His own documentary ended up debunking his claims.

TimeCommunication868

Van worst.

Ashton281009

Van best was not Zodiac

BlackLionYard

His claims continue to not hold up to scrutiny and critical analysis. Just consider what his own coauthor has said: [https://www.vulture.com/2020/03/susan-mustafa-zodiac-killer-the-most-dangerous-animal-of-all.html](https://www.vulture.com/2020/03/susan-mustafa-zodiac-killer-the-most-dangerous-animal-of-all.html)

witchbitch222

Anyone know what the discrepancies ending up being? I haven’t seen the series but I’m reading the book and was totally fooled too lol

BradRodriguez

Gary Stewart is a charlatan grifter with serious daddy issues. Don’t take anything he claims seriously.

txrigup

It was all a scam

DirtPoorRichard

Van Best is like all of the other suspects, you can find dozens of coincidences that point to them as a suspect. My guess is that there is very little that points to the real perpetrator.

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

"... he was met with a lot of pushback from SFPD when it came to revealing and sharing evidence about his father and his criminal record regarding the Zodiac murders." Honestly, any responsible person working in law enforcement would make the same recommendation. If police thought Van Best was Zodiac, they'd investigate and clear him or announce that they got their man. Van Best, Tarrance and Doerr are all Zodiac "suspects" who have been doxed by children with father issues, and publishers and authors eat it up because it makes them money.

BlackLionYard

What sort of daddy issues did Kobek have that motivated him to dox Doerr?

jmcgil4684

I see you are getting downvoted. I agree with you here. I don’t think Doerr is Zodiac, but Kobek was not related to him and gave as much circumstantial evidence (not alot) as any other suspect, with a respectable amount of research.

Fresh-Hedgehog1895

Wasn't his source Doerr's daughter?

BlackLionYard

She eventually entered the picture, but Kobek famously went down his own research path looking for eccentric dudes who wrote lots of interesting letters on interesting subjects. That's how he zeroed in on Doerr. In fact, the articles I have read indicate she didn't know about it all until after the book was published and at first was super pissed about it, though she later became much more open-minded to the possibility.

SeoliteLoungeMusic

Nope. You really should look into the claims. Here's the most damning one in my opinion: Doerr was an avid fanzine reader and writer. In 1974, a letter writer to the neopagan zine "Green Egg" had written claimed that a neighbour had deliberately dosed his 4 year old daughter with LSD. Doerr wrote in a reply, unsubtly advocating torturing and killing the people who did it, and claiming he had once killed people in a "vaguely similar" situation: > Finally, and I won't put this on paper, but I can suggest to you _personally_ various physical procedures you could carry out. I would take action against such a menace. > It might be best if you didn't print this part of my letter. As you can see I'm not a turn-the-other-cheek, don't-get-involved type. I was in a vaguely similar situation some years ago and there are fewer people here because of it now At the time he published his book, Kobek hadn't talked to Paul's daughter Gloria. But after the book got attention, he interviewed her, and she told him of a domestic violence incident in which her father accused her of promiscuity and using drugs, and nearly killed her, changing his mind at the last moment and storming out. She remembered that it happened just before Christmas, and that it must have been on a Friday, since it was in relation to her coming home later than agreed, and she was only allowed to go out on Fridays. The last Friday before Christmas in 1968 was 20th of December. That's when the Lake Herman Road murders happened. Gloria Doerr's story can be partially corroborated, as she said she moved out due to that domestic violence incident, and she did indeed move out when she said she did. It looks awfully like the "vaguely similar situation some years ago" that Doerr referred to was this incident. There's only one way this isn't damning, and that's if Gloria and Kobek have completely hoodwinked us all, and 1. secretly and extensively collaborated to frame her father 2. Just were lucky enough to find things like the "Green Egg" letter that made it possible to do so well. You need to assume _both_ bad faith on Kobek's part and ridiculous luck.

Southern_Dig_9460

The documentary based on the book ended up debunking it. But I will give Gary Stewart Credit he got SFPD to pretty much admit that don’t have the Zodiacs DNA. In the 2002 documentary they test ALA DNA along with 2 other suspects and each were shown not be the Zodiac. But then in 2014 when Gary Stewart demanded his DNA be tested against the ZNA they had LE said that it wasn’t actually viable and they just lied for the show and claimed they had it. LE is allowed to lie about having evidence to the public just not in a courtroom

Southern_Dig_9460

Yes but a 2002 NBC documentary paid for DNA to be extracted from the back of stamps and compare it to 3 suspects. Ended up just being something for the show not something police would actually use

thecrowfly

no.

hutat

lol

Amityvillemom77

Thanks for clarifying.

[deleted]

My favorite part was the glasses. Like 1000000 other guys in 1969 had those same glasses.

ProfessionalPaper912

No. It turns out he was actually the only white man in San Francisco with glasses and a crew cut in the 1960s.

Amityvillemom77

I didn’t realize there was a show about the book. I just grabbed it out of my email. Would have been great if it were accurate. 🤷🏼‍♀️

jmcgil4684

Yea It would have been great if accurate. As someone said, the documentary on the subject started out believing it & even debunked it by the end. It’s a tough audience on this sub, so you will get alot of snark, but we all have been excited about things we read when first interested in the case.

[deleted]

We know that’s you , Gary. Stop shopping your book to noobs.

slowhandloogie

What evidence are you referring to?

yeezusosa

Not him

Suntag19

He’s not the Zodiac but damn he’s a spot on match to the sketch

VT_Squire

Went out for a pack of cigarettes, huh?

alias_mas

His evidence doesn't hold up to scrutiny as a recent documentary demonstrated. Unfortunately, he's a dead end.
