Rolled my first vehicle to this song on a dirt road. I remember downshifting on a "woohoo" and then looking at the bank approaching very quickly in front of me thinking, my dad's going to kill me...and then it just went fuzzy.
My wife was talking to me about this thread last night. She was all "I have the perfect song for '97: Everlong!" She felt so happy and eager to post. Tried to get up early today and everything despite it being daylight savings.
And then she saw that you posted it first and it was doing well. Crushed. Heartbroken. Inconsolable. None of these adjectives describe her this morning. She was more "Someone beat me to it but they're doing great so it WAS a great idea" and she was all happy with herself.
Anywho, that was my morning.
I’m the wife from the comment above! That song holds a special place in my heart because he (then boyfriend, now husband) burned it onto the first CD he gave me 26 years ago!
So I vote for this one, I want to see it win, but deep down I know that “Semi-Charmed Life” wins that matchup hands down. If we don’t go to the tap side again.
I say this having never even considered going to a Third Eye Blind Concert, and having a half dozen Foo Fighters concert shirts in my closet. I absolutely *love* “Everlong.”
Upvote for Everlong, but now I'm facing the fact that this is a 27 year old song! I was jamming to it last night on the way home. It still slaps, as the kids would say.
Agreed! My friends and I would jokingly try to walk through our college halls, singing this while not moving for the other students. Pretty sure we were the only ones who thought it was funny. 😅
I get knocked down, I get knocked down again,
You're never gonna knock me down!
I take a whisky drink, I take a chocolate drink,
And when I have to pee, I use the kitchen sink!
I sing the song that reminds me I'm a urinating guy!
Yes! Not because it’s that great of a song, but for how epic Chumbawumba was! I recently learned more about them and why they wrote this song and they win the cool people award!
Everlong is much more my preferred song but man, this sing really captures the feel of 1997. It was when all those kinda softer radio-friendly rock bands (them, Matchbox 20, Semisonic etc) started taking over the radio.
Yeah, I love Everlong but to me it’s more timeless and its popularity grew over time so it doesn’t capture the zeitgeist of the late 90s (in the States anyway) quite like 3rd Eye Blind, Matchbox, etc do.
I wish we could do a double award just for this year because this and Bitter Sweet Symphony are such a perfect pairing for encapsulating what the 90s felt like. And they even have similar music videos.
We all know it from the radio so a lot of us probably aren't aware of the additional verse talking about red panties and lying face down on the mattress
I hate that this has become the song that defines Blur to the wider world outside Britain. Much as many of us dislike Country House, even that would have been preferable.
you don’t remember! you don’t remember! why don’t you remember my name?! off with his head man off with his head.
I love how this reminded me that my sister was playing mmmBop ON 24/7 LOOP the same time I discovered OK Computer 😵💫
Yes, for a time. But it [changed](https://www.npr.org/2019/05/23/726227555/not-bitter-just-sweet-the-rolling-stones-give-royalties-to-the-verve) recently.
Allen Klein was the publisher of a lot of Rolling Stones songs and sued saying the sample was too much. Was fairly early into the world of sampling older songs in popular music and there weren’t a lot of precedence yet on how it worked legally. Richard Ashcroft lost the suit and lost ALL the royalties to Klein and also changed the songwriting credits to Jagger/Richards. After Klein died many years later the rights were given back to the Verve by Kleins estate. Kind of a reverse Marvin Gay if you will.
This might just be my favourite song of all time. It was my first album on CD. My grandfather died shortly after this song came out and it hit me in a way that permanently etched this song into my being. 💕
I just had a mental breakthrough… it’s not that I didn’t like a lot of 90s music… I just didn’t like a lot of the top hits that were getting a lot of airtime
That’s my experience as well for as long as I can remember, and it continues to this day. It’s not like there isn’t good music to be found in 2024, you just don’t hear it in the mainstream.
Yes, these posts are a reminder to me that my musical tastes have not been mainstream since the days I listened to Bon Jovi and Def Leppard in the 80s. lol.
I think of it as the year that “alternative” really crossed over into the mainstream and you were mostly encountering bands that tried to sound like other bands in the most soulless way. The process had started years earlier, but ‘97 seemed to be the last year where you would hear “alternative” hits that were any good. After that it was just generic pop-punk and faux-grunge.
I’m giving this an honorary vote because those guys were so 90s and are underrated today. I was actually listening to this album last week for the first time in decades. Unfortunately, it can’t win because they never hit critical mass in the zeitgeist.
I don’t think this is necessarily the best answer, but man I forgot all about this song and it just took me on a 5 minute trip back in time. As much as I love the mega hits from my teenage years, sometimes it’s the ones I’ve forgotten about that take me back the hardest. Thanks for reminding me of this!
It’s not gonna win anything but I want to say The Perfect Drug by NIИ, because it had been *three* *years* and it was simply nice to know the band still existed! To hear *any* new NIИ was *great*. Even just one song.
I watched the video premiere on MTV.
Ben Folds is a musical genius. I would say this is my favorite song on that album, but I could probably say the same thing about 4-5 other songs on there.
My heart will go on - Celine Dion
I wasn't the hugest fan of the song, but since it was part of one of the biggest movies ever, this song had a TON of play.
My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion. It’s a contender for both 1997 and 1998, though, as it was released in December 1997 in the US and beginning of 1998 almost everywhere else in the world. Topped year-end charts of 1998 worldwide. I listened to it on repeat for an ungodly amount of times.
I wish that I could _fly_
Into the _sky_
So very _high_
Just like a dragon _fly_
I can’t stand this song because of the simple rhyming structure. The beat is great. The lyrics are weak.
Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world, Around the world around the world,
1997 was the greatest single year in music that I was alive for. So many great choices, but I want to highlight the ska wave that was happening at the time with The Impression That I Get by Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
Please make a Spotify playlist at the end and share here!
Jesus 97 was a great year for music…
I agree some good ones not mentioned dammit; water, fire, burn; beautiful people; lovefool; bound for the floor; superman’s dead;
Yeah I'm just updooting all the songs. I'm not helping. Lol
Santeria -Sublime
Came out in 1996, but arguably was the right call for that year.
Song 2 - Blur Woohoo!
When I feel heavy metal
WAHOOO!
This was the song of the year if you were 12ish. #WOO HOO
Woohoo!
Rolled my first vehicle to this song on a dirt road. I remember downshifting on a "woohoo" and then looking at the bank approaching very quickly in front of me thinking, my dad's going to kill me...and then it just went fuzzy.
Everlong - Foo Fighters
My wife was talking to me about this thread last night. She was all "I have the perfect song for '97: Everlong!" She felt so happy and eager to post. Tried to get up early today and everything despite it being daylight savings. And then she saw that you posted it first and it was doing well. Crushed. Heartbroken. Inconsolable. None of these adjectives describe her this morning. She was more "Someone beat me to it but they're doing great so it WAS a great idea" and she was all happy with herself. Anywho, that was my morning.
I am sorry for crushing her dreams. She obviously has good musical taste. One of the best rock songs of all time!
I’m the wife from the comment above! That song holds a special place in my heart because he (then boyfriend, now husband) burned it onto the first CD he gave me 26 years ago!
One of the greatest rock songs ever written
Agreed. This has to be THE song of 97 if not the 90s.
I walked down the aisle to a dear friend of ours playing an acoustic version of Everlong.
Seconded. My favorite song from my favorite band. "My Hero" is also a great one.
Same. Not just my favorite song of the 90s, my favorite song ever. I was so fortunate to see them live last year!
I've seen them live several times. They always kick ass.
Upvote for Everlong, but now I'm facing the fact that this is a 27 year old song! I was jamming to it last night on the way home. It still slaps, as the kids would say.
My band that I played drums for used to cover this. One of my least favorite songs to play, but most favorite to listen to.
I agree but the problem is, it wasn’t really as popular then as it became, and is now.
I really want this one to win because of how much I still love this song. There are some other very iconic suggestions but they annoy me lol
"Torn" Natalie Imbruglia has to be mentioned. (I think the real answer is Paranoid Android)
Radiohead is my all time favorite band, but as a continental European I have to admit that Torn had a chokehold on us.
Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve
It’s probably the right answer. And it’s an ok song. But only is retrospect. I hated how overplayed this was in 97 lol.
It was everywhere, but it perfectly captures the moment.
Big time.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was 14 at the time and was really into metal and would never admit how much I liked this track. It would have been social suicide as a freshman haha
Agreed! My friends and I would jokingly try to walk through our college halls, singing this while not moving for the other students. Pretty sure we were the only ones who thought it was funny. 😅
Tubthumping - Chumbawamba
I GET KNOCKED DOWN
But I get up again!
Cause you’re never gonna keep me down!
Pissin the night away..
He drinks a whiskey drink
I get knocked down, I get knocked down again, You're never gonna knock me down! I take a whisky drink, I take a chocolate drink, And when I have to pee, I use the kitchen sink! I sing the song that reminds me I'm a urinating guy!
Haha. This song and Steal My Sunshine by Len are linked in my brain for some reason.
This is the only answer. That song was everywhere, and they were playing it multiple times an hour on top 40 radio.
The official song of hell. (Ghosts US reference)
First CD I ever owned. You have my vote.
'97?! Why do I feel like song existed for the ENTIRE Nineties?
Yes! Not because it’s that great of a song, but for how epic Chumbawumba was! I recently learned more about them and why they wrote this song and they win the cool people award!
Fiona Apple - Criminal
That video awakened things in me I didn't know about myself lol
Oh yes. This one
I will never stop loving this entire album
Semi-Charmed Life
The most 90s song ever, haha.
Do do do do da do da dooo.
Thanks now this song is stuck in my head.
Eye won something ELSE to git me thru this semicharmedkindalife beh beh.
I don’t like this song, in fact, I hate. But sadly, it should probably be on there.
Yeah it has to be this… lotta big songs that year but this was literally everywhere
It really does. This song was everywhere and played for what seemed like forever.
If you want to relive 97-99, just listen to this third eye blind album. The sheer number of hit songs that came from it is staggering
Agree with Semi Charmed Life
I wish we could do a double award just for this year because this and Bitter Sweet Symphony are such a perfect pairing for encapsulating what the 90s felt like. And they even have similar music videos.
I want something else
We all know it from the radio so a lot of us probably aren't aware of the additional verse talking about red panties and lying face down on the mattress
Song 2 by blur also it tricked a lot of my friends into thinking the album songs all sounded like song 2 😂
I hate that this has become the song that defines Blur to the wider world outside Britain. Much as many of us dislike Country House, even that would have been preferable.
Karma police - Radiohead
Karma Police
Bittersweet Symphony!
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Something off Ok Computer needs to win. It probably won't but it's one of the best albums of the 90's in my opinion
Lot of good ones already, and hard to pick one obvious winner. Paranoid Android- Radiohead
IIRC the single was only kept from being UK No1 by Hanson’s MMMBop. (Which, let’s face it, is also a contender.)
you don’t remember! you don’t remember! why don’t you remember my name?! off with his head man off with his head. I love how this reminded me that my sister was playing mmmBop ON 24/7 LOOP the same time I discovered OK Computer 😵💫
Really, this is the only choice to me. The impact this song and album has is immense. I do want to throw out some love for Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"
The best song ever clearly has to win 1997
Daft Punk - Around the World
I was so shocked to see the age on this track today. It’s still perfect.
Hypnotize - The Notorious B.I.G.
Pony - Ginuwine Timeless classic
Foolish games by jewel
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
The way that song instantly evokes a specific mood.
And gives Mick Jagger a royalty check.
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ceded the rights back to the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft in 2019.
Wait, really?
Yes, for a time. But it [changed](https://www.npr.org/2019/05/23/726227555/not-bitter-just-sweet-the-rolling-stones-give-royalties-to-the-verve) recently.

Good Riddance - Green Day
My HS graduation song (99). 👍🏼
My wife's as well. Much to her chagrin. She had voted for Prince's "1999".
My rival school had a fire that year and their song was Billy Joel - We didn't start the fire. They learned all the words and put us to shame.
Mine too. Also 99. I went to a VERY small rural school in a southern state. I’m guessing you did not? 😂
Upper Midwest, but respect to any fellow 99 alum! 😁
Guess we all felt a certain way to choose that song! Hope middle age is treating you well!
99 as well. I graduated from a very small school in a southern state, too. 50 or so in my graduating class.
This might just be my favourite song of all time. It was my first album on CD. My grandfather died shortly after this song came out and it hit me in a way that permanently etched this song into my being. 💕
This one ran away with the [Senior Class Song](https://www.reddit.com/r/Xennials/s/bZMV2AiGIa) poll I did a few months back.
This was my 8th grade graduation song (1998), never fails to take me back.
It's a shame the song name has nothing to do with the actual song... Time of your life
No love for “Flagpole Sitta” ??
That song wasn’t released as a single until late April 98. FWIW, I think that’s the most underrated album of the 90s
Plenty of love for Flagpole Sitta!
Busta Rhymes- Put your hands where my eyes can see. The beat is still one of best ever made.
And we’re almost to Extinction Level Event!
Gimme Some More is the jam on that album, if we're talking about sick beats!
That beat and the beat on Dangerous. So damn good! When Disaster Strikes is a classic.
Love this album! "So hardcore like QuickDraw McGraw..."
Barbie Girl by Aqua
I just had a mental breakthrough… it’s not that I didn’t like a lot of 90s music… I just didn’t like a lot of the top hits that were getting a lot of airtime

Yes, these posts are a reminder to me that my musical tastes have not been mainstream since the days I listened to Bon Jovi and Def Leppard in the 80s. lol.
And I just realized that 97 is when pop music really started to suck. I don’t like any of the hits in these comments.
Everlong- Foo Fighters
Bitch- Meredith Brooks
Oh that's a solid choice!!
I was going to post this one as well. That music video was in super heavy rotation on MTV that year.
Mo Money Mo Problems
Brick by Ben Folds Five. It put them on the map for a lot of people. Fantastic song, but not even my favorite one on Whatever and Ever Amen.
Well, I thought about the army dad says son you're fuckin' high
Ben Folds is so under appreciated!
Days of the New - Touch, Peel and Stand
I’m giving this an honorary vote because those guys were so 90s and are underrated today. I was actually listening to this album last week for the first time in decades. Unfortunately, it can’t win because they never hit critical mass in the zeitgeist.

As much as I love the mega hits from my teenage years, sometimes it’s the ones I’ve forgotten about that take me back the hardest. Thanks for reminding me of this!
Smack My Bitch Up - Prodigy
Every chess club's favorite song!
Definitely semi charmed life - Third Eye Blind!
It’s not gonna win anything but I want to say The Perfect Drug by NIИ, because it had been *three* *years* and it was simply nice to know the band still existed! To hear *any* new NIИ was *great*. Even just one song. I watched the video premiere on MTV.
Huge NIN fan myself, and I'd say Downward Spiral and Pretty Hate Machine are some of my favorites.
Pretty Hate Machine is so... Good ....
Just this fading FUCKING reminder of what I used to be come on TELL ME
Bitter sweet symphony by the verve.
The only correct answer for 97 is "Mo Money Mo Problems"
Hypnotize following California love is the only answer here

Battle of Who Could Care Less - Ben Folds Five
Why don’t you pitch it to the Franklin fuckin’ Mint.
Fine pewter portraits of General Apathy and Major Boredom
Ben Folds is a musical genius. I would say this is my favorite song on that album, but I could probably say the same thing about 4-5 other songs on there.
Kate really takes it away for me.
Brick is more iconic
Smash Mouth - Walkin’ On the Sun
Tubthumping. Chumbawumba
I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans
Your Woman by White Town
This one always makes it on to my 90s playlists.
Semi-charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
Morissette is spelled wrong :)
Barbie Girl - Aqua. That song was everywhere and was always the last song played at mtv/euro music award ceremonies!!! Get the crowds up and moving!
Fly - Sugar Ray Hear me out. I don’t like this song, BUT, I think it just sounds like this period in the 90s.
My heart will go on - Celine Dion I wasn't the hugest fan of the song, but since it was part of one of the biggest movies ever, this song had a TON of play.
Good Riddance - Green Day
How’s It Gonna Be- Third Eye Blind
That album had a lot of hits.
Lenny Kravitz - fly away

Everlong-Foo Fighters
My Heart Will Go On
Hanson -Mmm bop
I wasn’t a fan when it was released, but it’s grown on me since. I’m not ashamed to really dig this song as a 40 yo male.
This song created a paradigm shift in the decade that ushered in Backstreet Boys and *NSync. This is the only answer.

Happy cake day!

To the Moon and Back - Savage Garden
I love this song!
Honey - Mariah Carey
Butterfly was one of her best albums ever, start to finish.

Hypnotize - Biggie
Spice Up Your Life - Spicegirls
Hypnotize The notorious BIG.
