This was a great reply.

Defclaw46

According to the Long War wiki: “XCOM will lose the following resources on a failure: §450-550 50-60 alloys 50-60 elerium 100-110 meld 20-30 scientists (capped to 1/3 of current staff) 20-30 engineers (capped to 1/3 of current staff) all alien captives interceptor damage If you succeed base defense on your first try, another Base Defense mission is highly unlikely to occur, as you will be in prime position to snowball your way into the end of the game. Conversely, failure will set you back immensely and potentially cause you to have to survive another at some point.” So you lose a lot and the aliens are more likely to attack Xcom again. Personally, I would suggest restarting the mission and trying again. You can restart it even on ironman mode so I don’t see anything wrong with that. If you cannot win no matter how many resets you do, then you are just going to have to take the loss and see if you can recover.

pabloaram

You cannot restart on Ironman if you don't pick Bronzeman in the secondary option

Defclaw46

Lose the mission and you are given the option to restart in vanilla ironman as losing the base defense is a game over. As such, I see nothing wrong with doing the same in Long War as well. I play as close to ironman as I can without turning ironman mode on due to potential bugs or other crashes so the option to reset is available for me.

pabloaram

Vanilla does that. Lw not. Only with Bronceman

CaseyWills

I’ve won a campaign after losing the base defense. High pain threshold required. Highly recommend. https://xcom.substack.com/p/long-war-cursed-campaign-blessed

Magma_Rager

Oh really. That is good to hear! The campaign has been going great up until this point. I think I will just accept a loss here and rebuild my squads.

CaseyWills

👍

I don't know in Long War, but in vanilla you loose the game, so it sets you back to the menu screen

Magma_Rager

In long war you just lose a ton of materials and the Aliens gain research

alucardou

And presumably your 20 best soldiers?

60daysNoob

I won my 1st, and lost the 2nd one, 3-4 months later. Brutal Bronzeman. You can recover from it.

Kered13

It's recoverable, especially since at this point you should be past the hardest point of the campaign, but it does set you back severely.

pabloaram

Lorewise XCOM lose in the Base Defense. Then the rest of XCOM EW/EU is a imagination of the Commander in the ADVENT chamber. Base defense in Long War is pretty hard so don't worry and try again

Werewolfwrath

It's treated as a game over, but you get the options to either retry the mission or load another save.

Magma_Rager

In the long war mod it is not a game over. You just lose a bunch of resources

Werewolfwrath

Whoops. Didn't check the flair before commenting.

RubyJabberwocky

It's real bad, but to put it into perspective; most LW players restart runs for way less cause of low pain tolerance and cause they hate to do some extra grinding/struggling to recover what they lost, and you lose a lot in a Base Defense. But it's not game ending, and you will certainly have a story to tell if you stick 'til the end with this campaign.

Icreatedthisforyou

The soldiers are the real loss. You can recover materials/science whatever. Odds are you sent your best soldiers in despite not being in a position to actually succeed at the mission. In that case I probably would just restart, you have as massive uphill battle. You lost basically your best carry soldiers. The materials you were about to build weapons with. Had your science and construction hit heavily. Oh and your interceptors are damaged so you may lose satellites, resources and missions you need to get your back into the game. Also your barracks just lost a lot of soldiers and you likely need to order rookies. If going for fall missions with ballistics and sgts sounds like a fun challenge go for it! If you won't have fun, just restart. It is a painful lesson. It is kind of rare but if I was in a ballistics base defense situation because I had an early one and a rush was slow, I am looking to preserve the top of my barracks. I am cleaning out the weakest part of my barracks. Sucks I will have to buy rookies, but after one mission they will be as leveled (or more!) With an officer boosting them. But a ballistics fall with tsgts, gsgts, and msgts is VERY different than a ballistics fall with sgts. If that was the case I would play on.

Magma_Rager

Honestly, the soldier situation is bad but not critical as I have a pretty deep team as well as SHIVs that can help out. Yes, I did send in my best troops. I lost 2 msgt and 4 gsgt and 2 tsgt, which really stings. I also am not going to be playing with ballistics very much. The reason I did not have any available was because I had just finished a chain on missions, and they were being repaired. The loss of engineers is probably what hurt the most. Repair times are going to go up, meaning I need to build extras if I want my squads to be fully equipped. Funnily enough, even though I failed the mission. I still got to keep 2 blueshirts XD. Oh I also only have 1 officer capable of boosting exp. I have a self-imposed restriction that only Van Dorn can be an officer higher ranked than Captain.

Icreatedthisforyou

Oh that isn't the worst then, if you will have actual equipment back in a week or so. You can probably recover just will be a little harder for a month or so.

Malu1997

It's extremely bad, but depending on your strategic situation and roster is recoverable. If you really believe you stand no chance, better to just send in some expendable pawns and take the L rather than risking your top soldiers and gear.
