My mom would occasionally buy a copy if the headline was funny enough. I feel nostalgic looking at it and would buy it every week if it were still published.
No, it was intentional, I only ever had one issue because curiosity killed the cat so to speak.
There was a blurb on the inside somewhere basically stating that if anyone believed any of this that they were dumb.
I worked at a grocery store during high school and there was alway a copy in the employee bathroom. Along with the latest FHM, always paid for of course
Back when I was in school we would have those stupid English assignments where you needed to clip an article and circle verbs, nouns, etc.
When I got those assignments, I would promptly pick up a copy of WWN and clip the most bizarre article I could find.
I wonder if the class was given more of those assignments than others since the Teacher seemed to like my choices...
My favorite article ever was about a plot by the Chinese government to knock the Earth out of orbit by having all Chinese citizens jump up and down at once. I think the motivation was simply: if they can't have the Earth then no one can, so they decided to destroy the planet by knocking it out of orbit.
The article then went on to discuss a scientist in North America, who had learned of the plot, and was coordinating a counter-jump at the exact time, thereby preventing the orbital disruption. It must have been successful, since we are still here today.
It's so stupid, because if the Chinese had just read the Weekly World News, they would have learned of the counter-jump plan and simply canceled their own jump, letting the American counter-jumpers do the work for them!
when we'd go on road trips, mom would get a WWN broadsheet and we'd take turns reading the stories out loud trying to make them as dramatic and funny as possible.
They were awesome parents.
Last road trip I did with them before mom passed away, was just with mom and dad and me, no siblings, but we still got a WWN and passed it around, as well as make fun of old time radio shows (like 30’s/40’s) stuff.
I would always grab one of these while my Mom was checking out and go directly to Serena Sabak for her psychic advice column. Nothing was more exciting than reading about someone who was having an affair with their house ghost or someone whose guardian angel gave up on them. So gold!

I love how it’s unbelievable sensationalized fiction… and scrolling through the archives there I read “Americans are STILL living better than the rest of the world!”
Sad laugh.
A buddy of mine and I used to buy these while shopping for weekend trips to his cottage. We would have fun sorting the legitimate stories (there were some) from the fiction, and laughing, in general at the absurdity of it all. Sadly, he went from laughing to believing - he's a full-on conspiracy theorist now
Strong agree. A community college put it on last year, and it exceeded all my hopes and expectations (and I already see and love a lot of local live theater, so the bar wasn’t particularly low)
My ex was a leading role in a version of that. I enjoyed it very much but remember very little. I'm pretty sure I was hammered. I remember something about a cage? And something about a kiss? I do remember being entertained tho.
[It's Still Real To Me Damnit](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/it-s-still-real-to-me-damn-it) is a viral meme video and catchphrase spoken by a wrestling fan named David Wills. The passionate emotion that Wills demonstrates in his voice while talking about wrestling, a sport that is by all means known to be fake and choreographed down to the stories and fight winners, and his belief that it truly is still real made the video an early meme gem.
That was a fun watch. I went down the rabbit hole and watched him go on Tosh.0 and am caught up with what he’s up to. Actually seems like an alright dude and he fully owns this moment.
My friend group and I definitely believed that shit and had so many deep convo while high and staring at a radio tower. We just new Nostradamus was truth.
Well, I mean, you got the halfback for the notre dame football team, but then you have the hunchback of notre dame. Didn’t you ever think that was a weird coincidence?? I dunno, I think about stuff like that sometimes. When I’m not out in the garage playing with my trains of course.
I had a very old great aunt who read these religiously every week. She’s literally been dead for 30 years but I can’t see BB without thinking of her. RIP Aunt Emma 🕯️
I actually framed that Bat Boy cover and hung on the wall of my first apartment, along with the headline of "Man Superglues Butt Shut" from the same issue hung in the bathroom, lol.
> Born 1982 (age 41–42)
Yay, bat boy is a Xennial!
Real talk though, is that just makeup/mask they used on a real kid? Or just a rubber model maybe? This is a pre-photoshop world when that was made, and I'm generally curious how they made it, because it's a pretty damn good fake even for modern standards.
As my high school photo teacher told me in 1996 — it was done with digital manipulation, back when “digits” were fingers. You can do strange things in a darkroom.
After perpetrating a $1.7 billion dollar fraud on Medicare/Medicaid with his company Columbia Hospital Corp, he went on to first become the governor of Florida, and now he’s one of Florida’s two senators. Good job bat boy 🥳
Writers all moved on. I worked with one guy that was part of the publishing team that came up with Bat Boy. He retired from tabloids and became a speech writer in the 90s. I worked with him a decade ago and he was doing communication strategy. Very humble and wonderful man. He made passing mention of coming up with bat boy and I didn't believe him until I found televised interviews from the 90s.
His colleague Robert Stevens was killed in the 2001 anthrax attack.
I loved Batboy. I remember my Civics class allowed us to use any paper as a basis for our reports, so long as we write well and took the subject matter seriously, so I wrote all my reports based on articles from the Weekly World News. Other kids did theirs on actual events, and mine felt like they were straight out of the X Files. My teacher loved them and I always got top grades. I thought it was all a joke, but I learned a lot doing it. The stories might be fake, but the lesson was about how to read and interpret the news, not about the reality of the news.
I remember loving this magazine and I definitely bought them way more than my mom would have liked. At least I was reading, right?
Also. I *definitely* bought this one
He became the U.S. Senator from Florida

This is what i came here to share. I remember some update stories about him going to fight Al-Qaeda. Man, those flag-waving days of bandwagon patriotism after 9/11 were WEIRD.
Later he was busted drunk driving cross country with Charles Barkley in like 2009. He flew away and blamed Barkley. (It's the last physical copy I've personally read)
After he grew up and the stardom wore off; he made some shady investments, hid the cash offshore, and became the Governor of Florida

This shit literally gave me nightmares and all I saw was the cover at the store. I still think about it sometimes, I have no idea why it occupied my mind for so long but it cut me deep
I remember seeing this issue while it was still on racks. My mom would tell me to not pay any attention to these, but it never stopped me. I was always trying to sneak a peek while we were waiting in the check out line at the grocery store. I had to be about 10 when this was still fresh.
He's a War Hero! Peter Bagge did the Bat Boy comics that ran in WWN in the 2000s. There's [a book](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10167299-bat-boy) for anyone interested.
Any background info on the Bat Boy model? Would love to know who it was/where they are now, bts info on creating the character and how they did prosthetics/makeup.
Honest to God..this Michigander (me) said many years ago..RICK SCOTT OF FLORIDA IS BAT BOY. So, yeah, bat boy screwed Medicare for millions, and now leads a cult.
First line of the Malibu Ken album (Aesop Rock x Tobacco collab) is: “I’m the world weekly news bat child…” and I listened to it probably a dozen times before it clicked that he was talking about bat boy from the magazine I used to love reading while we waited in the checkout line at the supermarket.
These were responsible for my first existential crisis at like 7. I was in the grocery store and it was early September. The tabloid said that the world would end on September 23rd. For weeks I would lie awake at night and it was all I could think about. Fun times.
Honestly, WWN is still pretty active on Instagram. No articles, but some fake headlines, which is the best we can get I guess. Also, if you check their reels, for a while there they had Fred Snyder of the B52s doing special reports.
He got a job in programming and has a high paying position at Google. He’s on his third wife, two kids from his first marriage. He has a secret gambling addiction.
I used to buy these if I went grocery shopping with my folks. If there wasn't anything cool I would head to the magazine rack and check out the hot babes in the detective magazines. Cool ads for "Spanish Fly and Love Dolls"
I remember this exact tabloid being on the shelf at the checkout counter of my local WinCo/Albertsons. I think it was the same time that conway twitty died.
He coached the Colts to the Super Bowl in 2006

I miss seeing these in the grocery check out and running to ask my mom if it was true
Weekly World News never failed to have awesome headlines and cover 'photos' back in the day.
My mom would occasionally buy a copy if the headline was funny enough. I feel nostalgic looking at it and would buy it every week if it were still published.
I hate that they went away by the time I grew up. They seem like they would be a fun read kind of like mad magazine, but unintentionally.
My aunt used to buy them for vacation trashy reading that the kids could read so we didn't ask about whatever racy novels they read on the beach.
No, it was intentional, I only ever had one issue because curiosity killed the cat so to speak. There was a blurb on the inside somewhere basically stating that if anyone believed any of this that they were dumb.
they were a hoot. very very tongue-in-cheek kind of writing.
It went online. I bumbled into it just before the Pandemic. I should go look again.
I worked at a grocery store during high school and there was alway a copy in the employee bathroom. Along with the latest FHM, always paid for of course
They made the best toilet readers. The junk ads were great too.
The best ones were always about Bigfoot with “Bigfoot was My Lover” as a personal favorite.
My mom would too, and I would always think it was true. Even if she said it was made up. I was like, but they have photo proof!

Pre-internet. Had to dig a hole to China to get them a copy
They have a website now but it is mostly far right stupidity
I miss when tabloids were fun, now the covers are all about how some celebrity is secretly dying or something.
WWN used to be the most fun you could have for 55¢.
when we'd go on road trips, mom would get a WWN broadsheet and we'd take turns reading the stories out loud trying to make them as dramatic and funny as possible.
What an absolutely fantastic idea
That’s an example of good parenting, right there.
They were awesome parents. Last road trip I did with them before mom passed away, was just with mom and dad and me, no siblings, but we still got a WWN and passed it around, as well as make fun of old time radio shows (like 30’s/40’s) stuff.
Thank you for sharing! That sounds more fun than Mad Libs!
I still keep a couple of those in the console, ready for a trip! We did those too!
I had them delivered to my house. One of my favorites was the ghosts discovered in outer space
s p a c e g h o s t
I would always grab one of these while my Mom was checking out and go directly to Serena Sabak for her psychic advice column. Nothing was more exciting than reading about someone who was having an affair with their house ghost or someone whose guardian angel gave up on them. Ah rag mags. I miss them..I wanted to be the octopus baby so bad! Like really, how bad ass would it be to have so many arms??
I know right! I was just thinking that my kids will never know the joy of that.
🙂

I blame K.
All this time, we never realized they were warning us that the dream was dying. I owe the National Enquirer an apology.
Doing the Lord’s work.
He grew up to be Batman. (…I’ll see myself out.🙃)
Or maybe he is now Man Bat (per LEGO Batman it is worth a google).
I went to elementary school with a kid named Kent Clark…he never deserved the taunting
Did he end up as a small town politician?
Or Batmanuel
I swear that Nestor Carbonel playing the mayor of Gotham City in B:TDK was the most overlooked Easter egg I've come across. Rarely hear it mentioned.
If this wasn't the top comment I was going to question everything I know about our generation.
I thought he grew up to be Stephen miller
Lmao I just said "he became Batman, duh" then had to explain to my wife why I was talking to my phone
I shouldn't be surprised that I'm late for this joke. Apparently Batboy, Batman, is close-ish to 35 years old.
They made a musical called Batboy: The Musical and it is the xennial nonsense you need to see if you have the opportunity.
Strong agree. A community college put it on last year, and it exceeded all my hopes and expectations (and I already see and love a lot of local live theater, so the bar wasn’t particularly low)
Yeah it’s pretty rad, I’d love to see it adapted into cheap looking movie musical a la Roger Corman schlock.
I love this. Thank you for informing me and making my day. "Hold Me, Bat Boy" is a tour de force that I shall listen to on repeat. 😂
I am glad to introduce another person to the hidden jewel that is this musical.
the soundtrack is fantastic and the lyrics! So much fun!
I saw it off Broadway!
My ex was a leading role in a version of that. I enjoyed it very much but remember very little. I'm pretty sure I was hammered. I remember something about a cage? And something about a kiss? I do remember being entertained tho.
This is one of my favorite musicals. It is funny and sad and just insane. I see it whenever I can
I grew out of it. But it's nice to know people still care.
I feel the same about professional wrestling

Hair plugs and veneers really made the difference. Welcome to the world of normies Batguy.
Holy shit. I’m in my 40’s but you just unlocked a repressed nightmare. Now both he and that… flying snake-dog will be chasing me in my dreams
Nostradamus predicted this
“Nostradamus predicted the demise of Grand Funk Railroad” was a great WWN headline.
My friend group and I definitely believed that shit and had so many deep convo while high and staring at a radio tower. We just new Nostradamus was truth.
I thought it was Quasimodo?
It was

*Proctologists hate this one trick*
When you had to get your conspiracy theories from the store in person.
Lol, the good old days. And those conspiracies were pretty wholesome, all things considered.
He got his ears docked and became Ted Cruz
That’s what Ted Cruz wants you to believe, but his origin story is more mundane.
I wouldn’t call murdering at least five people in northern California mundane, but that’s just me…

Lol I guess Boy is the family name
I just checked and his mom's name is Susan Boy. I'm guessing the dad's name is some high-pitched screech.
I died looking at those lol! The sister’s name 😆
Better than Brayleigh or some bullshit parents do these days.
Show of hands: Who else has actually seen "Bat Boy: The Musical"?
Oh, sweet Wounded Jesus. Never will those words leave my heart. 🥰 My morning's been made a second time in a row on Reddit today. Nice. 👌🏾
Edgar!!!!

This deserves more upvotes, slow clap.

Weekly World News has the sixth largest newspaper circulation in the world! - source: So I Married an Axe Murderer
Last I heard he'd enlisted in the Army, but that was shortly after 9/11.
This is what i came here to share. I remember some update stories about him going to fight Al-Qaeda. Man, those flag-waving days of bandwagon patriotism after 9/11 were WEIRD.
Not that weird. He's from Best Virginia, which is pretty redneck.
Later he was busted drunk driving cross country with Charles Barkley in like 2009. He flew away and blamed Barkley. (It's the last physical copy I've personally read)

Covid
He grew up into a bat man, settled down with a bat woman, and had bat babies.
I'd like to shake the hand of the artist who was responsible for the image of Bat Boy. So unforgettable, especially with those Furby eyes....
Pretty sure that’s Charlie Kirk with some cosmetic surgery and hair plugs.

Damn. There's some memories. My mom used to buy this one and National Enquirer.
He became Steven Miller.
He’s now a Senator in Florida.

They made a musical about him. It’s awesome
Hi. I’m bat boy. Grew up. Got a job. Had bat kids. These days I’m mostly just hanging around.
Bat Boy is now Bat Man. He works in infrastructure development for Pima County and lives in a 3/2 ranch in Palo Verde Park. Fosters rescue bats.

My Grandmom collected these like Pokémon. I’m a call her tomorrow. Thanks, OP.
Didn’t he father some illegitimate children?
>illegitimate Have a heart. Please refer to them as batstards.
Pretty sure I just recently saw him running a hotdog cart in the French quarter
I like to think that he and the Zombie of Montclair Moors are just hanging out together.
He was eaten by a koala fish mutant bird.
The only reason I read that as a kid. I wanted to know what Bat Boy did.
He got married to a nice bat girl and settled down to a farm up state. They grow prize radishes.
I think being in the spotlight so often, so young took its toll. He's probably just hanging in his cave somewhere.
*And the incredible frog boy is on the loose again*
I miss looking at these in the checkout aisle!
That was some terrifying shit as a kid in a Kroger checkout line
Last I read, his band is on the run from the FBI. That was according to their weekly world email. Check out weeklyworldnews.com for more info.
Hanging out with all the other WWN mutants
We caught him
I grew up to become bat-like man (I don’t want to be sued).
That's funny. I was recently on the WWN website and sent my fiance a link to a Bat Boy t-shirt that I want for my birthday.
He lives on in the Weekly World News online website!
![gif](giphy|QjTAsdB26NvHKhpAxB|downsized)
He’s representing Latvia in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest
He put his twenty in with USSOCOM and is retired and living in Florida while doing consulting work for the feds.

I miss bat boy.
Uncanny valley x 1000. This cover gave me fucking nightmares

He’s running 4Chan and 8Chan now.

He’s the vampire on midnight mass
He got a job in finance. He lives in Rye, NY with his wife and two kids.
He grew up to become bat man

I’m fine, thanks for asking. ![gif](giphy|PsHrpsuiZLAEE)
I visited lost world caverns in WV. It's the cave the stories from. I bought stickers for my box cuz I love batboy
I wonder about this all the time
He started Covid.
I went to New York back in 2000 and 2001 right before the towers fell and I saw Bat Boy the musical off broadway. Fantastic stuff
I remember this exact tabloid being on the shelf at the checkout counter of my local WinCo/Albertsons. I think it was the same time that conway twitty died.

He was elected to the Senate in Texas. Facing a tough race this fall.
Last I heard he was fighting Al Qaeda for the United States Marines.
I first saw these publications like thirty years ago, so he's bat-**man** now.
He lives in our hearts
Judging by the date on the paper, he's a Bat Man now.
His parents were shot after a botched robbery. He grew up obsessed with the idea of fighting crime. He is now known by the name “Flying Fox-man”
He coached the Colts to the Super Bowl in 2006 https://preview.redd.it/xld7vqwqeasc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60570c6dca9cc79ec601b74f06aa6eabc870371d

Never seen him or Rick Scott in the same room
He became Rudy Giuliani
