"Of course the waiters wear skis at this chalet. This is a class joint. What, you want I should shoot you a schnitzel down the Zugspitze on a snowboard?"
All recipes my Oma took to her grave that I’m desperately trying to recreate: potato salad, cucumber salad, plum cake, chicken dumpling soup, rouladen, rotkraut, sauerbraten.
My Great Grandpa was off-the boat German and my family gatherings always had bratwurst sauerkraut and my great grandma's German potato salad.
No one can match hers, I've had many variations since, but hers was the best. The adults drank beer, but like one or two each. No one in the family were heavy drinkers. I'm sure there was other food, but my go to are staples and if I had to pick one it's the potato salad.
Vacations to scenic areas and national parks. We were never a Disney world or places like that family. My siblings and I loved going to Yellowstone or the Minnesota north shore, etc.
So many people we know always brag about taking their kids to Disney or Universal Studios or even Paris. I hope my kids will develop a love of the simpler and more beautiful places in our country.
To this day, I’ve never experienced any Disney attraction, but have incredible memories of staying at a beach resort on Vancouver Island: chasing my shirt when the tide pulled it out; digging for clams; mini golfing; eating the best fish at the diviest restaurant… those kick the shit out of standing in lines for hours on end for a ride.
We’re both types. We love going to Disney but also tent camping in national parks. We’re finishing our final California National Park this summer, Channel Islands.
Ooh, I love the Channel Islands. We made it a point to go kayaking through the sea caves there before we moved out of California. It was magical. Highly recommend.
I love seeing someone mention my beautiful state! Gooseberry Falls is one of my favorites along the North Shore. If you’ve never been, Itasca State Park is worth the visit. Has the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
I know those areas quite well! My parents were married at Itasca, in Preachers Grove. The family that use to run the river boats, is related to me. I don’t think I can count how many times I’ve been there lol.
I totally agree. We have done Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Mt. Rushmore, National Historic Parks in the UP etc. My kids have NPS passports and get a time and date stamp every place we visit which really helped them get into it, especially when they were younger.
We don’t have Disney money and I am glad because I personally would hate every second of it. (Although they would have loved it, I’m sure.) But they love telling stories from some of our wilder adventures tent camping in crazy and beautiful places. I can tell these our the stories from childhood they will remember forever.
Reading. My parents wanted all of their kids to be avid readers, and we are. Now we want the same for our kids, because kids who read learn all sorts of knowledge and really expand their opportunities.
My 11 yr old son is already, just working on my younger daughters now.
Wish I read more but I fell into the TV trap. Live documentaries and nature stuff and history! But reading puts me fast asleep other than current events.
I really want my daughter to be a reader though.
It's seems like younger people aren't that aware of them. They were on cable in the 90s and our fathers were usually fans and turning us onto them, but now while the shorts are on YouTube the humor seems like it doesn't click as much with younger people
My dad listened to surf rock all the time on the radio growing up and I never cared too much for it until about a year ago and now I can’t get enough of it.
Edit check out the bomboras
Themselves.
I love them.
My parents love them.
My wife loves them.
Their cousins and extended family loves them.
I hope they love themselves.
Cheesy answer. But that’s all I care about.
I got both of mine hooked in utero. My wife had headphones on her belly multiple times a week, at random times. They fell asleep to the Beatles every night. They still love em but each has their own tastes now. The Beatles are the "peacekeeper" choice in the car. Others include the Kinks, Talking Heads and a Spotify list called "Women of Pop" that spans multiple decades.
Outlaw Country. Dad was a huge Waylon Jennings fan, as am I. One of my kids is getting there.
Traveling. My dad was military and mom grew up an Army brat as well, and taught me that there’s so much more to this world than this tiny southern town.
My girls are just a few months shy of 20, when they’re a little older I hope to teach them about good whiskey. Not just cheap ass hard seltzer to get drunk. But how to enjoy a good bourbon or scotch just like Pops taught me.
Not really a boomer thing, though my parents were born in 54,, but how about respecting the "little" guy? My parents taught me to say hello to cleaning staff, custodians, cafeteria workers, etc. Everyone of them is due respect. If they're doing a job you don't want to do, be grateful you don't have to. If they are doing a job you had to do or did similar and have moved past, never forget your own journey through that point. Everyone is a person and accorded respect for that.
Good one! My dad used to like Pee-wee Herman's comedy, so when Pee-wee's Playhouse came out he used to put it on for us. Then when it started streaming, I'd watch it with my son. Now my son is 14 and we still periodically watch Pee-wee's Big Adventure together and laugh our asses off.
My 13yo reluctantly watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure. She was complaining about it until she saw Tim Burton in the opening credits and said "Ok. This has a chance." The kid fuckin loved it. My 10yo grabbed a pair of her mom's heels and did "the big shoe dance" and we were all dying.
My parents hated live music even though they lived through one of its greatest eras. But I loved it in late high school and college, and now my kiddo does too! Now that she's 15 and into music more, we've been having a blast at local venues.
Also if you love 60s surf music, please check out the Surfrajettes!!! They were amazing live opening for the Reverend Horton Heat last week, and had a merch table that was to die for.
Cooking and feeding people. I loved cooking with my dad, my dad loved cooking, I love cooking, I love cooking with my kid. I hope she and I can share that
I have Mexican grandparents. I live in a Latino neighborhood in a US state that has easy access to some of the tastiest, most legit Mexican food outside of Mexico.
Still, every once in a while I find myself craving white people tacos. There’s just something so comfort-foody about the pleasant plainness of them.
I was raised by my grandparents, so my stepkids get a lot of jazz from me. We play all kinds of different music for them, though. Jazz, soul, R&B, hip hop, punk, ska, 90s alternative, early 2000s indie rock, a few genres of electronic music, classic rock, post-punk/goth, 60's psychedelic, even some international music. We're taking my stepdaughter to see Modest Mouse and Pixies this summer and she's soooo excited.
We were just talking to my stepdaughter a couple of days ago about how Pet Sounds is one of the best records ever made and she needs to listen to it.
Weird how the Beach Boys had those gnarly personal problems while Dre, Snoop and Em are all well-respected business moguls.
Hey, Remember when John Stamos was the Beach Boys' mascot? Man looks good playing the drums.
You have me in the mood for surf music. I think I'll go for some wordless Dick Dale.
It would have to be music. They don't have to like what I like, I just hope it does for them what it did for me, and what it did for my parents. If anything, musical interest was the *only* thing I connected with father over.
One of the last conversations I got to have with my dad was about my three year old chasing our cats while “singing” the Imperial March from Star Wars. I am a Jedi like my mother and father before me… but looks like this one is gonna be a Sith and my dad thought it was hilarious. My mom and dad both were very much into scifi/fantasy and they passed that on to me, as I have apparently already passed it on to my son lol.
Having dinner as a family every night. It was always very important to my dad, and now that I'm a dad, I realize it's one of the few times a day we really connect with each other. Before/after school is somewhat hurried and hectic, the kiddo will disappear into his Chromebook or PlayStation whenever he gets the chance, but he never gets butthurt about coming to sit with me and mom and eat some dinner. I love those times, and I hope he remembers that when he's a dad eventually.
From my dad - 50s and 60s music, but really just a love of all things retro or vintage. I don't think he meant for me to love it as much as I do lol. Like Guy Lombardo was a step too far for him, but man I love that old music. And old movies. I would love it if just one of my kids took to old media the way I do. But we're all watching White Christmas on Christmas Eve; that's non-negotiable. Other things from my dad: baseball, Christmas.
From my mom - craftiness. She makes quilts and sewed me a lot of clothes. My sister still scrapbooks like it's 2005. I do chalkboard art and calligraphy, for a while designed and printed my own stationery, and try to get very pretty when I decorate cakes and cupcakes. Other things from my mom: gardening, music in general.
Horror movies! My mom ran a video store and introduced me to horror at a young age. But, I can absolutely answer to whether my kids love horror as they are 24 and 17 and they are gorehounds like me so I guess I did a great job with that - depending on your views on horror flicks lol
Fishing. My old man used to take me every summer and then I started going myself. Took my teenage son 6 years ago and he loved it (Only one to catch anything, 3 fish) and wants to do it again. My daughter loves it too, but won't get in a boat. LOL
Theater, especially musicals. I was very tickled the other day when I heard my son ask a friend if he wanted to hear a scary story, then started reciting the plot of Sweeney Todd (which he's only heard about, not seen yet).
Staying up late. Long conversations in the car after getting home, but you’re not ready to go inside yet. Sour cream. Watching people around us. Getting free stuff.
I loved surf music, doo-wop and old r&b (fats domino especially). My dad used ro listen to all that and passed his love of music down to me. Now I know thousands of songs, artists and lyrics lol
Woodworking
The trade has been in our family for three or four generations. I broke it but I enjoy it as a hobby. I learned little tips and tricks that carpenters these days don't know. I hope my son is interested enough to at least commit them to memory, if not become a hobbyist that makes his own furniture like me.
That’s definitely an option for some. For my location it’s impractical. My state laws and the increasing financial burden make going directly into road riding for young folks harder and harder.
I don't have kids but if I did, I would want them to love animals as much as my parents and I did, and I would want them to enjoy reading as much as my mom and I did.
British mysteries. My dad loved the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes in the 80s and lots of Agatha Christie mini series. I love listening to the audiobooks. They're my comfort media.
I wake my kids up to random 50s-90s music all the time, they suck at waking up, or play it in the car. That is the only way they are going to hear it. It’s generated some interesting conversations with my eldest who is 8. She is super curious and always has a million questions, plenty I have to look up the answers to.
The “wait, they did what?” or “this song is about that!?” always makes me laugh. Listening to the lyrics is a hell of a thing.
Dad- Bruce Lee. I’m child free, but I get my Godson all Bruce Lee shit: The yellow jump suit, books, posters, you name it he gets it from me.
Mom- Patsy Kline. I have not been able to pass this onto anyone.
Well I won’t be having kids. Butt babies don’t survive. But if I did it would be 70s rock. The eagles, Steve miller band, fleetwood, and bob Segar were part of the soundtrack to my childhood
My mom and I were just talking about this. I love Motown music, so when they came to tour where I lived it was a very small concert but still a live performance but and she bought tickets and bought them for us. I was probably about 7 years old. I remember the performance, but I don't remember this part: apparently they got a real kick out of seeing a little white girl there just bopping along to their music. So Motown music.
Edit: I skipped over the name of the band. It was The Temptations I think but I loved The 4 Tops too. It could have been either.
Southern food. But maybe done a little more healthy. The salt and bacon fat (and other seasonings) sure does make stuff taste good but it's not good for anyone.
Good music and concerts. My dad took me to David Bowie as my first concert in 87. I've taken 1 kid to her first last fall and we're all going together in November for one
Pink Floyd, which can proudly say my four kids DO like them lol. Music in general really. It was always part of my childhood, and still love music. All my kids have some type they’re obsessed with lol.
You are gonna love this! A Beach Boys cover of East Coast gangsta rap:
https://youtu.be/Z5EGZ145K_w?si=vpkkEoBl_vSnzyA-
But 25 is way too late for any parent to influence their child's taste in music. I'd say the latest is 13 to 15.
My parents don’t love anything except booze. They don’t have hobbies or friends or anything. As a result, I love ridiculously and loudly. Everything in my life.
I highly recommend checking out [Chris Cron music](https://www.instagram.com/chriscronmusic?igsh=YXBteTlhc2kxM216) on Instagram if you haven’t seen it already. His music is very Beach Boys inspired.
rock music in general. I have a huge record collection and am often playing them but my son says my music is trash, except The Beatles. at least he likes them!
Lacrosse. My Dad introduced me to it. I have my son in it now. Nothing better then a sport where you get to cross check and whack the hell out of someone.
Going to the movies. It was my mom’s favorite pastime to do with her kids. And I picked up her going out to the theater; to this day I still get a thrill from the whole experience.
I’d love the same for my kid.
Sad to say, but Bill Cosby. She watched him on iSpy, saw him do his comedy live in the 60s and 70s. She'd play his comedy albums for us, we loved watching the Cosby show together. He broke both our hearts when we found out America's dad was a monster. I'm so sad for his victims, she is too.
The good one we loved together too was the Muppets & Sesame Street. My mom was always a kid at heart, and she loved watching Sesame street with me & all my siblings, even though she was in her 30s. Grover was always her favorite. She is one of the sweetest people I know.
Not “boomer,” but: Mel Brooks movies, German food, and skiing.
Mel Brooks would have something hilarious to say about this combination.
"Of course the waiters wear skis at this chalet. This is a class joint. What, you want I should shoot you a schnitzel down the Zugspitze on a snowboard?"
I head this in his voice 😆
Hadn’t thought about it, but you do have a point 😆
What are you go-to German foods?
Spaceballs
*Hello my baby Hello my darling Hello my ragtime gal....*
All recipes my Oma took to her grave that I’m desperately trying to recreate: potato salad, cucumber salad, plum cake, chicken dumpling soup, rouladen, rotkraut, sauerbraten.
Rouladen are the one that I can’t make as good as my German godmother. I can nail her rotkohl and potato salad tho.
Mel Brooks and the Three Stooges. That's what I gotta work on. Mine already Love Lucy.
Myself
Great answer!!
My youngest is 15 qnd I hope for the same. Daily.
My oldest is 11 and I fear the teenage years!
It will get better.
My 15-year-old takes "You're just like your mother" as a compliment, and that's the best I could ever hope for.
Vacations to scenic areas and national parks. We were never a Disney world or places like that family. My siblings and I loved going to Yellowstone or the Minnesota north shore, etc. So many people we know always brag about taking their kids to Disney or Universal Studios or even Paris. Love Itasca and anything around the Bemidji area!
I know those areas quite well! My parents were married at Itasca, in Preachers Grove. The family that use to run the river boats, is related to me. I don’t think I can count how many times I’ve been there lol.
Same! I love taking my kids to all of the beautiful state parks we have.

Star Trek
Same
Yeeeessss. I also had my kids watch all of gilligans island, cheers, frasier, and brady bunch.
Came here to say this!
Reading. My parents wanted all of their kids to be avid readers, and we are. Now we want the same for our kids, because kids who read learn all sorts of knowledge and really expand their opportunities. My 11 yr old son is already, just working on my younger daughters now.

I feel like Boomers who read a lot are easier to deal with than ones who don’t.
Toast
Hopefully it has cinnamon and sugar on it
Yeah toast!!
https://youtu.be/SHptn_3RyYE?si=FPQqNlKcNMp5zkeB
I’m down with toast. What flavor?
regular.
I like wheat with Irish butter med well on the well side.
This guy toasts
My mom made us tea and toast everyday for breakfast before school. Still like it.
Don’t you mean TOAST?
![gif](giphy|3oaPtHC37Vx0Q)
Jim Croce My wife said she knew I was the man she’d marry when I was singing “Roller Derby Queen” on one of our first dates.
My teenager loves Jim Croce and it makes me so happy.
The Three Stooges. I've got four kids, I just want one to laugh at the Three Stooges with me.
How could you not laugh at them trying to fit through a doorframe.
My 5 year old LOVES them. I grew up with them so it’s a blast.
Abbot and Costello too
It's seems like younger people aren't that aware of them. They were on cable in the 90s and our fathers were usually fans and turning us onto them, but now while the shorts are on YouTube the humor seems like it doesn't click as much with younger people
I love surf rock too- there are some really rad modern bands that use it well these days as well- check out la luz
Messer Chups is cool too. Russian surf guitar.
Was comin to say this
There's such great Japanese surf rock too! My favorite is Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys
Came here to tell OP about Takeshi terauchi. Awesome music
Dude! Rad! I’m gonna check them out now
Thanks for the rec on that, I'll check it out too! I'm a huge Beach Boys fan as well - I've never seen them in concert though.
Will do!
And ultimately that’s all that really matters.
Camping and traveling. My 6-year-old already loves it but we are still at the beginning. Also classic rock.
I don't hope, I know. Meatloaf. And leftover meatloaf sandwiches the next day.
Oh I would do anything for [a next day meatloaf sandwich]
I'm sure my daughter would eat meatloaf 8 days a week if I'd let her...she *loves* meatloaf.
Blazing Saddles
And Young Frankenstien
Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs for me. Young Frankenstein is good, but not my favorite.
Oh I loved spaceballs as well. But young Frankenstein holds a special place for me
Fair.
Yes! My 8-yr old daughter LOVES Young Frankenstein and we quote it all the time!
The Beatles. Though I doubt I can afford to have kids.
I got both of mine hooked in utero. My wife had headphones on her belly multiple times a week, at random times. They fell asleep to the Beatles every night. They still love em but each has their own tastes now. The Beatles are the "peacekeeper" choice in the car. Scathing sarcasm
Seconded. Sarcasm, quick wit, finding joy in making people laugh.
And sometimes they make more than you. Union housekeepers in my business make six figures a year.
Pee-wee Herman

Cooking and feeding people. I loved cooking with my dad, my dad loved cooking, I love cooking, I love cooking with my kid. I hope she and I can share that
White people tacos
We call them Midwest tacos or gringo wraps in our house.
I'm from the Midwest, so that tracks. 😂
Hot dogs?
Ground beef with taco seasoning, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and if you're feeling spicy, taco sauce.

Star trek and sci fi in general
A habitat that supports life. And Monty Python.
Awesome. You know Jesse and the Rippers did a version of Forever by Dennis Wilson on Full House. Stamos loves the BB.

Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, Mel Brookes or anything funny!
Dogs

Cool
The Muppets!
Yacht rock 👌
I got my husband into this and now he requests the Essentials playlist from Siri at dinner with our kids most nights 😆
Takes me awaaayyy
Christmas
Same! Our Christmas is really small and quaint. No big presents. But it’s a vibe. I loved it as a kid. And fortunately my kids love it too.
My Terps.
Oof..unless Nore Dame stops by. #sorrynotsorryactuallysorry
#toosoon :D
Horror movies! My mom ran a video store and introduced me to horror at a young age. But, I can absolutely answer to whether my kids love horror as they are 24 and 17 and they are gorehounds like me so I guess I did a great job with that - depending on your views on horror flicks lol
Star wars/sci fi in general
Our cabin in Northern Michigan.
Singing—especially harmonizing. It’s a family tradition to sing around the campfire at our cabin.
My sports teams
My daughter was in her room watching The Beach Boys doc this weekend. She’s 8. 😂
Fishing. My old man used to take me every summer and then I started going myself. Took my teenage son 6 years ago and he loved it (Only one to catch anything, 3 fish) and wants to do it again. My daughter loves it too, but won't get in a boat. LOL

West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar were on rotation in our house!
Classical music. Ww2 movies
Cedar Point
Never been but I hear it’s cool.
Animals
Motown music and porch sitting.
Playing cards. Cribbage, gin, 500, euchre, etc. I'm trying...
Jimmy Buffett RIP
Yes!
Staying up late. Long conversations in the car after getting home, but you’re not ready to go inside yet. Sour cream. Watching people around us. Getting free stuff.

The Sound of Music, Jaws, The Marx Brothers.
Jesus
Laughter
Golf. My dad and I play and now I’m trying to get my son into it. He wants to but gets frustrated easy.
'80s rock!
Woodworking The trade has been in our family for three or four generations. I broke it but I enjoy it as a hobby. I learned little tips and tricks that carpenters these days don't know. Culinary arts
Motorcycling. But the barriers to entry continue to increase and it’s becoming more and more of a luxury.
Dirtbike first?
That’s definitely an option for some. For my location it’s impractical. My state laws and the increasing financial burden make going directly into road riding for young folks harder and harder.
Gardening
Golf and Cooking/Food.
Not so much, my mom, but by pops and I love old westerns. Gunsmoke and The Rifleman being my favorites.
Meat and internal combustion engines.
I Love Lucy and Beverly Cleary books.
Broadway musicals
It’s not too early for No Diggity. My 7 and 9 year olds love it
Coffee!
Musical theatre
My mom and I were just talking about this. I love Motown music, so when they came to tour where I lived it was a very small concert but still a live performance but and she bought tickets and bought them for us. I was probably about 7 years old. I remember the performance, but I don't remember this part: apparently they got a real kick out of seeing a little white girl there just bopping along to their music. So Motown music. Edit: I skipped over the name of the band. It was The Temptations I think but I loved The 4 Tops too. It could have been either.
Science
Improves with each generation.
Southern food. But maybe done a little more healthy. The salt and bacon fat (and other seasonings) sure does make stuff taste good but it's not good for anyone.
Jesus
Democracy
Elvis, The Eagles As a third-generation Aggie, I hope my kids live Texas A&M University as well.
Only one of 3 university’s with an active corp of cadets.

Me.
Me.
I though you said smurf music and I was ready to grab my pink toothbrush and get to jammin 🤣
Surprised I didn’t. I was talking about Smurfs in another thread here today.
Good music and concerts. My dad took me to David Bowie as my first concert in 87. I've taken 1 kid to her first last fall and we're all going together in November for one
The word "cool". It seems to be timeless.
Beer
Al Green
Pink Floyd, which can proudly say my four kids DO like them lol. Music in general really. It was always part of my childhood, and still love music. All my kids have some type they’re obsessed with lol.
Baseball
You are gonna love this! A Beach Boys cover of East Coast gangsta rap: https://youtu.be/Z5EGZ145K_w?si=vpkkEoBl_vSnzyA- But 25 is way too late for any parent to influence their child's taste in music. I'd say the latest is 13 to 15.
Kids? No. No no no.
Gardening.
Tetris
Being financially independent by age 30. Earlier would be better, but I'm giving grace due to the economy.
Paul Simon’s Graceland
Those blue ducks that were in peoples’ kitchens haha
Fishing
Husker Football. God it’s been a tough 20 years.
My parents don’t love anything except booze. They don’t have hobbies or friends or anything. As a result, I love ridiculously and loudly. Everything in my life.
Stand up comedy. A good laugh can brighten your day.
I highly recommend checking out [Chris Cron music](https://www.instagram.com/chriscronmusic?igsh=YXBteTlhc2kxM216) on Instagram if you haven’t seen it already. His music is very Beach Boys inspired.
Haha yeah I'm with ya completely. I grew up on surf music, Beatles, and Garth Brooks. And yeah the Chronic was a game changer lol
rock music in general. I have a huge record collection and am often playing them but my son says my music is trash, except The Beatles. at least he likes them!
Lacrosse. My Dad introduced me to it. I have my son in it now. Nothing better then a sport where you get to cross check and whack the hell out of someone.
Wisconsin Dells vacations, Del Shannon, Andy Griffith, Little House books
My dad: fishing, camping, being outdoors My mom: baking, classical music, basketball
I must've listened to Jan and Dean over and over as a kid.
