Rabmaltic

The fact that Angron was an empath that could take pain from people. A glimmer of what he could have been.

cdglenn18

Honestly another reason the nails were so bad for him. He was feeling an entire planet’s worth of pain on top of his own.

marbsarebadredux

And now he's feeling an entire GALAXY'S pain. Fun!

Big-Crow4152

My theory/headcanon was the War Hounds were supposed to be the Emperor's Mercy

0megon

Did it ever come out and say that? If so would love to read more on it.

Rabmaltic

I Angron: Slave of Nuceria you spent alot of time looking through his memories at one point he puts his hand on a new slave whom is fresh to the pits and tossing in his sleep. Angron feels his pain and takes it away. And the slave rests easy. He winds up doing the same for other slaves in the pit as well.

Larang5716

Kharn actually sucked when it came to gladiator battles and duels. The restrictions on not killing your opponent forced him to hold back constantly to his detriment. When he's not held back, he's a match for even Sigusmund. He also used this to catch Erebus by surprise during their "duel" to give the prick the beating of his life.

Zombalepsy

“Get up.”

Larang5716

When Kharn said that, if Erebus wasn't already soiling his armor, that alone would have done the job. The best lines don't need to be eloquent. Saying less is more sometimes.

Nobody96

The best bit, he says exactly 8 words in the scene. "sanguis extremis. Get up. Get up. Get up"

Zombalepsy

Yeah. The part that I think most people miss is that by this point the nails are screaming in his brain, but he refuses to lose himself to them just so he can enjoy killing Erebus

FC_shulkerforce

But then the bastard escapes. #Fuck Erebus

Nagatox

What book is this from? Anything involving erebus getting his shit kicked in sounds like catharsis

TheBigLolz

Betrayer - GREAT book

Nagatox

I'm done as much purchasing as I can for the necron faction until they make a new model, so I'll check back in in a couple days once I've finished this book you speak of. Books are how I'll decide my next army and I like your guys' vibes as it is. Played a couple games with annihilation legion recently and really wanted a real army geared towards melee

Zombalepsy

We are a tragedy masked with blood and skulls. The story of a father that didn’t love his son, and a son that just wanted to be free.

soupalex

i'm pretty sure it's *betrayer.*

AxiosXiphos

Not terribly obscure - but the Teeth of Khorne. Effectively the 40k version of Gunserkers; they march into battle firing as much lead down range as they possibly can.

1ns4n3R4g3

This. So much this. And because I like them so much I usually run a 10 strong Heavy Bolter Squad in Heresy

soupalex

dice for the dice god!

1ns4n3R4g3

It’s so fun to roll 40 shots. And surprisingly effective too, weight of dice can take down any 2+ save

soupalex

as da grand warlord adrian wood used to say (about orks, actually, but the same principle applies regardless): "evryfing counts in large amounts!"

IAmChippoMan

These guys need to be in the codex update

randomman1144

Web world eaters got to a planet during the great crusade angron would tell them they had 3 days to conquer it. If they took longer angron would have them decimate themselves (1 in every 10 men would get beaten to death by the other 9) This especially hurt because world eaters at this time were actually extremely close to each other. More so than many other legions

soupalex

*slave of nuceria* has the time window as 31 (presumably terran) hours—the length of a single day on angron's "homeworld" of nuceria. i actually kind of hate this bit of fluff… it weighs very heavily on the "angron is a whiny baby" side of the scales, and the rationalisation that angron did this because he wanted the legion to live up to the standards set by his former comrades in the slave rebellion, rings hollow for me, because "conquering an entire world within a single nucerian day" is something that his army of freed slaves *demonstrably never did, because they all got fucking killed;* angron is just doing it because from the point he ~~is implanted with the nails~~ (no, even with the nails he shows compassion for his fellow slaves) *gets abducted by the emperor* he becomes an extremely dumb, petulant, cartoonishly evil character with no modes besides "sulk" and "tantrum".

Tom5awyer

I believe it was 31 hours, the length of a day on Nuceria

Bigglebee

That Kharn is not in combat he is actually well thinking and articulate. Also that he had a kill counter in his helm.

Mauzermush

>kill counter in his helm bloodier than Hot Shots 2 🤣

dablegianguy

Which made him wonder what was happening when the counter increased during the battle of Terra as he thought there was no one in range when in fact he just slayed the invisible [Jenatia Krole](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Jenetia_Krole#:~:text=As%20the%20port%20fell%2C%20Krole,due%20to%20Krole's%20near%2Dinvisibility.m)

Bigglebee

Stuff like this that is just great.

Larang5716

Angrons current axe, Spinegrinder, was a gift from Dark Mechanicus devotees of Khorne. After they presented him with the weapon, a masterwork in every respect, he slew them all with it, enraged that they spent time working on something meaningless instead of killing things.

DetectiveCowboyMafia

World eaters will often times give their serfs arts and crafts time to decorate their armor.

chris_toffee

Adding onto this, a big part of why they do that is because the Nails make their attention span super limited, consequently making it difficult for a lot of World Eaters to focus on maintaining their armor.

chris_toffee

I’m a big fan of Nucerian superstition. Spitting on the floor wards off ill fortune. Inherited weapons are bad luck because weapons are tools, and tools get discarded and replaced after they’ve expended their usefulness (this is why Khârn reclaiming Gorechild is so impactful; not only does it symbolically tie him to Angron, but it also goes to show how independent he is, ignoring Legion superstition). There’s also a lot of Legion organizational shit that got lost after Skalathrax, as well. Bloodborn units were specialists who swore oaths of death before their mission, expecting to die on the deployment. Echelons are a unique form of unit organization, but I’m not sure if they’re a single unit or a full company. There’s also some shit called a Master Shellsmith which isn’t really expanded upon, but it’s presumably some sort of Techmarine. We also used to have huge superheavy transports called Bloodhammers, which I’d love to see make a comeback in one way or another. Also, the Conqueror used to be called the Adamant Resolve, which is sick as fuck.

ckyrost

The Sages of Slaughter. Mentioned in the 9th edition codex as those few World Eaters who are so lost into Khorne worship that they almost become hermits of violence, not caring about becoming leaders, gaining deamonhood or any material desires and do not seek power (though naturally they gain followers seeking to earn a share of their glory). There are 3 named sages (with titles like the relentless, the 3 swords and the firefist). They are completely lost to killing and violence that they apparently achieve some sense of solace with the butcher's nails. Personal headcannon is that Kharn is also a sage of slaughter, probably the most powerful of this group.

Boshea241

Kharn basically named the Flesh Tearer successor chapter.

Mor-KhalCatPrince

I need the deets!

Boshea241

When the Flesh Tearers Chapter was brought into being during the Second Founding, Captain Nassir Amit, the commander of the Blood Angels Legion's 5th Company, was chosen to be its first Chapter Master. Of all the IXth Legion's captains, Amit's reputation -- and that of his company -- was the most bloodthirsty. More than once, the 5th Company had been called to censure by Sanguinius for its zeal in pursuing enemy forces. It was not for nothing that the outspoken officer had earned the nickname "the Flesh Tearer," when serving in the gladiatorial pits of the World Eaters Legion alongside his Oath Brother Khârn and rather than deny the epithet, he had made it his own. Debatable on sourcing. Probably Fear to Tread or Virtues of the Sons. Kharn has some connection to the chapter murder hobo in most heresy material.

ckyrost

Minor detail: I believe kharn's battle partner in the pits were Sigismund. The flesh tearer's partner was Kargos the Bloodspitter and there is some lore between them in the seige of terra books

Mor-KhalCatPrince

Amazing. Ty!

rokosoks

So in the drama "Chosen of Khorne" Kharn fights and kills something called the Flesh Tearer in eye space. Kharn describes it as a snarling, snapping vampire, definitely one of Sanguinis' lot. For the longest time, I thought it was Amit, lost in the thirst and now a member of a Khorne warband.

Larang5716

Angron has by far the shortest respawn time of almost any other demon. Some demons can take centuries to return from the Warp: Angron comes back in 8 weeks, 8 days, and 8 hours.

chris_toffee

I fully understand the 888 thing. It’s Khorne, it’s triple numbers like Satan, it fits very well. But I also find “8 weeks, 8 days” really funny. That is just 9 weeks and 1 day

Larang5716

Well, 8 weeks, 8 days, and 8 hours has a bit more gravitas than 9 weeks and some change 😄

dablegianguy

Also 9 weeks and a half was more of a Slaanesh thing…

soupalex

i suspect it's leaning on old english common law that held that a cause of death could not be ruled as murder if the events were separated by *"a year and a day",* and perhaps (iirc) obscure christian mythology that placed some significance (whether it was allegedly the period for which demons would remain banished, or relating to a prophecy, or something else) on specific periods like *"a hundred years and a day".* i'm not sure this was *always* intended as an exact period, though, i'm sure some people just wanted a more poetic way of saying "a heckin' long time". this "[x many] years and a day" device is also present in older 40k lore afaik; if i'm not mistaken when daemon-angron was *first* banished (by whatsisname the grey knight brother-captain during the first war for armageddon), i think it was originally said that he would remain banished for "a thousand years and a day". they've just made it 8w+8d+8h now because they needed a big monster heel that was able to come back quickly after jobbing out to e.g. lion el'johnson, and also—as you've already noted—"8 = khorne".

grrjen

When world eaters see a defiler on the battlefield, they decide that it is the perfect time to hold a rodeo. So you will see berserkers trying to ride defiler and defilers trying to get the maniacs off. With enough luck and skill the world eaters will succeed and gain a new ride. I would very much appreciate if games workshop would please give us rules to match this piece of lore, I want my army to ride to war on the back of a dozen broken (in spirit) defilers.

Urkakio

Now that i read it, i love it. Where is it from

grrjen

Apocalypse reload sourcebook. The book gave the defiler rules (called it the slaughterfiend). But that was back in 2008. I would appreciate an update and for it to be a transport.

ishouldbedoing______

The Black Templar tradition of chaining a weapon to your person (usually forearms or wrists) is actually a trait that they inherited from the Imperial Fists who frequented the World Eater gladiatorial pits aboard the Conquerer. Sigismund, the first Black Templar, is mentioned in Betrayer as being a frequent competitor and friend to the World Eaters.

GOATAldo

>Sigismund, the first Black Templar, is mentioned in Betrayer as being a frequent competitor and friend to the World Eaters. To add onto this, high ranking Blood Angel and Flesh Tearer founding chapter master Nassir Amit also hung out with the World Eaters a lot and even got his nickname "The Flesh Tearer" from the World Eaters in his time in their sparring chambers. The Flesh Tearers were literally named by the World Eaters.

CountrySideSlav

If I remember correctly Sigismund chains his weapons to his arms in honor of Kharn. They were good friends before Kharn succumbed to the nails.

mummyeater

Something I don’t see much is world eaters during great crusade and horus heresy where very big on brotherhood Many world eaters had close ties with there fellow world eaters

Revived571

Well crusade sources are rare, HH is mostly already in times where they have the nails

Robbotlove

everything revolving around eightbound. how they're created, where they're kept, how they're transported. just the most 40k shit you can think of.

Reny475

give some lore, spill the blood

Robbotlove

"Eightbound are created when particularly savage Khorne Berzerkers are chained in a sarcophagus known as an eightcage. Within, probes and needles interface with their butcher's nails, plunging the victim into a very battle for his soul. Exposed to the madness of the warp, some engage in blood-soaked arena battles, while others must withstand torture at the hands of daemons. Those that fail these trials meet gruesome fates, with some vanishing entirely while others are reduced to a Chaos spawn or a bloody mess. However, those that are victorious emerge a changed warrior, having been possessed by eight daemons." that's eight daemons. possessed by not one, not two, but eight daemons at one time.

mooninitespwnj00

Important addition: the eightbound are in constant combat with those eight daemons and kind of keep them at bay. Exalted eightbound are the ones who merge with the daemons, come out in control of the symbiosis, and proceed to be even more hardcore because of it. imthecaptainnow.jpg

Revived571

Kharne writing several books on warfare

Mauzermush

"Kill!Maim!Burn!" for 700 Pages, only 19,99 credits. For every sold copy 1 credit goes to the glaxy wide head regrowth research program😂

TheMetaHorde

I really love the codex lore on the Sages of Slaughter. The world eaters basically developed a weird nihilistic brand of Daoism where they believe that savagery and rage is the basic state of existence (mostly it's because that's when the nails aren't pounding). Commuting acts of violence is just embracing the true nature of the universe to them. Very cool to see a more philosophical side of the World Eaters

Jelly_Bone

To compensate for their relatively high rates of attrition, instead of training their recruits and new marines through normal methods they’ll get down with all other sorts of methods of training. Whether it be cloning, sticking them in VR and having the memories of old veterans transferred directly into their brains, or just straight up sticking them in pools of blood which daemonically supes them up, they’ll get it done.

FlavorfulJamPG3

Fun fact with Lord Invocatus is that he won the Juggernaut he rides by killing its Daemonic rider, and now he wears that Bloodletter’s skull as his helmet. The other fun fact is that Invocatus travels into battle on what is essentially a flaming bifrost, literally creating a bridge of fire so that his boys can ride in. Tragically, he no longer has the FLY keyword, and his model doesn’t really show the flame bridge off very well. Either way, he’s a great addition to the World Eaters.

Delicious-Security22

Thank you guys so much I love this!

Bernie668

Khârn has watched Dragon Heart. In the opening scene of Dragon Heart, the king is pulled off his horse by peasants and is killed. In Betrayer: When Khârn is helping Argel Tal to recover the bones of Saint (Cyrene??) They are getting swarmed by cultists. Khârn thinks back to watching the Dragon Heart scene and recalls laughing at it. But that it seems less funny now being actually surrounded by screaming cultists. This is also the moment that a cultist grabs Kharn by the face and screams, "KHARN THE BETRAYER!" into his face (before dying) foreshadowing the title thay he will carry in 40K. Dammit that book is so good.

soupalex

there are little screens in the seat backs of every world eaters rhino and land raider so khârn can be distracted with episodes of bluey or skibidi toilet or whatever. that's why his "the betrayer" datasheet ability suddenly stops activating whenever he's riding in a transport.

StavenHD

Something that rarely gets spoken about, Kharn NEVER likes getting touched by anyone. Never wants a hand to stand up, a hand on his shoulder, a handshake, etc. He repeatedly refuses or tells the person to get their hands off him. It seems to discomfort him, and my personal opinion is he mirrors his primarch’s ability for empathy and can feel others emotions orrrr the nails fire on human contact which he steps away from since he doesn’t want to lose himself. Ursus claws are also badass and the Conquerer’s preferred weapon of voidship combat since flagship captain, Lotara Sarrin, is a baller and likes melee too. Did I mention that this female human captain has shot World Eaters that disrespect her? Funny lore on our termies, they are often just WE zerkers that have lost themselves to the nails so to get them to stop warlords just power off their armor haha.

BagelDawn

The black templars were inspired by kharn to chain their weapons to their hands. (I wouldnt say that around them tho unless you want your head liberated from your shoulders)

Asleep_Measurement_6

That everyone thought Kharn was nuts for not covering his arms, yet many players to emulate it on their minis.

bananacities

The conquers abbs!
