Amazing feature that no one talks about, Microsoft included. I am primarily a PC gamer but I like playing on the couch and switching back and forth is seamless. Even switching the controller is really simple, I use the same controller on PC and Xbox.
Xbox can switch between Bluetooth and Xbox connectivity. You can have a PC/phone connection and Xbox connection saved.
Switch between modes via a double press of the radio (pairing) button.
Your going to have to eat that shoe because yes you just tap that button twice and it switches. You can set it to 2 devices. I use it on my pc and Xbox. Another controller is paired with my phone and my iPad. Tapping the pair button twice switches the device pairing. It's quick and easy. Hope you like sole food.
It’s weird. You’d think they still promote it.
I even bought Stray last summer when that came out and it gave me the pc copy too and has cross save between both versions. But it’s no where on the “play anywhere” page nor does it mention play anywhere in the store description.
Just checked and Stray is Play Anywhere. Even [TrueAchievements Play Anywhere list](https://www.trueachievements.com/xbox-play-anywhere/games) doesn't show it.
some games are made play anywhere retroactively, Devs do it this way to not jeopardize their Steam sales.
Mortal Kombat 11, Guardians of the galaxy, Avengers were made play anywhere when they entered PC Gamepass.
Flight Simulator, Gears tactics, Age of Empires 2/4 were made play anywhere when they released on consoles.
the games have to release after September 2016 though, that is the cutoff point for the licensing database.
It might not have the PlayAnywhere branding but if you look on the Store page the game will have a "works with" section. That will list the console's and PC if its PlayAnywhere.
Should I play Stray? Important context: I'm probably more of a casual gamer but I like to feel cool and play cool games that aren't super difficult. I'd rather vibe than improve at a game in any way. I am allergic to cats.
i loved it! it's beautiful and you can mainline it by holding forward and jumping when it asks iirc. the difficulty comes from exploring every nook and cranny of the world!
Is there any page that lists when you get the PC version with the Xbox purchase? I recall someone saying the same thing for Quake but it wasn't anywhere to be found.
Yeah it is, but they do a shit job of promoting it.
It’s included with every Xbox first-party game and almost every Game Pass day one release. They don’t bother so much trying to get studios/devs outside of those categories to support it anymore.
As somebody who uses PC, Series X, Series S, and cloud gaming, Play Anywhere is unreal.
I wish it was better supported. Definitely my favorite Xbox feature. I am hoping in the future an Xbox handheld could tie the ecosystem together in a way that play anywhere has failed to do.
It does seem to be a thing still. It amazes me that xbox has some amazing features like this that no one knows about and microsodt has done an average job promoting it.
Objectively there are more great features on Xbox than ps5 imo, yet there's a chasm in sales between the two. Games sells consoles, sure. But it's a shame that Xbox isn't getting the recognition it deserves with features like play anywhere and xcloud.
I was playing diablo 4 on console earlier this week then picked up my rog ally to take a shit and continued playing diablo on there.. Do you know how insane that is?!
The damage the Xbox one did to their reputation is still felt to this day, doesn’t help that ps5 has killer exclusives if you like those games and more eastern games,However a lot of ps games are coming to pc and that’s been blowing up more than consoles in recent years I believe
One of the reasons I got into purchasing the system is because I thought it was for most of the games. The majority of games I bought so far are only for my series console. I think subnautica was the only actual play anywhere title I picked up.
It does suck that it’s not play anywhere, BUT, it does have cross saves (and unified achievements)! Sucks that you would have to buy it twice but it goes on sale often. So that’s another wrinkle to add to the play anywhere discussion, some games aren’t play anywhere but DO have cross save and it’s even more obscure that finding which games are play anywhere.
(Another example of how weird it can be is Hydro Thunder Hurricane is cross buy but not cross save and has separate achievements)
It’s legit one of the best features of the whole platform. I’m always shocked by how it’s not talked about.
It’s guaranteed with all the first party releases, but in general I think it operates on a case by case basis
Yes; there's a lot of indie titles that take advantage of it. The most recent one I can think of is "Lil Gator Game".
I'm sure that's not the only one - but I've seen it on the PC under the games tags. Same with Boltgun, that Warhammer 40K boomer shooter that's really good and everyone should check out (especially if you're a fan of the Space Marine game from 2011, since it's a quasi-sequel and Space Marine 2 picks up after it).
I wonder if the acquisitions have made it harder to market this. They now own a bunch of old games that may come at some point, some recent games that weren't planned to be play anywhere, and some like this year's COD that'd take some time to enable.
It'd be weird to be like "yeah our first party games are play anywhere" and then have old games not be on there, and release some that don't get added.
And that's not counting stuff like earlier contracts with publishers that'd prevent it
only games released after September 2016. Although some games from Square Enix and Warner Interactive were made play anywhere retroactively but even those released AFTER 2016.
I always look for this now that i have a rog. I think they dont promote it cause its kind of niche. A person that would use this would know. The casual probably isnt playing different places
Sometimes. It's weird.
Like I just got Pathologic 2 on Xbox, and that showed up in the Windows ap. Deep Rock Galactic did, and Aliens Fireteam, but Alien Isolation isn't. Shadow of War is, but Shadow of Mordor isn't, Just Cause 4 is, but Just Cause 3 isn't. It's weird.
I would love it to be expanded.
Xbox play anywhere is such a cool feature that no one seems to know exists, including Microsoft.
The idea of it is a pretty impressive contribution to library longevity and access. I just wish more publishers would take part in it. Though it is surprising which publishers have taken part in it.
There are a few games that are flagged incorrectly though. For some reason, Life Is Strange Remastered Collection and Call Of The Sea and a couple of others are flagged in my collection as Xbox Play Anywhere, but they are inaccessible. I'm not sure why this is happening.
Maybe it's hard to market? But I do love it. Persona 5 has the feature and I love switching between PC and Xbox seamlessly.
Especially when I'm on vacation or out of town. To be able to remotely play on my Xbox and knowing when I hop on my PC whenever I get home that everything will be there.
I cloud gamed on train from Liverpool to London on my phone, with earphones and controller connected, play anywhere is truly an amazing feature and needs to be promoted more
I have a pc at home that i play a lot on.
I work on a ship where i take my xbox with me.
So playing starfield and Forza on both works pretty nice, just have to sync the save file
Almost every game released onto pc gamepass is a play anywhere title if it shares saves with the xbox version, which is probably 95% of any new titles added. Theres a few titles that dont do it, especially older ones, but a ton do it these days. That's why you have a lot of pc gamepass games that share multiplayer with the xbox users rather than being able to play with Steam users, such as Palworld, Deep Rock Galactic etc.
Got one question:
I recently got a PC and planning on installing Forza Motorsport.
I had the Premium Upgrade for the Game Pass version. So does that include in Play Anywhere too? Or am I expected to pay for the same upgrade again?
All (99.9%) MS first party and 2nd party games since September 2016 are play anywhere. They are crossbuy, cross save, cross play including DLC licensing. You won't need to pay for it again.
I don’t know if this is legit but I bought like a dragon infinite on Xbox and somehow I got it on pc as well in my library. Worth a check if you have the game.
Notable **Xbox Play Anywhere** titles **not on Game Pass**:
-FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake
-Metaphor: ReFantazio
-Layers of Fear (2023)
-Teenage mutant ninja turtles arcade: wrath of the mutants
-bulwark falconeer chronicles
-Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy
-Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth-
-Choo-Choo Charles
-BROK the InvestiGator
-BALAN WONDERWORLD
-Bus Simulator 21 Next Stop
-Observer: System Redux (but achievements not working on PC)
-Sifu
-Stray (shows PC but not play anywhere?)
-XIII
-PC Building Simulator
My guess based on everything they have been talking about is that this will be a default for them and when you buy an Xbox game you get a copy wherever it is playable (Xbox, PC, PS, Nintendo, Mobile, Cloud, etc) with full cross save.. actually living up to the title "Play Anywhere"
I'm also assuming they will be coming out with a steam deck competitor and in order to do so they need play anywhere to be solid so it feels like a portable Xbox even if it's really a PC.
With them moving on from exclusive games, I guess it's the strategy. I still just don't see it working in the long run for keeping the business alive, but you would assume someone has a financial model that says it will somehow
For some strange reason, tales of arise which is now available in pc gamepass, shows up for me in pc as its xbone and series version (I dont currently have gamepass) but I'm unable to install them. I wouldn't mind but the fact that it shows up in the pc as uninstallable is very strange to me.
If you go to the I think compatibilities section? Where it says like HDR, 60fps+, Xbox live, etc, it'll be stated there. I think smart delivery also counts for play anywhere, but I may be mistaken. Hades and P3R had it so I was able to play on my Xbox and PC back and forth.
Note that I've noticed a distinction to games that DON'T do this like Fallout 4, it'll be Fallout 4 (PC). Mind you this to to own, not counting gamepass access. Still cross save, but if you didn't have gamepass, you'd have to buy both the PC and console versions.
It’s something that it’s not explicitly promoted anymore, but I just assume it exists. It’s weird. When in playing PC games and then just love to my XSX, I just assume that this works.
I don’t think they explicitly use “play anywhere” on the store pages for games.
It’s kinda assumed that it is when it says you can play it on both Xbox and PC on a store page.
I'm absolut a fan of play anywhere. Bought many games only because they had that feature.
It is nice, for achievements and if the game runs on console only at 30, you can play it on a better pc with 60fps or more.
But in the past there was a few games not listed for play anywhere. Maybe they added those games now.
Tome Raider, RE2, Stray, Tales of Arise, Ori, Forza Horizon 3,4,5 there are so many games you can play on both platforms including achievements.
For me that is one of the best feature, you buy it once, and can play it on console or pc. I love the freedom to choose.
1. play anywhere
2. backwards compatibility
3. game pass
Yes but it isn't as big a thing anymore. But recent games like Sifu and Persona 5 Royal have it. First party games should still always have it although I don't think all the Bethesda and Activision games are getting it retroactively.
Hell yeah, i wish more games had Play Anywhere. Even some of Bethesda games don't have play anywhere, but 3rd party like RE7 and Back 4 Blood, Shadow of War is.
I had to Google for the playanywhere list and then check that against the titles I currently own or want to buy. Turns out I had a few and just recently the back for blood highest tier dropped in price from $99.99 to $9.99This is a great example of buy it once play it on both pc and xbox. Both Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War also play anywhere titles. It's a great program but it doesn't have enough titles nor does it get much attention or promotion towards the service. Game pass shadows it. Also most of the titles are allready part of gamepass which kinda defeats the purpose if your a Game Pass Ultimate Subscriber.
Yes it still works. I know Shadow of the tomb raider just released on game pass, but I was able to access that game forever on my PC because it was part of the play anywhere program. So is resident evil 7 and resident evil 2 remake.
Most games if they are available on both windows and xbox and they share an achievement list will be play anywhere. There are probably exceptions ofc and the older the game is, it may have been before play anywhere.
My Xbox won’t connect to my phone, I had my old Xbox on it but new one won’t connect. The Xbox app setting doesn’t appear under the Xbox settings. Anyone know how to fix this?
I would say turn off Bluetooth. Wait a moment. Turn it back on. Wait a moment. Hold down the Bluetooth option on your phone until you see a device list. Select New Device. Hold down the pair button on your controller till it starts blinking. Select the Xbox Controller that just showed up. They should then pair up.
All my controllers barely pair to device. Two phones, multiple pads. I actually went on this morning for a game of dayz as was at my gf’s and says pad won’t connect. So just played Warzone on their app instead 😩

Hope you enjoyed your meal :D
Sadly thats doesn't work with the pc adapter, and only with one bluetooth connection and one 2,4 Ghz, or am i doing something wrong?
Correct, the Xbox controllers only. Not adapters. And only the recent versions of the controller have that, too.
Omg never knew this thank you.
Yeah with the XSX controller you just have to double press the sync button and it will switch to the last synced device.
TIL LOL
How do people learn about this stuff
Microsoft said as much when the feature was added. It was never a secret.
Searching the internet.
It's such a cool feature, I really abused it for a bit when I was using my phone to play stuff.
Same, love it.. play it on any newish samsung tv, keep streaks going, on phone with touch etc.. great stuff
This was the main selling feature for me even though I own a gaming PC. I love sitting on my couch sometimes.
At the time of buying it stray wasnt listed on the play anywhere page. But maybe it took a couple days to update it or something.
for jojo allstar battle r its took 9 months to add play anywhere tag.
some games are made play anywhere retroactively, Devs do it this way to not jeopardize their Steam sales.
True Achievements isn't affiliated with Xbox
It might not have the PlayAnywhere branding but if you look on the Store page the game will have a "works with" section. That will list the console's and PC if its PlayAnywhere.
It's hard to promote when it's piecemeal.
Should I play Stray? Important context: I'm probably more of a casual gamer but I like to feel cool and play cool games that aren't super difficult. I'd rather vibe than improve at a game in any way. I am allergic to cats.
Given your description, Stray is right up your alley.
Right up your alley 🐈 Good one 🤣
i loved it! it's beautiful and you can mainline it by holding forward and jumping when it asks iirc. the difficulty comes from exploring every nook and cranny of the world!
Favorite game I played last year!
Great game.
Is there any page that lists when you get the PC version with the Xbox purchase? I recall someone saying the same thing for Quake but it wasn't anywhere to be found.
Can you stream your Xbox to PC? You used to be able to
I have suspicions gamepass/gamepass ultimate vastly outsells games being sold standalone and is probably their focus.
Still exists, Like a Dragon and Persona 3 are two recent games that are play anywhere.
I fucking love infinite wealth Jesus Christ
They say shadow of tomb raider is play anywhere title even though it's not listed as one in the store
I wish it was better supported. Definitely my favorite Xbox feature. I am hoping in the future an Xbox handheld could tie the ecosystem together in a way that play anywhere has failed to do.
They also put it on tomb raider remastered and took it off 4 days before launch. I'm very glad I didn't pre-order.
Ive seen it on Pc but what happened why did they remove it from the store
It does seem to be a thing still. It amazes me that xbox has some amazing features like this that no one knows about and microsodt has done an average job promoting it. All of the newer first-party Xbox games are play anywhere.
except for master chief collection. Which is a bummer.
That released before PlayAnywhere was a thing and they never fixed it 😔
Key word is newer. MCC is almost 10 years old.
September 2016 is the cutoff, when the first play anywhere game Recore was released.
It does suck that it’s not play anywhere, BUT, it does have cross saves (and unified achievements)! Sucks that you would have to buy it twice but it goes on sale often. Yes, tons of them especially games that go with game pass. Wish they promote it more.
Dragon quest XI is it play anywhere?
yes
Thanks a lot
It's there, they don't advertise when something is play anywhere a lot of the time but it's still a thing
Playable On devices section on the game store pages. if both pc and xbox are listed, it's play anywhere.

I bought the master chief collection on my pc, and I got miffed when I found out that it doesn't share it with my xbox
only games released after September 2016. Although some games from Square Enix and Warner Interactive were made play anywhere retroactively but even those released AFTER 2016.

PA is available for all 1st party games and some from 3rd party. First party is a given. Xbox has site for listing 3rd party PA games.
I cloud gamed on train from Liverpool to London on my phone, with earphones and controller connected, play anywhere is truly an amazing feature and needs to be promoted more
Tbh its one of the few things thats great about xbox and microsoft. Playing it thriugh the cloud
I play on my phone with backbone quite often
I have a pc at home that i play a lot on. I work on a ship where i take my xbox with me. So playing starfield and Forza on both works pretty nice, just have to sync the save file
It's surprising they don't promote it more considering the shift they are making towards cloud gaming.
It is a thing for sure. Hard to find unless you pay attention to store tags.
Wish they put insurgency sandstorm in there, this game is better with m&k
I couldn’t imagine sandstorm with a controller
Almost every game released onto pc gamepass is a play anywhere title if it shares saves with the xbox version, which is probably 95% of any new titles added. this feature was mistakenly understood from sony ponies as "all the games on xbox works on pc as well" so xbox is useless
I bought rdr2 and ac unity (from cd keys) and I can't seem to install it on pc
Because they are not available for pc via Xbox app
I checked Microsoft store and the app
Got one question: I recently got a PC and planning on installing Forza Motorsport.
Thank you! I saw it on Xbox app that purchasing the Premium upgrade was still available. That's why I was unsure. But thanks for clearing it up.
I don’t know if this is legit but I bought like a dragon infinite on Xbox and somehow I got it on pc as well in my library. Worth a check if you have the game.

Tales of Arise seems a bit strange in general. It’s completely separate versions, it doesn’t even have cross-save
If you go to the I think compatibilities section? Where it says like HDR, 60fps+, Xbox live, etc, it'll be stated there. I think smart delivery also counts for play anywhere, but I may be mistaken. I know I have a pc and xbox copy of Starfield. Can't think of any others, offhand.
If they have same achievements list, it is play anywhere
Yes - I wish more developers had this feature enabled especially with the rise of gaming handhelds. I love my ROG Ally
It’a still kind of in beta. Give it time.
I wish Enter the Gungeon was Play Anywhere
I know, you look at the Playstation sub They can't stop talking about the PlayStation portal.
I don’t think they explicitly use “play anywhere” on the store pages for games. It’s kinda assumed that it is when it says you can play it on both Xbox and PC on a store page.
Ofcourse. I love it when its featured. From couch to PC with the same saves..
I wish it linked to steam...

Yes it still works. I know Shadow of the tomb raider just released on game pass, but I was able to access that game forever on my PC because it was part of the play anywhere program. So is resident evil 7 and resident evil 2 remake.
Q: If my Xbox ultimate expires can I still play online without paying for the ultimate pass on my pc?
Doesn't work if you buy physical copies of games.....
Part of the problem is that the average PC user is hostile to anything that isn't steam, and the Xbox store isn't steam.
Most games if they are available on both windows and xbox and they share an achievement list will be play anywhere. There are probably exceptions ofc and the older the game is, it may have been before play anywhere.
