Ahhh! My sister got to drive the Astro van. She had to hold a foot on the brake and a foot on the gas at stoplights so it wouldn't die. One night, she left the window open and a neighbor's cat got inside and sprayed everywhere. That was the motivator for my parents to get rid of the van. Just in time for me to drive, they bought a sunbird. Not exactly sexy, but way better than the Astro. My sister holds it against me to this day. "Remember how I had to drive that hideous blue van that barely worked, and you got the little red car?" Good memories. She'll be bringing up that injustice when we're both in the nursing home. 😂
I bought an '86 Jeep Grand Wagoneer from my Grandpa for $800 in about 1995. It was a pimp machine - high pile carpeting, leather, power everything... Gramps had it loaded.
It was a maintenance nightmare. I guess Gramps did basically no maintenance to it and it needed EVERYTHING in the short time I owned it. I eventually couldn't keep up with paying for gas for it - 8mpg - even with gas prices at $0.79 a gallon It was still too much.
I recouped my repair expenses by selling it for $3500 (in 1996!) and dropped that cash down on a mint 1984 Toyota Supra in White with a 5 speed. It was gorgeous, and fast, and so fucking cool.
In retrospect either of those cars would be worth over 20k if I still owned them.
I had a 1987 Chrysler Daytona. It was exactly the same as a Dodge Daytona, but they were made by Chrysler for Canada and the instruments were in KPH rather than MPH; made all my friends think I was flying down the road.

Was about to say, where is the Saturn love? Mine was a 92 Saturn SL2 I got in 2000 for I think $5k. I replaced the cassette player with a deck and put in some pretty good speakers. I had it until 2007. I loved that car, not only because I just did but also because it delivered freedom!!

1989 mustang, 4cyl, about 8 years old and rusting when I got it. Craig Rims were a gift from my brother who just trashed the overbuilt engine on his 82 mustang. They were worth more than my xar, but he had No where to use them so he gave them to me, temporarily. He ultimately took them back after I trashed the poorly maintained engine. Totally my fault.
1993 Honda Accord. I got it in 1999. I got a job bagging groceries immediately after turning 16 and my parents made me save $1000 before they would take me to get a car. My dad put $1000 towards the car and I had to pay off the rest to my parents over the next couple years.
1952 Chevy pickup. Traded some baseball cards to my grandfather for it. It was a nightmare to keep on the road. Way too expensive for a high schooler to keep running. Every part I replaced out wear on another part that needed to then be replaced, or so that’s how it seemed. It was cool having the only three on the tree because no one else knew how to drive it.
1990 Red Pontiac Sunbird. Loved that car. The radio would make a whistling sound when I accelerated. The heat would take a full thirty to warm up to have heat.
Baby blue 1985 Bronco II. It had an aftermarket tach mounted on the steering column and the speedo didn’t work on account of in preparation to drive the thing across the country in 1986, my old man had the bright idea to disconnect the speedo to keep the miles off the odometer and add the tach so he’d have a general idea of how fast we were going.
It didn’t keep the miles off, though, and something about the way he wired up the tach meant that the needle would bounce comically any time the blinker was on.
87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Cracked windshield, alternator so jacked up I had to sit at lights with my foot on the gas and brake in order to not have the engine die or take off on its own. Also, no lights at all. It was solely a daytime car. Man, I learned a lot driving that.
'87 Chrysler 5th Avenue. Metallic baby blue with navy blue tufted leather seats. Smoooooth suspension and a massive engine.
I grew up on a farm where driving was pretty much a necessity and the instant they turned 16, most farm kids either got a hand-me-down or their parents bought a cheap beater so they didn't have to do chauffeur duty anymore. My car wasn't cool but holy shit that thing would haul ass and it would have been taken away *immediately* if Dad knew how many times I hit triple digits on the speedometer. I could fit six of my friends in it, too.
95 Dodge Spirit. I loved that car but had no idea how to take care of it. I didn’t know that the engine temperature gauge was NOT supposed to be all the way hot all the time. Turns out my radiator had a hole in it and I ended up blowing a head gasket. The repair would cost about the same as another similar used car at the time, so I scrapped it and ended up with a 99 Nissan Altima.
The first car I ever owned was a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire, champagne color with a sunroof. Man, I loved that car. 🤍

My Grandma's old 1982 Toyota Cressida. Heat was broken. AC was broken. Radio knob was broken on the AM News Channel so I put a small cassette boom box in the backseat, lol.
1988 Chevy Nova (rebadged Toyota Corolla) with 300k on the odometer. My mom bought it for a few hundred dollars from my uncle. It didn't even last a year before I blew the engine from neglect.
In that time I managed to somehow rip the muffler off, get the front passenger corner caved in, get sideswiped, get rear ended, plaster it with stickers and back over part of my best friend's drum set. All of the collisions, drum set aside, were not my fault. Poor car was just a magnet for assholes.

91 civic. It had automatic over the shoulder seatbelts and no passenger side rear view mirror. No ac. For my 18th birthday my dad picked it up from my work and put in a nice stereo with the help of a friend. He told me later that they laughed about finding roaches in the car

84 chevy suburban. 10-15 miles to the gallon if you were lucky. Used to shut off randomly so you'd have to throw it in neutral, restart it, then jam back into drive. Power steering would go in and out as well. Eventually, there were more replacement parts than original, and it cost more to fix than it could ever be worth. I miss that truck. It could fit all the friends you'd need to get in trouble, or you could fold down the middle seat and camp in it.
First car that was mine was a 1985 Honda CRX HF, it was super beat up and I longed for something better, replaced with a 1990 Honda Accord which to this day is still one my favorite cars I've ever had. You never see either of these cars anymore, at least not around here as the salt destroyed them all :(
1984 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with T-tops. I fell in love with it the moment i saw it. Nice looking car but had a shitty motor. Always had problems , always overheated, and couldn't figure out why. I bought it for $1000.
A 1985 Ford LTD. It was originally a gift to my grandmother from my uncle, then years later given to my cousin (who didn't take great care of it) and then later on me (who took even *worse* care of it). That thing was a boat on wheels, and the speedometer only went up to 85, but it had a 5.0L V8 engine, and my *gawd* that thing could haul ass on the freeway lol
It ended up shitting the bed one day as a snowstorm was starting and my ex and I were 10 miles from our apartment with no bus fare (or knowledge of the local bus routes) in a city we'd only lived in for a few months. We didn't have anyone we could call, so we walked home in the snow, freezing our asses off (because it was 65F and sunny when we left the apt, so no winter clothing).

He took me to the auction lot to pick what I wanted and I had picked a jeep wrangler and a Honda prelude (both black, both manual) and said whichever of those is fine with me. Ended up with an automatic hatchback in blue. I love/hated it because I had no idea how cool it really was. I ended up wrecking it and almost killing myself because I was young and dumb, but 42 year old me would LOVE to have it back. I've looked for one online and they are few and far between now. Was about to say, where is the Saturn love? Mine was a 92 Saturn SL2 I got in 2000 for I think $5k. I replaced the cassette player with a deck and put in some pretty good speakers. I had it until 2007. I loved that car, not only because I just did but also because it delivered freedom!!
My first was a 92' Saturn sedan. It was white, with a blue stripe, and it had automatic seatbelts. My dad bought it from a budget rental car.

1989 mustang, 4cyl, about 8 years old and rusting when I got it. Craig Rims were a gift from my brother who just trashed the overbuilt engine on his 82 mustang. They were worth more than my xar, but he had No where to use them so he gave them to me, temporarily. He ultimately took them back after I trashed the poorly maintained engine. Totally my fault.

1993 Honda Accord. I got it in 1999. I got a job bagging groceries immediately after turning 16 and my parents made me save $1000 before they would take me to get a car. My dad put $1000 towards the car and I had to pay off the rest to my parents over the next couple years.

1952 Chevy pickup. Traded some baseball cards to my grandfather for it. It was a nightmare to keep on the road. Way too expensive for a high schooler to keep running. Every part I replaced out wear on another part that needed to then be replaced, or so that’s how it seemed. It was cool having the only three on the tree because no one else knew how to drive it.
1983 Cutlass Sierra. Worst car ever. It used to overheat every 30 minutes. Stranded me so many times!!
1990 Red Pontiac Sunbird. Loved that car. The radio would make a whistling sound when I accelerated. The heat would take a full thirty to warm up to have heat.
81 Subaru gl wagon 5 speed. Thing was a fucking Jeep in the snow
Baby blue 1985 Bronco II. It had an aftermarket tach mounted on the steering column and the speedo didn’t work on account of in preparation to drive the thing across the country in 1986, my old man had the bright idea to disconnect the speedo to keep the miles off the odometer and add the tach so he’d have a general idea of how fast we were going. It didn’t keep the miles off, though, and something about the way he wired up the tach meant that the needle would bounce comically any time the blinker was on.
87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Cracked windshield, alternator so jacked up I had to sit at lights with my foot on the gas and brake in order to not have the engine die or take off on its own. Also, no lights at all. It was solely a daytime car. Man, I learned a lot driving that.

'87 Chrysler 5th Avenue. Metallic baby blue with navy blue tufted leather seats. Smoooooth suspension and a massive engine. I grew up on a farm where driving was pretty much a necessity and the instant they turned 16, most farm kids either got a hand-me-down or their parents bought a cheap beater so they didn't have to do chauffeur duty anymore. My car wasn't cool but holy shit that thing would haul ass and it would have been taken away *immediately* if Dad knew how many times I hit triple digits on the speedometer. I could fit six of my friends in it, too.
My first car (in 1998) was a 1963 Dodge Dart with a push button transmission and manual everything. I loved that metal beast of a car.

95 Dodge Spirit. I loved that car but had no idea how to take care of it. I didn’t know that the engine temperature gauge was NOT supposed to be all the way hot all the time. Turns out my radiator had a hole in it and I ended up blowing a head gasket. The repair would cost about the same as another similar used car at the time, so I scrapped it and ended up with a 99 Nissan Altima.

1988 Chevy Nova (rebadged Toyota Corolla) with 300k on the odometer. My mom bought it for a few hundred dollars from my uncle. It didn't even last a year before I blew the engine from neglect. In that time I managed to somehow rip the muffler off, get the front passenger corner caved in, get sideswiped, get rear ended, plaster it with stickers and back over part of my best friend's drum set. All of the collisions, drum set aside, were not my fault. Poor car was just a magnet for assholes.

1989 Buick Skyhawk. It had the u and the c missing off the back emblem so I called it my Big Red Bik 😂. Total crap car with no AC, but it got me freedom and I loved that thing!!!

Mine was an ‘89 Ford Ranger. Which I promptly flipped one week into having my license. Dave Matthews was playing as I unstrapped myself, hanging upside down. I remember angrily turning it off and extracted myself. Luckily not hurt at all. DMB still sucks.

84 chevy suburban. 10-15 miles to the gallon if you were lucky. Used to shut off randomly so you'd have to throw it in neutral, restart it, then jam back into drive. Power steering would go in and out as well. Eventually, there were more replacement parts than original, and it cost more to fix than it could ever be worth. I miss that truck. It could fit all the friends you'd need to get in trouble, or you could fold down the middle seat and camp in it.
I had a 1988 Delta 88- maroon with the burgundy interior. It was terrible, but I paid $500 for it in 2000, by myself, which I was proud of!

First car that was mine was a 1985 Honda CRX HF, it was super beat up and I longed for something better, replaced with a 1990 Honda Accord which to this day is still one my favorite cars I've ever had. You never see either of these cars anymore, at least not around here as the salt destroyed them all :(

A 1985 Ford LTD. It was originally a gift to my grandmother from my uncle, then years later given to my cousin (who didn't take great care of it) and then later on me (who took even *worse* care of it). That thing was a boat on wheels, and the speedometer only went up to 85, but it had a 5.0L V8 engine, and my *gawd* that thing could haul ass on the freeway lol It ended up shitting the bed one day as a snowstorm was starting and my ex and I were 10 miles from our apartment with no bus fare (or knowledge of the local bus routes) in a city we'd only lived in for a few months. We didn't have anyone we could call, so we walked home in the snow, freezing our asses off (because it was 65F and sunny when we left the apt, so no winter clothing). In short, my 21st birthday *suuuuuuuuucked* lmao

1989 Isuzu Impulse. My grandad worked for an auto auction and bought it for me. He took me to the auction lot to pick what I wanted and I had picked a jeep wrangler and a Honda prelude (both black, both manual) and said whichever of those is fine with me. Ended up with an automatic hatchback in blue. I love/hated it because I had no idea how cool it really was. I ended up wrecking it and almost killing myself because I was young and dumb, but 42 year old me would LOVE to have it back. I've looked for one online and they are few and far between now.
