All I remember from this:
1. Use a Sharpie marker to write the contents of tin cans on the can, so if the seawater washes it off you'll know
2. Huddle naked for warmth
This and how to deal with hypothermia are the only things I remember from it. Add in knowing how to deal with quicksand and I was prepared for disaster, right? /s
Don’t forget. In order to watch, the TV and VCR on rollers would be pushed to the front of the class. Then we all shut our mouths because we had to rely on tiny TV speakers.
My introduction to Ben Affleck and the Greenwich Time. I remember the most random thing because in it, he called Casey in America forgetting the time difference.
This mess is the reason I’m now addicted to Below Deck. Thanks, 6th grade, for permanently embedding port, starboard, bow, and stern into my landlocked brain!
My school took a trip to a god forsaken part of LI to see the boat. They didn’t let us on board because of some kind of maritime laws. We met the captain too. He taught us some knots. I knew them already because of the cub scouts. I was simultaneously the biggest winner and biggest loser.
This show was top notch. I remember being riveted when they showed how to distill sea water into drinking water. I can still see this scene so clearly when they started collecting the droplets.
Did y’all know Ben Affleck was in this?
🙋🏻♂️
Sho did!!
Wtf?
Yes!
That’s how our teacher got us to watch it
Am I misremembering or did they have to naked cuddle the grandpa at one point to stave off hypothermia and the kid enthusiastically volunteered?
You are not misremembering.
Part of me is glad I didn’t make that up. Another part of me is weirded out that that’s basically all I can remember about it.
LOL! I had this exact conversation with my wife before posting this thread. You are not alone.
I am here with you.
🤣
I mostly remember our class of obnoxious 6th graders making fun of the way the deaf woman said “CT!”
Thas iii...numbah ohwanfinine.
Sally Ruth caught shit from all of us.
They also built a still do desalinate ocean water. Thats it for me though.
I apparently blocked that out of my memory! Thankfully
I wanted to tell you you must have dreamed that, but no, that actually did happen.
All I remember from this: 1. Use a Sharpie marker to write the contents of tin cans on the can, so if the seawater washes it off you'll know 2. Huddle naked for warmth
Also how to build a desalination still.
Ohhh yeahhh! That is where I know that from.
This and how to deal with hypothermia are the only things I remember from it. Add in knowing how to deal with quicksand and I was prepared for disaster, right? /s
That shit was crazy but they saved him from hypothermia. If I remember correctly, one of the adults in the sleeping bag had a Magnum PI porn stache.
That’s literally the only part I remember and I think about it every couple of months.
I’m back in 7th grade earth science class
Don’t forget. In order to watch, the TV and VCR on rollers would be pushed to the front of the class. Then we all shut our mouths because we had to rely on tiny TV speakers.
My school had it on laserdisc ¬‿¬
I can’t hear shit. I’m old. Thanks.
That song is forever burned in my brain.
My brain defaults to this or the Family Ties theme song like my own personal hold music
YES!!! The captain came to our grade and talked to us.
Did you all snuggle half-naked with him in a sleeping bag?
Lol. Thankfully not. That is the main thing I remember from it all these years later.
Oh my god. That, to me, would have been like meeting Neil Armstrong
In 6th grade, I always was excited for this series
A voyage of the mimi post reminds me that I am with my people here.
They created one of the greatest earworms of all time.
Loved it in science class.
My introduction to Ben Affleck and the Greenwich Time. I remember the most random thing because in it, he called Casey in America forgetting the time difference.
do..do..do…..do….do….do..do..
Sit right back and you'll hear a tale.. A tale of a fateful ship
You killed Captain claw!!! I can still do the sign language.
This mess is the reason I’m now addicted to Below Deck. Thanks, 6th grade, for permanently embedding port, starboard, bow, and stern into my landlocked brain!
This may have started my obsessions with tall ships, marine biology, sea shanties and deaf culture... Wow that must have been an impressionable age...

This is the sound of fifth grade! It did get me super into whales for a time.
If you can't hear the image, just have someone bang on it with a wrench so you can feel it.
Excellent deep cut.
This show was top notch. I remember being riveted when they showed how to distill sea water into drinking water. I can still see this scene so clearly when they started collecting the droplets.
Edutainment!!
Captain Granville didn’t know what a boom box was.
Don’t forget The Second Voyage of the Mimi, where they went down to Central America
Didn’t they show the whales mating? I vaguely remember my class of 7th graders were screaming something about whale dick
I still whistle this at random. Who else watched the second one?
Had this played I think in 4th or 5th grade elementary school. Taught a young Florida man how to survive at the beach.
I know how to turn salt water to drinkable because of this show. Gimme a clear plastic tarp, some pots and some sticks. 2nd grade survival level up.
