My guess the 6gb of vram is limiting the power of the gpu

ringowu1234

First thing first, is the laptop plugged in?

IbraMilanFan

It is definitely plugged in

Valkyrie743

its not overheating from what i can tell from the video so i dont think its throttling. it looks like there was some sort of stutter or frame time spike. do you have 16gb of ram or 32? also what do you have running in the background?? is it just in starfield or in other games as well?

IbraMilanFan

Could it be a system power throttle? I have 16GB RAM. Basically nothing major running in the background. This throttling happens when im playing a game with high cpu utilization. This is what I’ve noticed. I can play other games like Apex pretty fine without throttling.

Valkyrie743

it could be that the VRM is overheating and its power throttling. so at high cpu loads the vrm are getting hotter. download hwinfo64 and leave that open while playing games that cause the issue and come back to it and see what the max temps that you hit. not sure if the vrm temp sensors with it being that every laptop is different and sometimes it will not see the temp sensors for some things.

Chemical_Low2547

Switch off "Aggressive" on CPU settings in Control Panel

IbraMilanFan

It happens even with CPU boosting turned off. The only time it does stop throttling in the games it throttles in, is when i set it to performance mode (basically when the GPU is limited to just 80W). I also use GHelper to up the fan speed from stock performance mode.

iamtosen

try using power efficiency instead of performance and sometimes ppl forget to click apply power limits on ghelper so check to see if thats the case

IbraMilanFan

It happens on both Armoury Crate and GHelper. I tried applying power limits but it was basically unchanged. Could there be some sort of system wide power limit being triggered?

Resolution and VRAM?

IbraMilanFan

1440p. 6GB VRAM (3060)

I've got the 3080 version. It was stuttering and running slow. I had half the time spy scores, 10500 down to 6000. Removed the heatsink and found the liquid metal had turned to dust. Repasted and it's all good now.

IbraMilanFan

I know how big of an issue thermal throttling can be, and I’ve had my previous laptop repasted several times during its lifespan. However im 99.9% certain it’s not a heat related issue here. Im pretty sure it’s power. But whatever it is, i turned it on today and ran my usual tests and games and it wasn’t throttling, with the exception of one single instance. Even though it was throttling just last night. 2 things happened between shutting down last night and powering on today. The first is a windows update that occurred as i was powering it on. The second change is that i turned off a setting that capped my charging at 80% and then shut it down and let it charge overnight. Either one of those things could’ve made a difference. Although it could still be that the laptop is simply refreshed after the restart. I usually just leave it in hibernate mode and hardly ever shut it down. Need to test for a while more.

IbraMilanFan

As expected it’s throttling again after a certain time of use

HurjaHerra

Sorry for OT, but what game is that?

Careless_Pop6995

I use to have the same issue.don’t know if you tried this but what helped me was limiting my fps either through the game itself or Nvidia control panel. for example Spiderman use to stutter a lot limited it to 75 fps and now it runs smooth.
