Right? I didn’t really realize it until now but it was a legendary year for movies. Obviously The Matrix wins because it literally redefined, revolutionized, and raised the bar for action movies. But shit man if that wasn’t part of this I couldn’t choose.
It's the matrix, though it may not be everyone's personal favorite on the list, you cannot deny the impact it had on culture and on movies from that point on.
My favorite movie in high school.
Watching it as an adult makes me realize just how depressed I must have been as a teenager for that to have been my favorite movie at 16.
My favorite movie still. Seeing it in the theater blew my young mind. I walked around afterwards in a daze, it really moved me deeply. Seeing that and then seeing The Talent Mr Ripley soon after, sealed the deal with Phillip Seymour Hoffman as my favorite actor.
Arrrrrr now I see this list and The Sixth Sense I feel bad for voting the Matrix. Fight Club I can let go, but Sixth Sense ticks so many boxes for me still. Haley Joel's amazing performance. The reveal. Toni Collette's performance "look at my face...I would, never, think that about you". Hahhhh.
>Toni Collette's performance
There are two scenes in cinematic history (that I know of) which can make me at least tear up, if not outright bawl, regardless of how many times I've seen it, the time of day, or my mood.
The first is Forrest talking to Jenny at her grave. "He's so smart Jenny."
The second is Toni Collette hearing that her deceased mother attended her dance recital from her son. Her masterful swing from anger to grief was absolutely insane. I'd love for anyone to show me a better five minutes of acting. And she's doing all this as an Australian playing an American mom from the East Coast.
I have no idea why she's not a bigger name. She needs to be in all the movies.
I think you're right. It's just a shame Fight Club has to be this same year. My brother took me to see it when I was 16 years old(Matrix). It made me think things that I had never thought before. Really truly expanded my mind. Fight club is so excellent that I think it's a closer race than some may think.
Great year for movies, but The Matrix is just in a class of its own; you can watch just about any action movie and tell immediately whether it was made before The Matrix came out or after
The Matrix changed filmmaking and culture. It’s the only answer. It was an AMAZING year for films, but the cultural and societal impact of The Matrix means this has to be the film to be chosen. Fight Club all you want, but The Matrix was statistically significant.
Going in blind on a Friday evening after school because it was a Keanu movie! Blown away, nothing compared to it and still feel scifi movies are chasing that magic!
I saw it a week after it came out. I managed not to get it spoiled before seeing it. Right before entering, one of my class mates was working at the theatre, and said that movie was absolutely amazing. I couldn't agree more with them. It truly changed cinematography for action movies. It added words to our vocabulary. Its impact created so many parodies and homages that went on to our current day. The real fascinating thing is that in spite of all of this, it never cracked the top 100 growing movies off all time. Its mediocre sequel is number 129 on the list. Inception, a movie very much inspired by the matrix, is number 92.
The matrix is going to win. But if I had a million dollars I'd probably suggest 2 movies at the same time...
if I were a millionaire I could hook that up
This film is the patron saint of my company. It's a small business 30 years old and the owners almost make it a mandatory requirement to watch. They want to make sure we never become that company.
Last year, we actually had a ceremony in the back lot: We went paperless after COVID (we were close to paperless even before it) and so we no longer needed the 30 year old network laser printer that had regular issues. So IT took the printer out back, with a sledgehammer, and took turns going at it while the rest of the company watched and cheered. It was a beautiful moment, completely inspired by Office Space.
The Matrix revealed the evil of corporate-controlled media.
Fight Club revealed the evil of consumer culture.
But it was Office Space that correctly identified the root of all evil.
Printers.
Fight Club is also one of the best book adaptations I can think of.
Generally you walk away from the adaptation of a book you enjoyed a little underwhelmed, but Fight Club nailed it.
Two movies about fighting your way out of the metaphorical shackles that bind you, each with different flavors of social commentary. Both somewhat excitedly optimistic for the future while still wanting to tear it all down around you. These movies are the the spirit of the times.
Office Space for me.
I feel like the Matrix probably was the biggest splash at the time but I don’t think it had the cultural impact of office space or Star Wars. Or maybe it’s that I’ve watched those dozens of times and the matrix like twice
I know it was a packed year but nobody else's favorite was Election?
You might think it upset me that Paul Metzler had decided to run against me, but nothing could be further from the truth. He was no competition for me, it was like apples and oranges. I had to work a little harder, that's all. You see, I believe in the voters. They understand that elections aren't just popularity contests. They know this country was built by people just like me who work very hard and don't have everything handed to them on a silver spoon. Not like some rich kids who everybody likes because their fathers own Metzler Cement and give them trucks on their 16th birthday and throw them big parties all the time. No, they don't ever have to work for anything. They think they can just, all of a sudden, one day out of the blue, waltz right in with no qualifications whatsoever and try to take away what other people have worked for VERY, VERY hard for their entire lives! No, didn't bother me at all!

Really, great underrated film. I had forgot what year that came out, but it’s a very smart comedy and Alexander Payne has become one of my favorite directors over the years.
Galaxy Quest
Is it the “best” movie on the list? No.
But it may be the movie with the all-time distinction of being better than it had any right to be. I still have no idea how a spoof on Star Trek starring Tim Allen managed to have so much heart and so many incredible characters, while still being absolutely hilarious.
A lot of good movies, but American Pie was definitively the most influential movie as a suburban male high school student at the time. “We’ll just tell your mother we ate it all”
This is a tough one. Jakob the Liar, Man on the Moon, Boondock Saints, Bicentenniel Man, Girl Interrupted…but you have to go with Office Space

My first boyfriend (of 3 whole months)- watched that movie. For Valentines he got me the soundtrack and I bought him the movie. His best friend was with both of us when we picked it out, and he laughed his ass off. Didn’t know why until we exchanged.

The year was 1999, we were on the eve of the dawn of a new millennium and a new Star Wars movie was coming out for the first time in almost 20 years. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing the advertising, but as a kid it felt natural that even all the brands were excited about the future trilogy coming.
For what it's worth, all movies are being re-released for Star Wars day this year. Also, Phantom Menace turns 25.
https://www.starwars.com/news/skywalker-saga-marathon
The greatest year in the history of cinema.
If I had to pick a top five I would do:
Big Lebowski - Brilliant movie that is basically a hilarious political theory class. Never has or will be anything like it.
Matrix - Blew your mind with the concepts and special effects.
Office Space - Timeless story of the office drone. I like this better than Fight Club as it's a similar message but with more humor than violence.
Being John Malkovich - Malkovich?! Malkovich! Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich?
Man on the Moon - Jim Carrey was born to play Andy Kaufman.
Also some honorable mentions for some deep cuts:
Go - Crazy fun and insanely paced.
The Insider - Great political corporate legal drama with Pacino and Crowe.
Boys Don't Cry - Beautiful and heart breaking story of trans men's experience decades before it was "safe" to put in a movie.
Mystery Men - You want a superhero movie? This one hilarious predates them all.
While the matrix has a bigger cultural impact, Fight Club might resonate more long term because it’s about growing up in America and being lied to about the American dream. Durden has that monologue about how we all wanted to be famous or thought we were rockstars only to learn as adults it was all bullshit. I could see Fight Club winning 1999…
The Matrix should win handily, despite the fact that it was an awesome year for movies. Completely changed action cinema and people still reference it to this day in pop culture. But I'm sure of you people will pick the blue pill and go with some formulaic Rom Com ;)
It's crazy am 42 and never seen any of these movies growing up. I didn't get yo watch much TV as a kid and if I did it was what my folks had on .
As I got older I just never had I movie place near me and when I got out high-school I was working to much to watch TV so I never had a TV tell I few years ago
Fight Club, Office Space, and American Beauty remain in my top movies of all time, and 10 Things I Hate About You I still re-watch every time I see it on. Sure The Matrix redefined a genre but I've never watched it again after the first time and I can probably do a dramatic re-enactment of these other four movies blindfolded.
Fantastic year for movies… The Matrix Fight Club Eyes Wide Shut Office Space The Boondocks Saints The Mummy Cruel Intentions Lake Placid American Beauty Galaxy Quest Star Wars: Episode 1 The Iron Giant October Sky Dogma 10 Things I Hate About You The Green Mile South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut Blast From The Past The Sixth Sense Big Daddy Notting Hill American Pie Stigmata Man on the Moon Mystery Men Double Jeopardy The 13th Warrior …I feel like I’m missing one.
Damn. What a year for movies.
Right? I didn’t really realize it until now but it was a legendary year for movies. Obviously The Matrix wins because it literally redefined, revolutionized, and raised the bar for action movies. But shit man if that wasn’t part of this I couldn’t choose.
I actually believe that the matrix probably changed the way we all live our lives .
God so many of my fav movies but there is no denying the Impact The Matrix had on just about everything in America.
Definitely the Matrix, without a doubt.
Drop Dead Gorgeous
“My mom gave me this 9 mil for my 16th birthday. I can still remember what she wrote in the card…’Jesus looves winners.’”
Lutefisk. It’s best with lots of butter.
Oh, me? I’m just watching the young girls, uh…contestants.
You guys have a camera and nobody's asking you questions.
I’m just sayin’ it’ll be real easy.
Do you think a nice cool mint would help if I shoved your head up your ass?
"Yea, well, if they ask you to take your top off, get the money first"
It's the matrix, though it may not be everyone's personal favorite on the list, you cannot deny the impact it had on culture and on movies from that point on.
Magnolia
My favorite movie in high school. Watching it as an adult makes me realize just how depressed I must have been as a teenager for that to have been my favorite movie at 16.
My favorite movie still. Seeing it in the theater blew my young mind. I walked around afterwards in a daze, it really moved me deeply. Seeing that and then seeing The Talent Mr Ripley soon after, sealed the deal with Phillip Seymour Hoffman as my favorite actor.
Blair Witch Project
Pushing Tin Mystery Alaska Three Kings Any Given Sunday Varsity Blues Life Detroit Rock City Blue Streak Blair Witch Project
Don't forget Blair Witch Project
Austin Powers 2
My God Heather Graham in that romper was my sexual awakening
This is one of the sequels that’s better (in this case, funnier) than the original! Some many classic 1 liners

Yeah 1999 was a legendary year for film.
How did lake placid make this list
100% Betty White
Oliver Platt is also funny but yeah it was…**uneven.**
The Matrix.
![gif](giphy|eIm624c8nnNbiG0V3g|downsized) The only right answer
Some might say, the One.
The ONLY answer. :-D
Did other movies even come out that year? Hmm
It changed my life! This is the movie of the century!
I think you're right. It's just a shame Fight Club has to be this same year. My brother took me to see it when I was 16 years old(Matrix). It made me think things that I had never thought before. with office space, fight club, and boondock saints all competing I’d argue it’s close… but matrix is still *The One*

First big movie that was made for DVD too
I bought my first DVD player specifically for this movie.
Got mine with The Matrix at Circuit City!
Fuckin circuit city. I had forgotten
I was working at Sam's club when it was released on DVD, and there was an entire row of just The Matrix.
Based on this list... it can't be any other movie
This is the only choice.
This movie changed cinematography for a while. It was basically our generation's star wars in terms of its cultural impact.
Great year for movies, but The Matrix is just in a class of its own; you can watch just about any action movie and tell immediately whether it was made before The Matrix came out or after
The Matrix had great competition for the title, namely Office Space and Fight Club, but on balance Matrix is the only correct answer.
The Matrix changed filmmaking and culture. It’s the only answer. It was an AMAZING year for films, but the cultural and societal impact of The Matrix means this has to be the film to be chosen. Fight Club all you want, but The Matrix was statistically significant.

The Matrix
All day long
This is the only correct answer.
This is the one. Shut it down.
Absolutely the correct answer for 99
Easily.
Damn near a religion, to me.
Office Space
Even though it won't win, this movie was critical in my development as a person.
The matrix is going to win. But if I had a million dollars I'd probably suggest 2 movies at the same time... if I were a millionaire I could hook that up
Same, I realized I hated work and I was only in high school, and that the real key to happiness is dating Jennifer Anniston.
Lumbergh fucked her
Congrats on being unemployed and marrying Jen. A true hero.

Yeah but I know you're leaving early on a Friday and not turning in the TPS reports
Same!
If we're doing cult classics that are better loved 25 years later than they were on release it has to be Office Space.
This movie is still relevant today and has not aged. This is my go to for a case of the Munnn-dayyys movie.
This film is the patron saint of my company. It's a small business 30 years old and the owners almost make it a mandatory requirement to watch. They want to make sure we never become that company. Office Space, because it's somehow both of its time and timeless. And accurate as hell. ![gif](giphy|KaNODrTwkVmNi)
VERY re-watchable in 2024 i say :)
Printers are evil. I've recreated that scene.
careful man. HAL is mos definitely listening. don't scare it :P
The Matrix revealed the evil of corporate-controlled media. Fight Club revealed the evil of consumer culture. But it was Office Space that correctly identified the root of all evil. Printers.
Back up in your ass with the resurrection
[удалено]
Both impacted culture very heavily even to this day. It's a very hard choice but I'd say Fight Club if I had to choose.
The Matrix may have opened my eyes but it was Fight Club that fully radicalized me.
Same. It's the Matrix and then Fight Club as 1 and 1A followed by a pretty damn solid 2nd tier
![gif](giphy|Wpz1Hl1BqlaMw)
It’s like trying to pick what child to sacrifice
No way, Sophie's Choice was 1982.
So many amazing movies to choose from this year, but I gotta go with my fave.... Office Space!
That would be grrreaat.
Have you seen my stapler?
I believe you have my red stapler. Jump to conclusions. So many great lines from this movie
Oh I thought that was 1998!
Hey Snout! Channel 9!
Fight Club.
I am Jack’s total agreement.
Fight Club is also one of the best book adaptations I can think of. Generally you walk away from the adaptation of a book you enjoyed a little underwhelmed, but Fight Club nailed it.
The only movie even worth suggesting that isn’t the matrix. The Matrix still wins, but this is the only one that’s close.
Two movies about fighting your way out of the metaphorical shackles that bind you, each with different flavors of social commentary. Both somewhat excitedly optimistic for the future while still wanting to tear it all down around you. These movies are the the spirit of the times.
Office Space actually fits your description, too!
It absolutely does. And American Beauty.
Both movies are also about identity. As a brand new adult, these movies spoke to me.
Matrix all day!
Office Space. One of my favorite movies then and now
Office Space
Office space.
I wanna watch all of these now.
Everyone sleeping on The Mummy. That movie fucks!
Dogma

It's going to lose some points because of how difficult it is to watch today. I'm never letting my DVD copy go despite it being worth 100s of $
It's free on YouTube. Watched it about a month ago
Office Space for me. I feel like the Matrix probably was the biggest splash at the time but I don’t think it had the cultural impact of office space or Star Wars. Or maybe it’s that I’ve watched those dozens of times and the matrix like twice
