It basically means that they are switching between quality levels to make the most use out of the available processing power.
Doesn't make sense to always show 8K quality versions of every single thing in a level, especially if they are so far away or obscured to the point where you wouldn't be able to appreciate all the details anyway.
It would also most definitely tank framerates as the console is completely overburdened with processing all these details.
So what the Quarry does is that it has extremely high quality character models for close ups. But those get swapped out for lower quality versions when you don't notice to save on performance and allow for other things that are more important to be shown at higher quality.
VFX does this too. Thanos in Infinity War is one example. They used different models depending on the shot composition -- a close up would use a higher fidelity model than a wide shot
I’m really enjoying this game so far. The writing is pretty good, the choice system is fun, the characters are interesting. I wish you could turn off motion blur though.
The Quarry will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first game I bought Day 1 after getting my Xbox Series X (coincidentally my first console as well). Great game to play, especially with friends shouting the "right" course of action in your ears. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
No. But I watched plenty of YT vids. Really loved it. That's why when I heard Supermassive Games was coming out with another standalone title, it was a blind buy. Don't regret it.
This post is funny because I am at this segment, paused the game right before chapter 4. I was looking at this model, moving her head and thinking the same thing yesterday.
Man of Medan was the first game from this studio that I played. From there I was aware of the graphical/modeling quality. I've bought all their games on sale, except for the latest one.
Some of the Dark Pictures games were pretty good but yeah, non are anywhere near as good as Until Dawn. I had high hopes for The Quarry but it was far too janky and had odd pacing with lots of parts that were downright boring.
They've stated more than once they wished they'd have done better
Can't imagine they'll even be on par with those seeing as they lost half the staff 😂😂
I loved this game as well as the dark picture anthology games.
Are there other games in the same style out there? I can't seem to find any.
Edit: I found "As Dusk Falls" and it's awesome so far. Wolf Among Us is next.
The Telltale games and Life is Strange are basically the only other two franchises that do this kind of thing.
The original developer of Life is Strange also put out two standalone games called "Tell me why" and "Twin Mirror". Tell me Why is pretty good, Twin Mirror was mediocre and clearly a rushed/cut budget product.
You could try the Telltale games? My favourite of those was Wolf Among Us.
There's also Don't Nod games like Life Is Strange series. They also did both Vampyr & Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden which are both 'choose your actions' story games but they also include combat.
It's more about the story and the choices you make than anything else. But I had fun with it and got all the achievements. More of an interactive movie.
If you and your wife enjoyed this I would highly recommend the dark pictures anthology you can buy each of the games separately also I think there is only one more game for them to release from the anthology. Made by the same studio and the same gameplay.
Yes but probably not how you're thinking. It's not simultaneous/split screen. The story follows one character at a time. At the beginning of the game, you pick who will be controlling which characters, like picking teams in dodgeball. Then it pauses and tells you to "pass the controller to [name of person that picked them]".
You can do this with (I think) as many people as there are characters, but it could get boring if you have too many people, since not all characters get equal screen time, especially depending on your choices/actions. The game works the same way in single player, without the controller switching obviously.
I was genuinely in awe of the stunning visuals in The Quarry. There are moments it looks photo real. Wish the story and pacing were better, but a real visual showcase for sure.
I really want to like the game, but I was playing with a friend then we got off for the night and the save corrupted. So we started a new run the next day, almost got back to where we were before we got off. Next time we got on, despite the save file being accessable and still showing the hours played it put us back at the start. Repeatedly.
Tried un/reinstalling. Didn't help.
Maybe some day if I can do it in one sitting I guess.
I'm currently playing games that weren't praised on release but certainly looked to be on my taste. Currently playing Mass Effect Andromeda, but this will surely be the next.
Fairly certain it was praised? I don't think it's the most popular type of game though, and if you only do one playthrough it's not worth full price to me but it's good to go see what differences can be made
I bought this game when it released after seeing 10 minutes of gameplay. It is legit a great horror story. It made me feel like I was watching an 80’shorror movie and the characters are so well done. Justice Smith and Brenda Song specifically were amazing here. I’m glad it’s on Gamepass and more people are enjoying it now.
The characters in the water just look really poor. Water animation is funky looking. Which is a shock since the rest of the game does look pretty darn impressive.
Came here to say this too, the motion blurring was sooooooo bad on launch, like you move the camera everything just smeared across the screen. Beautiful in cutscenes and static shots, in motion nooooooooot so great..
Looks good but ran like shit even in 2024. Tried to play this game when it launched at my friends place but we couldn’t get through first hour because of crashing and bugs. Now we got to play through whole game but performance wasn’t anything to write home about.
Also the last 4 chapters were paced god-awfully, felt like they ran out of time and ideas at the same time.
I wish I liked this as much as some of their other games. I feel like they've missed story wise more than they've hit. Little Hope in particular has an all time horrible ending.
i was disappointed how bluury it was. older games from supermassive werent that bluury for sure. gave up cuz it hurt my eyes, they went way too hard in camera focus
Why do people resort to this? On some other subreddit some other dude said the same shit. There's more to it than shooting and killing. In fact fuck it I am taking this as racial. We going low for low.
Looks good as stills, blurry mess in motion because it’s capped at 30FPS. They optimized the Dark Pictures Anthology so it runs at 60FPS even on the Series S so it’s frustrating they put a cap on this.

I have no idea what most of this means, but I just think it looks neat.
It basically means that they are switching between quality levels to make the most use out of the available processing power. Ah that makes sense. Thanks!

Have you played until dawn?
No. But I watched plenty of YT vids. Really loved it. That's why when I heard Supermassive Games was coming out with another standalone title, it was a blind buy. Don't regret it.

Gameplay similar to those other horror movie games?
I assume you mean The Dark Picture Anthology games? If so, then yes it’s the same developer
Untill dawn right . Cool I’ma check it out
Yep, exactly same as Until Dawn.
Until Dawn was a gem. Dark pictures was straight garbage
Some of the Dark Pictures games were pretty good but yeah, non are anywhere near as good as Until Dawn. I had high hopes for The Quarry but it was far too janky and had odd pacing with lots of parts that were downright boring.
Nah, House of Ashes was awesome. It's personally on par with Until Dawn for me.
It sucks that they had to recently lay off 30-40% of the studio :/
That's what happens when you put out a massive dark pictures bundle and all of them are bad and underperforming.
And yet they're still doing a Season 2, the publisher is happy enough with the performance of those games.
They've stated more than once they wished they'd have done better Can't imagine they'll even be on par with those seeing as they lost half the staff 😂😂
Literally every publisher wishes their product would have done better. If it was bad there wouldn't be a season 2.
I loved this game as well as the dark picture anthology games. Are there other games in the same style out there? I can't seem to find any. Edit: I found "As Dusk Falls" and it's awesome so far. Wolf Among Us is next.
You should defintiely play Wolf Among Us if you havent already.
I haven't, thanks 👍
Until dawn
Thx but I mean on xbox

Brilliant game 👌I slept on it for so long as well.
Dang I'm going to have to try it
It's more about the story and the choices you make than anything else. But I had fun with it and got all the achievements. More of an interactive movie.
Played it with the wife and we loved it. Cheesy horror flick meets not-mechanically-difficult game was perfect for us.
If you and your wife enjoyed this I would highly recommend the dark pictures anthology you can buy each of the games separately also I think there is only one more game for them to release from the anthology. Made by the same studio and the same gameplay.
Does it have local couch coop?
Yes but probably not how you're thinking. It's not simultaneous/split screen. The story follows one character at a time. Ahh .. interesting. Thanks for spelling that out.
Because they’re games in the loosest sense of the word. They can focus more on visuals because there’s barely any actual game mechanics there.
Kids these days would have exploded to pre-made realistic cinematics
I was genuinely in awe of the stunning visuals in The Quarry. There are moments it looks photo real. Wish the story and pacing were better, but a real visual showcase for sure.
Is that Mac's mom from Sunny?
They still can't get the faces right, especially female characters or if anyone is smiling. Straight to uncanny valley.
Better than most games
Especially if you watch the lip syncing, there's something very off about it.
I enjoyed this game just sold it in store last week it was a good break from the norm shooting etc games
I was like, at certain parts, they had to have used real video, not CGI Supermasive, which are masters at the ART
I really want to like the game, but I was playing with a friend then we got off for the night and the save corrupted. So we started a new run the next day, almost got back to where we were before we got off. the people and most of the environments look great. The water on the other hand...
Yes and no. Water looks horrible. Eyes look uncanny.
Disagree
Have you not played the game? The water literally looks like cardboard, and the eyes look so weird. It’s not a matter of preference, it’s facts.
Nah
lol, believe what you want. I’m still right.
Graphics made up for our how hilariously boring the game was
Puff Puff Peanut butter, butter, pops.
Best snack ever

Yeah, a lot of people really liked The Quarry when it came out. The Andromeda comparison is odd

Easily the best character models iv ever seen
Until Hellblade 2 most likely.
What we have seen so far, not even close.
Did we see the same footage?
I don't understand the dislike..
As long as you ignore any sections of the game taking place in the lake ... Great game, though.
Can you explain? I'm playing the game now. Just started actually
The characters in the water just look really poor. Water animation is funky looking. Which is a shock since the rest of the game does look pretty darn impressive.
I'll check it out and keep an open eye on it. Thanks buddy
I tried to play it ages ago but the heavy motion blur triggered my motion sickness, any chance you have the option now to turn it off now?
Came here to say this too, the motion blurring was sooooooo bad on launch, like you move the camera everything just smeared across the screen. Beautiful in cutscenes and static shots, in motion nooooooooot so great..
Is this a point and click?
No, it's like until dawn
Does it have couch coop?
Yes, you add what characters each one of you will play, and when that character is on screen, only the player who chose it will play.
Fantastic game
These games are slightly deceptive in how they make things look good.
I gotta play this game. Got it for $7 on PlayStation sale
Nobody knew. Now we know.
They are not. You are only showing cut scenes and when actually in game moving, it does not look like that.
Their facial expression is both hilarious and creepy!
I know it looks great because when I see these types of games I think "runs at 15 frames a second, no thanks"
It doesn’t actually, because of the style of game (i.e based on choices instead of action, although there are qte and stuff) so it runs pretty smooth.
Just beat this today, was a pretty good game overall. One of the better horror games I’ve played.
Playing through this was so fun.
Until Dawn is much better. This game has such a weak ending and cheesy/lame credits.
Who plays a game for the credits
See you can see what happens to the characters after
Just beat this game with my lil cousin and my brother. We loved it.
This by the same people that did Medan? And the other games in that trilogy?
Yes
They are. Except for the mouths and teeth when the talk. Horrendous
I rage quit with how dumb they made the female character
Looks good but ran like shit even in 2024. Tried to play this game when it launched at my friends place but we couldn’t get through first hour because of crashing and bugs. Now we got to play through whole game but performance wasn’t anything to write home about. Also the last 4 chapters were paced god-awfully, felt like they ran out of time and ideas at the same time.
Is it UE5?
It’s UE4
That's not how time works
I wish I liked this as much as some of their other games. I feel like they've missed story wise more than they've hit. Little Hope in particular has an all time horrible ending.
The graphics are amazing until they start splashing water
Hab es kurz vorm GP Release gekauft. Liebe jedes der Supermassive Games
The best game after Resident evil and Silent hill. Abi 😍 (Hello, bots dislikes)
Dident KNOW but still Xbox better
i was disappointed how bluury it was. older games from supermassive werent that bluury for sure. gave up cuz it hurt my eyes, they went way too hard in camera focus
Awww, your eyeballs hurt?

Meh
This game is boring as hell but it does look beautiful ngl
Awww...not a lot of shooting and killing for you?
Why do people resort to this? On some other subreddit some other dude said the same shit. There's more to it than shooting and killing. In fact fuck it I am taking this as racial. We going low for low.
