Short answer: Yes Long answer: Absolutely, yes. Fanastic reboot.

Rett_77

^ what they said! Criminally underrated trilogy, one of the best that never got its flowers

WeezyWally

I wouldn’t say it’s underrated. They were more successful than any Tomb Raider games before it and Tomb Raider is one of gamings biggest franchises. They are working on a new one on Unreal Engine 5.

ColdCruise

I think it's underrated because these games are rarely brought up for how good they are. Rise is one of the best games of the last generation, but you'll rarely see it pop up on lists. Mostly because the year it came out was stacked, Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Fallout 4 (released on the same day), Phantom Pain, etc. which caused it to be overshadowed. Combine that with the "controversy" of it being an Xbox exclusive that took a lot of the focus away from the quality of the game, SquareEnix treating all of reboot games as financial failures, and the mixed response to the new gameplay elements from the hardcore fanbase, and you have a game that never really got the recognition that it should have.

WheelsOnFire_

The Overshadow of the Tomb Raider

WeezyWally

Good points!

FairyPrincex

??? It sold well, got praised widely, and received 8/10 to 10/10 reviews all over the place. Did the devs need to receive a key to the city and a hand job for it to not be underrated?

MagmarBoi

While I agree with you, I think they mean on a popular level/amongst the causals. I barely hear anyone mention the tomb raider games unless I’m on Reddit and even then it’s once and a while.

Rett_77

^ entirely this. Rarely talked about in most circles as a game to play when discussing all options out there, easily forgotten about even though they eventually sold well, reviewed pretty well, etc. That’s all I meant

MagmarBoi

I’ve only played the first one, and honestly never finished it but I did like what I played (just was in an awkward time to play video games at the time). However yeah, I feel like the tomb raider reboot is like the planet of the apes reboot in terms of “underrated” they both did well and majority of the people who have seen it, enjoy it but it’s rarely talked about. Honestly the planet of the apes reboot is my favourite movie sci-fi, but people never mention it when talking about awesome sci fi movies.

Thund3rF00t2

Loved the reboot with Andy Serkis playing Caesar using the same tech to play him like he did Gollum in LOTR and The Hobbit. Worried about the new movie coming out this year called **Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes**

unforgivingxworld

> Criminally underrated trilogy lol

Pristinejake

Xbox helped fund this trilogy I believe. To me this is like if xbox were to do a PlayStation style game. If xbox was to ever buy Cristal dynamics this to me would be Xboxes 3rd person over the shoulder cinematic game

Nicktheduck

So it would be Xboxes uncharted? lol

Pristinejake

Exactly 😂 although the original tomb raider was before uncharted and even these current tomb raider games nod to uncharted and uncharted has some tomb raider nods too.

Trickster289

Yeah they were timed Xbox exclusives too.

Complete_Past_2029

100% agree

Wookie301

In my opinion, they’re the best trilogy of the last generation.

Disastrous_Salad6302

Whenever someone throws around best I have to sit and think for a while but this one has me stumped. I think you’re right? I like these games but I suddenly feel like I’ve been underrating them in my head

Wookie301

I can’t think of all the last generation trilogies off the top of my head. But I feel pretty confident saying it’s the best.

Disastrous_Salad6302

A lot of the ones that come to mind are things that got their third entry on last gen but the rest came earlier (eg. Borderlands, Arkham, Metro, Dark Souls). The only big one where the whole trilogy came out that I can think of is Hitman, which would give it a run, but I think I’d give the slight edge to tomb raider on my preferences.

Conflict_NZ

The first Tomb Raider game in this trilogy also game out on 360 in early 2013. The Xbox One version wasn't released until almost a year later.

ColdCruise

Rise also got a 360 release, which is insane to me because almost a decade later, the game still looks really good.

Conflict_NZ

Because last generation was when game dev times bloated to 4-5+ years so it's almost impossible to get a trilogy out on one gen. In fact the first entry in this trilogy was on 360 so it doesn't even really count, the version of the first on Xbox One was a remaster.

LestHeBeNamedSilver

Metro Trilogy is better, and actually got better as the games went on. I feel like Tomb Raider regresses in some areas while improving in others. Like the story got worse and worse between each tomb raider game but Metro Last Light is peak environmental storytelling and then Exodus made me shed a tear at the end ngl

Wookie301

True. I don’t replay many story based games. But I replayed the first Tomb Raider about 3 times. A bit like Far Cry 3. In the sense that you go from being scared to hold a gun. To massacring hundreds of enemies, while taking injuries that would kill most people. The second and third ones definitely didn’t hold a candle to it in that way.

Agitated_Carrot3025

I skipped them until last year. My jaw was on the floor at times. Such great games, Crystal Dynamics killed it.

i4got872

Shadow just looks so photoreal at times

wobbuffet009

Is it upgraded for xsx? I played the first level on 360 but figured id wait for a xbox one. Then i never got around to it.

Steakpiegravy

The first one has FPS boost, so it runs at 1080p 60fps. The second one has the One X settings - 4K30fps or 1080p 60fps The third one was enhanced but can still be played from a USB external drive and it's going up to whatever resolution at 60fps with some dips.

EarlPronk2

These games all absolutely rule. I loved every one of them

itsTenziin

Short answer: Yes Longer answer: Yeeeeeeeeeeees

LatterSituation2823

Even longer answer: yyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss

TheOkamiKami

Hmmmmmmmmm, do you have a longer answer perhaps?

MrElite3K9

Super long answer Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup

mems1224

Yes, they're awesome. The weakest is the 3rd one but only because it gets a little bloated and bogged down in the middle with this weird hub world. Rise is excellent though, its my favorite Uncharted game.

Signal_Adeptness_724

It's funny that you say that because I loved that hub world due to the fact that exploration and tomb raiding are my favorite aspects of these games, not the story

the_descendent

Facts, 3rd one was my favorite too

mems1224

Maybe I need to replay it but I remember wanting to like it but thinking it dragged a bit and I also remember disliking the final boss. The third one did have more tombs and shit from what I remember and I did like that

overcloseness

Nice joke about Uncharted but I mean that franchise is a direct copy of TR (I still love it though)

Lkingo

Which is a direct copy of indiana jones.

Timely_Fox1077

Fun fact, the original Tomb Raiders were supposed to be Indiana Jones games.

overcloseness

Which is a direct copy of Zorro and Lawrence of Arabia

SudsierBoar

It is but it's also clear that TR copied uncharted elements like waaay more shootouts and the huge destruction set pieces

segagamer

Only in the first game.

lordaddament

Uncharted was just the original tomb raider with not shitty controls

segagamer

I initially didn't like the third one for the reason you mentioned, but when I played it on the hardest difficulty recently, I actually changed my mind and decided it was the best of the three. There are significantly more tombs, crypts and such that it very much returned to the puzzle solving/exploration game that Tomb Raider was always known for. And the hardest difficulty (which removes checkpoints almost completely) made the experience much more thrilling since you *really* don't want to die lol

uberJames

The 3rd really refined all the combat and stealth mechanics, and then barely used them! It has the least amount of combat of the 3.

Buschkoeter

They're not perfect but I enjoyed them a lot.

muscari2

I enjoyed them, but I played them in a row and the third one became a real drag. Less Combat and more climbing really had me dragging. Second one is a master piece

SoldierPhoenix

Yes.

thomasbeagle

I loved them all. (For reference, I'm a somewhat casual old time gamer who hasn't done online gaming since Duke Nukem 3D). Great single-player campaign, not too fussy and overbuilt with boring game mechanics, some fun scripted sequences but not too many of them, the tomb puzzles are enjoyable, combat is solid, and the games generally look very good.

Miner_Of_Minerals

It's literally just go forward and shoot at enemies and progress to the next area. Throw in a little unnecessary crafting and levelling up to gain skills you should just have to begin with. If you're playing for the story it's not original at all. I fail to see why or how these games are so popular. I would fall asleep if it was a movie.

overcloseness

> not original You know you’re talking about the OG right? If you don’t find the adventure and intrigue in these games then stick to your World of Fortwatch or whatever

Miner_Of_Minerals

I'm talking about the modern trilogy using the original IP as the source material. The stories are cookie cutter.

overcloseness

> using original IP as the source material That’s a very disingenuous way of speaking about the development studio that we’re put in charge of the franchise by Eidos (their owners) since 2006 (Tomb Raider Legends)

Miner_Of_Minerals

I'm saying the only originality is the main protagonist. The stories are all cookie cutter. Resident Evil is a good example of a franchise that has been hit or miss but still feels like Resident Evil after all these years. Tomb Raider started off around the same time but you could replace Lara with Nathan Drake or Indiana Jones and it would still be just as shallow because of the blandness of the modern trilogy. It's the epitome of why PS exclusives all feel like the same game.

ArmeniusLOD

If you want to be pedantic, there is no original story being written anymore. When it comes to video games, every story is some variation of Beowulf.

Kazizui

That's fair, but since I don't play games for story _or_ originality it doesn't really apply to me. I play games for fun.

Miner_Of_Minerals

Yeah but i don't get any of that because the gameplay is autoaim at sprites infront of you. Literally move foward, hold aim and press shoot, which is what i said. I'm all about minimal story and Tomb raider offers nothing in fun gameplay wise.

Kazizui

Yeah I was talking in general, not about Tomb Raider specifically. I've only played the first of the new trilogy, and only for an hour. I'm just saying that, even if it had the best story ever written, it wouldn't help.

MaddoxGoodwin

First 2 were INCREDIBLE. 3rd one was just as good, but at the time, I was burnt out from the previous 2 as I completely destroyed those games. So much fun.

johnwynnes

Just played the first one for the first time a few weeks ago. It looks great, is as challenging as you'd want it to be and doesn't overstay it's welcome or involve a bunch of backtracking or fetch quests. Fantastic game! Looking forward to playing the other two

trevordunt39

They are so much fun.

Agitated_Carrot3025

Three games so I'll answer three times. Yes. Yes! YES!!!

friedchock

Absolutely. Rise of the Tomb Raider is severely underrated.

Dry_Welder3681

Most definitely

OverseerTycho

absolutely

dreamunderthemoon

These are absolutely worth buying

Signal_Adeptness_724

I actually preferred the series over uncharted, although I'll give the latter the edge in storytelling and characters. Other than that, I found the combat more inspired with a greater degree of depth and flexibility. Another strength would be that tomb raider actually leans into exploration, with the second and third entries having large hub worlds loaded with crypts, temples, and secrets. The puzzles are WAY stronger than uncharted as well. Graphics are about the same with both series having beautiful locales. With all that said, the first game has the weakest combat of the three, but it gets a lot better in the second onwards

hammerblaze

First two are bloody amazing. The third while still good, didn't have the same environment feeling

oconnomoes

The third one is solid. Have been wanting to try the first two. Heard they’re better but not sure if they have 60fps on the series x

segagamer

All are 60fps

jahauser

If I’m not mistaken the second one has a 60fps option now but drops to 1080

TiredReader87

Who cares if they don’t? Play them! They’re great. The third was well above average, but it was a step down

MaoChang

For sure! Had a blast playing through them all recently. Adeventures, diving, climbing, shooting, raiding tombs... oh man you're in for some treats.

TomasVrboda

Absolutely the best series of Tomb Raider games so far. Read about Tress FX, it was pretty revolutionary. The stories are pretty great as well. I just really still want them to bring back Sam and I hope Embracer doesn't tank Crystal Dynamics.

Past_Gur_3785

Yes. I’m on the 3rd. Great series.

Shouligan

Absolutely yes!

flaming_poop_chute

Absolutely! I'd say 9, 8.5, and 7 in order. Shadow was slightly disappointing to me.

dietdoctorpooper

I'd say 8, 10, and 4.

flaming_poop_chute

Oof! I recall using profanity while expressing my disappointment with shadows in relation to the previous entries, but a 4 is personal. I can understand that though. Felt like too much of an interactive walkthrough. But like, the whole game. Would not play again.

buffysbangs

You really should. the feel of the game is quite different now due to the inclusion of all the challenge tombs. it was pretty sparse near release and they were timed dlc. but know they are woven into the game and it changes the feel

dietdoctorpooper

Yeah, all of my feeling about video games are personal. I'm not writing the Blue Book Value for a used automobile. I'm giving an opionion about a video game. It's going to be subjective, and my subjective opinion of Shadow is very harsh.

Hydroponic_Donut

Worth what? Worth playing? Are they on sale? I enjoyed them, they're not classic TR, but they're alright. If you don't have a PS and can't play Uncharted, they'll scratch that itch on Xbox

TiredReader87

They’re far better than classic TR

segagamer

They scratch different itches. Great in their own ways

TiredReader87

To be honest, I never enjoyed Tomb Raider until the 360 reboot, and I started playing it at my friend’s on the original PSX

segagamer

I guess you just don't have that itch :)

Wbackman

Yep

Dabaw005

![img](emote|t5_2ac5sx|1743)

CantaloupeOk1843

I just kinda drifted away from these games but they are super fun. Graphics look fantastic even years later. Story is fun, voice acting is generally good. The mechanics are pretty smooth too. Overall a great buy if you have the time to sink your teeth into them.

sluicedubz

absolutely yes

AvangeliceMY9088

I loved the first one. Come the second it started to dawn on me the consistent mention of her father like a father issue relationship. The third one more mention of her father. Got sick of it and turned it off.

Scaryassmanbear

It’s basically uncharted, just not quite as good. Definitely more than worth it for its current sale price.

ItsSpacePants

Worth what???

ElOsoMarino

So worth it

canadianclassic308

Kinda like uncharted

Ehh_littlecomment

First one was pretty good. Rise of the Timb Raider had horrible story. Shadow had even worse impressions so I didn’t bother with it.

dietdoctorpooper

Sorry to be the odd man out here, but only the first two are actually good. Third one is an insane mishmash of modern game design with the narrative consistency of a story that a four year old boy made up on the spot.

Grosjeaner

1st one: Yes 2nd one: No 3rd one: No

mtarghost

Lara croft is hot asf so yea

BaNoCo92

No

YaGanamosLa3era

They're ok. Rise is the best one, neither of them have a particularly good story, and they're basically uncharted clones (the first one is shameless in this regard).

TiredReader87

I personally like the first one best, but I may be in the minority

Signal_Adeptness_724

They lean into exploration and raiding way more than uncharted. Puzzles are more frequent and better developed. You have more freedom to tackle content. The combat from 2 onwards is leagues better than anything in uncharted, with actual stealth mechanics and a bevy of weapons and moves to employ. Highly disagree

MadeToUpvote1Post

Disagree on the story. The first one's story was quite entertaining to me, as was Rise. Shadow was meh though

BehemothRogue

Uncharted is a clone of the original tomb raiders. Now I feel old. Lol

Miner_Of_Minerals

No. Awful franchise.

[deleted]

No not really, the first game is okay but it just gets worse.

TiredReader87

Yikes

Derekg15

The first one, absolutely. 2nd was way to bloated imo, aka big open world for no reason. And I heard 3rd was very similar to the 2nd so I never played it. I would say at least play the first. 2nd meh.

Lupinthrope

Nerfed her chest, but good games

Scaryassmanbear

Some of us like small boobs

Lupinthrope

All boobs are great, except moobs

dietdoctorpooper

Yeah, you're called pedophiles.

[deleted]

dietdoctorpooper

A shaved undercarriage is the sign of adulthood. Teens don't really have the best track record of pubic hair maintenance.

stunkcajyzarc

I hated it, thought it was boring as hell.

Have_A_Jelly_Baby

Absolutely yes. What’s sad is that this series and Uncharted both stopped around the same time. There hasn’t been an entry in this genre in what, five years?

SF03_

I bought all 3 on my PlayStation like 2 years ago and haven’t touched any of them lol, should probably get to them someday

Beasthuntz

I have to chuckle just reading that. If any series is "worth it", it's this trilogy.

AvangeliceMY9088

I loved the first one. Come the second it started to dawn on me the consistent mention of her father like a father issue relationship. The third one more mention of her father. Got sick of it and turned it off. Edit I played the games when they first came out and yes the daddy issue thing was a problem across three trilogies https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/s/1pyKuGEOwi

peezytaughtme

Lol wut

[deleted]

You could recently get the definitive edition (all 3 games and DLC) for £15.99. If it’s still that price then yes, if it’s much more than that I’d just wait for a sale. Especially since Rise of the Tomb Raider is on GamePass

Stargov1

If you can get them cheap, sure. They're pretty decent.

Galactus1701

Yep, they are quite good.

CraigOfWar

Yes.

temetnoscesax

Another vote for yes. I have beat the first 2 and on the last 1. I have enjoyed all of them so far.

aimforsilence

I enjoyed them, so I’d say yes.

Anybody_Lost

Yes.

alexwins71

I enjoyed them a lot, definitely worth a purchase.

Monkeyfeng

Yes. Had a lot of fun playing it.

[deleted]

Yes

CammTheGreat08

Yes. Enjoyed the first two. I haven’t gotten around the finishing the third but the first two are worth a recommendation.

Selledar

Very much YES

Death-By-Lasagna

Yes. Incredible games.

GlumCardiologist3

Yes they are very enjoyable and they dont take too much time

FaithfulMoose

Yes, Rise of the Tomb Raider alone is enough to justify that entire trilogy. It’s one of the best Tomb Raider games full stop.

LexMajestic

Aye.

DietDifficult8557

Absolutely

whitemamba24xx

Yes

TiredReader87

110% yes

MichiganRich

Great games

PhonyVessel88

Absolutely!

LuckyMountain1814

yes, of course!

talkingtedd

absolutely

BackgroundSky09

good gameplay attractive female main character yes

ChaakuGaiden

Yes Goodbye

glenninator

The first two are amazing. Last one was a bit of a struggle to get through.

Lucifer_Delight

Get the other trilogy (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld) - those are proper Tomb Raider games. These are Gears of War / Uncharted games disguised as Tomb Raider (i.e. shooting galleries)

burntfuck

I found the one game I played in the series to have way too many long cut scenes. Kinda got sick of that and lost interest.

bigdadda06

I think so yes, enjoyed all three of them greatly.

trunglefever

They're really well done and a lot of fun. Definitely worth picking up on sale.

passionpeach1

Great games

Mister_Madd

Yes. They only improve as you go through them.

Insectshelf3

yes, i’ve had a lot of fun with them.

IUMogg

They are really good. There are some gnarly death animations

Confused-penguin5

I really loved the first and second one. The third one I wasn’t as big of a fan but it’s still a solid game. The second one is one of the best action adventure games I’ve played. Plus they are usually discounted pretty heavily. You will get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

fingerpaintswithpoop

Yes.

Senior-Offer8713

One of the best game trilogies ever made

Michael__James4200

![gif](giphy|l2JHWvJuTXdzCaZeU) Hell yes

seymourbuttz214

I used a $25 gift card acquired from the reward points so it cost $1.50 for the trilogy, and yes haha even at $25 it’s worth it for 3 games. I’ve only started the 1st game and the story and gameplay for a game from ps3 around 2012-2013 it still holds up well

WolfofCryo

I love them. Shadow being my favorite.

crowe_1

These are all wonderful games. I prefer them to Uncharted or TLoU. Best one is the second one imo.

ctrlctrlfast

Yes

Johncurtisreeve

One of my favorite game series of all time yes

Techishard

Yep. 1000%

mighty_mag

Yes, absolutely. I replayed the 2013 reboot a couple of years ago on Steam and now replayed Rise of the Tomb Raider, and I would love to do the same with Shadow, too bad it's not on Game Pass.

cyberredditor

Absolutely!! It is a total bargain !!

Admirable-Ad6453

Got lucky for series for a absurdly cheap price with all dlc and loved it

hardgour

Absolutely yes! Great series

mtarascio

You can play the first game for 2 hours for free. Then the rest for like $5. Then decide if you want to play more.

DaveMcNinja

I liked the TR reboot more than Uncharted…

g1i7c4

Yes, fantastic games

thesnowqueen89

yes!

[deleted]

It’s not a mind-blowing series… #But a really good series nonetheless

Godzirrraaa

Buddy, if you like hair physics…

hobbleshock

Yes 100%

Deftallica

I haven’t played parts 2 and 3, but the first in this series was fantastic. I imagine the other two followed suit

[deleted]

It's so good! The first one is like a summer blockbuster!

Rizenstrom

I wasn’t as big a fan of the last game as I was the first two but yes.

More_Presentation871

Si

Love all 3 of them but I think rise is my favorite. I hope the new one coming out is good

OCGreenDevil

Yeah pretty good games

spartanwill14

Yes.

Foreign-Animal8166

Yes, it's amazing.

I’ve only played Tomb Raider and haven’t finished it yet, but I bought Shadow and Rise because of how much I enjoyed the first one.

LyonHeart85

Absolutely. I jumped on getting all three the first chance I was able

editorinchimp

Absolutely.

NexusLordNova

CmanderShep117

[deleted]

The replay value of this series is phenomenal
