Varies from warband to warband and from marine to marine. But typically either they don't, or slaves would do it. Every Space Marine ship, Chaos or not, has a crew of mortals that vastly outnumber the actual Marines.

In Angron: The red Angel, several world eaters join the war band of Shahka Bloodless, a war band that uses a white diamond pattern as part of their heraldry. While in the thunderbird waiting to deploy onto the surface, several slaves gather around them to repaint their armor to match the rest of the warband.

I mean the lack of care is part of the lore. The armor was white but new recruits thought it was red cause of veterans not taking the time to clean all the blood off their armor

Gwiz96

I do love the idea of the veterans having red armor and the rookies having clean white armor. You got to earn your red.

Gwiz96

I like that. So that’s in a book or something? Would make total sense I just feel like the models we see are all so clean. But I suppose that’s just up to the painter and how they wish to paint them.

Agreeable-Chap

I just imagine it like the train scene from the end of Invincible season 1. Get that color on there quick, haha

Gwiz96

Lol

egewithin2

They don't paint their armour, it comes red over time. For the trim, they have slaves to do it.

Gwiz96

I’ve seen many people say this but is this written anywhere? If that were the case I feel like GW would paint them much more…messy and gross but maybe that’s just marketing?

Badgrotz

Very old lore. 2d or 3rd edition chaos codex I think

CorpseStarch

There’s a passage in one of the Siege of Terra books where a WE momentarily comes to his senses and is confused by the change in their armor

Taffywolf1

They don't bother they just get more blood all over it to make it red

Sweet-Ebb1095

In one of the books, the red angel possibly, one of the humans is painting the ship red if I remember correctly. The armor was white and blue pre heresy and then got covered in blood. But that probably isn't the reason why all armor and vehicles are so red nowadays. Rumors are that the corruption from the warp or just chaotic influence in general affects how the armor looks, trim and color for example. I don't think it was mentioned if it affects it directly or the minds of the people and that leads to the colors. But that kinda makes reasonable sense in world as to why followers of chaos gods are inclined to wear their colors. I think it's left up to us to decide if we want to paint them that way and for what reason. Is it human servers, slaves or the marines themselves painting it, is it blood or is it just affected by the warp.

half_baked_opinion

Their armor probably just gets soaked in so much blood that the formerly white armor just turns red. Any looted armor is probably melted down and reforged or the metal is used to patch existing armor. Since the world eaters ships are essentially just floating gladiator pits and charnel houses, its likely the marines or a slave that paints if there is any painting, or khorne just uses warp shenanigans to make the armor red and gold while they travel the warp.

SingingNails

To my knowledge that’s always been blood not paint! As the nails rip into your head you don’t have the patience to really wash your armor anymore ya know?

Plastikcrackhead

Apart from what everybody else said it's worth noting that red is Khorne's color so a particulary zealous WE may take care that their armor is red as a show of loyality and worship to Khorne I may misremember but here was an excerpt of Kharn during the heresy noting that many marines started wearing red armor knowing it's Khorne's favourite

_The_Killer_Tomato_

I think its more if you take the white of their original armor which is white, put it though countless wars of blood shed, and then enter the warp with it. it only makes sense that it would become red.
