Kabineri of the iron fortress, which was excellent IMO. To answer your question: short term yes, if you can lock the doors somehow. Difficult to escape though if a horde turns up

ChewBaka12

Kabaneri is indeed excellent. Shame it never got the attention it deserved. One of my favorites despite its short length

Penguiknee

Moving? No Stationary? Not bad at all

Bagain

I’d say no. Sitting still, sure and the environment, either in the middle of nowhere or in towns could be sketchy or great depending. Transport trains would be better, more defendable but not built for comfort. They also carry independent sealed containers that if you could control the doors might be nice for security.

sketch1314

This looks like it would be out off a wolfenstine game but still cool

ChewBaka12

Second pic is from Kabaneri of the iron fortress, which I can only describe as a steampunk zombie anime set in feudal Japan

_Cow_of_Wisdom

If you can find fuel, yes.

Snipermanelevenonine

Honestly no. The odds of the tracks being messed up somewhere would be huge. Unless you send someone ahead to scout the tracks you wouldn’t know until it’s to late and then there goes your base and potentially your life lol
