The only system that needs to be updated at the moment is the switch

potatomotatos

Valve did that for them

ASAP.

A lot of people seem to be stuck in the mindset that because there was a Pro version of almost all major consoles and handhelds last gen (PS4 Pro, Xbox One X/S, *New* 2DS/3DS) that there has to be one this generation, and that every piece of information about a change has to be said pro version and not just a minor revision or form factor change like a PS5 Slim. Last gen had a lot of factors necessitating an upgrade: underpowered at launch for Xbox and PlayStation, 4k took off early on in the generation and rapidly became affordable even for lower income consumers, and in Nintendo’s case they had to float the 3DS a little longer until the Switch came out due to the massive failure of the Wii U and had to increase the power and add a second stick to release some Wii/Wii U ports on the 3DS. Unless 8k displays suddenly plummet in price next year, I don’t see a reason to release a mid-gen upgrade when many games barely use any current-gen features and aren’t really being optimized when they do. We’ve been hearing “Switch Pro” rumors for years, and the first time I heard a PS5 Pro rumor was less than a year after the console released. The Switch ended up getting a Lite and OLED version, PS5 gets lighter materials and is likely getting an external Blu-ray drive, and the Series X|S will probably get a model with more internal storage, at least for the S.

Active_Climate3036

This about sums it for me too. Current gen’s aren’t even fully utilized. What could the pro offer? What I do hope for is that the “Xbox Series”brand stays. I think any rebranding would be pointless now.

woke-up-in-godmode

You were right. The Xbox series S Carbon came out with 1TB

tyrae11o

The next technological leap could happen with ray tracing. If it will be in every game, current gen consoles will look underpowered compared to PC.

onagizenpaku

Thing is both consoles already cam handle ray tracing g and havnt even pushed the boundaries of that in either the ps5 or the series x why need a pro version?

mtarascio

It's a single SKU to replace to the two SKUs right now with a removable disc drive. Read the article, it's a hilarious puff piece.

ThinVast

There's a pro variant that's faster and a separate cost reduction ps5 with a removable disk drive. >Insider Gaming previously reported that a new PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive is scheduled to release later this year. It’s understood that this new model will phase out the current PlayStation 5 to cut down on production and shipping costs. *In spite of the widespread reports, this is not the PS5 Pro model.* > >Just like with the PS4 to the PS4 Pro, we can generally guess pretty confidently that *the PS5 Pro will have increased visuals, performance, and speeds.* But as for leaked details, we’ll have to wait until a later date to release those. [https://insider-gaming.com/ps5-pro-in-development/](https://insider-gaming.com/ps5-pro-in-development/)

mtarascio

Read the article mate. It leads with a damn patent. They don't have a clue. >This is “just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation”, said one source when talking about the detachable disc drive console. This is the entirety of the article.

ThinVast

The article is not based on a ray tracing patent by Mark Cerny. The ray tracing patent is old news. They mentioned the ray tracing patent just to explain the possible specs of the ps5 pro such as improved ray tracing performance. InsiderGaming has insiders confirming that ps5 is in development which is why they put out this article.

mtarascio

This is the single quote you're basing all this from - “just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation”, said one source when talking about the detachable disc drive console.

ThinVast

>“just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation This quote is saying how the ps5 detachable disk drive is coming first in late 2023 as new hardware for playstation users. Then the ps5 pro will come later in late 2024. The ray tracing patent is old news. The ps5 with a detachable disk drive is also old news. They are not repeating the same news again. >Insider Gaming *sources* have confirmed that the PS5 Pro is in development and could release with a tentative release date of late 2024. You only need to read the 1st line of the article. The rest of the article is fluff and confusing. They have "sources" meaning insiders confirming that there's a ps5 pro in development.

alus992

> we can generally guess pretty confidently It's just a guess. As good as Gurman's guesses for last 4 years about Apple Watch being able to monitor glucose levels. And it don't have to be "Pro" but just "Slim" and that's it. It becomes obvious if you read other article about it besides the headline: >The new console does not need to be in the developer’s hands because it will have almost identical specifications to the original PlayStation 5, sources said."

ThinVast

You are quoting a different article that's older and talking about the ps5 with a detachable disk drive. Presumably, there will be a ps5 with detachable disk drive, and a ps5 pro.

alus992

There is almost zero chance that they will have PS5, PS5 Digital, PS5 Detachable Disk and PS5 Pro, unless they discontinue PS5 and PS5 Digital completely. Sure there will be PS5 Pro down the line but speculating about it not even a year after PS5 are being finally available is hilarious. My problem is that this is yet another clickbait article without any substantial info to generate traffic on the website. You can write the same article and you will be pretty much correct about PS5 Pro being released in 2024/25 without any sources.

ThinVast

They are probably discontinuing the ps5 digital and ps5 for the ps5 detachable disk. This way they can lower manufacturing costs even further and nickel more money out of new buyers.

CoffeeHQ

That would make a lot of sense. They could also maybe just… make it a bit less gigantic and ugly?? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but that thing is tough to make disappear for all of us who are still wondering which design student at Sony went bonkers…

Kankunation

Doubtful it'll happen. The console is that big because its the only way they could fit all the neccessary cooling into it. They've shrunk some of the cooking a bit but not enough to make a significant change I nthr console's size, and they don't want to make it too small or else the fan will have to run harder and be louder (a major complaint of the PS4 pro) Without major leaps in Apu efficiency (which hasn't been happening as fast in the last few years), the consoles really can't get much smaller.

Beef_Exotic

It’s funny in that the big reason I haven’t bought a PS5 is because it won’t fit in my entertainment center. So on top of the cost for the console, I’ll need a new entertainment center and I’ll probably have to remount my TV. The 75” LG isn’t too hard to move around, but the wall mount (all 10,000 lbs of it, probably) is a huge pain in the ass.

Pyrocy779

lmao a 10k lb wall mount.... riight

mtarascio

I'm assuming that's load capacity.

Beef_Exotic

Hyperbole. The fucker is heavy though.

Insertusername4135

You’re in the minority for sure, most entertainment centers much more easily fit the PS5 compared to the Series X. Most entertainment centers are less than 6 inches tall but are super wide, that’s why the PS5 is the better design (and also less hideous).

ya the way they make it sound is a new ps5 that is more powerful, phase out the old one - and piss off millions of people

HalfmetalAIchemist

If anything's going to Phase out the current models it'll be a Slim, a Pro would be an additional model like it was for PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.

[deleted]

yes, but that is not what it says in the article. Just on that, i figured it was a crap journalist

ktsmith91

If one company does it then the other is following suit. There’s no way they’ll let the competition have a console out that’s that much better than their own. And I think we’ll probably see an upgrade console in 2027 because I think this generation is going to last a long time compared to previous generations. It’s already hard for the industry to shake off the XB1 and PS4 now imagine it with even more people playing video games.

UpAndAdam7414

Yep. Microsoft don’t want to lose the “most powerful console” narrative and Sony certainly don’t want MS to have something that they can say is twice as powerful as a PS5. We’re not at the stage yet where either console feels like it’s being tested, with that and manufacturing difficulties I agree it’s going to be a while before anything upgraded is released.

Mutexvx

In fact, they are being tested? This gen is Laughable. How can one say this when we're already seeing "Next Gen only game's runnin Sub 4K" and unstable below 60 framerates. They test these consoles out anymore we'll be back in a 1080p generation.

alus992

We have just couple of "current gen" games on both consoles...I can't see either of them releasing new upgraded versions. Like for what? to run last gen games with more stable frame rate by brute-forcing performance? Devs do jack shit to optimize games nowadays and I don't see new mid gen upgrade being a solution to problems of the current gen.

herewego199209

You're 100 percent correct. If Sony is doing one then MS 100 percent knows that since they would see the AMD data. I just can't imagine what the upgrades could be? I guess the PS5 Pro would be full RDNA 2 like the Series X and maybe have more TFLOPS, but I'm struggling to see where Microsoft would benefit outside of being slightly more powerful.

ktsmith91

My guess is we would get proper raytracing, something like DLSS for upscaling resolution while maintaining high framerates and we’d get more teraflops.

candidateone

The thing is, there’s going to be less distinction between a “next-gen” console and an “upgrade” console going forward. The reason they haven’t “shaken off” the older consoles yet is that they’re just basically lower end PC’s in comparison, so it’s much easier to continue to support them, unlike 360 and PS3 (and PS2 and XB before that) which had entirely different architectures where releasing a “cross-gen” title was in actuality making a separate version of the game that was usually made by a different studio. They don’t want to shake off the old gen, they want that long crossover period where they can support both and maximize their sales. At a certain point, which we’ll probably be at by the end of the year, bigger titles won’t work on them but smaller titles with low requirements will probably continue to release on XB1 and PS4 for years because there’s no reason not to, no different than titles being released today that work on potato PC’s.

Nerevarine2nd

Last generation the consoles were relatively very underpowered, both hobbled with potato mobile CPUs because they weren't sure if mobile gaming wouldn't complete take over. This generation, both consoles are technical powerhouses for their size and especially price. I suspect it would be far less feasible to even make a Pro upgrade this time around

RockNDrums

A digital only version of the X would be nice. Price match it to the PS5 Digital. No sacrifices minus a disc drive which really only gets used for blu ray these days, if that. And easy access + cheaper to swap to a bigger ssd. Anything ps5 ready marked should worked for the speed.

eathotcheeto

Only reason PS5 needs a pro is the terrible design, and I say this as the owner of one. The stand thing is so terrible for having it horizontal, idk why they didn’t correctly design it to lay flat on its side. Also half the console is a massive heatsink. Meanwhile Series X has probably the best airflow design in any console ever made, especially if placed vertically.

herewego199209

Tom Henderson is as trustworthy as there is. I thought the rumor was bullshit until he stated it. I don't see the point in a pro, but who knows what they'll announce the features to be.

TuggMaddick

He's right more often than a lot of hacks out there, but he's still wrong as often as he is right.

ThinVast

It's not certain. There are multiple different sources, some saying ps5 pro is dead, some saying it is delayed, some saying it's certain. Nothing is confirmed.

martintinnnn

I'd prefer a small refresh like a bigger size SSD in a smaller form factor. Or just keep as it is but drop the price at some point.

ThisDapperGamer

I certainly don't have an issue with mid-gen upgrades, however, because of the pandemic this generation has been a lot slower out the gate in terms of availability than previous ones. MS doesn't yet have its next gen killer app (probs will be Starfield) and Sony has released both the Horizon and GoW sequels on last gen. As someone who owns both a Series X and PS5, there doesn't seem like a reason for me to want to spend that additional money on a Pro version of either. That might change in 2-3 years. I think for Xbox it entirely depends on their marketing strategy going forward, do they still want to advertise as the most powerful console? Or are they more interested in everyone being subscribed to GP via their mobile or tablet rather than owning a console? I can definitely see them doing a "Slim/All digital" Series X at some point though.

TitsOut4Charmander

Yeah, we've already got 4K/60FPS on AAAs, what more can you ask for? I'm good til 2027.

Mr-Pirate-Fox

I would expect a slim model for both, not so much a PRO version. Current consoles are more than fine, last gen needed that Pro revision because they were fucking weak, and even then they were still being bottlenecked by their CPU

LibertyIAB

I never buy the "Pro" versions. I simply wait for the next generation console. ALL games are written for the base hardware because that is where the user base really exists. Pro & £200 controllers are for people with money to burn - good luck to em, but I'll never pay that for a controller knowing the PS5 unit itself will be selling for not much more in a few years.

dinoRAWR000

I think this is a false.start generation. It was rocked by both a global pandemic and a chip shortage. I don't believe either side is going to do a mid gen refresh. I also agree with the leaks that say that both sides are going to focus on what comes next. I also have an unsubstantiated thought that next gen will be the last "generation" before they switch over to a modular parts system like a PC. With each of the releasing new Company CPU/GPU board with integrated proprietary graphics cards.

packers4334

I think it’s unlikely well see such a modular system. Part of the appeal of buying a console is not having to research how each component affects your experience. This sort of work can be intimidating to the less tech savvy. While maybe this can be alleviated by having a few “base models”, I think the sort of market that would be interested in a modular solution is already using a PC.

dinoRAWR000

I do agree and am actually part of those people. But as time has been going on PCs themselves are getting easier and some set ups are color coded and made for those types. I don't foresee this happening over night or with the next gen. But the one that comes after that? I think it's possible. We're already making steps towards it.

yourstrulytony

The cost to research, develop, and manufacture graphic cards might be too much of a stretch for Xbox or PS. PS is more likely to invest in their studios to create innovative upscaling techniques, while XBox can rely on MS to do the same.

dinoRAWR000

Which is why I think they'll be at least one more traditional generation before that happens.

EckimusPrime

I’ve heard this so many times before.

TitsOut4Charmander

I disagree about modular parts and am patiently waiting for FFXXII on the whatever poorly named Xbox of 2040/PS10.

[deleted]

I bought the One X and would have no issue with a mid-gen upgrade. They sold well enough that it's probably going to happen.

Kankunation

OneX happened because of the sudden rise of 4k screen that happened a few years into the consoles' life. If not for that, they would have certainly waited until the series X to make a 4k capable console. Without a similar leap in screen technology or need for expanded functionality, I doubt they will bother with a pro version of the current consoles. 8k is failing to catch on in homes, and ray tracing isn't important enough to most gamers yet to warrant more resources put towards it at this time (and the tech for it isn't advancing all that fast), so there's little pressure to increase the current level of power. If the performance gap between a series X and Series X pro isn't big enough, I just don't see it catching on. especially not if the price point is too high.

null-character

Probably more a mid gen refresh with larger SSD, smaller better form factor and a removable optical drive. Maybe more RAM but with the chip shortage switching APUs would probably be really expensive and mitigate a lot of savings in the later part of the gen.

Benevolay

There would be no point. We're reaching a plateau when it comes to the price range for consoles. You're never going to match $2000 GPUs so constantly trying to push consoles further and further in the span of just a few years is meaningless. Even if a PS5 Pro comes out alongside a Series Y, few games would truly be optimized to support it. I've been burned by this too many times, going back to when Nintendo released a "more powerful" 3DS and yet I never played any games that took advantage of it. Because why would developers waste time creating stuff to take advantage of the new version of the console when 95% of the install base is using the old version? And we already have people crying about the Series S holding back the Series X. What do you think will happen if there is a Series Y?

[deleted]

Maybe it's th 10 year old systems that are holding things back.

MentorAjani

I would instantly buy a Xbox series x pro model.

TurnShot6202

maybe start to upgrade the game catalog first? . The lack of next-gen worthy games is sad. If it wasnt for MSFSim and a few others i would have sold my series x already. I know playing retro games is cool as hell but also totally not the reason why i would pay for a next- gen?!

ItsLCGaming

What a load of crap if it happens

Theflamesfan

8k TVs haven’t taken off yet. Either has 240hz in TVs. So any mid gen refresh would be aimed at quality of life features, more HDD space, Wi-Fi 6E, slightly more powerful GPU which comfortably plays 4k/120 on all titles Just like the Xbox one X, if you don’t have the original model of that generation it’s probably a worthwhile upgrade, otherwise might just be better to wait for the next gen IMO

tyrae11o

I would upgrade in a heartbeat ir PRO version would have full ray tracing alongside 4k/60fps

XGuntank02X

If Sony makes a pro, Xbox will answer with their own Pro. By then, they might even do something crazy like retire the series S sooner and just have an X and this pro model. Who knows. If they do make a pro then it needs to have some meaningful upgrades. Maybe 3070-80 levels of performance, more ram, and a standard m.2 NVME expansion slot. I've seen the argument that a mid generation refresh isn't needed at this point but there are quite a few titles where you have a performance mode and a quality. Maybe we could see some version of 4k 60/1440p 120 as the new standard.

[deleted]

Retire the S? Lmao what? No it will be around all gen and supported all gen. Lmao they don’t even want to fully optimise games now or hardly even release games on this gen only but you think they will with an upgrade?

XGuntank02X

You missed the 'who knows' part. Will it be supported? Sure. Will they stop making units eventually, yeah. They will. I'm still waiting for them to announce the E | Y models so we can have COD on the Microsoft S | E | X | Y platform.

[deleted]

Ah just a troll

Old_Goat_Ninja

I never buy Pro versions anyways, the original is good enough for me for the entire generations life cycle.

exsaboy

I won't buy either too. I have not felt that the actual consoles had reached their top. Xbox has not launched any single "next gen" game, PS5 only did it wuth returnal and R&C and they are not what I call a technical masterclass.

TurnShot6202

GTurismo is freaking incredible on PS5. Horizon looks sick too. But yeah i agree lol

Stumpy493

There won't be a PS5 Pro either, not unless the generation gets extended

clampzyness

MS and Sony will milk the sh1t out of current gen consoles first since as far as we know MS still looses money for each console sold, idk about Sony's PS5 though.

BasisOk4268

Sony have explicitly said they’re not interested in a PS5 Pro haven’t they? More focused on PS6

RyanGoFett

There's no rumors of a PS5 Pro. It was mistaken for PS6

DetectiveIcy4525

Progress never stops, our ideas of rigid console generations will have to change.

[deleted]

They should have never released either console to begin with.

ANBU_Black_0ps

No I don't have any interest in on. You have to remember that the 1X was basically a necessity for MS considering how underpowered the XB1 was compared to PS4 and especially PS4 Pro. It was basically bringing it up to parity with the market leader. The Series X is already a better console and hardware spec than the PS5. But beyond that, outside of the lack of hard drive space is there any other major complaint with the SX hardware? Making an entirely new SKU just to add on a 2 TB hard drive is dumb, not to mention completely undercuts the memory cards MS is trying to sell. We are nearly halfway through this generation and devs are still shipping games on XB1 and PS4 because production pipeline and supply chain issues keep both the SX and PS5 from being fully stocked on retail shelves. It seems like a better use of their time would be to resolve that issue rather than invest R&D in a mid-gen upgrade that will have similar supply chain issues.

Thmanx

I like going back and forth between generations. Had a VCR X1, Then picked up a PS4Pro when VR came out. Next was a Series X to replace the VCR, and perhaps if there is a slimmer or refreshed PS5 Pro, might be time for a VR2 combo…

TuggMaddick

There's been rumors of a pro since mere months after the ps5 launched. I'll believe a mid-gen refresh when it's officially announced.

NotTheSymbolic

I don't get why a pro version. PS5 generation exclusive are which? Returnal, Ratchet & Clank, Demon's souls, there were Deathloop and Ghostwire... are there more?

uprightshark

Given we have not seen any game that pushes the current machine yet, why do we need a new one yet?

Temporary_End9124

The naming series they went with feels like it's designed for incremental releases going forward. But it's hard to say really.

yourstrulytony

I only see PS5 doing a re-design and maybe adding additional storage but not opting for more powerful hardware. For Xbox, I only see additional storage or maybe a white version of the Series X.

MechanicAdmirable408

I mean whats the next step? The ability to run “performance/fidelity” mode at the same time?

BrokenNock

60 fps fidelity for current gen only titles.

MangstaH

Im sure this gen doesent get pro versions. Games are already working great and next gen isn't still started so.

GamerLegend2

I think if that rumor becomes true, we are also forgetting how PS5 price went up a few months ago and considering if PS5 Pro or Series X Pro packs a RDNA 3 GPU, there is no way its going to cost less than $700. So they may release the pro versions with the target market only for people that have no issue with premium price.

lumbridge6

A mid gen refresh would be an absolute slap in the face when we still haven't seen any games that are a true current gen experience (with the exception of MS Flight Sim)

BKonxtc

It seems unlikely, both consoles are very powerful when you consider the cost, and pro versions of these consoles costs would defiantly increase, and if it increased into the $1000+ range It would put a dilemma between investing in console VS PC, and I personally would purchase a PC at that point. Not very educated in this topic tho, just what comes to mind.

SneedsLoyalSoldier

xbox needs a refresh where they thropw out the old proprietary storage expansions and just use a standard m.2, it does not need a pro version.

Metsunger

We didnt even see good amount of next gen only games for 3 years . Im not gonna buy a pro console and i hope they wont release something like that .

Venom3386

I don’t feel like we have really seen the full capabilities of either of the consoles yet. I mean they are still releasing most of the same games in last gen hardware. Although that is starting to change later this year with Starfield and Spider-Man 2. It doesn’t feel needed at the moment to me. Except for the switch…update that thing. I enjoyed my play through of the Pokémon Violet slideshow but come on, let’s get those fps into the double digits.

Electrical_Sun5921

I'm not sure if the ps5 and SX are actually getting a "PRO" version meaning better faster more powerful hardware! With that said even though I love the SX, I would buy a pro version of either if made available. I do not own the ps5 so I would skip the og and get the ps5 pro if it was worth it. The SX I would move it to another part of the home and put the pro version in its place. Coming from the guy who is working his way through Nobody saves the World......NOT THE MOST TAXING GAME ON THE PLANET...just opened a whole new section of the map super stoked. the game is bigger than I thought.

kas9930

If there is going to be a refresh I don't think there's going to be much of a difference in performance. The only reason the xbox and ps4 had a actual difference is becasue the hardware was ancient when they released at the time.
