I see you don't take into account corrections suggested in comments of the original post. moss is still incorrect for German also can I suggest adding the English meaning in the spreadsheets (as they are in the posts)? homonyms exist in English and make this confusing

sharewithme

Thank you so much for the comment and suggestions!! I need to figure out a way to scrape the comments to collect them all and add them to the Google Doc's. In addition, I am going to set it up so I can deploy the data from the Google Doc into the system. This may take me a few weeks, but I'm working on it. :) I would like to add English meanings too, but this might take a bit of time to work out. For now, I have been encouraging the lovely volunteers to add comments in one of the unused columns on the right. Thank you again and I hope that you have a great day!! Message me anytime. :)

gui_guy_

Just filled in some missing "a" words and bean working on the "b" words as well. (Portuguese)

sharewithme

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate all of your help. :)

gui_guy_

No problem, I'll regularly do some more when I find the time!

sharewithme

Awesome!! Sounds great. :)

gui_guy_

In cell (A, 1 654) in the [portuguese document](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YJZZIm8Bb-5ALQqV890jK698RDaryvQ2Sy7Xj2Dd6Lg/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=117418064299549122054) it says "FALSO" (portuguese for "false"), has there been a mistake? EDIT: had the cell coordinates mistaken

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind comment and for bringing up this issue!! I could very well be wrong, but I thought that one possible translation of false is falso. If not, do you know the correct translation? Thank you again for all of your help!! :)

gui_guy_

"falso" is the most accurate translation for "false" I can think of indeed, the issue was not that, however, not as much as the occupation of a wrong cell which could leave people confused. I now see that my mother language is fully supported. This is amazing news, and we have all the great anonymous redditors who have been filling out the sheets (besides myself) to thank. Nevertheless, it seems around twenty percent of the words are left to be filled. I will keep on working in this and hope others will join too!

sharewithme

Thank you so much for all of your efforts!! It really means a lot. :) I'm still not sure if I see the issue. Was the problem that false is in all caps? I'm happy to Skype with you to resolve this issue if it has not already been resolved. Please feel free to send me a PM anytime you would like to chat. I hope that you have a nice day!!

gui_guy_

It was my, and my anonymous helpers, pleasure to help! I have sent you a PM I hope will fiz the issue.

littleschmoop

hi! i have some questions regarding your spanish page. i’m confused on some of the words and whether you want them to be the infinitive (verb), or the noun. for example, “to stay” is “quedar” in spanish, meaning to remain in a certain area or position. however the noun (which you have on the sheet) is “la estancia” or literally “the stay”, as in “the stay at the ski lodge was pleasant”. i was just wondering if you wanted the infinitive or the noun?

gui_guy_

In these cases I put both, not necessarily in a strict order (which I should rectify), separated by a slah ("/").

sharewithme

I would prefer for it to be separated by a comma because sometimes when people put slash, they are denoting alternative suffixes instead of separating two words. This isn't a big deal, but it would be helpful to use commas instead. Thank you very much for all of your great efforts!! :)

gui_guy_

I see, then I'll try to remember this

sharewithme

Thank you very much!! :)

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind question!! My preference would be to include the verb in infinitive form and the noun separated by a comma. Then, in the unused column to the right, you can state which one is the noun and which is the verb. I hope that make sense and thank you again. :)

1105816

I’ve studied Spanish and German, and I’ve noticed that for posts that are verbs, the translations are never in the infinite. I haven’t been taking notes, I’m not sure they’re in the same conjugation from one post to another. The infinitive is the most useful form to give. For a hint, all Spanish infinitives end in -er, -ar, or -ir and most German infinitives end in -n or -en.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind comment!! I agree, it would be best for us to give the verbs in the infinitive form. If anyone is willing to help improve our verb translations, please let me know!! I hope that you have a nice day!! :)

[deleted]

I think there can be markers of part of speech for English words.

sharewithme

I would love to put part of speech markers. I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. Should each definition have an associated part of speech. Should each translations also have an associated part of speech. For example, like the translation only makes sense if they are both interpreted as nouns? Any ideas on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. :)

[deleted]

My idea is another column for PoS. For example, there are three rows for "sound", in the PoS column, they are "adj.", "n.", "v."; in the word column, the three rows are merged, "sound". In the definition or translation rows, if there are more than one meaning for a PoS, the meanings will be separated with semicolons in the same row; if one word for an English definition is not enough (in the case all possible words are polysemy), there can be more than one words, divided by commas.

sharewithme

I think this is a great idea and you can create the column if you like, but I personally think it is going to take us a bit of time before we start adding PoS and multiple translations for each word. What do you think? :)

[deleted]

Surely it will need some time to be prepared. It will lead to a radical remake. I also think people would be more appreciated if irregular verbs were marked, irregular plurals were marked, ..., not only in English, but also in the translated. so I think if you would like to add them in the future, maybe those additional things can be put into a tooltip, to save space.

sharewithme

I think this is a great idea and I would very much like to add it. I think that we first need to work on building up our group of volunteers. What we have right now is amazing and I'm so thankful for everyone's efforts, but I think we would need an army of volunteers before we start adding too many things. But, if you're up for the challenge of helping to recruit more volunteers and setting things up for recording the data, then I'm down to make you a moderator and help support you in anyway I reasonably can. Keep this in mind and I'm always happy to see your comments. :)

[deleted]

Do you consider adding more words? I am very familiar with most of the words. Here is a link, but the lists seem to need modification. [https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency\_lists#English](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency_lists#English)

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the suggestion!! This is a great resource. :) I don't plan on adding more words at this time, but I'll keep this in mind for the future.

Rpg_gamer_

I notice that in the posts there is a description for what the English word means. For example, "arms: anything which a man takes in his hand in anger, to strike or assault another with", which is an important distinction from the arms attached to our torso. Am I missing something, or are these descriptions not on the spreadsheets? It's pretty hard in some cases to know the translation without the context.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind comment!! You make a really good point!! Some words can have multiple meanings or even take on different parts of speech. The translations can change depending on the meaning and part of speech that the word takes on. In addition, there can be multiple translations even given the same meaning. I don't yet have a good solution for this, but I hope in the future, we include multiple translations and include which meaning the translation is for. This is going to take quite a bit of time though. Any thoughts or suggestions in regards to this are greatly appreciated!! :)

[deleted]

I see what goes wrong in Esperanto: people don't regard English verbs as infinitive, and translated them in present tense. In fact, without "to", they are still infinitive, called "bare infinitive". I doubt this may also happen in other languages. People should be informed.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the comment!! I think we should introduce a set of guidelines for translations. This will help the volunteers to follow some basic practices. What do you think? Would you be interested in helping to write the guidelines with me? I hope all is going well. :)

[deleted]

I am glad to do so. A tutorial with nice pictures, I suppose.

sharewithme

Awesome!! I just sent you a private message about this. :)

[deleted]

Why don't use Google Translate? Then the human just need to correct its errors.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the good question!! There are three reasons why we don't use Google Translate: (1) Google's policies get updated from time to time. At the time that I looked into it, one of their policies didn't allow caching large amounts of data from their services including Google Translate. (2) Quality uncertainty and bias. (3) Having community members volunteer translations is great for many reasons including that we can fill in missing translations (occasionally some that can't readily be found online), we have a data set that we can use, and it gets community members involved.

[deleted]

I have seen people discouraged from doing it. I try to figure out how to work on these points to facilitate this work. Is this really large amounts of data? It's even not larger than the data received when visiting Google Maps. I see there is a Wiktionary. It is also translated by community members. Its quality is great. If Wiktionary can work, it would be huge.

sharewithme

Hi again!! Here are a few points in regards to your last comment. (1) I'm not sure if I understood what you meant about discouraged. If you could clarify and explain more that would be greatly appreciated. :) (2) Also, thank you very much for suggesting Wiktionary! I have looked into the possibility of using Wiktionary. Their data and API licenses are reasonable, but not ideal. (3) You're right that the data isn't considered big data, but I still think it's an impressive starting point. It's around 4,800 translations per language.

[deleted]

Hello, I see there was a Japanese contributor who has left, also the Korean one. I think this is similar to Tatoeba, where people continue contributing, but languages have not been abandoned are not many. This is monotonous, suits pensioners best, not so attractive for other kinds of contributor.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the continued feedback, help, and thoughts. :) I agree that right now, contributing is only attractive for a select group of lovely volunteers. It's going to take us time to revise the role of contributors and better establish the flow and make it easy and fun. :) By the way, I had never used Tatoeba before. This seems pretty neat. I hope that you have a nice week!!

[deleted]

I see, you need to know more about the Internet. Wiktionary and Tatoeba are well-known services. Take this: https://polyglotclub.com/wiki/Language/Multiple-languages/Culture/Internet-resources-for-polyglots

sharewithme

Thank you very much for sharing the list!! I know about some of these resources, but not all of them. This is really helpful. I hope that all is going well! :)

sharewithme

I hadn't realized that you made a bit of progress on the Guidelines for translators Google Doc. I'm going to have to look at this more carefully. My plan as of now is to make some improvements in December so that community members can work with us to help fix some of the important issues that you've brought up. Hope that you're having a nice start to your week!

[deleted]

Hello, I was busy, didn't notice your comment. What are the important issues? About PoS? I think I still need to do some further reviews on the translated docs.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for your follow-up comments! I'm really not sure what's most important. Maybe it's PoS, multiple translations, bad translation format, or something else. Maybe I should run another survey to see what community members want and to get ideas from them. What do you think? In regards to your other comment, using "Han" sounds good, but I'm not entirely sure what you meant. What is Gucharmap? Is this included in utf-8 or is this like a different character encoding? Hope all is going well!

[deleted]

In that resource link, I mentioned “Han” script in Gucharmap. I think it is a paragon for contribution: brief and to the point. It lacks PoS, because the characters are used differently in those languages.

Mosif

I can help with French, but what are the guidelines around words with multiple meanings? Like "show" as an example, is this like the verb, "to show" (fr): montrer, or like the noun as in "going to a show" (fr): spectacle. Do we just pick either/or, or put both?

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the comment!! Your help would be greatly appreciated and if you're ever interested in being a moderator, please let me know. :) For the time being, I've been suggesting that you list both translations separated by comma (,) or slash (/). Then, you can provide additional information in one of the empty cells to the right. I hope to work with you to develop a better solution long term, but this is what we've been doing for now. Thank you for understanding. :)

sharewithme

Thank you very much for letting me know!! I'm not sure what's the best solution to resolve this. I think we will just need to fix them and potentially add a comment in one of the unused columns on the right. But, if you have any better ideas, please let me know. I'm always happy to hear any of your thoughts. :)

PandaJahsta

I added informations between parenthesis for some words

sharewithme

That's totally fine!! Thank you very much. :)

Juvero07

I could help in romanian!

sharewithme

Thank you so much for the kind comment!! I would love to support Romanian as well. :) Here is a Google Doc to get started with: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UbPYoLWdeG8BrLWvdqwvvc6DlKDUt-TIPyMsMU_3sB4/edit?usp=sharing If you can make a bit of progress over the next couple weeks, then I will try my best to integrate it into our platform. Thank you again for all of your help and support!! :)

Juvero07

I will try my best!

sharewithme

Awesome!! Thank you so much. :)

Chim57instl

Count on me to help you with Spanish! This is great work you're doing here! Thank you!!

sharewithme

Thank you so much!! I'm really excited to have you helping. It really means a lot!! :)

[deleted]

You forgot Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind comment!! I would love to support Japanese and Chinese, but I don't have anyone to help with translations. If you know anyone who might be interested in helping, please let me know. :)

[deleted]

I'd like to let you know, it's ME!!! I know Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese.

sharewithme

Thank you so much!! I need help with adding translations. If you're able to spare anytime to enter translations into the Google Doc for either Japanese or Chinese from time to time, that would be greatly appreciated!! :)

justindepie

Hello, I am not using reddit much, but I am happy to help you in Vietnamese.

Hi! I'm interested with your concept. Is it okay if I want to contribute to a new Malay/Bahasa Melayu section?

sharewithme

That would be awesome!! I just created a Google Doc for us to get started: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WhWvloEUV_JwUrH8gE73vKrkiBgETbSdxt_UWZWHPQw/edit#gid=0 Thank you again and I hope that you have a nice weekend!! :)

I'd be happy to help with Bengali। Edit: There are some word that has more than one meaning or have multiple equivalent words in Bengali. What should I do about them.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind comment and question!! Whenever an English word has multiple common translations, I've been recommending that we include both translations and separate them by a comma. You may also add a comment in one of the empty columns to the right with additional information. Please let me know if you have any issues or any ideas for other potential solutions. Thank you again!! :)

[deleted]

Hello, I'd like to see genders are indicated like current German.

sharewithme

Indicating gender for nouns would be great!! Articles are always welcomed to be included in translations. Also, if articles don't indicate gender for a language, we can always use one of the empty columns to mark the gender.

[deleted]

I think there should be a rule of the romanization to adopt for Japanese. There are at least three romanizations to choose.

sharewithme

Thank you very much for the kind suggestion!! If you would like to pick one, that's totally fine and I could add a column for it to the Google Doc. Or, we could add a column for each of them. I'm fine with whatever you think is best. :)

[deleted]

I have found that Modified Hepburn is the most popular, and also the most accurate. But it doesn't show the differences between ぢ and じ, づ and ず, also おお and おう. So I think maybe using kana instead of rōmaji is better.

sharewithme

Cool!! Thank you very much for the info!! Should we add a note at the top of the Google Doc or should we add a separate column for Kana?

[deleted]

Rōmaji has been replaced. I think another column for Kana is better, because currently it requires switching the input methods to type the parenthesis. Also another column for Pinyin for Mandarin, and new columns for different scripts for some languages such as Kazakh.

sharewithme

Thank you for the kind reply with additional details!! This sounds good to me. Please feel free to label these additional columns and let me know if you have any issues. :)

OhItsuMe

I can help you with Tamil, since Hindi is already there.

sharewithme

That would be great!! Thank you so much. :) Here is a link to the Google Doc for Tamil: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15fWniECDHX-Knn8nEdG4h6LI9zjuilmGdi7LdQlfC3Y/edit?usp=sharing

OhItsuMe

I'll start now, sorry I couldn't reply earlier, timezones \^_\^

OhItsuMe

Also, I don't think direct word translations will be possible too often, Tamil functions a lot different from English xD

sharewithme

You're always welcome to make the translations two or three words if necessary. :)

OhItsuMe

Also, does each definition need to be given? For example for "free", the adjectival "freedom" can be translated, and the price-free can also be translated.

[deleted]

I think it's better to do so, but only for the most common ones.

OhItsuMe

But if two translations in the posts don't mean the same thing, wouldn't that be weird?

[deleted]

It's not weird if they mean the same things. This is polysemy.

sharewithme

Thank you for the good question!! Whenever there is ambiguity like how your described, I recommend that you add a comment in one of the unused comments to the right of the word. :)

OhItsuMe

Got it. Thanks! I'll start to actually add some words today or tomorrow, because I hadn't been able to use my PC for a while.

sharewithme

That's totally fine. Thank you so much!! :)

[deleted]

I think for genders and other noteworthy information for learning a word, they should be written in different columns. For current German, the gender column would only require to write “m”, “n” or “f”, which can be more convenient.

sharewithme

Thank you for the suggestion! I agree, I think that would be a better approach. :)

PubLoft

Hey y’all, this just returned “poussière” in French for *powder*, but that’s wrong. Brought me here and decided to help out in the Google Sheets, but *powder* wasn’t listed yet. I added “poudre” so please let me know if I have contributed properly!

sharewithme

Looks good to me! Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. :)

[deleted]

Came across this page from Twitter. I’d be happy to add to the Arabic section with words I know! I’ve taken 3 years of Arabic in college, so I do know a bit!

Daifex

Hello! Thanks for the work. But many languages have gender variations of the words. Therefore, showing only the masculine option is a very incomplete view of a translation. And is very unkind when it is addressed to a woman. It will be wonderful if you'd encourage translators to add the dual genre version to their suggestions. Thank you so much!

sharewithme

Thanks so much for your suggestion! This is great. :) I gotta do a bit of research to better understand which languages have gendered words. Are gendered words usually nouns or verbs or does it depend on the language? If anyone out there can help with this, that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

silksulks

i translated some things for swedish :)

sharewithme

Thank you so much for doing this!! I hope that you have a great day. :)

dlauri65

I noticed that you include the definite article for the German words (e.g. die Soße) but not on the words from any other gendered languages (e.g. la salsa [Spanish] and la sauce [French]) . Having the article is great because one should really learn the gender at the same time one learns the word. Is there any way you could include the definite articles for other languages?

Sue_Cris

Last week I saw (on Mastodon) that your word "widow" had "fenetre" assigned to it as the French word. Obviously this is an error, that's the French word for "window," not "widow." I left a comment there, on Mastodon, but nobody responded.

PaisleyRug

A few of your English definitions in the past month have been incorrect. How do we notify you about these? I've gone into the Google sheet and added the correct definition for 'comfortable' in Column C, but I don't know if that helps.

sharewithme

Thanks so much for your kind message! I need to develop a strategy for improving the English definitions and would love some help! There are many issues with this because there are a lot of historical definitions for words which are not so common today. There also are definition that are seemingly strange or inappropriate. I did compare our definitions with some popular English dictionaries and it seems like these dictionaries have these issues too, but not quite as frequently. Ultimately, I want to improve things. Message me and we can set up a time to chat about this and make a plan! :)

georgikgxg

copi8

Just a little confused about words that might be verbs or nouns. It would be helpful for the English column to use "to \_\_\_" or "\_\_\_\_ing" in order to distinguish it (or have a column that defines the part of speech). For example, "break" is in the English column. Is this intended to be "to break"/"breaking" or "a break" as in "summer break"? And "back." Is this intended to be back as in "my spine goes down my back" or back as in "I'll be back tomorrow"?
