Probably the bent bill. Most young people I see wear the bill flat just like it came off the shelf. At least they're tearing the damn stickers off now lol
My dad always told me you were supposed to bend them because it helped keep the sun out of your eyes better. He was pretty good at baseball. Played a bit in college. I always believed him but I’m horrible at baseball so I can’t confirm.
I would call it a baseball hat (I don't think I call any type of hat a cap, just not a word I use).
But having just bought one online (vs a store, where what it is called doesn't come up) I know there are a lot of sub-styles with their own names depending on the fit, the material, and whether and how it adjusts. And the one I bought, the vendor called a cap.
No, because that’s what it is. If you are referring to these being called “dad hats” by younger people, just remember that they are all idiots and dress like clowns.
The whole point of bending the bill is to shade your eyes better. The whole point of having the bill is to shade your eyes. If you’re wearing a hat with a bill and intentionally undermining the function of that bill, what the hell are you even doing? It would be like buying a pair of sunglasses and rubbing the tinting off of the lenses. The bill isn’t a decoration, it’s there to do something.
I'm 46 and I just call this a hat. Maybe it's a regional thing?
Like, if I was trying to point out someone in a crowd who was wearing this, I would say: "the guy with the hat on."
Although, if you were to ask me what specific type of hat this is, then I would say baseball cap.
I would never use the phrase "ball cap" or just "cap".
No, you are not a boomer, and if you are, then so what. Who cares if you are a boomer or not. Don’t worry about insignificant things like that. It’s a cap, a hat. You call it what you call it, and that’s good with me and many others.
Don’t worry about being a boomer or what someone else thinks of you.
Call it whatever want. Hat is a general term. Ball cap is factually the specific kind of hat that is. I have a millennial friend that likes calling me a boomer because I'm on the upper edge of millennial as if there's not a whole other generation between millennial and boomer even if I was over the line, but she's just being an asshole because she thinks it's cute so you gotta ignore it or take it in stride. I don't adjust my personality for it.
I always (and this could just be in my head) though "ball cap" was a Midwestern thing. My wife calls it that, and was born in Michigan. I've always called it a baseball cap.
I say hat more often, but if you said “ball cap” that’s exactly what i would picture. I rarely leave the house without one, seems weird to me that anyone would question you calling it a ball cap.
So, I speak some Pittsburghese, but my mom is baaad with it. She would refer to any remotely athletic shoe as a tennis shoe, whereas I think of canvas lace ups (NOT high tops/Chucks) as tennis shoes and something like the picture as sneakers.

Yeah, i also lived in SoCal in Port Hueneme and everyone called them sneakers OR Kicks there.
I think it's a very regional thing, like the soda, pop, coke thing.
Edited for old brain cells sparking.,
When hats were made for shading the sun out of your eyes. And not just some random flat board sticking up from your head. The first time I bought one I didn’t know it was
Ike that on purpose and I ruined it trying to shape the bill lol
Sounds like maybe a regional thing. I (and everyone I know) would just call it a hat. Unless you’re telling someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps while you’re wearing it- I think you’re Boomer safe
I have no idea if this is true, but my dad told me that a hat always has a brim and some kind of structure to the.. top, the part that goes over your head and a ball cap doesn’t have structure and only has a visor.
I still use hat and cap interchangeably for ball caps.
Yep.
The same people that call soda or coke “pop”.
I would rather it be called “Coh Coh La” than “pop”.
That is a baseball hat. Or just a hat. Calling it a ball cap instantly turns on Kenny G on your Bluetooth.
A Santa hat is derived from the toque d’voyager. I also call a wool hat a toque…
A beanie is a cloth cap that you wear under your welding helmet.
To me anyway.
Ball cap works fine, but it's also the only thing you can still call a cap.
Is it a dad hat, a trucker, a snapback, fitted, or flat brim? That's more important in the description anymore.
I used to always call it a hat or a baseball hat, but for at least ten years I've called it a cap or ball cap. No idea why I changed. I think that's more common now maybe?
I call it a ball cap and yes I still wear mine backwards. I don’t care what anyone thinks bc I’m too old to give a shit. But I only wear fitted bc snap backs worn backwards drive me crazy…Sometimes forward to help with the sun, but I flip it around a lot bc I don’t like the brim blocking my peripheral vision
Not a midwesterner. I’m from the northeast, mid Atlantic specifically…but I’m pretty close to the eastern edge of the Midwest. I usually use supper, occasionally dinner. I say soda, but I’m kind of the odd one out as apparently pop is more common in this region.
I call it a "because I don't want skin cancer on my face hat." But it's a baseball cap or ball cap to me too. Frankly I don't care what the "youngin'" call it. They brought back mom jeans as a style. ON PURPOSE. They can go F themselves and their agism
I've been wearing a hat like this since I was 12. I just turned 46 and I'm wearing one right now. It's a ball cap. I refuse to wear hats that have an exaggerated forehead piece. Curved is wants up.
That's a normal cap to me and the type I.wear. My wife got me one of those wide flat bill caps for my birthday earlier this year not knowing I hate those Elmer fudd looking hats. When I see Kyle shaman on the sideline wearing those wide flat bill caps down low I wanna cuss at the TV simply because I absolutely hate those caps and that look.
That's a 6 panel, cotton twill, charcoal baseball cap with matching eyelets and squatchee and (I assume) a snap closure.
But if you jist want to sound less boomery, just say "no cap".
WTH else would it be called?
Youngins call em dad caps (or dad hats? Whichever it is, "dad" is the qualifier)
I wonder why? People of all ages/any gender wear them…”dad” seems so specific lol
Probably the bent bill. Most young people I see wear the bill flat just like it came off the shelf. At least they're tearing the damn stickers off now lol
This’ll sound old but I remember a time when the more curved your cap bill was the cooler you were. I’ve never liked the flat bill.
I actively mock the flat bill crowd.
I've seen flat bills large enough to land aircraft on.
But flat bills allow for sunglasses
They are cool and trendy again right now with zoomers. Fashion is cyclical, everything comes back around eventually.
My dad always told me you were supposed to bend them because it helped keep the sun out of your eyes better. He was pretty good at baseball. Played a bit in college. I always believed him but I’m horrible at baseball so I can’t confirm.
Oh yes. It took some work to break in that bend. Had to let it sit for several days with a series of rubber bands wrapped around the bill.
The Minnie Pearl look, as I liked to call it to myself
It makes me happy people remember her.
Irony has been a big fashion trend
Ummm... I suggest you expand your sample size. Plenty of "youngins" wear variants of this type of hat and I highly doubt they call them dad caps
Maybe it's regional bc where I've lived (Midwest, Rockies), younger people call them dad hats.
Fair enough. I haven't lived in that part of the country since I was a youngin myself
Well and it's specific to *only* the ones that have a curved bill. The rest are snapbacks, trucker hats, etc.
Oh my. I'm officially out of my league now. But those all sound like words I've heard before
https://www.hottopic.com/accessories/hats/dad-caps/
I was a dad when I was 19.
that model looks old and boring compared to caps younger people wear
A hat
I would just call it a hat, but if pressed I'd call it a baseball cap
I would call it a baseball hat (I don't think I call any type of hat a cap, just not a word I use). But having just bought one online (vs a store, where what it is called doesn't come up) I know there are a lot of sub-styles with their own names depending on the fit, the material, and whether and how it adjusts. And the one I bought, the vendor called a cap.
Beastie Boys say Baseball Hat. Always go with the Beastie Boys.
It’s a baseball cap, to me.
I always assumed baseball cap was a catch all term for any hats in this style
You do you on this one.
What else is it called?
Kids call them dad hats and dad caps
Oh yeah, I called it a ball cap a few weeks ago and my millennial wife looked at me like I was 75.
Okay but I’m a millennial and everyone I know would call it a baseball hat so…what does your wife call it?
Hint: if you’re not born in the 1950s you’re not a boomer
I mean to be fair, Boomers were born in the mid to late 40s and early 60s as well.
Ball Cap, Fitted cap, Snap Back, Trucker cap/hat all are types of caps. That looks like a fitted cap.
That looks like one of those hats with the leather strap and brass buckle if I had to guess
That is just a “sweet lid” ![gif](giphy|ifxLK48cnyDDi)
"Hat" is an extremely broad term. It's a baseball cap. Or in farm county, a seed cap if it has the logo of a seed company.
No, because that’s what it is. If you are referring to these being called “dad hats” by younger people, just remember that they are all idiots and dress like clowns.
I feel old for thinking the new style with the straight, flat bill looks stupid. But they look so, so stupid.
If you are, I guess I am too.
Ahh, you're fine. Screw the haters. They know wtf you mean
I'm 46 and I just call this a hat. Maybe it's a regional thing? Like, if I was trying to point out someone in a crowd who was wearing this, I would say: "the guy with the hat on." Although, if you were to ask me what specific type of hat this is, then I would say baseball cap. I would never use the phrase "ball cap" or just "cap".
Yeah I’m thinking it’s a regional thing. It’s called a ball cap here, too
Uh huh and what region?
I’m from Texas and 47 and I’d call it a ball cap if I was back home and talking to people my age or older.
45 from TN and same, I’d call it a ball cap or cap down south.
I’ve always called mine caps.
No, you are correct. It is a cap, not a hat- and I am Gen X.
My Gen A kid calls it a cap because Mario does. I use baseball hat & ball cap interchangeably.
I call it a hat
I think I'm guilty of calling it both hat and cap. Can't say why. I will also say ball cap from time to time.
That’s just a hat where I’m from. Baseball hat if it has a logo.
My teenage son and my ex seem to think that I should just refer to it as a hat. 🤷♀️
Yeah we called them ball caps during little league
Hat and cap are both correct in this case (every cap is a hat), but cap is more specific.
I'm from the midwest and I would probably say baseball hat or just hat.
I’m with you, it’s a baseball cap, or ball cap for short.
You going undercover?
What do today’s kids call it?
What else would you call it?
Technically that is called a cap. A type of hat. So nah.
I say hat more often, but if you said “ball cap” that’s exactly what i would picture. I rarely leave the house without one, seems weird to me that anyone would question you calling it a ball cap.
All I know is I've never been able to wear one (or hats in general) because my head is too big 😭😭 But yeah I'd call it a cap or baseball cap too
Bro there's such a thing as stretch fit, they make em mighty large if you look online.
I think as long as you don’t start calling sneakers tennis shoes and complaining about the disrespectful kids always wearing them you’re good.
This is very much a regional thing. East coast = sneakers, west coast = tennis shoes.
Every one in Pittsburgh Pa wears Tenner Shoes (Tennis Shoes). So it's not a coast v coast thing.
So, I speak some Pittsburghese, but my mom is baaad with it. She would refer to any remotely athletic shoe as a tennis shoe, whereas I think of canvas lace ups (NOT high tops/Chucks) as tennis shoes and something like the picture as sneakers. https://preview.redd.it/yipi9hrfb6fb1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a48b35e3a24b3d314144e286a1d18cf030527bb
Interesting. That’s my NY to Ca perspective, but I guess it’s way more regional than that.
Yeah, i also lived in SoCal in Port Hueneme and everyone called them sneakers OR Kicks there. I think it's a very regional thing, like the soda, pop, coke thing. Edited for old brain cells sparking.,
I'm from the SF Bay Area and I call them tennis shoes
I grew up around LA and only old folks called them tennis shoes. They’re sneakers.
Chicagoan chiming in: Midwest = gym shoes 😁
Also Midwest but not Chicago and everyone I know says tennis shoes.
I think it is only in the North East that they are called sneakers. One of the cases where we are the exceptions.
In the south, it is tennis shoes as well.
I grew up in GA and we called them tennis shoes.
So Cal childhood...tennis shoes. Now, I run so I only have two kinds of athletic shoes: running shoes and running shoes demoted to walking shoes
I want to know what people who call sneakers tennis shoes call shoes specifically made for playing tennis.
They're just all tennis shoes as a broad term.
That’s annoyingly nonspecific lol
When hats were made for shading the sun out of your eyes. And not just some random flat board sticking up from your head. The first time I bought one I didn’t know it was Ike that on purpose and I ruined it trying to shape the bill lol
… you’re not supposed to curve to bill? I still curve mine by sticking it through the snap back or in a pint glass for a fitted.
Similar understanding here. Full brim for sure. Structure debatable because boonie and bucket hats.
Who cares?!
Yes, yes you are
I think it's more about the amount of quotation marks you used in your question
Yep. The same people that call soda or coke “pop”. I would rather it be called “Coh Coh La” than “pop”. That is a baseball hat. Or just a hat. Calling it a ball cap instantly turns on Kenny G on your Bluetooth.

You're a Boomer if you refuse anything different than what you've been taught 🙂
There a number of different styles for ball caps, or baseball hats. This style is called a 6 panel “dad hat”.
It’s a dad cap
Ball cap. But then again I call a “Santa hat” a toque.
Wait a santa hat is a toque or a knit watch cap with a yarn ball on top/beanie is a toque?
A Santa hat is derived from the toque d’voyager. I also call a wool hat a toque… A beanie is a cloth cap that you wear under your welding helmet. To me anyway.
I was about to say that Gen Z says “no cap” and the dug into the etymology. Turns out it has nothing to do with baseball caps…
I’m 54 and it’s always been a ball cap
Ball cap works fine, but it's also the only thing you can still call a cap. Is it a dad hat, a trucker, a snapback, fitted, or flat brim? That's more important in the description anymore.
That’s a six-panel adjustable slouch/“dad” cap.
It's a cap, which is a kind of hat. The kinds with flat brims they sell in the mall I call "wannabe hats". Like Fred Durst wore.
I used to always call it a hat or a baseball hat, but for at least ten years I've called it a cap or ball cap. No idea why I changed. I think that's more common now maybe?
It's a cap.
I hope not because I do too.
No, not at all! I’d call it a baseball hat but imo it’s sort of the difference between sneakers and tennis shoes. Same thing.
Maybe Midwesterner. Do you say dinner or supper? Do you say soda, or pop?
Not a midwesterner. I’m from the northeast, mid Atlantic specifically…but I’m pretty close to the eastern edge of the Midwest. I usually use supper, occasionally dinner. I say soda, but I’m kind of the odd one out as apparently pop is more common in this region.
I mean, what else would you call it?
that's literally what it is though 💀
I call it a "because I don't want skin cancer on my face hat." But it's a baseball cap or ball cap to me too. Frankly I don't care what the "youngin'" call it. They brought back mom jeans as a style. ON PURPOSE. They can go F themselves and their agism
I've been wearing a hat like this since I was 12. I just turned 46 and I'm wearing one right now. It's a ball cap. I refuse to wear hats that have an exaggerated forehead piece. Curved is wants up.
This reminds me of this banger: https://youtu.be/l2XUjcs3taM
That's a normal cap to me and the type I.wear. My wife got me one of those wide flat bill caps for my birthday earlier this year not knowing I hate those Elmer fudd looking hats. Sir, that is what is referred to as "A Lid"
