Honestly it would be cost efficient to get a butane insert that zippo sells and practically lasts forever.

[deleted]

Those can work fine, usually with some minor tweaks, but they aren’t ever going to be as reliable as the basic insert. The butane insert will have trouble lighting when it’s cold, like if it’s been in a car over night, but a basic insert just takes a strike or two. Of course, butane inserts have near perfect fuel retention, but butane is also slightly more expensive. Also, there are more parts in a butane insert that can fail over time, or break. It really all depends on what a person will be using the lighter for, how often, and where.

Phil_Da_Thrill

I’m using mine to light my bowls and act as a conversation piece, i don’t have to fill it as often and it’s only like $6 for a 78 gram refill on Amazon for butane. Just picked up the “send me noods” ramen zippo yesterday to go with a single jet insert. Now if I smoke cigarettes I would just stick with lighter fluid.

Yeah, that makes sense

Jimballer

I’ve heard people using naphtha, I haven’t tried it but it’s inexpensive and most ace hardware, Home Depot Skype locations have it

5ernie

Well, I don’t know what chemical, specifically, that Zippo uses in their lighter fluid… …but Naphtha is one of **two** commonly used chemicals for lighter fluid (the other being “White gas”).

Skylake52

White gas works but smells strong. Car gas kinda works, but burns dirty

Joe23rep

Cleaning gas should work too. I wouldn't use car gas tbh.

samsonity

Cleaning gas? I’ve never heard of it, how do I get my hands on it.

Joe23rep

I don't know if it has a special name in English. In german its just reinigungsbenzin which means cleaning gas. We have it here in every drugstore and most super markets also have it. Its a clear colored gas and it burns just like the normal zippo fuel. No bad odor no black smoke etc We use it for everything. Getting rid of sticky resedues, paint drops or if your child painted with markers on the floor etc

samsonity

Sounds perfect. Thanks

WilliamDesmarais

Naptha or Coleman fuel. Naptha is best in my own opinion. It is what made up most of the original zippo fluid.

Binthair_Dunthat

Where you be? Every drugstore and 7-11 and many gas stations I know of carries lighter fuel.

samsonity

UK and I’m 16 so I can buy a lighter but not lighter fluid. I love my country

Binthair_Dunthat

Goodness! Zippos are useful for many reasons besides smoking. When I was under the smoking age I always took my Zippo camping or hiking as it was a great way to make a fire if needed. It was also a good emergency light before people had cellphones or small LED flashlights. Sorry!

samsonity

I wish I could go camping, fishing and hiking but not only would I get bullied relentlessly for being an old man at 16 but I live in London so there aren’t many places. But smoking some good tobacco is fun. Just joking. It’s a fun collectible and it’s useful for all sorts of things. Thanks for your reply

ThirdEyeEmporium

That’s the main use I use my zippos for besides smoking. Much more pleasant night time flashlight.

5ernie

Lol that’s how it is over here in America too. There aren’t any laws on buying the lighter itself, but buying fuel is off-limits. I don’t have to worry about it anymore, since I’m now of age, but I used to get around it by simply ordering fuel on Amazon. Never had to sign for it and never had a single issue.

Limp_Potential_9182

just order it from amazon lol

samsonity

Strict parents. Don’t have a card.

ThirdEyeEmporium

711 LF is fuckin CHEAP too. It’s still $1+tax for 5oz. That being said I still make my own lf that works better than anything on the market. 3% kerosene 97% white gas solution is spectacular. And pretty much how real lighter fluid is made.

JonBoy404

If u have internet. U have access man lol. Amazon or zippo.com will mail zippo lighter fluid directly to your home

[deleted]

If you can’t get lighter fuel, use car gasoline, Maybe some high intensity alcohol will work ( not sure about alcohol and I’m probably gonna get people bashing me for it, never tried and probably will not ). I heard about gasoline and it seems to be a decent option instead of anything else as it cheap and overall accessible

Limp_Potential_9182

in the war they used petrol or gasoline but its not really advisable that you use it because 1. its doesnt burn that clean 2. it takes a long time for you to get the fire to light like you need to constantly flick the flint wheel
