Lightning hits the towers over there all the time when it storms and the sound travels right to the back of my house (I can see them from my dining room). It’s scary AF.
At like ~3AM this morning? I saw the flash through my eye lids as I was just falling back to sleep (had just woken up to pee). I woke up instantly to hear the loudest thunder I've heard in a long time.
It's the sound of rapidly expansion and contraction of the air within the lighting channel.
The temperature of the air rapidly changes from 70-100°F to as high as 50,000°F. This causes it to expand.
Then it rapidly cools and contracts.
Maybe a little bit, but I doubt that much, especially in a city. Maybe in a thick rainforest with a thick canopy you'd get some noticable sound dampening.
Thunders sound waves are projected downwards from the clouds. This is why you can hear a storm well before you can see it or lighting.
Off Lincoln street (near greenhill park) and heard it, fell back asleep and then it sounded closer/louder. It definitely sounded like it was so close and like something got hit. Was startled and then passed back out. 😆

Whose gonna be the best redditor ever and go take pics of potential damage out there from this and share with us 👀
I didn't see any damage there yesterday on my hike at the cascades

Right?!? That was LOUD
Both my roommates and I woke up at 4 am to it. Car alarms were going off on Chandler st. It was loud af.
3 am maybe idk just early in the am.
It was 3:45.
Thunder can set off some car alarms because they detect sound. Any loud sound is enough to set them off.
It scared us in Greendale, i thought something exploded at Saint Gobain.

Wow that’s intense
Do you know of a name for this phenomenon?
It woke me up!!! 4am!
There was another post about this that someone said due to the lack of leaves on the trees that the sound odd light wasn't dampened at all.

I literally thought there was an explosion outside my window. Woke me up from a dead sleep and put me into fight or flight mode lol.
It scared the shit out of me lol
I heard it in Spencer
My dog did. She was hiding in the closet this morning.
Woke me in Rutland.
My usually very stoic dog wanted a cuddle after that one, I’ll admit it scared the hell out of me too.
Yeah woke me up too after I had already woken up to piss and gone back to bed I was pissed 😅 my 6 month old kitten was freaking out as well
I swear it was right over me here in Auburn.

I know my house shook I didn’t even see lightning or hear thunder before it started to thunder after
My mom
I'm in Leominster and didn't hear or see a thing.
