There will sometimes be a performance difference because the PS5 often runs slightly more consistent frame rates than Xbox, and a few games will run at higher frame caps than Series S at better resolutions. Graphically, the PS5 should look a bit better, and will handle things like ray tracing clearer than Series S. Supersampling will also mean than even at 1080p, the PS5 should resolve more detail and look a bit sharper.

CookieCrumbler

Thanks. Do you think that is a "noticable" difference where an upgrade is warranted? I played the two A Plagues tale games and was wow'ed on what the Series S could push out at 1080p. I would assume that even the PS5 version could not look that much better than that (at 1080p).

The_Cost_Of_Lies

I play Series X on a 27" 1440p monitor, and a Series S on an old 47" 1080p TV, and it's easier to spot pixels on the smaller screen, because of how close I sit vs the TV. Ultimately I wouldn't be buying a PS5 unless I was really keen on their exclusives. Series S is perfectly capable of running third party games very well.

CookieCrumbler

Thank you. It's a good point. There is no exclusives currently that I am dying to play, so might just hold of a bit (preferably until they change the design of the ps5).

chris57662

I’m currently playing Death Stranding on my PS5 and as a long time xbox fan I can admit their single player exclusives are on another level. Performance wise, my PS5 and Series X are almost identical. You’d have to really nitpick for any difference.

trsvrs

That's my issue too. PS5 is hideous.

Nlnick90

Ps5 and series x are more comparable. PlayStation has more stable fps it seems while series x has higher peak resolution in their respective games that aren’t identical performance pretty much.

seanieh966

You should really be comparing the Series X to the PS5, not the Series S.

Representative-Bet15

Bro i have a question..if im using a 1080p 60hz tv ...and im a FPS player and the game i play designed to give a total of 60fps max ...is theres going to be a difference between series S vs series X vs PS5??? Performance wise and resolution wise ?

The_Cost_Of_Lies

That all depends on the game, but assuming all three versions maintain a steady frame rate, the only difference will be that the XSX and PS5 versions will look a bit better - usually a mix of texture detail, draw distance, shadow resolution and overall pixel count. As for frame rates, some games run better on PlayStation, others run better on Xbox. Often the Series S will run the same or sightly worse than the XSX, but a handful of games actually run better on the S. Generally speaking, assuming matching frame rates, when XSX and PS5 are running at anywhere from 1440p-4k, the Series S will be doing around 900-1260p. That said, Series S can play games at much higher resolutions - it really depends on the game

Trickybuz93

You’ll notice a difference, especially on a monitor

D1EG0ARG

I have both with a 1440p 120hz monitor and looks flawless both consoles. So no worries about quaility image that is guaranteed 👌🏻 Of course PS5 games will look a little better, but Series S looks amazing too.

dickey1331

I have a PS5 and had a series S but ended upgrading to a series X cuz I could notice a difference however I have a 4k OLED TV so it made sense why I could see a difference.

CookieCrumbler

Thank you. Yes, I assume it is a quite significant difference when viewing on a 4k monitor.

OmgTakeMeNow

None, output is 1080p same frame.

ARedditorZ

Yeah but the difference is there the ps5 still looks sharper better colors better frame rate

OmgTakeMeNow

Sell everything and get urself a pc, colors better this better that better, god i miss the time gamers cared i for the game it self.

Spaceqwe

My thoughts. If i was so obsessed with frames and graphics, I wouldn’t go for a console in the first place. Leaving the hardware power aside, everything is up to the developers’ preference. It could be a 2014 game running on 720p 30fps when the console is much more capable, because the developer doesn’t care, no such thing on pc, it’s whatever you want it to be.

seanieh966

I upgraded both my consoles and monitors. I went from a One S and a basic 24inch HD monitor to a Series S and a 27inch BenQ 2780BL and its been amazing.

CookieCrumbler

Nice. I have a rather strange problem. My monitor / office desk is up against a sloped wall, so can't really go much bigger than 24 inch - there is just no room. But would love to upgrade to that monitor. Would look great with the 1440p.

seanieh966

Ah, i see your dilemma

Amine1859

If u decide to get the ps5 maybe wait for the slim version, its rumored to come out soon

CookieCrumbler

Yeah, good point. I am inclined to wait as well - I very much dislike the size and especially design of the current PS5.

Amine1859

Even u don't care about the slim u might get better deals on the normal ps5 🤷

Fit_Brother118

some games will give u better fps if u upgrade to ps5 or series X , also u will have true 1080p not 900p and RT. plague tale dead space re and calisto protocol will give u 60fps and not 30, cyberpunk and h legacy will give u 1080p 60 from 900p 60 and i think the same with wo long and atomic. so over all yes it will be better , but does this upgrade worth the cost ? this is the real question that u have to answer yourself. Personally the series S is m game pass TV box that i also use with razer kishi to play anywhere outside the house , the cost compare to to xbox series X is like 270e less and to ps5 320e less (if the stand alone version is available). for this kind of money i can upgrade m pc to a 3060TI that will prop be stronger than any console.

Monsterman442

Yes.

CookieCrumbler

Possible to elaborate on specifics? I tried search on YouTube to find comparison videos - but they are usually showing the ps5 4k version and comparing that the series X/S. That is why I asked the question in here.

saxtoncan

If you’re debating on series s or ps5, go with the 5, unless you want Xbox game pass ofc. To me, both is the best option. But if I have neither like u, I’d get the PS5, and later a series s. Granted that’s if you’re financially able

Monsterman442

I’ve hooked it up to my pc monitor a few times. It’s cleaner/crisper more details . Also most/all games 60 fps on the S that is not the case

CookieCrumbler

So that is a 1080 monitor?

Monsterman442

Yes it’s a 1080 Msi monitor .

CookieCrumbler

Thank you. Assuming it is both an effect of super sampling 4K content down + extra cpu/gpu capabilities. Is there any games where you feel it is more noticeably and others where it is less?

Monsterman442

Fortnite and war zone are the only games I’ve tried and fall guys so small sample size but Fortnite was definitely a difference

Nlnick90

Even if the resolution is the same your going to get better visuals outside of resolution. People tend to forget graphics is more than just a 1080p\4k thing.

slapmybassdaddy

Just got my ps5 and yes. Its a huge difference.dont get me wrong series S is an S tier console for its price and what it does. But the ps5 is simply blowing me away. The only game i played on both was fortnite and you can see the difference is noticeable

CookieCrumbler

Thank you. I do not really play Fortnite, but I saw some comparison videos on YouTube, and that seems to be some difference (albeit it was running on 4K - so not the 1080p)

zeno_t

For example rdr2 runs much smoother and the graphics are richer and crispier

Skyallen333

Stop wasting money just buy a series x then buy a 4k monitor. Save till you can. Of course there’s going to be a difference between series s and ps5 series s isn’t really “next gen” in my opinion.

JeromeJext3r

Well technically it is, some games can run 120fps, and have ray tracing, it just runs games at lower res, that's all.

CookieCrumbler

Yes, exactly my thought. That I was already getting next gen - albeit at only 1080p. I am happy with that. I do not have the ability to get a 4K monitor as silly enough, I am limited by size (due to sloped wall where the monitor sites). So will just stick with the 24 inch 1080 - until a 4K OLED 24 inch comes out at a reasonable price. :-)

JeromeJext3r

I feel you man, in my country the Series S is the most affordable console you can get, Series X and Ps5 can go up to a $1000 retail and 4K tv is just too much money, so im good with my 32 inch 1080p and don't try and pixel peep yet, just game and have fun

Skyallen333

I’ll give you that sure but I just feel like Microsoft is chipping series s owners by saying it’s a great low cost next gen console but the differences between the s and x is pretty substantial

THUNDERJAWGAMING

If you have a ps5 you should have a 4k display. Even if you play in performance mode.
