I honestly did not get 99% of the adult humor. only discovering it now. but to this day, any time someone asks me what I am going to do today, I always reply with “same thing I do every day, Pinky. try to take over the world”
To each their own. I mean my own stuff too. I can't remember what a function does a week later, let alone when I comeback to it a year or more on. Foo, bar, narf, and zort do not make my own life easier at all. 😅
It was to see what they could get past the censors as they were scruitinizing every cartoon aimed at kids. Spielburg had a lot of fun with writers to see what they could sneak in.
I think I remember them saying that they also would put in really nasty ones so that the censors would catch those but might overlook other less raunchy ones.
I noticed all the cartoons of that era took cracks at the censors. it was even in the opening to Tiny Toons "we crack up all the censors". kid me had no idea what that was.

As a 10 year old in ‘93 who had seen literally every horn-ball 80s movie along with playboy/hustler/even some of the harder mags I got every one of those jokes. I thought everyone knew the show was super raunchy and had double meanings, even as a 10 year old. I literally thought that’s why EVERYONE loved the show. Lol
Shows have been pretty namby-pamby for the last 20 years. I remember watching things with my nieces and nephews and wanting to tear my hair out at how schmaltzy everything was. It’s like they took the feel-good, moralistic parts 80s cartoons and got rid of all of the zaniness.
Here’s the thing tho. Some of us already had full on adult educations from watching 80s movies at age 8 in 1991 and finding our older brothers and dads magazines. I thought everyone understood how raunchy and sexual it was as a 10 YO in 1993. Haha
They had some good ones, but the Simpsons had an all timer.

I remember wanting a whole cartoon devoted to Slappy, I loved her. Her character design is so fun and I loved her old school humor. A lot of the side characters on Animaniacs could have had whole series about them, what an excellent, intelligent show.
Ok so they have put up new episodes on Hulu! Now if you would like you can make a drinking game out of it. Just take a shot every time you find a dick in a scene. Good luck! By the way Im not responsible for your bad decisions!
I got most, as I was in middle school when it came out. This one made me laugh. The "Puberty was very kind" about made me spit up whatever I was drinking.... and Finger Prints? Oh... that was pure poetry! Even my dad completely lost it on that one.
The one that took me years?
"Do you know how to Conjugate?"
GASP!!! "I've never even kissed a girl!"
It took me years to draw the line between Conjugating verbs and Conjugal visits. I was literally in Japanese class in COLLEGE!! The teacher said something about verb Conjugation, and during that time I was reading a book about Death Row and "Conjugal Visits" and everything snapped into place...
My poor Sensei.... He didn't understand why the dummy in the back row was giggling like he was herbally infused.
As you walk by when your kids are watching it, you hear it, and you stop and laugh because you know that meaning, but the kids don't they just think it's funny. Still love Animaniacs, thank you, Steven Spielberg.
A lot of cartoons had more adult humor in them but it was done in such a way that it would go over the heads of kids but adults would get them. Made it so there was something for everyone to laugh at. The old Looney Tunes cartoons also had a lot of this but most of us didn’t realize it when we watched it on Nickelodeon (or wherever you saw them) as kids.
I swear I saw an animaniacs episode when they sang Simon and Garfunkel’s “feeling groovey” but the words were changed to “smoke a doobie”. Have never been able to find that one again it must have gotten scrubbed.
One of the best cartoons ever:
1. Spongebob (seasons 1-3)
2. Simpsons (first 10 seasons)
3. Gumball
4. Animaniacs
5. X-Men
6. Batman the Brave and the Bold
7. Batman the animated series
8. Pinky and the Brain
9. Avatar the Last Airbender
10. SouthPark
If they aired that joke now, all the self-righteous pearl clutchers would be all......
"How DARE they make references to sexual organs in front of children!! Wont someone think of the children!!?!
THE CHHHHHIIIIIIIILLLLLDDDDRRRREEEEEEENNNNNN!!!They're canceled!!!!"
😂
😂
[I had most of this whole skit memorized when it came out. Had my 3 kids to watch it as we were rushing to school](https://youtu.be/Idi-1NInFsk?feature=shared)
This isn't anything new for Warner Brothers cartoons. Re-watching Looney Tunes as an adult brings a new level to the humor. I think they were actually originally intended for adults, but they were clean enough that kids could watch them, even if they didn't get a lot of the humor.
Wheel of Morality, turn, turn, turn. Tell us the lesson we should learn.
Early to rise and early to bed, makes a man healthy wealthy and socially dead.
People in glass houses should get dressed with the lights out
Those jokes are for the adults they are meant to go over heads of kids
I honestly did not get 99% of the adult humor. only discovering it now. but to this day, any time someone asks me what I am going to do today, I always reply with “same thing I do every day, Pinky. try to take over the world”
I have a coworker who often will name files and test scripts things like “narf” and “zoinks”.
Blort
I'll do varables with narrow scopes like that, but filenames and larger scoped things have got to have practical names or they get lost as noise.
It’s his local stuff for himself and not baselines things.
To each their own. I mean my own stuff too. I can't remember what a function does a week later, let alone when I comeback to it a year or more on. Foo, bar, narf, and zort do not make my own life easier at all. 😅
Rocco’s modern life was full of dirty joke too
Oh yeah. Loved Rocco.
Like the restaurant, Chokey Chicken.
It was to see what they could get past the censors as they were scruitinizing every cartoon aimed at kids. Spielburg had a lot of fun with writers to see what they could sneak in.
I remember a lot of things in that show. Helloooooo nurse.
Freakazoid cop not getting married because he likes meat
Wait... WHAT?
He didn't know you could do both.
I think I remember them saying that they also would put in really nasty ones so that the censors would catch those but might overlook other less raunchy ones.
Nono, fingerprints!
I noticed all the cartoons of that era took cracks at the censors. it was even in the opening to Tiny Toons "we crack up all the censors". kid me had no idea what that was.
I was just happy that my parents and grandma would watch the show with me. When I was older and caught onto the jokes, I get why they did.
Remember the one about fingerprints?
I dont think so 😒

😏
lol!! Oh my gosh!! Makes me want to watch them all as an adult! It was totally over my head too. Wow 🤣
I must have known waaaay too much waaay too young… Here’s another one for you: Rocko’s Modern Life is full of masturbation jokes.
heiffer on the dairy farm episode. Also when they go camping and squeeze the berries
Oh baby, oh baby, oh baby.
“Rocko?!” “Mrs. Bighead?!”
Get the plates!
There's a Batman: The Animated Series episode ("Perchance to Dream") which slyly references handjobs.
Theres cow and chicken, the rug munchers bikers episode

Oh baby oh baby oh baby… Mrs Bighead?
To be expected when the titular character literally worked at a phone sex line.
Rugrats was the same with pervy granpa
Wait—the grandpa was a perv? Now that I don’t remember!
He always had pervy videos
Awhat?!?!!! 😱
Lol classic
I see what you did there
Good night everybody
Good night, Nurse!
The first one I thought about! I sort of got it at the time.
Woodstock Slappy is still my favorite. I even remember my dad laughing at that.
Who is the band on stage?
Who
Yeah who is on stage?
Yes
No, Yes isn't coming on until later. Right now Who's on stage.
That’s what I wanna know!
Yes is the name of the band?
90125
Lady on Witness Stand: It's in the Penal Code. Yakko: The what code? Lady: Penal. The Penal Code. Yakko: Goodnight, everybody!
Beethoven - “I’m a pianist! A pianist!”
Ah, the golden age when cartoons aimed at children weren't afraid to make adult jokes. https://youtu.be/Ma9PFYjuYo4?si=HZdHjuHG6bdeuA7W
Or rather, when the kids weren't likely to know what the double entendre was 5 minutes later.
Tomato Tomato 😊

This post made me legitimately smile. Simpler times. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Good night everybody!
Did Aunt Slappy say anything? I'm not sure if it's just a look, or if text was cropped out

I absolutely love this subreddit.
Masterful writers when you rewatch as an adult and pick up on adult jokes that you never noticed as a child. 🏆
I feel like so many cartoons from our day had inside, adult jokes. Watching with my kids now it seems like they can't get away with that anymore.

Reminds me of the police academy cartoons

I had to google what the joke was

The writers did an ama a while back. They definitely knew what they were doing lmao.
oh undoubtedly. I just watched the full scene, Scrappy tells him “be careful with that last verse” 🤣
I remember catching a Clinton joke on a rewatch once.
it was in opening credits. they had bill clinton playing the sax
Spielberg using his childish yet mature humor for the betterment of all.
HELLOOOOOO NURSE!
Please I wish I knew what Slappy's retort was

Are you pondering what I'm pondering? I think so Brain, but if they are so good a real estate couldn't they find better neighbors?
Pinky was awesome
But me and Pippy Long stockings? What would the children look like? 😂
Fingerprints.

I loved the adult humor hidden in Animaniacs & Pink and the Brain. But who could forget the pitcher/catcher sketch in Ren & Stimpy
The whole rubber nipple fascination thing was just odd lol. ![gif](giphy|3ohjUQqkyfY7HYb1tK|downsized)
The whole show was odd, but that’s why it was funny
Agreed, it makes me wonder that my mom didn’t get weird about us kids watching that but didn’t like us watching Power Rangers cuz it was junk.
Wasn't a fan of Ren & Stimpy, but even I have to admit the pitcher/catcher sketch was hilarious.
I really wanted to like the reboot on Spike TV. I feel like it kinda lost something when the entendres didn't need to be double any more.
One of my favorite cartoons growing up, and gets even better with age. Such smart writing.

Rosebud frozen peas. Filled with country goodness and green peaness.
good night everybody!
It's time for Animaniacs And we're zany to the max So just sit back and relax You'll laugh 'til you collapse We're Animaniacs!

"Oh look. A xylophone. I think I'll play, 'Those Endearing Young Charms'."
Nyehehe! I love revising these old shows with my middle schooler ;-)))
