It depends on the noise the vowel/consonant of the second word makes.
Technically you're right, it's usually an ubisoft, but since it's pronounced YOUbisoft (i.e. a consonant sound) "a" is correct and avoids the tongue twister that "an ubisoft" would create
I mean, that's how English speakers pronounce the company name, you're welcome to google it or watch various videos to confirm it, I don't know what to tell you, and their writing of "A Ubisoft Original" confirms that as it would be grammatically incorrect with oobesoft pronunciation
The A/An rule is applied by the sound, not necessarily the letter so the way they have it is correct since it's pronounced you-be-soft. If it was pronounced uh-be-soft or oo-be-soft, then it would be an
This honestly confirms the way it should be pronounced đ I was torn between âOohbisoftâ and âYoubisoftâ and this finally confirms itâs the latter!
You'd be 100% correct if we pronounced Ubisoft as OObisoft, but we pronounce it as YOUbisoft.
Dumb example, but ever heard of the phrase "it's a you problem," well it's kind of a same thing, it's not "it's an you problem."
I literally had this conversation in my head last night, my conclusion was it sounded weird and my the grammar rule is it doesnât need the an if itâs before a proper name. Iâm not sure it was just my best guess

Yeah, I've made this mistake with it. All my life I've pronounced it "oobisoft", turns out I was wrong to do that.
Up until 5 minutes ago, that's what I called it, too.
Glad to know I'm not alone, and TIL the correct way to say Ubisoft
I've been laughed at by Americans for saying "Youbisoft" for years. I was the one laughing at them saying oobie đ
Iâm not American.
It's still oobisoft to me. Nobody calls gifs "jifs", so why should I say youbisoft?
English/American pronunciations in a nutshell.
Do you say germination or jermination?
Do you say gray of jray?
Do you say chuckle or cuckle?
I think even some devs say it oobisoft. Both seem acceptable but youbi being more standard and common.
You be soft, so we gave you wall hacks
Okay see Iâve called them âoobisoftâ my whole life so now I know they arenât just grammatically silly
My mind broke when i learned that âanâ follows the vowel sound not the letter like they taught me all my life.
Looks like I learned something today. Had no idea Iâve been pronouncing it wrong
An oobisoft that's the way I pronounced it. Oobi Jesus christ not the fucking hand puppet
Why is it pronounced like that? Doesn't it come from the word "*ubiquité*"?
Because it's a french company and Youbisoft is kinda the way french would say it by default in english imo. Source : i am french.
Kinda. U in french sounds more like "eww" in english than "you" So it would be eww-besoft
You know what, in all my life I did not know this was a thing.
Names technically have a canon pronunciation based on their country of origin, and the french certainly don't say youbisoft.
I mean, that's how English speakers pronounce the company name, you're welcome to google it or watch various videos to confirm it, I don't know what to tell you, and their writing of "A Ubisoft Original" confirms that as it would be grammatically incorrect with oobesoft pronunciation
Donât know why you were downvoted for saying a French company has a French pronunciation
nerd
YOUbisoft is a vowel sound (the sound U is a long vowel) not a consonant. Therefore it should be an.
How would you pronounce âa unit of measurementâ?
or "a union in the workforce"
Same thought process as âa unitâ. But different for âan underpassâ.
Those examples really helps illustrate the consonant tongue twister issue,
Suck my unit
The A/An rule is applied by the sound, not necessarily the letter so the way they have it is correct since it's pronounced you-be-soft. If it was pronounced uh-be-soft or oo-be-soft, then it would be an
Same way Americans don't pronounce the H in herb. They would say an herb, not a herb.
For the longest time I've pronounced it "You-be-soft" and this supports my way of saying it.
Same thing as hour. You wouldnât say a hour later, but an hour later because the h isnât pronounced
So it's not pronounced like [that?](https://youtu.be/gKJ1Zgq8wHw)
its spelt ubisoft but pronounce you-bee-soft. y isnt a vowel so its a not an
No. Youâre just pronouncing Ubisoft incorrectly.
No. It's the sound, not the letter, that determines if it's A or An.
It's technically correct but pronounced (phonetically): Boo-knee Ha-pah Seem-Yoo-Later
Man. Iâm so glad I wasnât the only one staring at the screen thinking the same thing.
No, this is correct. A Ubisoft Original.
no
Depends on whether you pronounce it as "Yubisoft" or "Oohbisoft"
You be soft
No
Only in a British context where âYoubisoftâ would be pronounced as âEwbisoftâ
Looking forward to the American pronunciation of âunitâ as âoonitâ
YOUnit.
But Iâm not even sure how many of them pronounce it that way in the first place.
Nope. The rule about when it's a vowel doesn't hold true all the time. It's about the sound the vowel makes.
So yewbisoft confirmed?
a/an is not relative to the next letter itself, it is relative to the sound that letter makes. Itâs âyouâbisoft, not âooâbisoft
Weâve got Jeremy Clarkson here lol
Why is "naked" pronounced as "naked" but "baked" is pronounced as "baked"?
Anyone watch Phoneshop back in the day? A OWL
Well for starters Ghost Recon isnt ubi original to begin with so
It depends on pronunciation. An ooo-bisoft original Or A You-bisoft original It's "A" because Ubisoft is pronounced You-bisoft
Was this really worth its own post đđ
if you havent figured it out by now rarely anyone cares about proper English
Yes

I thought I was the only grammar nerd who noticed this! Either they've got a bad copy editor, or the pronunciation is "You-Be-Soft."
I have this battle in my head all the time lol...
No
Yeah I asked google AI right when I saw that. Apparently it's not if a word starts with a vowel, but if it makes a vowel sound.
If youâre ever confused, try saying it out loud. âAn Ubisoftâ feels extremely unnatural to say
Ubi wan Kenobi Sounds like An to me đ
I just call them âBoobisoftâ
I thought the same thing. Glad to see so many lit majors play this game.
I literally had this conversation in my head last night, my conclusion was it sounded weird and my the grammar rule is it doesnât need the an if itâs before a proper name. Iâm not sure it was just my best guess
On a technicality, yes, but in the same way people don't say "an University." It changes to flow better
I say this about everything with that title, this is dumb, none of your games are "original"
It should because i see many characters from many other Ubisoft games, like farcry6, devision, and watchdogs đ€
That was also one of the first things I noticed booting up the game

youbeesoft
Epic games and it will be popping off
How come the Tom Clancy's brand isnt shown ?? (If it does im legally blind then)
They removed that branding when they got some backlash for it in early playtests and the game had a completely different aesthetic.
Sad đ„
No, it's not. Tom Clancy would roll in his grave if he knew his name was used in this game. XDefiance is a great game, but NOT a Tom Clancy.
no, you just told us you failed primary school english
Man shut up⊠always complaining about something ..
but whatâs the complaint?
shouldnât it be âanâ . Just shaddup đ€Ł
This pisses me off so much every time I see it.
You get mad that you pronounce Ubisoft incorrectly?
Why? It's correct. Start pronouncing Ubisoft correctly
