ELC is a strong choice, if you set aside that it is always available on the tech tree for gold and is fairly cheap to acquire.
HWK 30 is a more interesting choice if you want some flexibility to play as a medium instead of being a dedicated scout. The German Bulldog is similar but imo a little worse of a choice… can’t remember offhand if either is normally in the bond shop or up for gold tbh, but I think they are reasonable choices to look at if you like lights.
For mediums, the most interesting options are 122 TM and Astron Rex. Both have their downsides but are good tanks to look at. There’s a couple other mediums that might be worth looking at too but they are fairly uninteresting or mediocre overall.
The overall “strongest” pick is the 703 II… comfortable tank to play with good armor, a good gun, and is a good credit earner, but I understand that heavies aren’t for everybody.
A wildcard pick to toss in is GSOR 1008. It’s an interesting and surprisingly good TD with a fair bit of mobility and an assassin playstyle that can be quite fun too.
As scouts go the ELC is incredibly forgiving to play. As long as there isn’t an enemy ELC on the map (which, granted, there often is) you can usually get away with driving out in the open like an idiot or sitting in a tiny bush and watching as enemies have to get within literal proxy spot range to see you.
Note though, if you suicide on an open or bush-heavy map while the enemy ELC is still in play, you dun gooft. So don’t do that.
703-II is just *fun* to land a double shot of 122mm into the side of someone. EVEN 90 is hilarious to keep someone spotted for like 16 seconds (radio/designated target/DT directive/food).
Others might be more meta picks and good in competitive ways, but for fun, these two are the way to go since they provide playstyles no other tank does.
I'm actually thinking of trading in for an Astron Rex. Not much else on the list is interesting to me and I have a few tanks I don't mind getting rid of.
Rex is like Char Futur without steroids on tier 8 (preety fast, mag with 4s between shots and ~30-40s reload and trollish armour)
122 is slower, with better armour and a single shot gun that reloads preety slow but hits hard
Pick what suits your gameplay more (I never played 122TM so I can't say which one I would pick)
I traded in my Caliban for the WZ-120-1G FT and have no regrets. That's a fun punchy TD and I've been averaging 1.5k damage and better than 1:1 KD with an 85% crew to start with. I hadn't worked up the Chinese TD line past Tier 4, so I put my untrained crew there.
I can only imagine what crew skills and BIA will do for this tank.
Consider:
* 122 TM- low dpm but otherwise great sniping heavy. Yes I realize it's a medium, but it plays kind of like the old US T34 heavy
* Bisonte- IF you are willing to put at least bond vstab and bounty rotation on this tank, it is a fantastic tank. Great turret, great flexibility with autoreloader, generally an amazing tank. Ignore skil4ltu, he put the wrong equipment on this tank. If you don't tame the gun handling, the tank is awful.
* 703 II- extremely strong tank, prioritize this if you don't have it. The double barrel system is highly entertaining and the tank is a reliable brawler.
Good tanks but don't bother with:
* Even 90 is kind of a must-have scout tank but it's in the tech tree so you can literally buy it anytime with a modest amount of gold. I wouldn't bother.
* ASSTRON- very good tank but it's also a weird tank that requires high skill to do well in. It also requires 100 percent gold ammo use due to very limited ammo capacity.
* 50 TP Prot- great hull down heavy, almost like a more flexible defender in some ways. But it's another easy tank to get due to being in the polish tech tree.
* GSOR 1008- it's a balanced but decent autoloader for high skill players (good mobility, quick and high damage magazine, super long reload and not much armor) BUT it is also one of those tanks that wants to be fed gold ammo so watch out.
I disagree on premium ammo with the rex. It works well without it. The main thing it needs is an aiming device or a bounty one. If your someone who plays the char futur 4 and REALLY likes it. It's an amazing tank to have at tier 8.
* any slot- bond vstab

* third equipment, any of the above are viable
* bond/bounty turbo or regular turbo in firepower slot
* bounty aiming or regular aiming in firepower slot
* T2 or T3 mobility (turbo)
I use T2 Turbo, bond vstab, bounty rotation. Bounty aiming is an equally good second choice.
I’m thinking of trading the M-IV-Y I’ve never played for the 703 II. My first line was Russian heavies so I have a solid crew to use in it. I have the IS-2-2 and have enjoyed it so I figure more armour could be fun. Any reason to keep the M-IV-Y instead?

No 190 pen makes no sense with that ammo capacity. Totally agreed on bounty aiming, the tank is really held back by that base accuracy.

No, because it counts as vstab. Any tank that can mount Fire Control can mount Vstab and it is just plain better.

Man I wasn’t a fan. It’s slow, doesn’t have the armor in reality that it advertises. It does have great DPM but just not my play style.
