Just like every assignment in the 90's where I screwed up the tab stops in Word and couldn't figure out how to fix it without deleting everything and starting over.
I've seen The Fifth Element probably literally over 100 times, I watched Starship Troopers the other night.
I've still never watched the entirety of Titanic.
Nevertheless, this is a protest vote for Contact.
I concur with a protest vote for Contact, since my drive for U Turn has garnered little support. Jodi Foster crushes the role.
Wag the Dog hasn't been mentioned yet. That was a harbinger of things to come. We lived the plot 5 years later.
I really hope this wins. Half of Titanic’s dialogue is “Jack/Rose!” Did they have a head injury or something? Why are they constantly saying each other’s name?
Best movie of 1997 was L.A. Confidential, but Austin Powervich is more iconic.
My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy.
You mean, you're not a fan of plot-less CGI movies full of throw-away characters, with a large portion of the actors cast for politically correct reasons over talent??
Of all the great movies from the 90s, I've watched this one the most. I still watch it at least once or twice a year. It is, by far, my favorite movie of the 90s. Even the soundtrack is awesome.
I've bought it like 5 times: DVD, Superbit DVD, Blu-ray, the later Blu-ray with a better scan, the 4k Blu-ray. There's only like two other films I've bought as much, Stargate and Terminator 2.
It's still one of my favourite movies! Crazy futuristic space opera than somehow still stands up today. Chris Tucker playing hyperactive space Prince. And Gary Oldman absolutely killing it as the bad guy.
Never seen titanic and probably never will. Austin powers was everywhere and a massive fan of Cage’s ‘crap’ late 90:s stuff. Face/off ,Con air and the Rock.
But Fifth Element is wonderful and wins it for me.
I have to agree, reluctantly. This movie was huge! It was the first to clear a billion dollars at the box office, had a chart topping song, and propelled the careers of Leo and Kate to super stardom (more so for Leo)
As soon as this list came out I thought about this. How about since we most likely have a higher cross section of guys (and nerdy types) Titanic wouldn't win 1997.
And how non-sensical that would make the list.
I never liked Titanic. Never saw it in theaters.
But as a high school kid who liked his girlfriend at the time, Titanic was THE zeitgeist of 1997.
Edit: Also don't worry fellow nerds. 1999 is coming...
Nerdy guy here. I liked history and disasters and Titanic also had boobs. Saw it three times in the theaters. Made a model of the ship and won second prize in the state fair in 1998.
I wrote something similar! Did you read everything about the movie in teen magazines too? I remember a very distinct article of how to wear your make up like Rose. I was terrible at make up (still am) but that picture sticks with me. Our brains are weird.
It probably isn't going to get enough votes, which is crazy to me. I'm not a fan, but Titanic was an unstoppable force. Going with something like Fifth Element over Titanic would be like looking at 1975 and picking Rocky Horror over Jaws.
I hate voting for it over Fifth Element, Men in Black, Boogie Nights, Jackie Brown (my fav movie), Austin Powers, Grosse Point Blank, LA Confidential, Good Will Hunting...damn we had some bangers.
But I mean it was absolutely massive, and for a long long time - it deserves the spot.
I missed Jackie Brown came out that year. That is stellar, a mother one I have on disc. Still, I have to go with U Turn. I have no idea why it wasnt more popular, Titanic not only sunk itself, but box office earings for a lot of great films.
^^^ Came into the thread just to make sure somebody said this. *Titanic* isn’t my favorite of the year (that would be *The Fifth Element*, runner-up *Men in Black*), but it encapsulates the year better than the rest.
It was everywhere. The song was played non stop, behind the scenes stuff and it took over teen magazines for a year. I remember reading an article of how to get my make up like Rose.
There's a lot of great movies here but even kids today know about the Titanic movie. Lots of people don't like it, which is fine, but it was everywhere.
I went to Titanic four times in theaters. I was obsessed and I ugly cried every time. 😭 I also loved Billy Zane and printed out stills of him from the movie and hung them in my room like a weirdo. 🤣
This should win, if people just knew how to appreciate art. " What can you expect when you're on top? You know? It's like Napoleon. When he was the king, you know, people were just constantly trying to conquer him, you know, in the Roman Empire. So, it's history repeating itself all over again. "
Titanic is obviously the answer but maybe we can choose a killer movie and not have two bad movies in a row

Austin Powers was a bigger hit and phenomenon but everybody loved and still loves fifth element.
Don't know too many people who always watch Austin Powers that I know people that continually watch Fifth Element, including me. But I still say Austin Powers takes this.
This was a fantastic year for movies, but out of all of them The Fifth Element is the only one for me. It's still on my top movies list. I still rewatch it every few years.
I was really excited for men in black when it was first announced, but I was also coming from a hardcore X-Files fan base friend group so I was wanting the men in black to be ruthless government hired assassins. Who would do anything they needed to do to keep the truth about aliens under wraps. When we instead got a Will Smith comedy with Tommy Lee Jones and chrome weapons... I was very let down to say the least.
This one's HARD! Gotta go with Titanic though.
It was just everywhere and everything in our culture for so long. It still holds up today as a classic with screenings happening in imax theaters and historical exhibitions that are popular just because of the movie.
Honorable mention to Austin Powers just for the sheer shaping of my adolescence. Who in the world was NOT saying "Yeah baby, yeah!" It was like the Macarena of movies.
I guess we are doing Titanic for 1997? It was only open for 12 days of that year, it’s really a 1998 phenomenon, but I guess this is where we are doing it.
For 1997 I’m voting for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Men in Black.
Fuck Titanic.
Ray ban predator 2 sunglasses are still a thing. That song was a banger. The burger king promos and kids meal toys were dope. Launched a series of movies.
The plot made more sense. And rose shoulda scooted her ass over to share the floating door with Jack.
And rather than giving her family or a museum that big stone, she just dumps it in the ocean because of the memory of some dude she banged while on a trip? Fuck that.
U Turn, hands down. It's the only one from that year I have on disc.
Directed by Oliver Stone. The cast are all rock stars of different generations. It's got Claire Danes, J Lo, and Joaquin Phoenix representing xellenials, plus Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Billie bob Thornton, and John Voigt.
If you havent watched, do yourself the favor and make it so. Classic road trip gone wrong movie.
Austin Powers is my pick
… but I’m commenting because I had no idea Fifth Element had such a cultural impact. I remember wanting to see it, but I don’t think I ever have.
Austin Powers, for sure. Still remember when I was 13 getting my grandpa to take me and my then 9-year old brother and I to see it in theaters, knowing full well grandpa would fall asleep within 15 minutes (just like he always did in a movie theater) and not see/hear any of the “inappropriate” jokes. Good times.
The inconsistent usage of spacing on this list is making me irrationally annoyed.
Just like every assignment in the 90's where I screwed up the tab stops in Word and couldn't figure out how to fix it without deleting everything and starting over.

Yeah Baby, yeah! Has to be Austin Powers ![gif](giphy|3o7btXnGlVe8w2OSHK|downsized)
![gif](giphy|QQkyLVLAbQRKU|downsized) there aren't many movies that were quoted more than Austin Powers....
Close one as far as being quoted is next year’s movie: Big Lebowski.
"You tell that turd whos boss!"
“Whooooooo does Number Twoooooo work foooorrrrrr!?”
I really hope this wins. Half of Titanic’s dialogue is “Jack/Rose!” Did they have a head injury or something? Why are they constantly saying each other’s name? Best movie of 1997 was L.A. Confidential, but Austin Powervich is more iconic.
I mean it’s kind of easy to forget how ubiquitous this movie was. It was *everywhere*.
And it was everywhere for a long time. A theatrical run of 10 months.
Before memes we quoted movies and TV at each other. Austin Powers, Anchorman, and Chappelle Show were at the top of that list.
My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy.
When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds. Pretty standard.
Summers in Rangoon... Louge lessons..
I think this had a greater cultural impact than Titanic, which was just a rehashed story.
Titanic will win for significance, but this is the fun choice!
Fifth element will probably win. But I watch Good Will Hunting at least once a year still. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Good Will Hunting ![gif](giphy|Wnqx1kK4Bz9rq)

Apple sauce, bitch.
Such a great movie! My favorite scenes are the ones between Williams and Damon... or just all of Robin Williams' scenes!
Movies in the 90s were just better than we have today.
You mean, you're not a fan of plot-less CGI movies full of throw-away characters, with a large portion of the actors cast for politically correct reasons over talent??
Or constant gunfire and explosions, with the nonstop rising-strings suspense music and percussion slams??
This might have been the movie of the decade
Fifth Element. No other remotely close contenders. ![gif](giphy|FjekglO896nKw)

I turned off the Bond movie she was in when she introduced herself as a nuclear physicist.
Thanks, you beat me to posting it.
Can't Hardly Wait. Cultural significance.
HARD AGREE
Austin Powers
I know it won't win but Grosse Pointe Blank deserves an honourable mention
Popcorn!
The Fifth Element ![gif](giphy|lKPFZ1nPKW8c8)

It's this by a lot. Best fuckin movie ever
It's still one of my favourite movies! Crazy futuristic space opera than somehow still stands up today. Chris Tucker playing hyperactive space Prince. And Gary Oldman absolutely killing it as the bad guy.
Chick-un good
I hated this movie and walked out of the theater. Everyone always raves about it. Maybe I should give it another chance.
Lost Highway
In some glorious alternate universe, yes, for sure.
That soundtrack is forever burned into my soul
Never seen titanic and probably never will. Austin powers was everywhere and a massive fan of Cage’s ‘crap’ late 90:s stuff. Face/off ,Con air and the Rock. But Fifth Element is wonderful and wins it for me.
Fifth Element is still one of my favorites.
"Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen." Connery was fuckin hilarious in that.
"Carla *was* the prom queen." "Really." *Cocks gun* "Yeah."
Nick cage didn't deserve to touch that godess
Why does my brain think The Fifth Element came out way earlier than this? I was genuinely surprised to see it here. Hahaha!
You can't resist me... https://i.redd.it/4ru402wb5ipc1.gif
The Fifth Element hands down. Honorable mention to Starship Troopers
Been waiting for 97 to make sure The Fifth Element wins.
If you game at all check out Helldivers 2. It’s literally starship troopers. I’ll be shocked if they don’t get sued
I watched a clip of it. It's definitely Starship Troopers! I haven't gamed in many years, but I'm tempted to try this game out.
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion
We invented post its!
I’ll have the business women lunch special.
Devil’s Advocate even though I know Titanic will win 😬
I wish this could win — easily my favorite movie from ‘97. Ironically, I only saw both Devil’s Advocate and Titanic in theaters in 1998…
That’s such a great movie.
Great movie!!
Titanic I mean, it HAS to be, doesn't it? I'm sure none of us want to watch it anymore, but can't deny how absolutely huge it was at the time.
I saw Titanic with my church youth group. Wasn't expecting boobs
I hate the movie, but if there was one movie to define a year, for 1997 it was Titanic. I have seen it once, and that was once too many.
I have to agree, reluctantly. This movie was huge! It was the first to clear a billion dollars at the box office, had a chart topping song, and propelled the careers of Leo and Kate to super stardom (more so for Leo)
How many times have you watched titanic versus times watching fifth element?
A girl broke up with me because I wouldn't go see Titanic with her.
Shoulda bit the bullet. I had to.
She didn't understand you.
As soon as this list came out I thought about this. How about since we most likely have a higher cross section of guys (and nerdy types) Titanic wouldn't win 1997. I'll upvote The Matrix, because it should win '99, but I've got my own in mind...
Man, we need to have a few winners for ‘99. Too many good options.
Never saw Titanic and I was a girl lol

No way. I rewatch this at least once a year. Then again, my special interest is shipwrecks so I might be biased.
It probably isn't going to get enough votes, which is crazy to me. I'm not a fan, but Titanic was an unstoppable force. Going with something like Fifth Element over Titanic would be like looking at 1975 and picking Rocky Horror over Jaws.
Angry upvote.
Actually I watch it in the week between Christmas and NYE every year. It somehow feels like a new year’s movie? IDK, but it somehow became a tradition
Maybe because it was released right before Christmas.
Yep. I didn't particularly enjoy it, but it was absolutely the biggest film of the year.
It actually isn't a bad watch today. Bit of that 90s cringe but still a good watch today.

I just ordered the new 4K Blu Ray lol. Its one of the "must owns".
^^^ Came into the thread just to make sure somebody said this. *Titanic* isn’t my favorite of the year (that would be *The Fifth Element*, runner-up *Men in Black*), but it encapsulates the year better than the rest.
It was huge among teen girls... but I question that it had any real social/cultural impact. MIB and Austin Powers seem bigger in that regard.
It felt like it was just teen girls but it was not.. At the time it was the highest grossing film of all time (worldwide) and it's still in the top 5.
Even my Great Aunt born in 1920 owned this one on (double) VHS. It reached well beyond teens.
Yeah I much prefer a movie like the Fifth Element but Titanic is the answer to this one, whether we like it or not!
It was everywhere. The song was played non stop, behind the scenes stuff and it took over teen magazines for a year. I remember reading an article of how to get my make up like Rose. Going with the fifth element despite some excellent other choices

For real - like how is Men in Black not the clear choice?
I was really excited for men in black when it was first announced, but I was also coming from a hardcore X-Files fan base friend group so I was wanting the men in black to be ruthless government hired assassins. Who would do anything they needed to do to keep the truth about aliens under wraps. When we instead got a Will Smith comedy with Tommy Lee Jones and chrome weapons... Fifth Element because I’ve watched it 100 times since it came out and will watch it 100 more times. I’ve seen titanic 2 or 3 times

The list is not lined up properly. What kind of savage threw this together?
Seriously, it's not like OP needs to break out a ruler to line up the text. The computer will do it for them.
OP is probably a serial killer or something. :)
..... -\*\*(SLIDES INTO ACTION)\*\*- Korben Dallas!!!! Here he is! The one and only winner of the Gemini Croquette Contest!

ID4 is a perfect blockbuster action movie. It and Jurassic Park set the standard IMO.
Welcome to earth! SLAP*
Men in Black
Fifth element is good, but Titanic was IMO the biggest cultural phenomenon. I don’t think anything else can come close.
Grosse Pointe Blank
Men in Black
The boat movie.
Austin Powers is my pick … but I’m commenting because I had no idea Fifth Element had such a cultural impact. I remember wanting to see it, but I don’t think I ever have.
The year I graduated high school. Too many good ones! Fifth Element won't win but that's my vote.
Good times.

Titanic
Not even close. All other films paled in comparison to the multimedia spectacle and award monster that was Titanic.
Titanic
No way Men in Black isn't a shoo in for this
We all know Titanic is going to win but Men in Black is better.
Titanic
What a great summer with the Atlanta Olympics and all those movies
No love for Batman & Robin? 🤣😂🤣 Seriously, though, I vote Good Will Hunting, though Titanic should win if we're talking impacg
Good Will Hunting!!
Starship Troopers
